How to Install a HP Laserjet 1012 in Windows 7 (& Windows 8) and Fix PCL Problem Pt. 1

UPDATE 1/26/13: I have tested this procedure on a Windows 8 desktop and the above steps work. If you have a Windows 8 desktop and want to install your 1012 onto your computer, these steps will work.
If you have problems trying to install an HP Laserjet 1012 on your Windows 7 OS computer and/or have "Unsupported Personality: PCL" hassles, watch this video to solve both problems.

I recently reinstalled my Windows 7 and dreaded having to look for the solution again. I found your RUclips video. Took me 2 minutes to view your video and less than that to install my printer. So much easier!
I am so grateful for this video and these instructions. I have had this Win 7 computer for about three years and have tried so many ways to get the HP1012 to print - to no avail until today. I have had to send documents to a printer on another floor and go to retrieve documents. I finally moved my computer to a makeshift desk on that floor. I had tired many other ways to make my workhorse 1012 work and none of them worked. I had figured out how to get it to work with windows 7 a few years back. So, when all else failed, I watched your video, did what you said and my printer works! now I am returning the one I bought and getting my money back. For my windows 8: I followed up all the steps up to 2:26 and found that after you update drivers, HP> HP1015 has been added to the list of available drivers. :D Thanks for the solid set of instructions and glad windows finally listened
Thank YOU!!! My system crashed because of local storms and after restart and recovery my HP Laserjet 1012 was 'offline'. This was the day of my 30th Wedding Anniversary special dinner and my wife said this will not spoil our day. I had been working for several hours when I finally found your solution!!! I followed almost all of your steps (using Win 8.1) and selected HP Laserjet 1015. That worked for me and my old trusty Laserjet 1012 printer.

I didn't have the LaserJet 3055 PCLS Microsoft in my list of available drivers (like you had in your video), so I downloaded it. Followed the rest of your steps. Got my HP 1012 to work!!! Hooray. Thank you.

technotard13 you are my hero!!! i have had the 1012 printer for 7+ years, it is a workhorse and i love it, and i was soo upset that upgrading my work laptop to Windows 7 was going to render it useless. many props to you.
I installed Windows 10 and lost my printer driver, so I repeated these steps to install the driver for my trusty old HP Laserjet 1012 and it worked like a charm! Thanks for this video, I have now used it several times and told someone else about it as well.

This is the best solution I have found to this problem, and seems to work across Windows 7, 32 and 64, and from others Windows 8. I used the 1015 driver.
The unsupported personality issue is more complicated since it is an attribute of HP being cheap in the design of this printer and putting a lot of of the support in software with a non standard PCL. This causes printer buffers to overflow, so the only way to recover is to power cycle the printer, which clears buffers until the next overflow.
I got one of these from my friend who said he didn't want it anymore, and with a full cartridge of toner I couldn't just get rid of it or store it away. Thanks to your video it now works fine with my system.

Thanks for taking the time to figure this out; worked great. Before I could DELETE all the files in the Print Spooler, I had to stop the Spool process in Task Manager, since it was using the files.

Thanks for the tutorial. I followed it exactly and got the "unsupported personality" error message. I tried removing all files from the .....spool/printers folder that you mentioned, and also tried manually powering off and on the printer ( that someone else mentioned on a similar tutorial) and still the same error message, so next I went back into devices and printers and removed the HP 3055 printer and replaced it with the HP Laserjet 1015 and that worked! Again, thank you.

The HP1012 is the only HP product I've ever really liked. It's also the cheapest HP product I've ever purchased. I'm psyched to have discovered this video and I can't wait to try this out (especially because I have an unused cartridge I thought I'd never use!)

I followed his instructions precisely and it worked. Installed a 1012 to a Windows 7 HP desktop that I purchased several years ago and redeployed to a new location near the 1012 printer. I was probably lucky in that file we need to delete from windows explorer toward the end of the video was blank and I was able to ignore those aspects of his instructions.

Two days ago Windows 10 was installed and the world changed.
Once again my printer is not recognized. Before spending any more frustrating time I am checking to see if this fix will work the same for 10.

Brilliant. Windows 8.1. I used to use a different (makeshift) driver, and the printer worked, but it was VERY slow. This seems to work at the regular speed! Thanks! P.S. Like others here, I love my little Laserjet 1012. It's a great printer.
Works great thank you very much, had to update to Quickbooks 2015 so I installed on my laptop as our work computers use a DOS based system and we use Windows XP.

THANK YOU! I am on Windows 8, and I can confirm these exact steps worked. You are awesome.
2 Important things to keep in mind:
1) IF YOU DO NOT HAVE DOT 4: HP has DOT 4 drivers (but not the printer driver) on their website. This should allow you to choose Dot 4_001 in the list.
2) YOU MUST use Windows Update to update the list of printers in order to have "HP LaserJet 3055 PCL5 (Microsoft)" as seen in the video (it's 5, not S). DO NOT USE ANOTHER. This exact one is the one that worked for me.

Thanks so much for the information on installing HP 1012 with Windows 10. I can keep on using my favorite little printer! Have had it since 2003 and it is still going strong. This works! Computer kept saying "connect to a 2.USB port" which it was but still wouldn't recognize printer. Thanks again!
