    We need to get this blade heat treated and then lots of grinding to make the Serenity Dagger FLAT! Once we are done with all of that we can move on to making the blood groove, also known as a fuller. We had a lot of fun making this vid with a lot of funny moments.

      I asked a question farther down but thought I’d drop
      It here too. I’m really curious. Does the steel experience the leidenfrost effect when you quench it? Is that why you move it up and down?

    Kyle, your attention to detail blows me away, it's so satisfying. I do all of my crafting in wood, not metal, but the idea is the same: all those little things add up.
    A true craftsman like yourself is not afraid to "give away his secrets" because the challenge is actually putting those secrets. Your videos are educational as well as mesmerizing, I fear I won't be able to stop.

    Here's a tip to get a cleaner cut when using a ball nose end mill. Tilt the head about 10-15° and the cutting radius scoops out the center of the groove instead of having the center of the ball nose where the SFPM is essentially zero. Of course you'll need to tram the head back to vertical, but it's no big deal with the proper indicator setup.

    • @lunkydog
      @lunkydog Год назад +4

      As long as the depth of cut is less than the radius of the end mill, both starts and stops of the fuller will appear the same.
      Just try it side buy side on a piece of aluminum and you'll see the difference. Straight up Vs leaned over.

    When Kyle says "very close" he is working on an entirely different scale than me. When he says it he means "undetectable by the naked eye".
    Edit:
    "Knifemaker's confetti is known to cause cancer or even death to the state of California". Unintended consequence of that law is that now the warning is so ubiquitous that it is entirely ignored.

    Looks like you clamped parralels to your machine table and most likely alligned with a dial gauge. If precicion machines did not change significantly than the T-slots should be parallel to your machine bed (at least it was 47 years ago when I did my apprenticeship as a tool and die maker). It is clearly visible that the inside „walls“ of the slots are ground. You should get a set of blocks that exactly/snuggly fit the with of the slots. That plus a set of narrow (maybe 10 mm) parallels will get your blade perfectly aligned to you machine bed without measuring and fiddling around. The small flat sport just need to be snug to those parallels, a couple of light taps with a copper bar will do this.
    Can‘t wait to see the next video.

    Long, pokey daggers are the best kind of daggers. The kind that can be used as a short sword if necessary. This should turn out to be a very beautiful dagger, though you'll have to be quite careful with your temper and how you grind in the bevels leading to the point to avoid it immediately snapping off when you test it. It'll have to be one of those daggers that isn't actually as thin as it looks.
