WWII, the '90s, and Russian Annexation (again) | Crimea's Forgotten History

  • Following an eight-month offensive by Axis forces, Crimea fell in 1942, but this proved short lived, with Soviet forces retaking the peninsula during their push into Eastern Europe. After WWII, Crimea and its neighbor to the north, Ukraine, suffered at the hands of Joseph Stalin, who, in former’s case, organized a brutal campaign of ethnic cleansing (i.e. detatarization) that dramatically altered the peninsula’s demographics. The dissolution of the Soviet Union brought still more change, with Crimea - now designated as an autonomous republic - being attached to an independent Ukraine. However, this did not sit well with some and agitation from the likes of Yuri Meshkov, among others, saw a push for independence and/or reunification with Russia. Tensions ran high throughout the ‘90s and, following the events of the Revolution of Dignity (aka the Maidan Revolution) in 2014, Russian military intervention saw Crimea (and the city of Sevastopol) later annexed by Moscow. This event, in more ways than one, marked the beginning of the still ongoing Russo-Ukrainian War.

I love historical content, but when you guys blend it with current geopolitics and other stuff, it's really just so much more interesting to me personally!

Oh, thanks John; yeah, with more recent ghost countries (even some older ones) we can work in a geopolitical bent and we have plans for more content like these past couple of videos later this year!

    Wow
Really puts current events in context. I lived through these events, yet understood so little! America does not receive enough significant international news. Kind of odd

Another fantastic well explained video. It amazes me that the education system doesn’t teach history like this but rather a one sided point of view. This Russian history videos are rlly great.

Thanks man 😄; yeah, classes in college or university might go into further detail on certain subjects and/or give different perspectives, but generally speaking, I agree: history deserves more attention.

Also, our next video, while not focusing exclusively on Russia per se, does play a pretty big role in Russian history!

Yanukovich and his party "Partiya Rehioniv" had a pro-EU and pro-russia rethoric (also calling it as neutral status) during presidential and local elections in 2010, so it's wrong to say that these elections' results show us how pro-EU or pro-russia Ukrainians were.
