- 2020 breathed new life into a succession movement in eastern Ghana, seeking to create an independent Western Togoland. And, while the rebellion is modern, the root cause dates back to at least the 1950s, if not Germany’s entrance into the Scramble for Africa in the latter 19th century.

Hey, for our small (but growing) audience, English and German CCs are now up!
We always try getting these up in a timely manner - especially for our international listeners. Hope you guys enjoyed the video - share and subscribe.
It's crazy how much you do for your small audience, can't wait for it to grow, most people would just give up with a small audience, yet you just try harder
@@blade9194 Thank you so much; and yeah, we're small, but growing! Glad to have you as part of our community and definitely let us know what you think of future videos.
@@GhostCountries Well so far it's as high quality as any major channel 😅. I actually found the channel through a comment about interesting unrecognized countries while researching Rhodesia, they said about Green Ukraine and I found your channel!
Also, if/when you run out of countries like this, what will you do next?
@@blade9194 I have no idea if we'll ever run out - there's just so many the further back in history you go - but we'll probably explore other things like flags, people, important battles, and stuff like that on the channel too!
This channel is underrated!
Thank you; we're slowly making our way up in the ranks! 😅
@@GhostCountries hope you'll reach 1000 subs soon :)
@@ahkeemeturk7187 I was about to say the same thing
Thank you so much to letting me know more about the story of my beloved country Togo 🇹🇬
It’s actually more Ghana than Togo😅
As good as always!Keep going! Always can learn a lot from you👍
Thanks Jiayi; really glad to hear that!
Very interesting channel! kudos!
Thank you for the video!!!
Wow I Love this video, too much effort on it.
I have been in Ghana in February and March 2020, in the South (volta region) but nobody talks about togoland, maybe because I have stayed in a small village.
Said that, continue in this way, you are making a really good job with this kind of videos.
Love from Spain ❤
Thank so much for this Juan 😆 - always nice hearing someone appreciates the work we put into a video + it's good for the algorithm! Really interesting to hear that you were in Ghana and of all places the Volta Region; a bit off topic here, but we'll actually be covering another Ghost Country (Ambazonia) somewhat similar to Western Togoland in the near future!
Damn the effort you put only for a few views is unreal I definitely subscribed and liked good job!!!
Hey, thanks ManBeanHu + welcome aboard; it definitely is a lot of work 😅 - not going to lie - but we are growing and it's awesome getting positive comments from people like yourself!
really enjoyed it. Very educational.
Glad you enjoyed it; we've got plenty more content planned, including some other videos dealing with Africa (i.e. Ambazonia, Cabinda, etc.)!
Good video bro
Are there plans for other episodes in Africa? Really cool, I never heard of this conflict before!
Oh, definitely; we have an episode set in Africa coming out next week and plenty of others planned!
Thanks so much for sharing this history and current events. My hometown is in that Area, we remain ghana.
Oh, thank you Paulina; honestly, we love getting comments from people who actually live in a location we cover in-video! And yeah, to understand current events anywhere, more often than not, the area's history needs to be understood as well.
One more thing, the majority of people in Western Togoland speak French.
Thanks for the info 😉; oh, and speaking of languages, we're actually thinking of doing an episode about the Anglophone Crisis / Ambazonia in the not too distant future!
@@GhostCountries Please mention Western Togoland when doing Ambazonia. Ambazonia isn't alone.
@@dankulafan6905 Oh, probably will do a bit of compare and contrast with Western Togoland in that episode / the podcast; it's definitely interesting how the language situation is basically reversed.
@@GhostCountries False.
@@fabriceizzo2922whats false
I’m gonna take a wild guess and say there’s significant oil deposits under them swamps around “togoland” and that’s a guiding “influence” into the recent separation and declaration of a new state. I have not studied the region, but am I anywhere near correct?
From what I understand, potential offshore oil reserves do exist in the Keta Basin and the Voltaian Basin, which covers nearly all of Western Togoland, may have other valuable resources (like gold) too; however, these have not been fully explored yet...but, yeah, I definitely think it's a motivating factor.
We actually just released a video about yet another African ghost country (Cabinda...sometimes called "the Kuwait of Africa"), where oil definitely plays a significant role!
@@GhostCountries thats a lie there are no resources there😂
@@GhostCountrieswow!!!!
I've addressed this before on my channel.
This is by far one of the most misrepresented "independence" movements. First of all, the idea that this is an ethnic conflict is false. Most Ewes living in the Volta do not support Western Togoland or any of these separatists. You got this correct: 13:24
In addition, one village declaring itself "free" should be taken as seriously as CHAZ in the USA's state of Oregon. This is correct like you said in the video 13:03
Countries always have their dispute portraying this as some sort of civil war and legitimate movement is unfounded.
Furthermore, there's this idea that ALL countries in Africa suffer from ethnic disputes due to how borders were set up by Europeans.
The "well these people can't live together because they're ethnically different!" is a strange one. Ghana is one of the most stable West African countries with little to no ethnic conflict. Most people speak English/Akan dialects that are largely understood by every group.
Furthermore, the Akan ethnic group and its meta-ethnicities are what make the country very consistent.
Hey man, thanks for commenting and I just watched your video; like you pointed out and I completely agree with you here, the situation in Western Togoland has definitely been oversimplified by foreign media.
Also, even though colonial borders can influence current events - something not just limited to Africa - I’d agree that too often is given as the end all be all for conflicts on the continent.
Oh, and regarding multinational (or ethnic) states in Africa, I think a good example contradicting the whole “if everyone is from group A things will be stable” is Somalia. Despite an estimated 85% of the population being Somali, the country has experienced instability and conflict since independence in 1960.
So, I agree with you there as well: it’s not a guarantee of political stability.
Biafra?
We definitely are planning to cover Biafra in a future episode!
ghana will have big problème because this
They should let Togoland be! Enough is enough
@shivArmattoe-2424 why?
