Byzantine Successor State? | The Despotate of Epirus (Part I)

- Following the Fourth Crusade and Sack of Constantinople in 1204, the Byzantine Empire collapsed. It’s vast territories spanning southeast Europe and the eastern Mediterranean were, thereafter, partitioned among a number of successor states, including the Latin Empire, Nicaea, Trebizond. A certain Michael Komnenos Angelos Doukas would, likewise, take advantage of the chaos, gaining control over a territory, in what is now Albania and Greece, later known as the Despotate of Epirus. He and his successors were able to successfully challenge surrounding regional powers - such as the Republic of Venice, the Second Bulgarian Empire, Serbia, and the previously mentioned Latin Empire - and later even briefly proclaimed themselves as Emperors. The Despotate, however, which for a period was also known as the Empire of Thessalonica, when seemingly on the verge of recapturing Constantinople and actually restoring the Byzantine Empire faced a crushing defeat at the Battle of Klokotnitsa. This marked a period of relative decline, but is not the end of our story.

This may have been the most intense and complicated episode for me to date! So much information packed into a 15 minute chapter…always amazes me how you can keep it interesting and even humorous at times. Well done.
Glad you enjoyed the video Tina! Yeah, there's quite a lot going on: a crusade, collapse of the Byzantine Empire, political maneuvering on the part of the Despotate's rulers, etc. And, there will be even more of that in Part II, but that's what make it an interesting! 😅
Also, it seems there may have been some technical issues with live chat - not entirely sure; if you had any problems though, let us know in the comment section.
Your Video is amazing, You definitely deserve more fans.
Thank you so much Joyce! 😀 We're nearing 1k; so, every new sub and especially shares help in this final stretch.
Damit, I was planning to watch the premiere, set the notification and all but then I forgot about it.
Cool video, as always!
Oh, no worries Artur. I'm sure we'll be doing more premieres (with less tech issues) and glad you liked the video! Actually, we've got quite a few videos planned and/or in works that are kind of similar to the Republic of Ezo - at least one dealing with Japan again; so, I'm pretty sure you'll like those as well!
Thanks again to everyone who joined us for the premiere! We actually mentioned quite a few ghost countries in this video and was just wondering if you'd like to see any of them covered in a video at some point as well?
*will probably set up a poll for that
Belarusian People Republic , and General Stanislaw Bulak-Balachowicz
The cave of Ioannina is very famous even today
And being home to the second most famous Oracle, the Oracle of the Dead, at the Gates of Hades is very interesting
I am fascinated by the Neolithic period findings of Mounds as burial sites here too. This seems common to The worldwide Neolithic period
Sounds like a great place to visit
That really is interesting and, without a doubt, would be a fascinating place to visit; we might try finding a way to explore the connections between mythology / legend and historical events at some point on the channel - we've got a lot more regular content planned too for 2022!
Yeah, definitely
And
Could not use the chat!😩
can't wait for the 2nd part! Great use of maps!
Glad to hear you liked the maps; we're going to try using them as a visual aid more often going forward, which definitely is work, but I think a visual aid like that really puts things in perspective sometimes!
Very interesting episode!🤯
Thanks Matt; really glad you liked the video!
I have to give this a like. Just for topic, I been looking for this info in video form...
It should also be noted that by taking Zara, the crusaders got themselves excommunicated for capturing a Christian city while on crusade.
Also, a minor point of clarification, Patriarch is actually still an active and separate title from "Cardinal" in the Catholic church. As an example, the Pope is actually the Patriarch of Rome and the head of the Maronite church (an Eastern church in communion with Rome, aka Eastern Catholic Church) is the Catholic Patriarch of Antioch while also being a Cardinal.
Aye 5,000 subs, congrats
Thanks man; we really appreciate it and we're definitely glad you came across the channel!
Wow really great maps!
Glad you think so Miltiades; we'll continue to improve our map game in future videos! Think they'll be pretty useful for some battles we plan to discuss in the (working title) Ghost Events miniseries.
Interesting topic✌
Thank you so much Jiayi; glad you liked it and we haven't forgotten about your video suggestions! Might be seeing a few later this year. 😉
very interesting video
Glad you liked it Micah; be sure to check out Part II when it comes out!
@@GhostCountries alright
great video
pls make one for trebizond
Thanks and we definitely will be covering Trebizond at some point!
@@GhostCountries btw also you didnt cover its full story , aka in late 13th-15th century
@@vagpaithe3570 Oh, we cover more of Despotate's story in Part II!
Thanks mate
Glad you liked the video!
I'm here because of the mod for attila mk 1212. Trying to learn the politics. Pretty cool!
Oh, that's awesome; Total War: Rome II kind of was the spark for us looking into the ancient state of Epirus and yeah, there was a lot more to the story than either of us thought!
nice information bro🎉
now part of despotate of epirus become Albania and another part become Greece
Yes, you are correct! We actually do have plans to eventually cover the Autonomous Republic of Northern Epirus, which basically would be the final chapter in this country's saga.
Really cool episode, but think chat may have bugged out or at least I did something wrong! lol
Glad you liked the episode John - we've done a lot more with Epirus than I previously thought we would 😅, but have plenty of other content in the works - and thanks for letting us know about live chat.
Good video, although the patriarch of Constantinople is like the pope, not like cardinals.
Thanks 😃 and yeah, when considering their authority, that’s a probably a better description.
Is the Principality of Arbanon also a successor state of the Byzantine Empire and I am interested in whether the Albanians had a role in despoate Epirus
True and the Principality of Arbanon's history is at least somewhat tied in with that of the Despotate because of Michael I Komnenos Doukas' invasion (c. 1216); honestly, I think looking into the Principality would make for a fantastic episode!
@@GhostCountries There were also Albanian noble families who served for the Byzantine Empire like the Arianiti and the muzaka family and there was an Albanian state of His despotate Arta founded by the spata clan
@@coc763 That's really interesting - just did a little bit of looking into the Arianiti and Muzaka families - especially when considering how intertwined their stories are with that of the Byzantine Empire.
@@coc763 Yes, the Albanians of that time, the Arvanites, how was calkex was like minority in the huge Greek Byzantine state. The problems with Arvanites start with Ottoman empire who they betray their Byzantine Greek brothers and fought in Turkish side. As Arvanon was region and not ethnic minority, the Greeks of Arvanon identified themselves as Greeks, the Slavic speakers as Serbians and the Muslims who influent by Ottomans called themselves as Shqipetar but Greeks continues to called people of Arvanon and Italians in the Latin version of Arvanon, as Albanians. After the creation of state of Albania, Slavic, Greek and Latin populations still remains in the area adopting the Albanian citizenship but always they want to be closer to Greece and Serbia. They it was 7 times the chance Albania to unite with Greece in a bigger federation who Italy adopt the refuse of Muslim Albanians who they create ultra nationalist movement. After communism the Greek ethnic Albanians was persecuted and after the fall of communism the hate with Serbia under Kosovo went to far. Today Albanian is ruled by Muslim jenisaries and every chance being closer to Greece forming a bigger force is just forgotten. Albania today throw in rubish the 2000+ years of Byzantine history to adopt the Ottoman identity.
None
Curious why you said Catholicism and orthodoxy are different religions? They both worship Jesus…so they’re both Christian…but yet you didn’t make the distinction between Sunni and Shia Islam when talking about the Muslims…?
Lots of errors. There was no Byzantine Empire. Just the Roman Republic - Empire. Also many Roman Emperors were Catholic Christians. Read the Edict of Thessalonica.
Another point the Venetians were actually also a successor State of the Roman Republic-Empire from the Exarchate of Ravenna.
The first statement is true, the other is not. There was no catholicism until 1054
Again read the edict @@the_kekromancer9779
