  • In this video I will talk about the Principality of Theodoro who is also known as Gothia, or the Principality of Mangup. This small, Christian feudal state located in the southwestern part of Crimea, existed from the 13th century to the 15th century. Its capital was Doros, also sometimes called Theodoro and now known as Mangup. The principality was a successor state of the Byzantine Empire, and was formed at the beginning of the 13th century from that part of the former Byzantine theme of Kherson in the Crimea, which had not become a colony of Genoa.
    Is good to know that the principality of Theodoros was the last Byzantine state to disappear, 22 years after the fall of Constantinople. The principality of Theodoro was an important part of the history of the Crimean Peninsula in the Middle Ages.

    That St.Stephen the Great married Maria Asanina Palaiologina, did it give him succession of the Roman Empire or the sons he had with Maria? Or doesn't it work like that?

    Good video. But i thought the despotate of epirus was the last byzantine state, because it fell in 1479

    • @HistoryClass
      @HistoryClass  4 года назад +39

      That's right, but it was ruled by latins, Tocco dynasty from Italy, while Mangup was ruled by byzantine greeks

      It was ruled by the Tocco dynasty of Italy since the mid 1300s. If you include Epirus, you might as well include Naxos (lasted until 1579) and Kythnos (succeeded Naxos and lasted until 1617)

      @@tripletgalaxy Severan dynasty was African, Heraclian dynasty was Armenian, Macedonian dynasty was mix of Armenian, Anatolians and Greeks, doesn't mean that Roman/Eastern Roman empires were African or Armenian. The islands were under suzerainty of Venice. Even though it was ruled by Italians, Despotate of Epirus was indeed last Byzantine rump state.

      Those fucking Turks couldn't keep their grubby little hands off anything Roman. Those fuckers took shit just to take it. No strategic value whatsoever. We have almost no East Roman successor states cause of those pieces of shit. The ones we do have "like the maniot pennsulia" are too inconclusive to draw any direct connection to. Like Goddamn you fucking Turks don't need EVERYTHING. Let a brother have SOME Roman Empire. Like not even a lot. Just enough scrappy bits to say it still exists, but nope
