  • Hello folks! In this episode, we are going to discuss possible reasons why Grove Street Families split up before the events of GTA San Andreas. Some various events played an enormous role in the storyline of the game. One of them is the famous Green Sabre which led to the downfall of one of the strongest gangs in Los Santos - Grove Street Families. Unfortunately, it turns out that it wasn't the only reason. What other factors were important in this thread? You'll find out in this video. 🙂

I think anyone who has knowledge with the LA crack epidemic of the 1990s will understand Sweet. Yeah, he's a dangerous criminal and not a guy that you would actually want to meet, but you get the impression that he cares for his community in his own way. Everything he does he does for his brothers. He's actually a lot like Don Vito Corleone in a way. He too didn't want drugs on his streets and that attitude ended up costing him.

I do understand where he's coming from, but the problem is that he does very little to ameliorate that and just decides to let it blow over. Plus he never takes full responsibility for his own mistakes since he's the gang's leader.

Sure thing! It's not like we are saying that being against drugs is a bad thing. Even Vito Corleone did the right thing as you mentioned. But as waters228 91 smartly noticed, the problem is doing nothing to grow influence, to find other ways to make money. Why Sweet couldn't be like Michael Corleone that said no to drugs but decided to invest in Moe Greene's casino.. This is the real issue 🙁

What you have to understand Sweet followed the rules of the Families from the early days in the late 60s early 70s. Once he took over in the 80s, shit started to change. The Ballas got stronger in the 80s once they started pushing weight. Sweet didn't have control, because once the hood split it started the set trippin in Los Santos. This is what happened in LA, with the Crips and some Bloods sets. Many Crips started killing each other in the 80s over drugs.

If you don't take out street dealers you will find your homies sitting in front of houses high af and you won't be able to recruit them
Aside from that your absolutely right, he did practically nothing for 'the good of the hood' instead CJ has to do his job while his older brother the supposed leader is almost constantly bitchin and complaining to CJ.

Sweet was unwilling to take any action to fix things. For five years he just let things fall apart, and then when CJ came back to town after their mom was killed, all he did was blame CJ. Did Sweet try to re-arm the gang’s arsenal after the police raid confiscated everything? No, that was CJ! He let CJ do all the grunt work in taking over territory. Sweet also disrespected Caesar despite the fact that it took Caesar to show CJ that Smoke and Ryder were traitors. Sweet led his soldiers into battle and got them killed.
After getting out of prison, he tries to start using drugs, after all that static he gave CJ about “forsaking his roots in the hood”. Then he tried to shut CJ out of helping lockdown the neighborhood during the riots. He shouldn’t be the leader in that gang.

Sweet let the crew fall apart by not having no backup plan, when it came to the drugs and he was just waiting for a miracle to happen. That's when CJ came in. Sweet gave CJ a hard time about running away and used his guilt into cleaning up the hood and fixing things on his behalf. All of this information makes me wonder... Why was it significant enough to have Big Smoke in the mission "Nines and AKs" say that one line while you're driving to Emmet's place?
"Seville wrongs Temple, Temple wrongs Grove. Bad blood leads to bad blood."
Taking that quote at face value could mean that there was beef between those 2 factions first and then that spilled over into Grove Street. Then Sweet, being like he always is and just waiting for everything to calm down instead of doing something about it first, doesn't solve any problems between them and just lets them break up into their own separate places.
During the mission, "Reuniting the Families," all 3 green gangs were supposed to have a truce between them so something good WAS supposed to happen for Grove Street. But then it got ruined with the SWAT raid.
I never knew that there was this much thought put into the plot, but I love how detailed the story is in this game.

You guys have to understand, when Grove Street Families started back in the late 60s they were the strongest gang. When I say strongest they had Ganton, Idlewood, Willowfield, Playa De Seville, and Temple. The Ballas only had Jefferson and Glen Park. Whoever started the Families in the beginning had control, until Sweet took over in the 80s. Ballas got stronger during the 80s with crack epidemic. They were the only ones pushing weight. They took over East Los from the LSV gang. Ballas also took over the projects in Idlewood and Willowfield. This weakend the Grove Street Families completely. If you look in certain missions you can tell the Families use to run certain cities in the past. The way Sweet explains how the Grove ain't big like they once we're. When you take Idlewood from the Ballas he says Idlewood is back ours. Plus Emmit is from Seville Blvd but he hangs out in Willowfield, that should be a hint Seville use to control Willowfield as well. Just like in real life Los Angeles many smaller gangs got powerful in the 80s because they started pushing weight. Many Ballas started taking over former Families turf. Either former GSF members died, turned in crack heads, or flipped to Ballas because of the income. If Sweet was the founder of the Grove Street Families he would of been a way older dude than what Sweet looks in the game. CJ is barely in his 20s. Sweet has to be in his early 30s. Like I said why you think they never mention that Sweet is the founder of the Families. There has to be a founder, either he died in the streets and Sweet took over. Just like Sweet states there not big like before, because who ever started the gang had power until Sweet took over in the late 80s. You have to understand what I say. Funny enough, we managed to check some sources and on the official website of GTA SA (status unavailable, but here's how it looked like -> classicgtasites.com/sanandreas/), it is said that the Ballas were in Los Santos since the 1970s, so this confirms your information. However, when it comes to Grove Street Families, there's no information about this gang. Frankly speaking, we are not disagreeing with you that GSF used to be bigger or something. The thing is we don't have anything stating that this part of town belonged to them throughout the last 5 years. You are mentioning taking territories in missions, but remember that we are talking about the breakdown that happened from 1987-1992. We are not talking about what happened before 1987 in this video. And yes, we know that Emmet is working in Willowfield, but does it mean SVF used to have this territory in 1987-1992? Not necessarily. That's why we mentioned only the obvious areas. And finally, this whole story is based on real events, but again, we don't know since when Sweet is the leader of GSF, there's no mention of that in the game or other game sources.

@@gaminginvestigators Are you saying it's impossible for these gangs to be based on the Bloods and Crips because of plagiarism??? Because when it comes to gang banging there is no actual legit form of plagiarism. People use their flags, colors, slang, symbols, graffiti and hand signs in movies, music videos, social media, music etc. Gang culture has become a big part of media and pop culture and it's history is not necessarily something you can go down and get copyrighted. So no, it's not impossible and the person you responded to made very valid points in terms of how that inspiration most likely manifested. The repercussions aren't through some large court case or settlement when it comes to plagiarism or false claiming. They are in the streets. If you aren't respected, connected or actually bang and then you use their set, your going to have REAL problems on your hands when you actually are checked about it. But a large video game like this ?? I highly doubt the bloods and crips filed a motion to stop them from using their history as inspiration. This is a game about LA banging. There's no way that they didn't take any inspiration from the sets and gang culture that was created and exists here because they were afraid of plagiarizing. Movies like South Central and Boyz in tha hood definitely took inspiration from LA gang culture and that was allowed to happen so i'm confused on this take.

The Families were originally extremely strong before all the sets split and Ballas gained influence and overtook them as the cities biggest gang. They even also owned Willowfield, Lower East Los Santos, Idlewood, etc... One cool little hidden detail is you can still find various Families tags in the Ballas hoods that once belonged to the Families as well as details in conversation of the history of the area pre-1992.
Originally, there were only 2 Ballas sets: The Rollin' Heights in Jefferson and the Kilo Tray in Glen Park. The Front Yard were formed in Idlewood once the drug trade began to rise and they quickly became the largest set taking over Grove Streets territories around Ganton. The Temple Drive Ballas came to fruition as a subdivision in Verona Beach and Vinewood to surround and start moving in on the Temple Drive Families turf. The Kilo Tray Ballas even setup a secondary base of operations in the Seville Boulevard Families former turf down in Willowfield and Ocean Docks. They pretty much had the entire gangland on lock by the time CJ returned smh

    • @gaminginvestigators
      @gaminginvestigators  Год назад +1

Well yeah, the greens' gang was one of the biggest in Los Santos during their great times. However, at some point, they were losing more and more influence. As for the Ballas sets, we don't know too much about their origins. There's even not much information on the official website... So we can't say which Balla set was the first or second :/ We do see your approach there, but it's more of an assumption rather than a fact. We do agree with your thinking in terms of how other Balla sets were found, but we can't agree that there were 2 sets originally because there are no arguments for that, unless you could find something in the game. Thanks for sharing your reflections!

    • @jflexys5114

@@gaminginvestigators I got the info as a combination from the wiki, paying close attention the the games lore in conversation, GTA RP, and exploring and coming up with my own conclusions, etc... So partly facts and assumptions mostly. I do know though that Idlewood, Willowfield, and Lower East Los Santos were originally Families territory though pre 1992. Also is you look at the shades of gang territory on the map, you can also see how dark each shade of the gangs color in each neighborhood on the map which represents their influence. The Ballas were the strongest in Jefferson and Glen Park plus there's no history or traces of the Grove St. or any other gangs involvement in those areas too. I think it said in the wiki that the "Rollin' Heights Ballas" were the original set and that's where most of their "OG's" are located.

When Lamar and Franklin talk on this subject, it is said that most of Grove Ogs died and the ones who were left got rich and eventually went away. Possibly CJ got more and more involved with big business and white colar crimes. Sweet was possibly alone dealing with a whole new generation of hoodlums who didn't acknowleged him or any of the old shcool sutff. Sweet was either killed; forced to leave the hood himself or he simply got tired of the hardship in the hood after living the good life CJ had brought them. Ryder wants his Graffitis at the pizza Restaurant which is in Idlewood and the first Graffiti Mission starts in Idlewood. So there is still a annexation even though very passive. Till the End of the Story where you actually have to fight it back.
When it comes to Willowfield. There are the big black grove graffities all over the place. It was once a Grove Territory. The Vagos say to CJ "go back to willowfield Ese" "i smoked your camaradas in east los" and the Aztecas say "stay out of Willowfield putos" "i blasted your idlewood carnal" " i smoked your willowfield carnal "you let vagos in your Barrio holmes" so that big area between the Grove, Seville and Aztecas belonged to the grove. probably 1-2 vagos areas between grove and seville too. in my view since the Families lost the Territories, to the ballas because they wanted access to the Docks and factory grounds so they can bring the drugs, money and weapons in. The Seville are at odds with the Grove. Temple in other Hand the biggest between the three just sees them as a liability and just does their own business. As they are in the fancier areas they probably allow the Ballas to sell their products and earn a little too and the Ballas tolerate them in return.

I never understood that why a gangster (SWEET) who is the leader of GSF and is a hardcore criminal has such moral high ground against selling drugs. He and his gang indulge in many kinds of illegal acts, killings, gang wars and what not. He could be a person whom the common people in Los Santos dread of, a person with whom no law abiding and normal person would like to cross paths with or mess with. After all this, why the hell is he trying to be a good guy in a dirty game of power and politics by not indulging in drugs business? Afterall at the end of the day their goal is to expand their territories and become more and more powerful in San Andreas. When they are basically gangsters and criminals by profession, why the hell is he adamant on not selling drugs and allowing rival gangs like Ballas and Vagos to become stronger and letting GSF get weaker day by day. He isn't even finding out an alternative way to expand GSF's influence and only complains and cribs all day long. If you have such moral high grounds then why the fuck are you running a gang which indulges in illegal acts and business, shut all that up and get a fucking job of a cashier at a pizza place (maybe he won't be eligible for that too considering his criminal history and record). I started hating his character slowly, he was singlehandedly responsible for the fall of GSF due to his stubbornness and lack of leadership. He never did anything good for GSF, all he did was blame CJ for every damn thing. Maybe this could have been the main reason for CJ going to Liberty City 5 years ago to live a new life away from his dumb brother and gang bullshit. C.R.A.S.H. being a unit of corrupt cops (Tenpenny, Pulaski, Hernandez) who are willing to let the gangs sell drugs so that both of the parties earn and benefit from it is such a great opportunity for GSF and any other gang in Los Santos but Sweet was too dumb to understand this. He was trying to be a good and righteous guy in a game which is dirty and immoral from top to bottom. Big Smoke was smart enough to grab the opportunity and convince Sweet but he denied while having no other plans regarding future of GSF. However I do not support the betrayal of Big Smoke but he also had no other choice left, either he had to die himself in the hands of C.R.A.S.H. or let Sweet die so that he could get into drugs business and become powerful. Big Smoke unlike Sweet was concerned about GSF's future that is why he struck a deal with C.R.A.S.H. and was willing to convince Sweet so that GSF could also get stronger but his plan failed and was left with no choice. Big Smoke was also getting threatened for life and blackmailed by C.R.A.S.H., he simply chose his life over Sweet's. I cannot say whether he was right or wrong but no one would like to die for a dumb guy (Sweet) who has no plans for the gang and thinks that the world would run on his whims and fancies.

That is a perfect summary, homie 😃 The only thing we would like to add is the ridiculousness of him being against hard drugs like cocaine when he knows Ryder and some other OGs are using PCP, which as a matter of fact, is quite a hard drug! 😂 🤦‍♂️

My take on sweet is this we all know he stands on his principles and he is willing to die for his hood sweet is like most old school ppl when times change they dont want to adapt or accept change … sweet was right in not wanting drugs in the hood but as a leader he is supposed to find another solution for the gang to follow ppl will only stay loyal but for so long because at the end of the day the soldiers are going to start to think for themselves survival mode kicks in because they start looking around like yeah sweet i hear you but how else am i going to eat if we’re not selling drugs ??? … the world grows and evolves and sweet was stuck holding onto a way of thinking that was running his gang into the ground and he also would refuse to give up leadership a good leader must know when they no longer have it and delegate … CJ was perfect to take over that leadership role because CJ had the same mindset as sweet about drugs but was willing to lead the gang in a different direction he thought outside the box and had the mindset of an entrepreneur where sweet says “you sound just like smoke right now” except smoke was in it for greed and for his self only … CJ was in it to go legit and uplift his community and his family in the process and to eventually leave the gang life behind him

If you ask me, the story would have been much better had Sweet conceded his own mistakes that caused Grove's downfall instead of putting all the blame on CJ even though Sweet, as the gang's leader, should also be sharing the blame for not actually doing anything about it. I may empathize with Sweet, but I don't sympathize with him at all.

I think there were a few factors that made Grove Street disadvantaged. One, it was the introduction of crack, which GSF and also Los Aztecas refused to deal with, and that's why those are the two smaller gangs compared to Vagos and Ballas when CJ gets back from LC. I think it's good that they didn't deal with it, but they should have teamed up earlier to take out the Vagos and Ballas who were threatening their existence. I don't think Sweet was wrong to abstain from dealing drugs, but the drugs helped the other gangs and they took too long to react to those threats.
Also, traitors from within the family, and dissent, which is partially Sweet's fault. It's not his fault that Big Smoke was a traitor, but he probably should have figured out that Smoke was inching towards betraying him with his obsessive attitude towards money, and wanting to deal crack. He is, however, responsible for the GSF's old school mentality, which held them back from other, more ethical, sources of making money which CJ has seen to, and which led to their resurgence. Sweet is a great leader, but he's too old fashioned, and he needs CJ and also Kendl's youthful, more entrepreneurial minds more than he realizes, and he should have always involved them more.

I think the attempted attack on sweet was viewed by the GSF's rivals as "If they could do that to GSF, then the GSF's powermis weakening and now it's time to retake what should be ours" basically it showed a weakness that GSF was getting weaker and that if they attack then GSF can't attack them... if that makes sense. English isn't my first language.

Sweet was a poor leader, i always thought that the reason why he was mad at cj for leaving was because cj was the real G in his hood and people naturally respected and followed him. He just had alot of guilt from what happened to his younger brother which he felt was because of him and thats why he left . Probably because sweet blames him for everything. But sweet to me is weak

Maybe Brian was dead and CJ didn't expect it. Sweet blamed him, while he's the oldest. While the oldest task is protect his siblings. And that's why, CJ felt like : "It was my fault" or blaming himself and felt hurt. You know what it's like being blamed by someone because of something that's you can't control ? And that's why, he run away and escape from toxic environment, like Sweet. To calm his mind and mentality.
Because Tony himself can't hold it anymore, when his Ma treats him badly very often. He can't enjoy his life and his Ma often bothered him too much.
I don't know where were he's been, before any mission in LCS. But I think he was in mentally peace, before : "Sh*t, here we go again.."
I can understand CJ more, because I ever felt that way. When nobody understand you and blame you for something, while it's theirs too.

A lot of you ppl get sweet misunderstood He’s the oldest brother Dealing with his little brother Brian dying & CJ running away out of guilt then once CJ left The Set Fell because GSF is a family thing Sweet the leader yeah but He can’t do it all by himself which Is why he always talked shit To CJ bec he abandoned his family an CJ was 2nd Leader Which is commissioner smoke an Ryder was his lieutenant’s. CJ leaving lead to his mom dying if CJ wouldn’t have left maybe their mother wouldn’t have died So I honestly get sweets point of view ya look at him as mean to CJ but he’s not quite wrong for it either Cuz one person can’t do it all an most gonna say CJ took over hoods etc but that’s game logic ofc cj has to cuz he’s the main character sweet took hoods as well but we don’t see him do it cuz he’s not the main character also for u ppl saying sweet don’t do nothing is stupid ya act like ya didn’t have to do missions with sweet an when you did what sweet did shoot weather if u see his aim off an him not hit his targets but thts gta logic I do blame sweet but not all the way they all had their faults an Sweet gave CJ his props when he said CJ changed da hood by himself

Sure, we know that Sweet couldn't do everything by himself, but AT LEAST he could do something 🙂 And he's a gang leader for Christ's sake, he has to think about his organization while putting his sad feelings aside. Some people here already gave great ideas, such as establishing more businesses to get more money for the gang's survival. Find some alternatives if he doesn't want drugs in the hood. Make new contacts for weapons, there's so much he could do, you know. 😉
