- There are many cases in the Grand Theft Auto franchise, where we are right in the middle of the gang wars. Los Santos Vagos and Varrio Los Aztecas, Cubans and Haitians, and so on and so forth. However, the vast majority of the players around the world are mostly focused on the conflict between Families and Ballas. This massive warfare turned out to be one of the most crucial points in the whole story - Tenpenny and Big Smoke really profited from it, but also lost in the end. CJ and Sweet (mainly CJ) were doing everything they could to get the Families back to the top. Did they succeed? What do we know about this conflict outside of the game world? These questions will be answered in this episode.

Sweet mentions on the phone that the "Ballas and Vagos" have taken over, so grove street must have had some territories on the vagos side too. I would say the East Beach's territories since they are closer.

Very true! But they don’t adopt anything about the team but the colors and letters of hats for gang identification. I’m from America and have been around crips and bloods from L.A. back in my younger days. I now live in Athens Greece and they are absolutely crazy about their sports and definitely have hooligan gang fights about their teams, colors, and territory… It’s crazy.

@@neilpatrickhairless The homies are actually deadly if you do all the 100 tags tho. They spawn with Deagle and MP5 and they kill enemies in a few seconds lol doing a drive by with them will result in blowing enemy cars immediately
It is absolutely mind blowing and fantastic how the devs connected the dots and based the game environment of real events from that period of time in LA - Crips vs Bloods vs Latin gangs (don't forget the Vagos) rivalry or infamous LA riots. This is surely one of the best games ever made.
Facts man! I’m currently taking advantage of the riot at the end of the game to takeover all the gang turf in the remastered trilogy. Helps keep the cops off since I’m doing a no cheats playthrough. Only one mission left

You can't blame Sweet for slipping after Brian and his mom was killed. Also, you can't blame Sweet for not wanting to sell drugs in the hood. Smoke was plotting against the Grove ever since CJ left to Liberty City. Smoke knew CJ's potential and loyalty to his brother and sister, and knew how dangerous he could be. CJ was supposed to die with Brian, but luckily he ran away and saved himself. Ever since he returned from Liberty City, Smoke has been putting him in life-threatening situations. Starting with C.R.A.S.H. picking him up. Smoke told Tenpenny exactly when CJ would arrive. He just so happened to be in the Johnson house right when CJ got back. Then he smashed the picture of momma Johnson by dropping the baseball bat on it to hug CJ. Smoke knew that the only way to elevate himself to drug kingpin status while dissolving the Families was to try to convince Sweet to start pushing dope.

However, we can't really see that you have raised any point defending Sweet here. We are aware of the fact that Sweet could be really depressed when Brian died. And we know that Sweet's stance on hard drugs was actually something good. We are blaming Sweet for the downfall of the Families because he was passive. If he decided not to enter the drug market, why he didn't try to find new ways to earn more money for the gang? Why he didn't start making deals, and getting weapons? Sweet and Ryder ran CJ out of Los Santos in the 1st place when CJ survived when CJ was supposed to die with Brian then got mad when CJ went somewhere he was welcomed which was New York City. Sweet lost a brother and pushed the other brother away and didn't find alternatives supplemental incomes (e.g. the arms trade) and let his "racism" cost him an alliance with the also-anti-narcotic Aztecas led by Cesar Vialpando thus was actively and passively at fault for the Orange Grove Street Families' decline when is why Kendl rightly called Sweet "a no-good narrow-minded hypocrite gangbanger" and TenPenny rightly reminded CJ how Sweet and Ryder ran CJ out of Los Santos. Families ain't shit without CJ. CJ's the real leader of Orange Grove Street Families.
@@miguelpasamano4995 Sweet wasn't racist. Just because he said he doesn't want Kendyl to be with a Latino, doesn't mean he is racist. Sweet is narrow minded, but he is the oldest sibling of the Johnsons. Older siblings are usually less progressive than the younger ones. Sweet was just old school, and stubborn. Also, older siblings usually have the responsibility of disciplining the younger ones. When it comes to a situation as serious the youngest brother dying in your presence (remember that CJ flaked out on Brian when they started shooting at them), you are bound to take some of the blame. I also know that CJ ran away from LS, just because Tenpenny says that "they ran you out" doesn't mean it's true. Both Sweet and Ryder can be heard saying that CJ ran away. He made his own decision after likely feeling guilty about not doing, or not being able to do anything about Brian getting killed. Sweet and Ryder only ever blamed CJ for not taking the bullet that killed Brian. They didn't push him out of LS, but they did blame him for Brian's death. They also blamed him for running away, which is understandable. Sweet is not the smartest or most progressive, but he values loyalty over everything, which is the old school gangster way of thinking. That's also the reason he lets Ryder smoke and produce drugs. Because Ryder is always down to bang for the Grove. Also, Ryder has been involved with drugs since the age of 10, so there really isn't anything anyone can do about it. He is an old family friend, and he also never moved out the Grove unlike the traitor Smoke
@@miguelpasamano4995 Sweet did nothing for OGSF after his moms and brother died, because he was depressed. He was obviously the father figure in the Johnson house, and felt responsible for all the deaths. A depressed person neglects their facilities because they feel they have lost control over anything in their life. I'm not surprised that he tried to keep Kendyl from being with Cesar, because she was all that was left of the Johnsons after the SHTF. I also think Smoke was constantly whispering bullshit in Sweet's ears, while plotting the families against each other behind Sweet's back. Smoke could talk a bunch of shit about Sweet to the different families and they would all believe him because he was the leader's right hand man.
It is heavily hinted that part of Willowfield was also Families turf before the events of the game, probably part of the Seville boulevard set, since Emmet's SBV and has his shop on the heart of the territory. Then they lost influence in Willowfield and ended up with only their stronghold, Playa del Seville. It's kinda what happened with GSF, controlling Idlewood and then losing influence, retracting to their HQ, Ganton. This made difficult for sets to communicate since the territory that held Seville and Grove together (Willowfield) was now gone and the Ballas used it to attack both sets. Temple was also very far from South Central, so they were practically a separate gang until the Families got back together during Reuniting the families mission. After that, I think both Temple and Seville disbanded and the territories CJ takes back after Home coming mission are all under the GSF set. As a final note, I love turf wars in GTA:SA I would've loved the storyline to contain more mission revolving turf wars (for example, to eliminate a Ballas set and then their stronghold, lets say, Rollin Heights Ballas set and their HQ, Jefferson). GTA SA is my most favorite GTA ever. GTA 3 had gangs but you never have your own gang (something even 4 didn't). VC you get your gang but they don't play any role in the story until 100% when you can recruit but at that point it was pointless. But GTA San Andreas brought some of the coolest features ever driving trains, learning different combat styles in gyms, six different cloth shops (my most fav was Diader Sachs for the cool expensive Tuxedo), enhanced swimming (including diving udner water), large map whith 3 different cities desert countryside, casino gambling parachuting from Mount Chilliad where you can even do Chilliad Challenges, arcade games like Go Go Space Monkey, playing pool, dating girl friends and getting rewards like cop outfit from Barbara and not losing weapons when arrested and the list goes on and on, so much features even GTA 5 and Online didn''t have but the best feature ever was gang wars and taking over enemy territories. Loved recruting GSF boys and fighting Ballas and Vagos, taking over their territories and then we have other gangs like Aztecas, and SF's Rifas, Triads and Da Nang Boyz and LV's Mafia. But the biggewst rivalry was GSF vs Ballas, it was so well crafted, in cleaning the hood we learn they are our sword enemies and spray on them chocking them to death (Ryder attacked his school teacher for wearing Balla cloths we learn at robbing Uncle Sam) , after Green Saber (where Ballas ambush Homies and when CJ arrives a wounded Sweet tells him to save himslef but CJ bravel;y says "I aion't running out on my brother, yo Bllas I am taking you down, i am taking you all down) and kills them all then surrenders to the cops, they take over GSF territories and near the end we need (I forgot palyed 2006-2019, maybe less or more) 40% of gang territories for final mission where Ballas are also heavily involved in Big Smoke's hideout guarding him. Killing Ballas was one of my fav thing, after taking over their territories on pc version I used editor to bring them back, had kill count of 100,000 Ballas, killing them every way from stealth with knife to minigun to bike drivebys and so on, it was so much fun to fight them. i noticed Big Smoke attacked Vagos but never attacked Ballas cause he allied with them, but never understood why even after killing top Vagos members (like in Running Dog), Vagos still guard Smoke in the final mission, would be cool if you did an analysis on that. Anyway gang wars is my most favorite GTA feature ever and GSF vs Ballas story was amazing and well done, GSF for Life and Ballas are my most favorite fictional enemies ever!
Now we need a video about what happened to Umberto and his gang. Also I am pretty sure Umberto was a better gang leader than Sweet.

CJ already made up his mind about keeping his commitments to Kendl, Cesar, Woozie, and Madd Dogg who now have much more influence over CJ than Sweet ever had or will ever have again.

@@gaminginvestigators Chasing Tenpenny with rioters on the loose and the Mafia section in Las Venturas I saw the video you posted with the Mafia casino and CJ screwed over all the Mafia families which lead to the war in Liberty City Stories you should do a full video on the Forelli Family the Leone family and the Sindacco family war that starts after Sonny Forelli died The Sindaccos get completely destroyed by 2001 but the Forelli Family is still around but completely weakened and at war with Joey Leone Salvatore Leone's son

Worth mentioning that the Families used to run Willowfield as well, as it frontier with Sev. Boulevard Families and Grove Turf, it also has Emmet living there, a lot of tags from the Grove and the biggest proof, when the Vagos taunt CJ on the streets they will say "go back to willowfield ese" meaning that at some point, they ran that part of the city.
Also, I believe they ran the south portion of East LS, as there also some tags there and it frontier with Grove as well
Yup, that cluckin bell north of grove street over the bridge and that car wash are also GSF territory prior too losing parts of their turf in 1992..
Willowfield is also a predominantly black area as well regardless of the gang influences. So the ese could possibly mean go back to where your people reside. GtaSA is set to mimic LA in the early 90s and racial tensions then were at a all time high.

What is “groove” street?
I think the game implies that before the Families got as weak as we meet them at the start of gta san andreas they controlled the turf we see at the start of the game plus at least a couple of territories in Idlewood and Wlewood (where Emmet lives) and maybe a few streets in East Los Santos immediately outside of Ganton.
I thought they also owned Glenn Park but I could be wrong. I just thought they owned it.
The reason why I said no to hard drugs was because he wasn't just thinking about the gang. He was thinking about the community, The black community that is. The problem was he didn't give the gang alternative to make it money.

Families are actually based on the crips gang due to the fact they always set trip like crips and ballas are based on the the bloods since they outnumbered and stick together

If we take all of the hood after the last mission the ballas will disappear or they will be dressed as normal civilians of Los santos. I've witnessed that after taking over all the hoods of Los Santons ballas drive around in majestic car and the game turns them into one of the taxi drivers with gray jacket. Whenever they drive around the hood the families starts to attack them.

I don't agree with your point that GSF vanish after Big Smoke took over. This is because we can still see GSF member in drug courier mission that takes place after we learn that Big Smoke involve in drug trafficking to SF. They also become hostile towards CJ when we are close to them.
That's because those GSF members betrayed Grove and are dressed like that to trick everyone.
You are right, there were a few Families members that were acting as Big Smoke's couriers. However, when we were saying that the Families were out of existence, we meant the situation on the map to be more precise. It's that they are not present anywhere, that's all.

How are GTA V and GTA SA are connected when the state of San Andreas doesn't exact same landmass, counties, towns and lakes?
Aside from Los Santos, all other rural towns and counties featured in GTA SA doesn't exist in GTA V. Only counties featured in GTA V for Los Santos County and Blaine County.
Mount Chiliad in GTA SA isn't the exactly same as Mount Chiliad in GTA V, they're two different mountain with the same name. Even Mount Gordo don't exist in the 3D universe.
Red Country doesn't appear in GTA V, and Grapeseed didn't existed in GTA SA either. Also Los Santos in both games aren't the exact same city, despite sharing names of some districts such as East Los Santos, Downtown Los Santos, Richman and Vinewood. But GTA V rendition of Los Santos has Burton, Mission Row, Pillbox Hill, Rockford Hills, Vespucci Beach and Canals which aren't featured in GTA SA.

If it's the same, then why is CJ's house suddenly turned into a yellow single-story house? Why does the cul-de-sac look much different in shape? Even the storm drain is completely on a different side compared to GTA SA's rendition. Los Santos in both games are NOT the same. Are you saying that people houses and arpartments will sudden disappear in 10 - 20 years?
Sure NYC doesn't look the same as they did before years ago, but it still have same old apartment and houses, Times Square still exists, so does the Empire State Building.

I think after the end of the game the families reclaimed their turf to more or less be on equal footing with the ballas and just focused keeping their turf clean of crack and defend it against the ballas. And as far as the ballas are concerned I’m sure they still had some powerful contacts and leaders left but after seeing what cj could do on his own they left the families alone

Events between gta sa and gta v obviously are connected with each other. You have a few stories about groove street and CJ in gta v. Also CJ is popular on many ads in gta v.
There's only one way Carl can keep things together during the riots, one way he can keep Grove Street safe while helping the people out and earning the people's faith in the GSF: call in Woozie to have his boys airlift in a goddamn TANK. And it works. Even Toreno, watching events from far away, can only compliment Carl's ironclad balls (and resourcefulness) on this.

I don't know much about L.A gang culture because I'm from NYC but I remember when I played San Andreas the first time I always assumed the families were crips and the ballas were bloods but after playing GTA 5 and seeing videos such as this I feel now that the ballas/families conflict is a representation of the crip/blood conflict as a whole not necessarily Individualized sort of it's whatever the player wants it to be the gangs are aren't set in stone

Sweet either got Grove Street onboard with the family businesses or history repeated itself with no homecoming this time the latter being most probable which together with CJ's death in 2010 explains why we see Ballaz instead of Families on Grove Street in 2013.

Ballas won in the end, while the HD and 3D universe are separate, there's some correlations between the two universes as the ballas and families and FIB exist in both universes. Grove Street is taken by the Ballas and the families are struggling even in GTA 5
As much as it sucks to say, Ballas took grove st, Ryder was right and CJ was a buster/not loyal to the families from the start. CJ only returned for his moms funeral and went back to grove st out of guilt. Once CJ took back the grove, did all the missions, it still wasn't enough to maintain power. I think what ended up happening long term was CJ had multiple enterprises going for him, the sports cars, casinos, rap game, and CJ needed Sweet, his sis, Caesar to help him manage all of it, and its not unreasonable for Sweet to choose CJ over the grove, which left families without any leadership and they'd soon collapse and the Ballas would gain a foothold again once CJ wasn't terrorizing them and distracted with his other businesses since both CJ and the Ballas (not the families) did have a good thing going.
CJ left the hood to pursue bigger endeavors eventually, he isn't going to bring along the families with him as he didn't ask for any of the families help / contacts once he as kicked out of Los Santos which says alot about CJ's relationship with his gang, hell Big Smoke got picked up by his brother from jail rather then calling one of his homies or a low ranking gang member to pick him up and meet CJ at his crib. I think that's why the families were falling apart in the first place, not just because of the drug money the Ballas had but because Sweet, CJ, Smoke, Ryder, Big Bear, ect, were the toughest people around the block yet they kept a closed circle and didn't let the other members in on major gigs. Ballas were probably tighter and better payed which is why they were so willing to throw themselves at the families. I think the Bllas weren't fighting the gove st families so much as they were trying to get rid of CJ and Sweet so they can intergrade the families into their schemes, sweet being the grove street bully that didn't want to chill and make money.
I feel like sweet is still too stubborn to even join CJ with his rich life. Though because sweet still isn't really a good leader, the ballas would, as you say, come back to power and take over Glen park and idlewood and would probably return to drug business, basically the territory looks like the start of the game again. Then, the ballas would take over grove street once and for all.
Though maybe in this scenario, sweet would die one day fighting against the ballas, which might lead to carl getting revenge against the ballas.
But still, I agree. The moment carl became a rich and powerful man in the whole state, meant that grove street was destined to fall.

If your talking about the black tags seen across Los Santos, then those are old tags from the 70s and 80s. The Families did in fact control parts of Willowfield. From where those old tags are located it was most likely East and Central Willowfield. East Willowfield being Seville Boulevard Families turf due to proximity and Central Willowfield being OGF/GSF turf. Also, Glen Park is one of the original Balla Hoods, stated in game. It’s where the Kilo Trey Ballas call home/main base.
IMO after the last mission either Ballas or police killed Sweet that made CJ finally be able to leave the hood and go to San Fierro as he wanted when he got Sweet out of jail and starts somekind of business whit Cesar and Kendl leaving all the gang shit behind
