Wanted to make something for my wife on her birthday. Never carved anything in my life, I am 57 years old. Knew it would suck. Carved a lopsided owl, creepy eyes, stupid looking feet. Gave it to her today at lunch on her birthday. She cried. Said it was the most beautiful thing ever. Find someone who doesn’t think you suck. Even when you do. And then never let go.

Grew up in a perfectionist family. My dad would always tell me "if you're not going to do it the right way then don't do it at all" so that's exactly what I did. If I wasn't naturally good or if I didn't find it engaging enough I just wouldn't do it at all. Now I'm 25 and am just now realizing how much I missed out on by the lack of "failure" in my life.

"if you're not going to do it the right way then don't do it at all"
I think there's truth to this saying but I think there has to be a clearer distinction between "doing things the right way" and "getting it right". I used to hear my parents say that to me and I understood it as "don't do it if you're just going to fail". Now that I'm a little older, I've come to understand that maybe "failure" is a fundamental part of
"doing things the right way", and eventually, getting it right.

By contrast, there's a scientist who credits his career to a moment when he was a little kid and spilled a giant jug of milk all over the kitchen floor.
His mom came in and went "Wow! I have never seen such an enormous puddle of milk! Well, since it's there already, want to play in it?"
They played in the milk for a while, and then she said "At some point, we're going to need to clean this up; would you prefer to use a mop, a rag, or some paper towels?"
After they'd cleaned it up, she said "What we have here is a failed experiment in how to carry a heavy milk jug with those tiny hands. Let's go to the back yard and see if we can do better." And they spent a while with a jug full of water, helping the kid figure out how to hold it and how to pour without spilling (too much).
That day he realized that he doesn't have to fear mistakes, and that mistakes are opportunities for learning and experimentation. And his entire career as a scientist stems back to that one moment of great parenting.

"Anything worth doing is worth doing poorly." - G. K. Chesterton
You are so right. I fall into this mental trap all too often, thinking if I don't have the time or mental energy to put my all into something, I may as well rest now and do it later. Only to do the same thing the next day.
When I first heard this quote, I think the example that went with it was brushing your teeth--brushing for a quick 30 seconds in the morning as you rush out the door is better than not brushing at all, but it's opened up a whole new mindset for me in regards to many things in life.

thank you for this video, I'm 27 and only just really learning to find the joy in pushing past that fear of failure and actually trying something new, the narrative in my head has always been the same and has probably held me back more than I've ever realised - "don't do X, THEY will think.." and I attach that thinking to most of the people around me, believing that I'll no longer be accepted by people if my actions don't align with their needs or their perception of me.
Realising this has initially been a big step for me, mainly because it's helping me realise that the less I put myself into this box I've created for my mind, I allow myself to be more authentic which pulls people in and feels great because I've tried to be other peoples idea of good for most my adult life, which if anything has only pushed them away and left me somewhat isolated... I thought I had to hold it all in and squeeze myself into the right shape for the right person, place or situation. but actually I need to explode into my own shape and find where it best fits
there's not much in the way of positive reinforcement around me but things like this video make me feel more confident that I'm on the right path or at least trying to walk it
    just needed a grateful/positive vent
do what you want people! there's a whole world of shit to do out there and even more people who won't get to experience it, trapped by their own pain and fear
my boss will be thrilled to hear im no longer scared of doing a bad job!

Practice and time spent in it makes the difference. I have learnt how to crochet by looking videos on RUclips, then I just took the time to practice, again and again, until I was able to make a poor little ball with lots of holes in it... But I was just so proud of myself. Proud of achieving something with my hands. And now, years later, I am able to make plushies that look really nice, I have crocheted lots of shawls and other things, I wear them with pride... Not cheaper than buying something, but more fullfilling.
When I was young I thought that if I wasn't good at something directly at the beginning, I would never be. Being good is not important, working to get better without giving up makes the difference. When I try something too difficult, I stop before getting disgusted by it, take the difficulty down for some time, then come back later on the hard part. And it works ! That means I needed more practicing, not that I am bad or that I cannot get better.
As we say in French, "Paris ne s'est pas construite en un jour" (meaning : "Paris has not been built in one day"). Take the time to learn, practice and don't give up ! Just enjoy it :) !
And remember : we all had to learn to walk, and we all sucked at it !

Damn, that is deep. As you arised not only a perfectionism being mashed into our heads subconsciously through some phrase like 20-30 years ago at school, but also a topic of people thinking that everybody will judge them based on how they do and what they do, aka overexaggerating that everyone will think about what they say and what exactly they say, when most of people just either won’t care or will not even think about it more than a milisecond.
Though, I agree, as without doing mistakes you won’t become a master at something, not even master, but just normal at something, because sure, you can be good at something, but if you never made mistakes in that aspect you are good at, then you simply won’t be ready to solve them in case they really occur.

I read a book about creative writing, the writer of the book tells the reader "if you can't write something good, then you should write something bad."
The message behind it is that, people tend to procrastinate because they think they are not good enough.
On the other hand, people who write something bad, get the job done. He said, "The thing about bad writing is that, it can be edited and improved later." Though I'm not a writer myself (just hobby), this advice really help me a lot.

This video did really touched on my life quite a bit, well explained about the problems in this type of situation. I can't thank enough with this video, so really thank you. I take action in communicating with Hiligaynon to people i'll meet in next month and with judgement, and criticism from other people, I'll don't mind and care about those and i'll improve on those criticisms to further improve on this language. I feel this. Some times its easy to forget how things build. You see someone good at making music. Why would I ever try? But that misses the point. It takes so much time to get good at something

I agree - that's how I feel about my music. I'm not a professional musician by any means but I love writing, creating and playing and so I just produce my own stuff and share it, even if it sucks or is miles behind all the incredible stuff that's out there today.
It's not always about doing something right, or beeing strong. Sometimes its just about feeling right or feeling strong. Like you said... Who judges these things anyway?
And I came to notice that most people actually choose to be gentle and encouraging 🙂

Once again, you've sent my brain into a rabbit hole of thoughts.
    Especially this part.
3:50 - "... or there's no serious moral qualms with the thing that you're about to do..." - that's the entirety of my life's inner conflict summed up.
    Good video. Thx.

You made references to what is basically imprinting of ideas/feelings in childhood...that carry over as we mature. True. Sadly, what you say here needs to be said in school, starting at the young age where (usually negative) thoughts take root...and it's not.

such a nice pronunciation, so clear, so easy for those who are not natives, just as I am.
This topic actually applies very good to my experience with English. Yes... my English was "never good enough" until I understood that it would never be good enough... But working in a call center, talking to natives I realised that sometimes you just have to try and to give it a try, cause I'll never be 100% prepared and well trained and with perfect situation and conditions for doing whatever.

I'm Brazilian and I'm starting my career as a programmer at 30 years old. These voices often stay in my head, bringing a feeling of discomfort, as if I shouldn't try because a 15-year-old boy is already a programmer and I probably won't have any chance, so know that this video helped me a lot. Thanks

I was never an athlete growing up… I was comically uncoordinated. But I started training MMA and it changed my life. It showed me I am capable of anything I put my mind to and that mentality has translated to everything else in my life. Just do it!

Competitive games, (cs, rocket league) was what made me realise this for the first time, I always sucked at them, only when I began training for them in secret did I realise that I could improve, and really that was all that was missing.
You just have to keep trying, keep training, you'll get there eventually.
This led me to studying math, suddenly the math isn't scary once you know you can improve.

Just the right time I found this video. I used to like runing and doing DYI projects at home/garage/garden and I stopped cause of people's opinion. Its been 3 days since I've started runing again (3km per day) Also I cleaned my garage to make homemade dumbels and weights. When I shared it with people that are in my life they didn't say anything bad, but gave me a weird look. This video made me realise even if it's not perfect if I enjoy the process and what i've made and achieved then who cares what other think. Thanks Joey!
