I like how Iron Head's fight in Ikachan is pretty much Oppression. Creates nice ties between Cave Story and Ikachan.

Perhaps the sea where ikachan happened in was a hidden branch of the island? As they had to escape that said area. (Regardless of the normal ending or best ending where the fall is stopped, they would have reason to believe the island was fucked.)
