Great video. Been out of PC gaming a while. Good review for the old times. Grabbed a 980 Ti Strix used for $260 with plenty of warranty left in a new build I did. Decided to OC just a bit. I settled that 1341MHz/7700MHz was plenty enough. Sticks around 75* benchmarking. I'll be happy with those numbers.
Thank you man, never really OCed a graphics card before and my 980ti is on the way. Guide was very informative and I'll for sure be looking back while I'm OCing!
Best overclocking guide i've seen! Thanks dude!
thanks alot my dude, gpus are still quite expensive where i am (due to exchange rate, buying a 1080ti is comparable to buying a 2080ti),and my gpu held up rather nicely all this time. its getting into its age,so overclocking was the way to go.
Palit 980 jetstream, got my gpu clock to +200mhz, memory clock +500 @56°C with 125% power targetr locked with 91°C temps. power draw is finally 100% (never saw it go over 80% before i overclocked)
no fans or rgb lighting was harmed in this overclocking.
Using 2 980ti MSI cards in SLI and
managed to get both to 1550core and +270 on the mem, good guide thanks.
awesome guide, helped me a lot, reached +225 core and +500 memory any higher made my drivers crash or I had to increase core voltage which I don't want to touch, cheers mate!
Thanks for the explanation. Been researching information like this, and it's very helpful. Have you ever had a GPU completely fail from overclocking?
Thx m8 gr8 vid. About to get some of these cards :) hope my 5820k doesn't bottleneck my 2 980ti's
Hi There, very informative vid, just finished purchasing my 980ti, and this will assist me in getting the best from the card, i am a novice at the overclock practise, bit will be learning fast ;-)
RG, thanks so much for the video, very helpful!
Still going strong very good video bro👍🏻
Thanks! Very comprehensive detailed tutorial :D
Very clear and nice video finally! Subbed! ;-)
Wow thanks, first useful overclocking tutorial. Big thumbs up!! c: managed to boost up memory by 500MHz and clock by 120MHz. Over all progres: 10+ extra fps in gaming :) I used GTX 980Ti MSI-edition.
What was your average temperature?
Thanks really helped a lot best guide iv'e seen!
What temperature is the sweet spot for the GPU and VRAM temperature while carefully monitoring and overclocking? I have a new MSI 980 Ti Gaming edition. I haven't played with core voltage (I'm about to now), but I crash with a +165 overclock & I'm trying to prevent that from happening so often and so easily. +160 is stable, but I would love to get it stable around +170-180.
I support this channel! Nice job
Best tutorial on youtube, subbed
I was wondering what is the temp we should not go over, how did you get to that layout
Only thing that I am missing in this tutorial is actually showing artifacts that occurs
I think mine was when I hit 550+ Memory Clock, I saw flickering black dots on walls and stuff, when I moved the camera
Had it on 600, then it flickered black dots on the walls like every second
My Superposition Benchmark is always crashing when i click the Afterburner or any other programm. Help pls
Awesome video. I'll have a crack with my Ti tomorrow. Subd
my gigabyte g1 gaming gtx 980ti got +135mhz in coreclock reaching the 1477mhz and +500 mhz in memory clock reaching 4001mhz not passing the 69 degree mark... good tutorial dude!! do you think i should push it farther? ive got plenty of room of core voltage (im now at +20)
I have msi 980ti card what numbers should I put in msi afterburner to OC? Can you please reply?
i do not know what max temp should be set please if you can help thank you
Excellent video. I wanted to see some other OC's and where they landed on this card. I didnt push my system too much.
I ended up at 1392/3505 . I went up to 500 on the Mem and 275 on Core. Its very stable.
Running Haswell i7 5280k
Asus Sabertooth X99
MSI Factory GTX 980ti
32gb Crucial Ballistix 2133 DD4 RAM
*****
Ran at steady 60-90 FPS on a 4k at those settings too.
If you look at the stone(s) at 9:25 you see some missing textures, is this "normal"? I have the same thing on my 980 ti (and some flickering shadows) and I can't seem to sort it out no matter what settings I run. Also, I experience frequent crashes in pretty much any game I run. I've tried different drivers and MSI Afterburner settings but nothing helps. The only thing any of the drivers did was to fix the Chrome crashes with the 353.38 driver, anything prior and I can't use Chrome. I'm starting to regret I decided to give Nvidia another go. Never had any problems with AMD cards...
Can you share what is the exact card you are using? The brand/model? Is it a reference design?
Is this a hardware, software, bios or heat limit on overclock?
Can I do this on my Strix Asus GTX 980 ti? With MSi program?
More I overclock, the less fps I get. No artifacts or freezes and gpu temps is below 75c.
Cpu doesn't seems to be bottlenecking it either.
Is this normal or could there be some kind of hardware issue?
If i try to clock over +150 core I have issues, how did you get 280????
my gpu gets to 70c when i put my fan on 50+ is that a problem or do i need fan's?
How hot may i run it before it's not recommended to go any further?
Was yours watercooled? Mine's hitting 90c
how much u do in firestrike graphics score?
I have the MSI 980Ti Golden Edition. Default clock is 1140, men 1753, boost 1228. I have +130 on the clock bringing it to 1270, +630 which is insane on memory bringing it to 2068, and the boost to 1358. My GPU clock isn't that good, but memory is insane, and it is 100% stable and runs cool with a good fan profile.
I have problems i run this benchmark and all fine but sometimes when play and " I have a problem ... I use the same benchmark and it works fine with the graphics card but then when game "mainly" in csgo sometimes have crash problems... WHY?
What is the Max Voltage i should set it to?
980Ti founder's
on air still
settled for +208 core
+495 mem
allow max power draw
left core volt alone
I got a solid 1600mhz core speed
and 4000 mem speed
ran just fine through all my gpu smashing benchmarks
never hits 70c with my aggressive fan curve
What temps are considered dangerous?
I don't get it what's the big fuss about it:) My card it oc by it self to 1415 mhz on air way do i need to brake a piece of hardware that is over 850 eur for 60-70 mhz? what do i get 1-2 fps?
does it really worths? cuz I don't see a huge improvement in UH
thanks very insightful!
er how the hell do i set the aqutomatic fan control part lol you just say find yours i dont have a clue what to set mine up as ????
Click on the Config Bottun right nest to it
Hello,
So i have a little problem.
I have a MSI GTX 980 TI GPU, and i wonna overclock it a bit. But im having issues with it.
1. I downloaded MSI Afterburner, and have set a custom fan configuration, so the card gets some more cooling.
2. I have tried amping up the core clock by increments of 50 mhz. The same i did with Memory clock.
3. I then use heaven 4 benchmark as my testing software. I also tested it with some games.
4. The more i crank up the core clock and memory clock settings, the
faster the benchmark crashes. And i get a note in the bottom right side
of the screen that the display driver has crashed. it does the same in
games aswell, suddenly it just crashes and shuts the program down.
5. I then tried to turn on just a tiny bit of voltage to the card, but with no luck. It does the same.
6. I Notice that my Power limit % setting will only go as high as 109 %.... On videos people seems to be able to set it to 110%
7. I also notice in the monitoring that the display driver crash in
the exact moment my card reaches 100 %, in the GPU Usage % monitor
window. When it's running normal it's running between 97-99%.
8. When i test and it's been running for a while, the card don't go
higher than max 75 degrees celsius in temperature. So it can't be
overheating.
Do you have any settings, ideas, or suggestions i could try?
I have read people on the internet reaching 220 mhz increase on Core clock, and around 400-500 mhz on memory clock.
So why does it seem that my card won't even overblock by only 50 mhz?
I was able to push my Sli Configuration Core +155 and Memory +500. Tried to push the core +160 but my drivers kept crashing. Pretty happy with this GPU.
with my evga 980ti + backplate + fancy fans, seemed like I could only get up to GPU clock 175, memory 300 or so : ( might try again later
Hi, are there any worth mention benefits if u are in 3d rendering and not in games? I mean lets say i oc 25% which is good, how faster it can be actually? Cause i dont like overheating this card it was too expensive lol, but if i had actual difference i d go for it :) For instance when i o/ced my cpu from 3.2 to 4.2 with low voltage, was worth it i gained a good amount in my cpu renderings, and kept temps low but im not sure about gpu im fairly new to that area. thanks
You get limited benefits from a GPU in photo/video rendering in the first place - only some applications have the ability to place and of the load on the GPU. So most of your gain is going to come from OCing the CPU like you did. You will get minimal gain, if any, from OCing your GPU for rendering.
+DemiseGaming Whats Photo rendering? Are you misinterpreting 3d rendering?
Thank you so much i have a gtx 980ti classified and i went from around 50 fps to 90 fps ;) Thank You agan!! +Sub!
FPS have to do with monitor refresh rates, if your 980ti was at 50 FPS you have some serious issues
I have 144 hz benq
Thanks for the info help alot
how to turn on core voltage?
You should take steps of 13 mHz on the core. Why? As the vBIOS is writen like that. The steps are layout in the vBIOS of 13 MhZ increments.
I dont no if thts true but if it is then i wouldnt think going less is bad maybe going over 13mhz at a time not a good idea.
Your gpu with 1 fan or more ..?
Have anyone overclocked Gainward 980 TI 6GB pheonix?
Never done this before so I went to core clock +220, memory clock 500.
No idea if this is high or low.. Felt like I could have kept going.. everything was stable and no problem.
just never done it so afraid I might fuck something up xD
Hi, I know this is a little bit late, but I have an problem with my Strix GTX 980Ti when overclocking.
I can run the card with 1455 on 1.237volt, but strangely after about 15min I get artifacts... is that normal for an unstable overclock? Like, normally you get artifacts or crashes right after some seconds. But in my case, it needs some minues until the card artifacts. Im just wondering if something is wrong with my GPU or maybe its something else?
I have some more infos (unstable overclock):
- 1455mhz core and 4000mhz memory
- 80c max in firestrike
- Fan Speed 65%
- The card reaches 290watts sometimes at 99% usage in firestrike (110% Power Limit)
- I dont get any stutters or weird frame drops etc.
- card artifacts after minutes with a bad overclock
- card only runs stable with a "higher" voltage (I have 68% asic quality)
My rock stable overclock is (40min firestrike without artifacts/crashes):
- 1405mhz core 4000mhz memory
-1.187v
- 77c in firestrike
- Fan Speed 65%
- 285 Watts max
Im wondering if my main problem here are temps? Maybe I will be able to push 1455 stable on core with less temperature? Or maybe its just my asic quality of the card?
Hope someone can help me.
Btw, when running 1455mhz on 1.205mhz, it just instantly artifacts. So my guess is with more voltage it can run stable until it hits about 75C?
I am OC-ing my GTX 980ti SeaHawk, and this was very helpful.
If you are willing to get a 980ti, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND putting in the extra $100 and getting a SeaHawk. It is almost completely silent, and it keeps the card so cool that I could overclock it from base clock of 1000MHz to almost 1600MHz. This gave it an almost 20% boost in performance from a regular OC-ed 980Ti.
+Walt McKelvie hey let's play spot the SeaHawk's fake youtube accounts!
i have 1600mhz core clock on a 960m laptop with 1.2V bios mod.
980ti just came out iam in 2022 rtx4080. ohh this video is remined me alot
😭😭
Your settings did now work correctly possibly as the driver forced default clocks. Notice the clocks in top right in Heaven - 1392Mhz core / 3504 memory are default speeds. +500 on the memory should be 4000 and core with boost at +100 should be ~ 1500Mhz
+guest21984 no the default clock on the 980ti is 1000 mhz or 1100 mhz
+guest21984 Only trust Afterburner. usually unigine benchmarks never read the correct speeds.
Hey. At the top of my "Hardware monitor" I have Power % - GPU Temperrature - GPU Usage % - Fan Speed %....
The "Power %" Max goes to 88? Why is this? thanks!
+ErdrickVIDEOS Bump. Mine doesn't go above 50% and I also don't have a "Power Limit" slider
+ErdrickVIDEOS I would also like the answer to this question. My power limit is set to 120% yet it still doesn't break the mid 80's
+Mychael Hunt
Hi, maybe it's a late answer but I had the same problem , the Power Limit slider not showing....First, you need to know that it is only accessible on GTX 600 or above, Second all you have to do is to chose a Default Afterburner skin in the Settings (in my case it worked with the "Default MSI Afterburner v3 skin". Hope it will help.
+ErdrickVIDEOS hmm mine goes to 139. I have a GTX 980ti G1 by Gigabyte which was rated as the best performing 980ti so maybe thats it.
thanks man!
I realy pushed clock speed and memory to the max and its running great..wtf
Ty, reached 1454 core and 4059 mem clocks stable. No voltage increase.
thank you
i tried this on my gameboy advance and it exploded and killed my cat :(
Rip
Hey Guys, i bought a MSI GTX 980ti Gaming 6G yesterday but iam worried about the Temps... The Card gets 84 Degrees in Witcher 3 with automatic Fan Curve at 87%. Is the cooler Bad? Or anyone here got some Ideas to cool the Card down without change the Original MSI Cooler???
this may be too late, but you shpuld try undervolting.
Is this on Windows 10? I have Windows 7. Does it matter?
Why would someone overclock if your eyes can only follow 60FPS anyway? I'm trying to understand Overclocking. :)
Just got my 980 Ti Gaming G1... did some overclocking 135+ on the core and 350+ on the mem with 110 power limit... my results were
FPS:101.6
Score: 2560
Min: 33.6
Max:214.8
Are these good results? haven't trying pushing even more.. but i feel satisfied. Fan was on Auto Temp never got over 74 after keeping it running for around 30 minutes.
+Aladdad1
Those are nearly identical to my results without pushing it very far. So that's good news. I kept auto temp on as well, never went over 45c with water cooling. Personally I'm just looking for a small boost for those crazy moments in Black Desert... I want to be prepared for release!
Yea I have very good luck with 210 core and 300 on MEM power not touched
First we need the card .. its out of stock everwhere !
If you live in UK then I'll give you heads up. Deliveries will be tomorrow 3 June, then 8th and 12-13th most likely. Different shops tho.
Newegg
Bro my gtx 980ti with ryzen 7 1700 i only get about 30fps in heaven like wtf??
i GOT THE 980TI ref, I'll sell it for cheap. never overclocked
Hmm How come my Msi Gtx 980 ti Gaming 6g Card got a base clock of 1139 and i can't oc more the 125+. :,( Mem base = 3505 and max Oc Is 300+?? Any on? I don't get why you all can get pass 1300+ in core Clock
+MynameisXXXXXX Do you read in GPU-Z or while benchmarking in MSI afterburner?
I gain +126MHz while benching compare to the Boost Clock in GPU-Z.
If you hit 1400MHz in afterburner while benching it's not bad.
What is your ASIC quality? Right click on the GPU-Z window then "Read ASIC quality". 65% is average higher is better.
GTX 980TI G1 Gaming:
Core Voltage: +0
Power Limit: 139%
Core Clock: +150 (1492Mhz)
Memory Clock: +500 (4001Mhz)
Temps: Valley (2560x1440 2xMSAA) 80c, GTA V (2560x1440 Max Sett no AA no Adv Sett) 76c
At +170 Core Clock it crashes in GTA V and it shows some artifacting in Valley, +160 it did manage but i lowered it just in case.
Is it normal for the backplate on 980ti to be very hot when running games/benchmarks even when the card is not OC-ed?
+Gligor Vlad I just got one, the evga 980ti ftw . It runs super hot. I wonder if I should take that backplate out.....
+Mig TheFig i have a topic opened on toms hardware and best options so far is to RMA it...i would advise contacting the customer support perhaps we are missing something.
+Low-Q Ok thanks Ill look it up. If I crank the fans high enough it runs descent but compare to MSI . Oh man, these card are noisy and hot.
+Gligor Vlad Ive had 4 980 ti's and all of their backplates get so hot almost burning my fingers when I rest them on there.
+Elite Exposure i have found a solution for this and will be updating tom's hardware topic tomorrow hopefully, but unfortunately it works only on on systems with 1 card in it :p
Good video 980ti is still a good card
This guy may be liquid cooling, unsure. But the fact he can get +500 is insane. Your luck of obtaining a good GPU chip that can go that high is so rare.. Year after year upgrading I have never received a video card that can hit those highs.
guys, please comment to my overclock. i7 4790k @4ghz, gtx 980 ti boost up to 1592 mhz from base clock of 1354 mhz. gpu
temp. consistent up to 80 degrees Celsius max. Pretty much same setting with this video except that I have my core clock to +200. Any thoughts?
is it 80 degrees or is it Celsius 80? if its the latter, your in a heap of trouble
Or you could make a custom bios and get A LOT more out of it
my power limit is not set to go to 110 105 how can i make it higher
Yes forums.evga.com/GTX-980-TI-BIOSVOLTAGE-HACK-m2360712.aspx www.overclock.net/t/1573308/nvidia-gtx-900-cards-custom-bios-upon-request
Trying this shit right now on this card (MSI, cleaned and with Liquid metal instead of the old paste). Let's see how it goes.
Did it go well?🙂
@@theivadim It went well. 100/500. Like you I think? Made big difference actually. Couldn’t get it higher and overvolting made no difference. Well, had a game crash today but srsly not sure if that was the CPU or the GPU, just set up PBO2 on my 5800X. Lol. But I will look into it if it keeps happening.
thanks a lottt
so evertime i turn on pc, i have to go msi after burner swell?
+completeGamer007 yes, never apply OC on start up
+completeGamer007 Only apply OC on start up IF you know that profile is COMPLETELY stable!
I used this for overclocking my 970M (my laptop is better than my i5-750 GTX 680 =/), will be getting a 980ti soon though :D
if I have a 980 ti OC,can I overclock it?
+valentino masetti yes, the OC you see is just a factory overclock deemed stable enough for consumers, it can still be pushed more or dialed back
So I am back now, I bought 2 980ti's and watercool them together with my 5820k. I got +280 on core and +460 on mem so the boost is around 1500something mhz. On my 4k Screen i get like 38-45 fps in Witcher 3 on everything maxed out.. sometimes i think maybe because both cards dont get full 16x pcie lanes the fps are that bad in witcher 3.. i am a little sad about it because i thought oh hey sure these cards will do witcher 3 in 4k 60fps easy.. ._. also my 5820k draws 140w when clocked on 4ghz with 1.1V on core but i get reeeeaaaly bad temps.. like 65-70°C under WATER! i used gelid extreme and the supremacy evo block with the right jetplate and insertation, so should be better i think, i expected like 50°C max under load but 4.5ghz maybe.. on 4.5ghz 1.25-1.3V on core i get insta crashed when i start prime, temps go up to 100°C+ in a matter of 5 seconds :/
Paddydapro you should not use prime on k series cpu's it runs them way hotter then they should be. use a different stress test program.
0 mention on power limit.
For anyone wondering what a good oc is (I have a Palit Jetstream GTX 980 Ti, 64% Asic quality)
My max stable Oc: (Without voltage tweaks.)
Voltage +0
Power limit: 110%
Core clock +100 (~1380 Mhz)
Vram +380
6102 score in superposition optimized 4k
Power constumpiton: 275W max.
78 °C in Superposition
However i find this undervolt setup much more efficient in day to day use:
Voltage +0
Power limit: 85%
Core clock +35 (~1208 Mhz)
Vram +550
5360 score in superposition optimized 4k
Power constumpiton: 215W max.
65 °C in Superposition
(i have a badly ventilated Fractal Define C case with silent Arctic P12 fans at 730 rpm. I have deshrouded the GPU.)
I use the latter, undervolted profile.
In games with higher CPU usage: 50-60w, I get max 75°C on the GPU after hours of WoT with my pc being unhearable from 2m distance. 65°C with side panel removed.
And the undervolted GPU is still around at 95% of the factory performance (1241) at 1208 mhz.
Voltage is locked in my msi afterburner, unlocking it in msi afterburner doesn't work either.
Søren Jensen did you update to 4.1.1? It is locked on 4.1.0 MSI Afterburner
I cant even get my 980ti evga card overclock above 100 on the core bruh
Yo, all I did was increase my power and now my gpu is at 91 C
I am not able to change the voltage O.o
In settings....click "unlock voltage control"
У тебя уже 980ти есть??? Ну теперь ты точно giveaway сделаешь :D
Конечно. Мне же титаны теперь не нужны больше:)
RGOC Perceptive!
MSI GTX 980 TI stock version
+800 on the memory
+300 on the core
Is that a stock 980 Ti? I have a 980 Ti Hybrid and I get artifacts at core +175... How you get +280 is beyond me.
+gamhacked Don't look after +XXX!!! Look only at the frequency while bench. We can see his card stock hit 1190Mhz Core clock while benching. My Evga hit 1316MHz stock in bench. So to compare, if I want to be like him I only need:
280 - 126 = 154. So +154Mhz
I have hit +160Mhz very stable without Voltage so yeah, it's the same.
1476Mhz in game is fine for me.
Conclusion: don't look +XXX thing.
i cant change core voltage
You should go to settings. Unlock it.
i got mine to 1442 core clock and 4000 Memory clock but still get real bad frame drops in fallout 4 xD
While overclocking mine I got memory clock to 2000.7 mhz where it was stable but anything over 1500 MHz for core clock (rather adjusting core clock and/or core voltage) drivers would crash and frames would drop significantly and my core clock would lock at 500 MHz and memory clock at 1300 MHz until I manually reset drivers or reset pc. Simply put I believe my personal card just doesn't like anything over 1500 MHz rather I give it more juice or just more clock so you may need to turn it down. Also use gpu-z to monitor your overclocks next to MSI AB I find it easier. One thing I did notice even though I had core clock set at 1490 MHz I got a driver crash due to it spiking up to 1508 MHz so I had to give it a 20 MHz cushion and set it at 1480 MHz sometimes jumping up to 1495 MHz.
theres a fix for F4, Fallout 4 Configuration Tool - By Bilago . download it and give it a try
Unigine took like 20 min to download with 180 down..... wat?
+ZonicAir Yeah, same here. There servers must be slow AF.
+TheDudeofDudes get a torrent from somewhere, mine finished in 3min
yea i got like 230 down and this shit took like 15 mins UGH
There is a fire inside my computer guys is this normal
Yeah sounds pretty normal. I had this once xD
+125 core, +570 memory
1500mhz core , 2038 mhz memory
with a custom bios. :)
I overclock my kingpin 980ti to 1588mHZ and
Thanks for the video, seems my 980ti hof cannot handle more than +80mhz for the core clock, what a shame....
+thibaut noah How I have the G1 which is a bit better than others but I can get 150 and haven't seen it lag. Of course now I want a 1080 lol. Its a balance with power consumption and voltage try increasing those
You're lucky.
I'm waiting for the watercool version of the 1080, suppose to come oc a 2300mhz :D
+thibaut noah Which company? Evga? An overclock like that would be insane lol.
Basic nvidia founders i think?
The oc coef is already huge on basic models so...
But i want to see the 1080ti first anyway, might be glorious
+thibaut noah Yea i recently purchased a 980ti hybrid so I'm going to wait for a 1080ti before I upgrade my gpu. I'll probably make my brother a nice pc with this 980ti.
