    Mark, yet another gem for all of us. One question ...... Actually it looks like 2 questions ....... Do you recommend having ALL boxes checked in the snapping options menu all the time? Are there advantages/disadvantages to doing so?

    • @MarkLindsayCNC
      @MarkLindsayCNC  5 лет назад

      Thanks, Steve! You can check or uncheck the boxes in Snap Options as you see fit. I turned them all on for this video so they would be available to demonstrate, and then I only scratched the surface of their capabilities. There are times when Smart Snapping, Angle Snapping, or Geometry Snapping get in the way, and you need to turn them off to do what you want to do. That's one of the reasons for the On/Off icons up at the top. Generally speaking, however, I leave them all checked, with the exception of Snap to Grid. If I need that, I go into Snap Options and set the grid I want to use, then turn it on.

    You know, Mike, I have watched many of your videos more than once so I can absorb all of your instructions. They are very well done. However, I recently clicked on a video that was referencing instructions that indicated it would be for someone with very little experience in using VCarve or Aspire, as the title stated for the "absolute beginner". With all the changes being made on the new updates, some of the information is applicable to the old guy as well. This video here was very informative and I hadn't seen it before. I have been doing work in Aspire with modeling so I'm a little deeper into it than the beginner, but it was very useful. Please trick us older guy and gals into stepping outside the box by stating this might be something you could use as it is an enhancement to what you are currently used to. Thank you for your great work. I really get a lot out of your efforts. Please keep it up if you've a mind to.,

      Thank you, Jerry. I do appreciate your kind words. I started the Absolute Beginner series in the summer of 2018, and at first it was just the basics - interface navigation, basic vector creation, the different toolpaths, etc... After about 10 videos, it started moving away from the basics, and has gotten more advanced as time passed. I've been toying with ending the Absolute Beginner series for about 9 months now, but just haven't done it yet. (Lazy or just rolling with it? You be the judge.) Either way, the next couple of videos are going back to the basics, so we'll see how things go with titling. I did drop the Absolute Beginner title in the thumbnail pics, however.

    Mark Thanks for this video, I now know more about drawing and snapping
    I followed your example of the rectangle and then stopping and using the tab button to finish closing the line. and then I did the stop short and add a like to to connect to points, checked for open vectors then closed the one that was open. that was all good .But then I used the pollyline to draw a line from the bottom right corner to the top left corner. checked for open vector and there was one but I could not get it closed. tried to select things and none of that allowed the connect button work. So what might I be doing wrong. I have had trouble closing vectors before.
    thanks Jeff

    • @MarkLindsayCNC
      @MarkLindsayCNC  5 лет назад

      Thank you for checking it out, Jeff! You can't connect either the start point or end point to any other point and have the vector close. You can only close a vector by connecting the start point to the end point. That can be done with either a line, a curve, an arc, or a part of another piece of geometry. I hope that helps!

    Is there a way to measure a line? For example in google skechup there is a tape measure tool. Is there something like that in vcarve? Or can you only find the end points and figure out the length yourself? Thanks

    Mark, Thank you for your videos, very informative. Question, with Geometry Snapping, you were drawing a line at the same height as a corner of your square. How can you specify how far from that point on the square that you want to begin your line. In your demonstration you just said we would go to about here and then start drawing.

    Hi Mark ....................... @ 7:00 where you place your start point ( negative 3 ), surely that 'negative' is dictated by your 'Point Of Origin'. I assume yours is in the centre of your work piece.
    What if your origin point was the bottom left hand corner? All your measurements would then become 'positive' then.
    Can you still do this if all your measurements have to come from that bottom left hand corner?
    Thanks

    • @MarkLindsayCNC
      @MarkLindsayCNC  3 года назад

      You're exactly right. The reason for that negative number was the fact that my origin is in the center of the piece of material. I did that to reinforce the negative and positive moves in the Cartesian Coordinate System. I was getting a lot of questions about that at the time I recorded this video. If you set your origin (X Y Datum Position in the Job Setup) to Bottom Left corner, all of the measurements will be positive from that point, because all of the positions on the material will be to the right of X zero and above Y zero.

      @@MarkLindsayCNC As always Mark, you're so prompt in replying to comments and or questions and always precise in your answers. Very much appreciated my friend.
      That information ( confirmation of sorts ) is invaluable to me, as I was a bit stuck on my project, I have no alternative than to use the bottom left hand corner of my material, it's not actually a 'material' like a flat piece of wood ................ it's an existing part that I need to pocket the top of.
      Thanks again Mark ; )

      Smart Snapping was introduced in Version 9.0, so if you have 9.0 or later, you have those snap functions. If you have version 8.5 or earlier, it is not available to you. If you do have Smart Snapping available to you, I showed how to turn it on and off in the first 3 minutes of this video, just before I started drawing polylines.

      Don't try to use a v-carve toolpath. Use a Profile toolpath, with a cut depth of around 1/16 of an inch, select the v-bit of your choice, machining ON the vector. Preview that to see if you like it. If you think it needs to cut deeper or shallower, change the cut depth, recalculate, and preview. I hope that helps!

      It's going to make one engraved figure into wood. Its 2 letters combined into 1 figure. A, little b and capital D (missing part of its verticle part.). Then fill the engraving with black epoxy. An inlayed, or engraved insignia in a pool cue.
