This is the 11th in a series of videos geared toward the person who has never worked with CAD or CAM in the Vectric Software before.
In this video, we’ll step step back in time and go over using layers to create closed vectors in the Vectric software.
If you’ve already watched my earlier video on the subject, this is an updated, more detailed demonstration of the subject. In the older video, I was using VCarve Pro version 8, and a lot of things have changed since then. When you said it can get confusing, you've never been more right! I had to quit for the night as I was going bonkers trying to figure out what to delete and what to keep on the second part of trimming. The first part was easy...
I'm with you, Terry. It can get real confusing, real fast. Sometimes you have to back away, take a break, and come back with "new eyes." It does get easier, but I still have to shake it off every now and then, and go do something else for a while - and I've been at this for 5 years.
Your videos are fantastic for us newbies. Even though I have been a part time cabinet and furniture maker for over 50 years, the learning curve on a cnc rounter machine and software is daunting and hard for us seniors to learn. But learning I am indeed doing. With part 11 I paused many times to try on my V-carve Pro. I also had to go back several times to watch you perform a certain task over and over until I could replicate what you had done.
Again, thank you for a fantastic job with these tutorials. I would be lost without them.
These videos have been a great learning aide to me. I'm very proficient with computers/some wood working - but CNC and CAD/CAM, etc is all very new to me. I feel like a sponge absorbing everything while I wait for my Onefinity to get here. Thanks for breaking everything down. As much as i'd love to jump into 3d images with splits - Understanding these basics has been very rewarding. Learning to crawl before running. Messing about on my own, while fun - Doesn't teach you like these videos do. Thank you!
Mark, I agree it was confusing. I paused and replayed the video several times but finally got it. Great job and thanks for providing a file to follow along.
I was thinking, to be more economical with the painting time, you could paint the blank white first. Apply plastic mask to the blank. Do the v-carving. Paint the black into the v-carved areas then, remove the mask and touch up any areas where bleed through occurred.
Just finished number 11, the 14th video in this playlist... AWESOME from video 1 all the way through. I've had Vcarve for 2 weeks and am doing my best to be a sponge!!! THANKS MARK - GREAT JOB!!! I look forward to watching the V carve series. Best regards

This is another very timely video for me, Mark. Do you have a hidden camera in my shop somewhere? It's that secret RUclips algorithm everyone keeps going on about, Jim. It has to be. You sent out those mental vibrations overnight, and my tinfoil hat must have slipped while I was sleeping, forcing me to get up and make the video in my sleep.

I think you could have saved some time. On layer 1, you are ultimately only using the text - so you could have had just the text on layer 1, and then the tornado and text on layer 2 and trim just as you did for layer 2 in the video. Great video - in fact great series. Thanks!
True. Always lots of ways to skin a cat. My point in this video was to introduce working with layers. A lot of what I did in this video is a lot easier in the newer versions of VCarve and Aspire, but your point remains a good one. Thanks!
Why wouldn’t you remove all of the tornado vectors on the one layer where you deleted some of them? Why not just delete them since you don’t use them for carving?
The intent was to show you how to use layers to join vectors without destroying/damaging/deleting the original vectors.
Mark, I'm using version 11.555 and in the video when I create the Layer 2 as you show and then view it at the 16:00 point, both the text and the tornado show pink, unlike when you do it the text is black. Is this something new with the version I'm using?
If you have the vectors selected, they'll be pink. If you click off to the side, away from any vectors, they should be whatever color you have that layer set to. If not, you can change the layer's color. Click the Layer Manager and click the rectangle next to the light bulb for that layer. From there, you can choose the color.
Hi Mark, I almost made it through the whole project except when I carve the profile toolpath for the text, the first 2 in the 2023, the top of the 2 is not raised. Where did I go wrong and how can I fix it. I did the select all open vectors and I got the message that there are no open vectors in drawing, so I thought I was good.
Go back and check your vectors to make sure they're joined. Remember that you need closed vectors for this to work. Grouping vectors is not the same as Joining vectors. If you have your text grouped, ungroup it and check for open vectors. The software will NOT check for open vectors that are grouped. It'll tell you that there are no open vectors in the design, even if there ARE open vectors in a group.

I am confused that you trimmed inside the number 8.

I had to go back and look at the video to refresh my memory. Trimming inside the number 8 was not a mistake. However, I did make a mistake with the number 8 - I forgot to delete the top inside circle on Layer 2, as I mentioned at about the 29:25 point in the video. If you look at the result, after I Previewed the toolpaths, there shouldn't be the black recess in the top circle. It should be the color of the material. That WAS a careless mistake.
Hi mark, can you make a video on the gadgets for vectric?
I tried using the keyhole gadget and it didn’t work for me, and by that I mean I plunged a hole and picked up the bit at the end of my vector and cut through my material leaving a dado.
I can make keyholes on my Cnc other way, by making a rectangle .001 and open the rectangle one end and start one end and move back .001.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
To be honest, I don't use the keyhole gadget either. I use the open rectangle method like you do. I guess I could do a video on it, but it'll be down the road a bit, as I need to get up to speed on it myself. Thank you for watching!
Personally, I find it easier to just do the keyholes on my router table...
