Rere, so glad you’re exploring these classics, Patsy Cline’s “Walking After Midnight” 1957 and “I Fall To Pieces” 1961 are two other songs to react to.
The headband she wears in the video was to cover an injury that she received in the car wreck a couple of weeks before the performance. She died in a plane crash at 31 years old.
This song was written by a man... goes by the name Willie Nelson. He has had an amazing career as a performer and songwriter himself... started in 1956, and he's still playing 👍 😎
Patsy Cline set a standard for singers that country have never been able to meet. She died just as the British Invasion was taking hold of America and the World. Every woman in country music owes a debt of gratitude to her for the gracious, powerful way that she interpreted and delivered a song. SHE'S GOT YOU, I FALL TO PIECES, WALKING AFTER MIDNIGHT, and SO WRONG are great songs on her catalog. Listen to them all. Keep going and enjoy the music.
Her broken ribs were sustained before the original studio recording of the song. This performance happened later. The delicate piano fills were by legendary session musician Floyd Cramer, who influenced generations of pianists with his "slip note" style. He later became a solo artist in his own right.
Yes, although the audio you hear in this version is actually the original studio recording of the song synced to a later live performance. Last I looked, you could dig around a bit on RUclips and find this video with the original audio. Being from a TV show, the original audio isn't as high quality as the studio recording for the single release that we heard here, but it's not terrible. The headband is something she started doing after her car accident to hide a scar on her forehead.
Patsy was a talented singer who was married to a songwriter who was also her manager. Willie Nelson wrote most of this song, but Patsy's husband did a lot to help with it. Patsy didn't like Willie or his music, but her hubby persuaded her to record it. He was right! This song cuts right into love and relationships and CRAZY. I think that this is a GREAT song, and Patsy was the perfect artist to sing it, God rest her soul. She was a torch singer in a time when that was almost obsolete.
Patsy Cline. One of the greatest female vocalists ever. Another one you would enjoy would be LeAnne Rhimes - Blue. Originally written for Patsy Cline, but she died in a plane crash before being able to record it. It then sat in the writer's filing cabinet for over 30 years because he didn't think anyone but Patsy could do it justice... until LeAnne came along. She recorded it at the tender age of 13 and it went straight to the top. Of course this was in the 90s so she's not a teen now, but the video shot for it was when she was only 14. There's a subtle homage to Patsy in that LeAnne and everyone are dressed in early 1960s attire and all vehicles are from the period so it's somewhat what Patsy might have looked like singing it had she lived
Ms. Cline is known as a Country Western singer, but you are right about the production having elements of jazz in it. That song could be sung by any singer with talent and strong heart-felt feelings , I believe ; and I absolutely love her voice and presentation...
Good old-fashioned countrypolitan. Great! "Walking after Midnight" has some bluesiness in it, not typical with country songs of the era. Perhaps try that one next.
The hayseed Judy Garland. That’s what they called her, and that’s what she was. They both had the gift of reaching right down into your soul and pulling it all out for everyone to see.
Patsy Cline had a very bad car wreck were someone t- boned her side of the car, and almost killed her. That's the reason she had broken ribs and the band on her head. She died in a plane crash years later. Next try her song Sweet Dreams.
She hit it big with this song after many years of performing and died in a plane crash in 1963 at the age of 30.....Jazz albums I recommend Dave Brubeck Time Out / Miles Davis Blue / John Coltrane Blue Train
Leavin On Your Mind is another great Patsy Cline classic. Not only was she the greatest Country singer, imo she is one of the greatest ever in any genre
You might also also take note of LeAnn Rimes. She is a young singer who, in the 1990's shot to fame on the v strength of her single BLUE. Her voice at that time was very reminiscent of Patsy Cline. She was raised on her music, the uncanny resemblance in the two voices. I don't have any jazz for you, but I do have Etta James. And I promise you will absolutely live her recordings. Here are a few to get you started. ALL I COULD DO IS CRY, SPOONFUL, SUNDAY KIND OF LOVE, and of course, her signature song AT LAST. Keep going
This is such a great song. Her voice is amazing! Okay, since you mentioned jazz... as you no doubt know, there are several different styles of jazz, but, I would strongly recommend you checking out the Pat Metheny Group, the song First Circle for starters. I think it'll blow your mind. Greetings from California.
When I was still working back in the 90s (which was 30 years later), I listened to Patsy Cline recordings and this song in particular a lot when I was working. She had an awesome voice. As for jazz, Thelonious Monk was in a jazz genre all his own. I love his style.
🎼🎀🎀🎀🎼 .. you are finding some real gems , ReRe. This is such a famous song , and if you dig a little deeper you will see that is was written by a young Willie Nelson. I hope you discover Willie's music also. Willie is a Country Music legend and has a long list of songs. Willie has some rocking songs but some of his softer ones are "Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain" and "Stardust". Enjoy ... keep the great songs coming. 👏👏👏👏👏🇺🇲
In1961 country music was relegated to little bitty radio stations with pudgy guys in overalls, harmonicas, and washboards. Willie Nelson later worked out of a bunch of personal problems to turn it into an art form, as well as Johnny Cash, Glenn Campbell, and many more . Top 40 radio in those days was diverse and we were lucky enough to this get this music, rock, R&B, soul, and a whole bunch more on transistor radios that cost about 5 bucks. Patsy, Willie, and a whole bunch more fit this into the American mosaic of popular music. It's got a little of everyone's joy and regrets.
Hi Rere, you want jazz you want blues, you want soul? Billie Holiday singing Fine and Mellow. It’s a live version taped on a CBS special in 1958. It’s a classic you shouldn’t miss.
There's Patsy then there's everyone else. She could sing the phone book and make heartfelt. You mentioned the broken ribs - - she had been in a bad car wreck -- that head band is covering where her scalp was still healing
In response to you asking for jazz requests, I’d suggest anything by Sting. Here are a couple I have in mind: -English Man in New York -It’s Probably Me -Fortress Around Your Heart I think you would love them.
One of the greatest country singers ever. If you want to do a Jazz singer you might try listening to Angelina Jordan she is 18 years old and started singing jazz at about 6 or 7.
Great reaction, Rere! Patsy had such an amazing voice. Another fantastic talent gone way before her time. You may want to check out Post Modern Jukebox for some jazz. They take modern songs and rearrange the music to a 1940s or 1950s style. They have lots of jazz in their catalog.
Part II 😁 OH YA!! Listening to your outro,, you will LOVE the Carpenters, THIS MASQUERADE 💕💖 George Benson is a Jazz guitar player/ singer and also a Jazzy slow rock tune by Bachman Turner Overdrive called; LOOKING OUT FOR NUMBER ONE! ☮️
Patsy Cline is one of a handful of great songs by top-tier female vocalists. "I Fall to Pieces" is definitely worth the time. In a somewhat different vein, you may like The Andrews Sisters--"Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy." And moving a bit further out, if you already haven't try Joni Mitchell's "Help Me." Appreciate your thoughtfulness!
Patsy had been in a car wreck and she hit the windshield so you can see some injuries to her forehead and that's why she's wearing heavy brow make-up and the headband. This recording had been delayed so long, she wanted to get it done so there she was. I believe it was 1963 when her plane crashed into a mountain. The music world suffered a great loss that day. The only modern singer that comes close to Patsy's vocal abilities is Leann Rimes. For a little jazz, listen to "Pick Up The Pieces" by the Average White Band. Another great song with undertones of jazz is Boz Scaggs doing "Lowdown". Carlos Santana had jazz elements later in his career as well. Great selection and reaction!
The hair ban is to cover a scare. Probably from the accident where she broke her ribs. Another great Patsy song is "She's got You". I like her version of "The Tennessee Waltz".
This song was written by Willie Nelson who is an icon in American country music. There is a movie from the late 70's called a Coal Miners Daughter. Patsy was a badass. She was feminine as hell clearly, but she could hang with the boys and was able to drink and swear with the best of em. She lent her experience to a number of young country women before her death-most notably Loretta Lynn-and they revered her for it. This is like having a trucker do opera, in that sense-the beauty is a little stunning.
In fact checking, (I got it right!) I discovered she was a pioneer in demanding up front payment for shows. Promoters were used to scamming female artists but she wouldn’t let them go anywhere until they ponied up the dough. She even coined the phrase “no dough, no show” for the purpose lol.

With jazz, you should start with Louis Armstrong. Also, instrumentalists such as Bix Biederbecke and Sidney Bechet, and Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli. There also big bands led by Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, and Glenn Miller. When it comes to female vocalists, I would start with Ella Fitzgerald, although you can’t go wrong with Sarah Vaughn or Billie Holiday. Frank Sinatra would be most people’s choice for the top male vocalist, followed by people like Tony Bennett. I’m sure that other commenters will come up with a dozen more who were top musicians.
she is the first woman on the Mt Rushmore of country music FULL STOP. i could also argue shed be on Mt Rushmore overall. Hank Sr, Patsy, Loretta Lynn and Johnny Cash would be my 4. since three of them more or less overlapped each other.
The record has been put over the real soundtrack of this film clip, but in this case the record is better so you know how she really sounded. She had been in an auto accident, that's why the broken ribs and she had a gash on her forehead which is why she's wearing a bandanna here.
Written by the great Willie Nelson.
WOW
Willie has written a good many songs.
And hes still alive and singing in his near 90s
we all know that cuz every time somebody sings this song the Willie Nelson trolls come out to say the same old stuff.

Patsy was one of those singers who could sing the dictionary and make it sound like a symphony.
lol great statement. She a hall of famer for sure
Her voice is one in a billion. To say is was one in a million would mean there are 300 people in America who can sing like her. There are not.
The harmonizing group are The Jordanaires. They performed on a lot of songs back in the 50’s and 60’s. Elvis used them a lot. Cheers
