One player not mentioned in this video is Josh Lowe, who was drafted 13th overall by the Rays. He’s been a bit of a slow developer but he was picked out of high school, so just turned 25 in February. He made the Rays top 10 prospect list in 2021 and 2022, had a cup of coffee in the bigs in September 2021, and made his full debut in 2022. He was solid for the first couple weeks of that year but ended up being demoted back to the minors twice after struggling with inconsistency (he did win another AAA championship with Durham, though). Now he’s made the Rays’ Opening Day roster and looks to have markedly improved with another strong start. Update: As of Memorial Day weekend, Josh is 2nd on the team in homers with 11, rocks a .970 OPS, and has an impressive 2.0 fWAR. Looking like an All-Star campaign for the young slugger.
@@nova1121fanz Yes they did. We've yet to see if that trade, netting the Rays Osleivis Basabe and Heriberto Hernandez as the major pieces, will pan out well.
Angels fan here, Moniak is still writing his story. Hes been great for us since we traded Marsh for him and even though his walk rate is low hes still managing to get on base a lot.
It’s crazy to me also how the pirate were able to trade mccutchen and actually get Reynolds’s who is actually a viable replacement talent wise. Never usually happens yk just wild they traded there aging franchise icon and we’re able to get a new young franchise icon who plays the same position. He had to fill some pretty big shoes after the cutch trade and it’s wild to me that he actually did. One of the best trades to me just because of how unlikely it is for a guy to come in a be able to do what he has done in Pit. Kids a stud!
He didn't "disappear immediately after." He had two good seasons and then after the series he was below average but not terrible. Getting optioned to triple a not long after. This guy has soooo much more in the tank. Whether that is with the braves or someone else (the braves have depth at SP) Anderson will be fine. I'd take him on the Royals any day if the week.
@@M.DT00 yeah but that crackdown started in the middle of 21. Why was he able to hold on well enough to help propel the team through their championship and then last year start declining?
@@adu3830 he was terrible in 2022. I watched just about every one of his starts in his career. I like that the hype of the MLB Draft is growing. It will never be what the NFL & NBA have but it's awesome if you're a die hard wanting to see how your team drafts.
I was at an Astros game last season where they hosted the Angels. Mickey Moniak was actually the lead off hitter, and he made a massive impression on me, hitting a triple in the first at-bat and scoring several runs. It was only later that I realized his status as a draft bust, and it genuinely surprised me. (If you want to see the game, it was on 9/11/22).
As a Phillies fan I watched him a bit. He has nice speed but looks out matched a lot at the plate. In 2022 he had an awesome spring training and was in line to be the opening day cf but broke his wrist. And then when he came back couldn't hit at all. Phillies traded for Marsh to go on a playoff run and made Moniak expendable.
Cubs fan here with a hot take: the Ian Stewart/DJ LeMahieu trade was a long term win for the Cubs. You talked about the previous 3B we had from Stewart in Aramis Ramírez, one of my all-time favorites. However, the trade with the Rockies had a huge impact on the Cubs being able to draft their 3B of the future in Kris Bryant. Because that trade made the 2012 Cubs worse and the 2012 Rockies better, the Cubs wound up with the 2nd overall pick in the 2013 draft, one pick right ahead of the Rockies, who took Jon Gray, a solid pitcher overall, but KB is arguably the 2nd best player from that draft after Aaron Judge. I choose to view the trade like this: The Cubs traded DJ LeMahieu, Tyler Colvin, and Jon Gray for Ian Stewart, Casey Weathers, and Kris Bryant.
I love seeing Dane Dunning here seeing that so far in 2023 he's been probably the best reliever in baseball. We aren't even in May yet and he has been INSANELY clutch for the Rangers.
the draft is hard. back when the draft occurred it wasnt easy to guess the future of these players. cant say any front office is better at scouting, really just got lucky that they got a certain guy they liked (almost every single team would have taken Senzel or Moniak if they got the first pick)

On another note, I went to school with Gavin Lux in kenosha and was on the varsity team with him too. He's a great all around guy and was a massive talent. Good hitter and amazing fielder and I'm so happy he got himself a ring not too long ago and that his batting average and ops are slowly but surely starting to go up. Sad to see him hurt tho.
5:42 "he's another guy that doesn't rank highly on his teams prospect list" *Well, I mean, he got cut after the 2022 season but you're not technically wrong...*
I played against Riley Pint at his peak in high school, he threw harder than anyone I had ever faced, but even back of the order batters didn't fear him because if issues with control. A pitcher can't succeed if a batter can beat them by simply not swinging.
Yaaa, agreed. It was more the way he said it lol, "...have NOT worked out." 😅 Manning is solid. Nothing spectacular but has had bright spots and is continuing to improve imo.
Even with many players being NFL ready, and more than 50 roster spots, NFL executives have problems getting a third of their draft picks to become starters are even contributors, so the MLB draft is really a game of blindfolded darts, despite the avalanche of mathematical quantifiers available on each player.
I still think there is something in Ian Anderson there’s no way u can show that much success and just vanish. He went to a school 25 mins from mine and watching him in High School was unbelievable
The only sport I find comparable to development time is hockey. I’m not sure what his current control is so I’m thinking AA will try to find a package with somebody willing to take a chance on him. (If the right package is there)
Bo was very open with teams that he didn’t want to change his swing and basically told them to not pick him if they didn’t like how he swung the bat. He almost didn’t sign with the blue jays basically them to come back with a better offer. First round talent 100% but he came with the * of “I’m not changing for anyone.” As a Blue Jays fan I hope he signs long term with us. I’ll live with his glove being below average for a shortstop in the game today to see him lead the league in hits.
I wish the best for Nick Senzel. He was my 1spot hitter in my 2020 The Show reds franchise "rebuild" , and he was hitting a very solid .311 avg, like 16 hr, 20 SB. He was fntastic for me lol. And he plays alot of positions, was able to use him in outfield, and then 2 months at 2nd or 3rd base b/c of injuries to a starter. He was a stud in that game 😂
Ian Anderson is exempt from this. Without question. He’s fallen off but with everything he did for the Braves, no one can say he wasn’t worth the draft pick.
Mickey Moniak. Man as a phille fan. We needed depth last year when harper went down he hit .063 with like 22 strikeouts. Kid is done unfortunately. Wish him nothing but good luck in LA.
Yeah it would be interesting to track not draft picks per round and whether they make it/pan out, but prospects who make MLB top 100 and how many of those guys make it. A Top 100 early on could be the top draft picks, but over time during development the top 100 is a collection of guy from years past and some who weren't in the first couple rounds.
as a reds fan who rarley missed a game in 2022 nick started to pan out towards the end of 22 coming up with big moments and getting on base more if he dont take a huge stride this year i fear will will move on to our other prospects
I don't understand how you can say Matt Manning hasn't worked out? Has he been spectacular? No. He's shown flashes and his ERA alone isn't horrible. Needs to stay healthy but he's very capable of being a solid pitcher in the big leagues and he's shown that.
2nd round guys get paid better usually. Agents get them signed to big market teams in the second instead of being a first rounder with a small market team
Just showing up to say Senzel has finally been able to stay healthy and is producing. Will Benson is also starting to look like he could become the best player of the 2016 first round draft.
Update will benson has come alive since his most recent call up to the reds with a whopping 0.8 WAR. But seriously though that walk off against the dodgers was electric
I only have one problem with this video, and that's the classification of Corbin Burnes. Corbin was not a top prospect, nor should he have been. If you remember, Corbin Burnes in his first 2-3 seasons was THE WORST pitcher in the NL, it wasn't until the Brewers pitching staff finally reshaped his fastball into a cutter that he was finally good. Had he gone to most other teams, I doubt he would have made that career saving change
Nick Senzel was a terrible reach by the Reds. Sure he was the “safest” at the time of the top 3 picks but the Reds outfield has been a mess for many years. Then they couldn’t keep Castellanos
Fairly certain Quantrill was drafted by the Padres, and traded to Cleveland for Naylor, Owen Miller, and Mike Clevinger. Also Dennis Eckersley is in the Hall of Fame so. He fan talk all the shit he wants as far as anyone in baseball is concerned.
Anderson is an interesting case because yes he’s shown he can win and be dominant in the most critical situations but at the same time it feels like he’s lost any control of the ball. Either resulting in a walk or a ball straight down the dick fir an easy hit. Hoping he works out but even if he doesn’t, he’s got a WS ring and a special role played in bringing a championship back to the A
This isn't negative. Not every player makes it in MLB. Not even 1st rounders. Sometimes 2nd, 3rd, 4th, & 5th rounders come around. There's a reason they're playing MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL. Just because they weren't 1st rounders doesn't mean they're gonna be garbage.
Ian Anderson is now getting Tommy John surgery. Perhaps the injury is why he was struggling. Who knows, some guys come back better after Tommy John, maybe he can return to form, remains to be seen of course.
To say Matt manning hasn’t worked out for the Tigers is a little unfair to Manning. Coming into 2023, he’s only made 30 career starts. He hasn’t been the best young pitcher but it isn’t like he’s terrible. Being a little harsh there Jolly lol
This is more of a too soon to say draft still. Matt Manning was decent for the Tigers last year and had a great start against the Astros the other day as their #4 starter, not really sure how you can say they “didn’t work out”.
Can’t really call Anderson a bust quite yet, hitters figured him out and he hasn’t figured out how to make the proper adjustments yet, give it two more years, if the trend continues, call it what it is
At 7:22 I was checking the screen for who the Royals grabbed expecting some flop, but didn't see them in the first round - 2016 oh yeah... they just won the WS in 15 so maybe they traded the first round pick for Volquez I don't remember. But I went and checked and the Royals in the second round took AJ Puckett; they couldn't get Puck and thought Puckett would be the same guy, or they got confused idk haha. Now at 10:18 this is particularly interesting because Yeah TOR took Bo, but it was one pick before KC could have had him. They wouldn't have taken him given Mondesi was the SS they expected, and if they did take Bo they probably don't take Bobby when they did (it's early but I'm not sure BWJ will be elite elite like the hype he got). 2016 did get KC Nicky Lopez. Yay...
Objectively funny to see Mickey Moniak's monster breakout since this video was posted. Happy to be wrong about him, dude is seriously talented.
We love him in Anaheim too
Glad to see someone come to the Angels and actually get better for once
Im not happy, the phils could use an outfielder
But he can't get a hit in a clutch spot
One thing to note if not mentioned. Corey Ray is now in the Cubs organization as a coach as of this past season

Tommy Edman was 6th round pick and has put up as much WAR as anyone in the draft.
Ian Anderson is now getting Tommy John surgery. Perhaps the injury is why he was struggling. Who knows, some guys come back better after Tommy John, maybe he can return to form, remains to be seen of course.
Corey Ray just recently retired from playing to.take a position as a collegiate coach. An all-time bust for the Brewers.
Do a video on what teams had the best drafts looking back
To say Matt manning hasn’t worked out for the Tigers is a little unfair to Manning.
Geez what happened to Ian? Maybe the yips? Thanks Jolly!
Corey Ray is a free agent now... the Brewers let him walk in minor league FA after last season
Why u gotta put like 14 clips of nimmo striking out
Mickey moniak is taking
Yay...
It's funny that the clip of Senzel striking out is an absolutely garbage strike 3 on the inside.
All I gotta say is, don't sleep on Josh Lowe this year
Corey Ray actually retired this offseason. Thank goodness for Burnes because this draft absolutely sucked otherwise for the Brewers
Seems like Anderson was a Spider Tack user 🤷 spin rates go down and now he's no good after they clamp down? Hmmm.
I really thought Senzel was going to take over for Votto as face of the Reds franchise…
Senzel is looking good this year
