What about Kyler Murray. 9th overall in 2018 by Oakland and the dude didn’t even play a minor league game. What a bust, I wonder what he’s up to these days
If you look at the history of the MLB draft, you'll see that star players can come at any time. Also, note that until Ken Griffey Jr., no top pick had ever been inducted into the HOF. Lastly, teams can get players from the international pool, so there's more competition for roster spots.
I remember back in the 90's hearing that the average minor league player's chance of playing even one mlb game was about 1 in 40. There were more minor league teams then, would be interesting to see what the odds are now.
Riley Pint's story sounds very similar to Tyler Matzek. It's even for the same team. The Rockies drafted Matzek in the firat round as one of the 22 players who was drafted ahead of Mike Trout. Matzek got "The Yips" with the Rockies and quit baseball. He ended up coming back to baseball in an unaffiliated league. His former manager Walt Weiss had become bench coach for the Atlanta Braves and convinced the Braves to take a flier on him. He ended up becoming one of the best left handed relief pitchers in the Braves bullpen and played a huge role in helping the Braves win the 2021 World Series. He played a big role again in 2022 but missed last season due to Tommy John surgery. Tyler Matzek is expected to come back for the start of next season and be ready to make a big contribution in what will be his first ever contract year as an MLB pitcher. He will surely want to prove himself prior to reaching free agency after the 2024 season.
Matzek was an Oregon signee who I was hoping would pitch for Oregon. Glad he found some success. Another Oregon signee who ended up in Atlanta who should've made this list is Alex Jackson who was picked sixth overall by the Mariners in 2014. He was a bust.
@@jirikurto3859 I remember Alex Jackson as well. He started out as a center fielder and then switched to catcher. I think Alex Jackson and Tyler Matzek may have actually played for the Atlanta Braves at the same time if I remember correctly. The Braves ended up trading Jackson to the Marlins when they were looking for catching after the JT Realmuto trade.
@@YeeHee-ds8vh They will never give up on Colorado because the fans are loyal. Unlike cities like Oakland, Miami, Tampa Bay (which is actually St. Petersburg) and many other cities... Rockies fans will show up to games in droves. They won't use the team losing as an excuse to not show up. They show up anyway. So MLB will never give that up and they shouldn't. They did make it to a World Series one year but they swept something like 17 games in a row to get there and MLB rules sucked out all their momentum by making them take 10 consecutive days off before the world series. It's definitely harder to win baseball games in Colorado but the people who live there know that and that's why they always show up. Honestly... Considering the circumstances I might be willing to say Rockies fans are the most loyal fans in MLB and there is a surprisingly large number of them. When cities like Oakland, Miami, and even 99-win Tampa Bay can't even buy fans during the playoffs you can't tell loyal fans they don't deserve a team.
I went to a conference with Omar Vizquel and he said the hardest thing is not to make it to the bigs, the hardest thing is to remain there and be successful.
Stories like Danny Hultzen are the tough ones. Looked awesome every time he stepped on the field, but just couldn't stay healthy. Feels more like terrible luck than a bad scouting job by the Mariners.
Great list, the other thing that Bubba such a bust was the $7.5 million bonus Scott Boras got him to sign him away from Nebraska football. At the time it was the second highest bonus ever after Strasburg (also a Boras guy).
Hi. There are some major busts in there for sure! I recognized some of those names there in the middle of the countdown. You have documented a collection of many broken dreams. Great vid!
Great list of busts. Surprised to not see Connor Scott, though it could be too early for him. Being a Marlins fan, I want to give extra context on Tyler Kolek. He was drafted for his easy triple digits fastball. When they settled him in a regular starting pitcher workload, his velocity inexplicably fell from triple digits to fringy 90-92. You'd think it was his lack of run prevention and Tommy John surgery that kept him from sniffing A+, but no. That's just the outcome of the real problem. The real problem was how wild he was. No, seriously, look at 2017-2019. After Tommy John in 2016, he had control problems that spiraled out of control. Look at the amount of BBs, HBPs, and WPs, and look at his innings pitched, and that will paint a clearer picture. He's always had control problems even before the Tommy John, but after Tommy John, he literally could not throw a baseball. It felt like every time he pitched he had no idea where the ball was going. It was quite sad to watch.
Thanks for including Hultzen, he was supposed to be the third head of Cerberus. Paxton and Walker were both good for a few years. Not enough Ms on your list lol. We've got so many busts to choose from! Ackley would have been too early I guess.
as a bag over the head M's fan for the last 30 years, Hultzen wasn't the worst. Jeff Clement, Ryan Anderson, Dustin Ackley etc. to name a few recent ones. The M's are the most cursed team in all of sports. And the curse continues as long as we have a team president who works 54% of the time, and a new cheap owner who is worse than the previous ones.
@@luigivincenz3843 you don't like that Dipoto came out and said he wants to create a sustainable winner for over a decade? And you think the Ms are cheap in a division with the As? Man, you are the reason Dipoto says he's "doing the fans a favor".
When I was deep into keeping up with these prospects I was at my local SAL team, Lexington Legends almost every week. Seeing all the big names come to town. The Legends were an Astros affiliate from 01-11 or 2012. In 12 or 13 they became a Royals affiliate and was excited to see some of the new roster. Well, Bubba Starling was on that roster. It should’ve been a sign. Most top 5-10 picks skip Low A ball all together. Even HS picks. He was okay. But you could tell he just didn’t have it, to go higher up. He had a rough injury history. Like a lot of players. Would’ve liked to seen him go to the majors and stay. He was a Team USA superstar.
Should do a type of busts list for the yearly signing of young IFAs -- but I guess tweaked for most amount of money spent on a player with zero returns.
If you add in Kyler Murray with Michael Choice and Austin Beck the A’s Moneyball brain trust has blown a lot of #1 draft picks just in the past few years. That along with trading away most of their good players explains why the A’s have lost over 200 games the past 2 seasons. Vegas can have them.
The A’s cheapskate owners Are the reason why they’ve lost over 200 games in the last two years. Those are the consequences of nuking the roster and tanking. They won four World Series and six pennants in their history. Their fans deserve an owner, who cares.
Fisher and his goons purposefully tanked so Oakland fans develop apathy and indifference when the A's move to Las Vegas. They wanted that potential market though the only thing Vegas seems to care about are the Golden Knights since they won the Stanley Cup. Raiders have done jack shit and, ironically, have their stadium raided by opposing fans. I would imagine the latter happening once the A's settle.
Truthfully outsoide of being that Bryce Harpe type of hyped player, most players aren't even known. Pitches move a bit quicker tbrough the minors while hitters can take 3-5 years after they are drafted if they are just a good prospect. Half these names most people won't even remember.
I always think that, if the Astros had successfully signed Aiken, would they still have become as big as today? Because if Aiken had signed, they would not have that 2nd overall compensation and bregman would likely ended up in another team
Danny Hultzen. Man, in 2012 I was in my third year of “prospecting” as a baseball card collector. Paid an embarrassing amount on his 2012 1st Bowman Chrome autograph.
He doesn't meet the criteria of being a top 10 pick in the draft, but Delvin Perez was a huge bust for the Cardinals. They invested a lot of money in him and he never panned out to be a big leaguer.
You know what these guys is drafted in the early 2010 that turned out to be busts I wonder what they're up to honestly. Are they like in a office working at a business office or do they like go back and finish their college degree. It's just interesting I can imagine them applying for a job and the boss is like oh my God you were drafted to 10th overall by the Oakland A's that's not helping you but still cool
I guessed the #1 spot. Cubs fans breath a sigh of relief when Astros chose Appel and they got Bryant. As for busts, yeah it happens a lot. But if you ask all these players if they had any regrets they would say No. The teams can have regrets signing them but a young man living his dream and gets signed for a couple million dollars to play minor league baseball, who would have regrets?
