So the first thing I thought of when I saw 2014 draft being bad was, at least a pretty good current Phillie, meaning their own pick, Nola, is good. And then to find 3 other current Phillies who are also decent players was a bonus.
The worst thing that could happen to a young pitcher, worst than a Tommy John, is to be drafted or traded to Colorado. Coors will welcome you to the big leagues
The most enduring image of Nick Gordon I have is him smacking the top of the Target Field dugout in celebration when Royce Lewis smashed a home run in the 2023 postseason. I don't know why that was the celebration he went with, but his brother includes "strange" in his name and doesn't believe that the moon is real. He's an international man of mystery, I guess.
There was a time when I lived in East Texas and I would often stop in Shepherd on my trips to Houston, since it's a nice and quaint little town. So I was pretty excited when Tyler Kolek was drafted second overall. It's a shame that Tyler's career never materialized, and the fact that Stephen was able to Majors this season may be one of life's greatest ironies. Anyways, fun video.
I would nominate Ubaldo Jiménez as the greatest starter in Rockies history. He had a 3.67 ERA , AT Coors (3.66 overall as a Rocky) compared to 5.07 for Marquez and 4.66 for Freeland.
Honestly, even without knowing that story, I find myself cheering for the guy if I see his name, just cuz it's hard to root against a guy named Connor Joe

If you watch football and have some knowledge about older draft classes, for me as a Philly fan, this Phil's class is so close to the year we drafted Lane Johnson. Both years had such a high amount of busts and yet both our teams drafted one of the very few top guys that panned out.
And it's also hilarious how out of the hits here, almost every has made their career in philly/become a key piece this year. Nola, Hoffman, Schwarbs, and Trea is such a big list of guys for us
I remember that year well. Chip Kelly had just got hired and their was that linebacker/ Defensive end from Oregon that everybody assumed Philly would draft, but Miami nabbed him the pick before. Yeah...... I'd say Lane worked out lol
I remember playing travel ball with Derek Hill up until we graduated HS…. The dude had wheels like nobody I’d ever seen before. Saw him hit a laser one time over the centerfielders head and with absolutely 0 errors he turned it into an inside the park home run. Dude was absolutely nasty in centerfield as well. It sucks he got plagued by injuries after the draft.
@@TheManny717 Favorite fun fact on this: the second no. 1 overall is one of those three, a guy the Mets selected over Reggie Jackson because Reggie had a white (actually Mexican) girlfriend.
Quick fact or whatever Bradley Zimmer was on the Rockies spring training team this year in 45 plate appearances his batting average was.378 and his on base was .430 He became expendable when they signed Jake cave. Justice for my goat Bradley Zimmer
Should be noted that current Tokyo Giants #2 starter Foster Griffin was a competetive balance pick in this draft as well. While he never panned out in MLB, considering he's currently sporting an 80 FIP- in NPB, there was always something there
@@AndThatsBaseball Also, Tyler Beede was the Tokyo Giants' Opening Day starter in 2023 because the WBC meant that ace Shosei Togo wasn't rested enough, and I may be wrong, but I think he ended up having the worst season of any opening day starter in their 90 year history. 119 RA-, 121 FIP-, only 0.1 WAR
Just an extremely small note -- in MAY of 2017, Chris Sale was the best pitcher in baseball, and Kluber had a 5.06 ERA (seriously). His second half that year was one of the craziest runs I've ever seen, and as a Red Sox fan, it caused me great pain.
Connor Joe and Jameson Taillon both having cancer and injuries derail their careers is so disappointing. Especially since in a different world you could see them being cornerstones for the Pirates for years if not for their health
It’s pretty incredible how the Astros drafted two of the biggest busts of all time with back to back #1 picks and still managed to win a World Series 3 years later
They also got Correa in 2012 then Bregman and Tucker in 2015, 3/5 first round picks being that good is nearly impossible. Just crazy that their misses were the biggest misses

Kopech is yet another example of how bad the White Sox ciaching staff is. He just won a Workd Series with the Dodgers. 4-0, 1.31 ERA, 24 innings, 29 Ks, ERA+ 348
Quick update on Grant Holmes because the feel-good story has continued. He served a very important role in shoring up an absolutely battered Braves rotation as a long reliever and emergency starter. He pitched 66 innings in half a season to a 3.56 ERA, 3.20 FIP. Crazy career bounceback. It seems very likely that he'll be a mainstay in the Braves long relief.
As good as Aaron Nola's WAR and accumulation is, he is not getting in the HOF without any hardware. He has only one all star appearance and Top 3 Cy Young finish.
Nola was unironically a victim of his team. Having the best catcher in baseball when catching is at an all time low, JT Realmuto was essentially a lock for the Phillies, pushing him out at least twice
@@DFCwastakenthis also includes this year with all the selections from the Phillies. He should have at least 3-4 by now excluding what should’ve been an all star appearance this year.

I have nothing against what Manfred did to the Home Run Derby, it’s just that we never got to see the 2014 Home Run Derby rules longer. :/ EDIT: Figured I’d bring the Derby up since it’s tomorrow.
Luke Weaver's become a go-to in the bullpen for this (now) World Series Yankees team, so he definitely seems to have found his calling. I guess I should add that Flaherty is pitching for the Dodgers going into the World Series also, so that's something.
As a Yankees fan, it's nice to see how solid (outside of that one outing) Weaver has been in the post-season, and Flaherty is scheduled to start Game 1 for the Dodgers despite being lit up in his last outing against the Mets, so we'll be seeing both of them very soon in this 2024 World Series.
I got to see Tyler Kolek pitch on several occasions during his final pro season (2019) in Clinton, Iowa. He always pitched like he was afraid of getting hurt again, and never seemed to be able to find the zone. Such a shame; he seemed like such a gracious guy.
Everything I read said he was an incredibly hard worker and good dude. The size, the character, and the velo were all there. That's why scouting in this sport is so difficult.
i think aaron nola has to fight an uphill battle to even have a shot at cooperstown since he doesn’t have the accolades shame because he’s such a great pitcher
Thanks for recognizing how talented Nola really is. It’s a shame he’s so criminally underrated and he totally deserved to be an all star this year. Philly needs to give him more love to say the least. If he did then he’d have more than just one all star selection. Regardless I think the odds are in his favor to make it to Cooperstown as of right now. Accolades should play a smaller part than they do when it comes to that stuff.
