Star Wars The Empire Strikes Back (1980) film analysis! Why do Star Wars diehards consider The Empire Strikes Back to be the best Star Wars film, and what production secrets give Empire layers upon layers of hidden meaning? In this special #Wookieeleaks Star Wars rewatch series, Erik Voss turns to the darker second installment, in which Darth Vader reveals himself as Luke's father, Yoda reveals himself as more than an annoying jerk, and Boba Fett still comes off as a badass. How did director Irvin Kershner change the character dynamics among Han Solo, Leia, and Luke Skywalker to give the Star Wars franchise the emotional gravity to last decades? What subtle camerawork elevates the terror of Darth Vader? What is the real-world philosophical origin of Yoda's wisdom? And how does the Wampa of Hoth foreshadow the entire plot of the film?

Drives me crazy when people comment on Peter calling it the 'snow planet' and the 'walking thingys' apparently assuming this means HE doesn't know the real names. Favorite part about Luke & Vader's duel is something I only noticed 20 years after my first time watching it: Vader is mostly toying with and testing Luke's abilities--but near the end, Luke is able to hit Vader in the shoulder. Vader winces, gets really annoyed (probably thinking "you little sh*t! now you're gonna get it!"), and really starts to unload on his son. For some reason, it reminds me of a parent trying to give a troublesome toddler a bath. LOL

I've got a good detail I think you guys missed.
Like you mentioned, Vader kills every one of his lieutenants that fails him. Captain Needa, the first Admiral, etc. Well when Admiral Piett loses the Falcon at the end of the film, Vader is too distraught, emotional, or whatever you feel like he is to care about anything else. Piett seems to expect to be killed, but Vader just passes by him. It's something I never caught until pointed out to me, and I really like it.
On an unrelated note, the symphony in my city recently did a screening of Empire with a live orchestral score, and WOW. This particular film has one of the greatest film scores in all of cinema. Hearing it live really put that in perspective for me.

18:43 The person holding the unfinished Fett helmet is Joe Johnston, not Jeremy Bulloch. Also, the line Lucas wrote for Ford before Han gets frozen was "I love you too". Not liking the line, Kershner had Ford improvise on the spot as the cameras were shooting. Ford thought Han was too macho to open up with his feelings, so he simply said "I know" and Kershner loved it.

So here 13:18 is where the mythology breaks down, especially after you include the prequels.
Here it seems Yoda WANTS Luke to be afraid. And yet Fear leads to the Dark side.

Tried to keep the reveal from my kids but they never really wanted to watch Star wars and one day I guess my son at school was told Darth Vader was Luke Skywalker's father and the best I got to do was when he asked if Darth Vader is Luke Skywalker's father I answered "his father, he is"

as far as details you missed, you failed to mention that the tie fighter/millennium falcon chase scene in the asteroids is taken straight from world war two era combat footage from b-17/b-24 bombers taken while they were being attacked by german interceptors. the multiple quad turrets on the falcon are purposefully placed to resemble the turrets on those bombers. some scenes are frame for frame reproductions. dive deep, friendo.
