- Can a PPL student, who have just done her first Solo flight in a Cessna 172, be coached to fly a full traffic circuit in a Boeing 737NG simulator?
In todays episode I will give you a short interview and a full circuit including two landings with AFTA student Beatrice.
I hope you will enjoy this video and make sure to come in and discuss it in the Mentour Aviation app, after the video! To download the app, use the links below!

Is it possible to make this a series? It would be really cool to see the training progression or even just updates to how she’s doing in the future. I wish her the best with her career!
I can certainly ask her!
@@MentourPilot yes, please. If Beatrice allows it, we could follow her progress from flight attendant to 737 pilot.
Fantastic idea!
@@MentourPilot It's would be great for a series.
That would be very nice to follow!
I agree with other commenters, this is real life (in a sim of course), interesting interaction between captain and a student. Also, kudos to Beatrice for being willing to be filmed coming in cold to this new situation. Excellent video.
Thank you! Glad you liked it!
Agree 100% The only bad thing is how jealous I am. ;^)
I’m jealous too! I will never fly a plane, but when Beatrice finishes her training she can be my pilot anytime.
Well done. Great attitude, early as it is is better than many jet pilots in the industry.
@@MentourPilot
what you do is so informative about flying, very good
I am impressed at the speed you make corrections to controls and switches - lightning speed no faffing about- Seconds matter
I am waiting for "Can my dog land a Boeing 737?" video 🤣. Keep it up! You are the best so far...
a350 yes
737 nope
@@Will_Vincent :D
I think the best parts for me is when he’s silently repeating the checklists to himself. It shows that this is what he normally does and that it’s super real.
Yeah i was kinda amazed and shocked at the first time i saw it, i was like, is he talking to the first officer so silently, or he is just repeating a checklist? But then he did it again and listened more carefully to realise he is just such a 'double checker' and so used to it that this is an honest automatic reaction from him like flying a real machine . Its brilliant =D
Easily the most fun thing to watch in almost any area: Someone who is interested in something learning it under expert instructions.
I earned my PPL many years ago (it's sadly now expired) but I still often relive my first solo. I was on the edge of my seat all through this video as I enjoyed it so much. I wish Beatrice every success in her career.
Excellent! Glad you liked it!
Don't you just need a flight review & medical to start flying again?
@@djinn666 Thank you. I had to divert my money to my twin sons' education and I'm a bit too old now. I'm still crazy about aeroplanes and spend a lot of time looking skywards.
I often relive my PPL flight test too, as well as my first solo.
In the same position, had my ppl at 19, money and life got in the way and now at 44 I’m too old to start again. Biggest regret in life. Still a huge aviation nut. I wish her every success in her career.
I mean any cadet would have love to have an instructor so calm and collected like you. She would definitely cherish this moment.
You always made it look so easy Mentour. Now i actually saw how hard it is to safely fly a plane like this. Wow.
Yep, it’s not easy but training helps!. Glad you liked it!
@@MentourPilot I really liked it.
This is amazing! Very much respect to Beatrice and you Mentour for doing this. You seem to be an amazing instructor! Have a great year mentouring these future pilots.
Thank you! Glad you liked it and YES, she did a great job!
I was expecting using autopilot and ILS and here we have very nice student doing HAND-FLY a B737NG! very nice! thank you for another great video
Thank YOU for watching. Of course she would hand fly! 😉
Hand flying IS flying. Autopilot is cheating: it's a computer doing it.
@@raymondgoubet Well, autopilot is still flying, it's just that you are monitoring, not actively touching the controls.
@@ryan_n05 I know that! But anybody can watch a machine doing anything. Doing it yourself is what counts. Having to rely on a machine is not knowing how to do it in full. I am old school, but this is the best way to know something.
@@raymondgoubet ok boomer
I know this is an old video, but watching in 2023 and this is so inspiring. I'm 43 but want to start a new career as a pilot because of stuff like this!
Good luck! Trust me the only limit IS the one you put yourself. Let's get It my friend!!!!!
First landing: okay with help. Second landing: okay without (much) help. I bet if there were a third she would have nailed it!
Yep! That’s what we are liking for when we assess; the ability to learn!
@@MentourPilot ... and she did very well.
moi01887 is ryan air what do u expect
@@Rich-sm3ho she landed way too smooth for Ryanair standards.
Michael 2k3d yeah I agree
She did a great job -- and it shows why Petter does so much pilot training -- he's a great teacher. He doesn't get flustered or irritated easily, which helps keep the student calm. Awesome effort for both of you!
The personality of the trainer makes a world of difference when learning something so technical. You are fantastic and patient. I remember training on a new CT scanner with a stressed out coach and it was a nightmare.
That was so neat. Brought back memories from the 80’s learning in a Cherokee. Please bring back Beatrice as she progresses, with crosswinds😀
I remember her when she was a flight attendant at Ryanair still, saw her in the flight school too, Ireland is a small country haha, living near Cork helps
There are sometimes nasty fogs near Cork airport.

Great video. The second approach gave me a bit of a chuckle but I flight sim at home in this aircraft all the time and its obvious to me I would have done 1000x worse. Thanks to Beatrice for participating!
Back in the late 90s I got to fly the KC135 simulator at March ARB. Took off and landed with great success, I was amazed on how real it felt. Up to that point I had only flown home simulators of fighter jets. My two biggest surprises was the feel and slow response of the big bird, also on my first landing I had forgotten how much higher the cockpit was off the ground. Needless to say my first landing caught me by surprise. I was use to seeing a much lower profile at home.
You are an amazing teacher Petter, and very nice to see the improvement in the second try. Great video and great job Beatrice.
I am still in love with aviation
You are a really nice and cool and calm instructor dear mentor
You are awesome
That was a fun video Peter! Very cool seeing you teach.
Great that you liked it!! I’ll try and do more of them
This made my day! I'm not sure I can explain why watching her fly and seeing excellent guidance from Peter here make me so happy, but I'm glad I tuned in.
For all of this amazing content I really think that he needs way more subscribers.
Aww, thank you! That’s so nice to hear.
Good job Beatrice! Congrats on putting yourself out there, not everyone is willing to show themselves learning and thus making small mistakes, being vulnerable basically. You will be a great pilot!
This was amazing. It was interesting to see your hand move to do something then stop and tell her what she needs to do. Very intuitive. Thanks. Best wishes Beatrice.
"It's just like a big Cessna" LOL
It is, in some sense
@@MentourPilot I Absolutely believe you, since you said how easy it responds. Just it's funny that you say it
Lol, it is really funny to hear that, as my first time in a 737 sim, the Training Captain said, forget the complexity of how it looks, don't be scared of it, it's just like a really big Cessna. That comment during the vid, took me back a lot of years...
There's a saying that pilots make - the view out the front is the same. I don't have jet time but have flown 152;'s, 172''s, 182's, Cherokees, Saratogas, Vikings, SR-22, and a few others. I can tell you the faster the aircraft, the more you have to keep in front of it. I remember struggling with same issues of keeping an eye on speed, rate of climb/descent, rate of turn and keeping the plane coordinated. The speeds on approach are almost triple in a commercial airliner compared to a Cessna so good for her to be able to fly a relatively stable approach and landing.
This 1 is amazing Captain. Hope you make next chapter with this young pilot again
This is awesome. Like others have said, I hope she agrees to do a series and we can see her progress. Great video Mentour and let Beatrice know she will be an amazing pilot.
I love this channel. Ive had a horrible fear of flying since I took a delayed flight back from Turkey around 15 years ago. I remember a feeling of the plane tilting to one side and a loud noise coming from one side of the plane. It frightened me to death and my blood ran cold. Ever since ive been petrified to fly to the point that I took a 1 hour flight to germany a few year after and burst into tears. Ive watched many of your videos and youve helped me feel so at ease now I understand what is happening and I was able to fly a short flight to northern Ireland last month without having a meltdown! Thankyou so much for these, they help so much
Awesome to see this. Great improvements on her part.
Teachable, thank you Beatrice, an invaluable skill in aviation.
WOW! I’ve watched a ton of Mentour videos, and this one is one of the best. Very informative. Kudos to the videographer behind the pilots. Fantastic job capturing the action!
Very very inspiring! After watching this video my confidence has gone up so much more.
Great work, Captain Petter. Thank you so much!
This is one of the best videos I have seen on this channel. It will be great to follow student Beatrice's progress, as many have suggested, if possible. She has clearly got what it takes to succeed.
Superb content. I have experienced a (static) 738 sim on a few occasions and I can empathise with the same mistakes that she made, not having the 'feel' of the plane and chasing the FD and so watching her conquer the beast on video would be a fantastic programme. Best of luck to her. I can stop sweating now!
@Mentour Pilot This is huge! Beatrice did a marvelous job! I echo many of the other viewers comments that you should try and make this a series. I myself am just a week or 2 away from my solo flight in pursuit of my PPL. and I love to see how I am doing compared to my peers. As usual Peter, I loved this video and sit in anticipation of your next episode! Happy New Year! Blue Skies!
Amazing, very good... It's very interesting in notice that the plane really wants to flight and not go down when you came close to the runway!
Mentour: "Don't be afraid... It's jussst like a big Cessna" .... The positive feeling is why I love watching Mentour Pilot Videos!
I'm a hobby SIM-Pilot and got a "real" 777 simulator flight for my birthday. I remember how thrilling and overwhelming that was for me although I was completely familiar with the 777 avionics and cockpit (at least to the extent of my simulation software). But it was still such a huge difference between having a real cockpit with buttons instead of short keys on a computer keyboard.
So when I consider that she's not that familiar with the 737 I'm impressed how she handled it. I found it incredible complicated to keep overall awareness for speed, altitude, pitch, bank and position itself in manual flight. It was exhausting!
On my 2nd attempt on the simulator I wanted to try having the autopilot fly the plane (except for the final approach and touchdown) and I programmed the short route and approach into the autopilot and controlled it without the help of the instructor. This worked really well. Since it was a realistic simulator I'd have mastered that in a real plane I guess. But flying manually completely would have been a disaster and I'd use up all my fuel without being able to align properly to the runway where everything comes together.
Great video Mentour i love these simulator videos, have a fantastic weekend my friend.
I’ll try and do more of them!
Best video to date! Good luck on your flight training, Beatrice!
Wow what an experience I'd reckon for a ppl student! She looks to progress really well.
Makes me remember last year tagging along with a friend for his and co colleague annual check rides. The briefing and their sim tests were tremendously interesting to have witnessed.
Afterword he put me in the right seat of the E190 sim. Had not flown in a long time (not continue after high school...), so that was quite an experience, a fond memory and the 1st t/go captured on film :)
Got a Thumbs Up at 6 minutes in! Loved the teaching format for this one. I agree with some of the other comments; nice change up with the simulator instruction. I am an old Navy veteran who really enjoys this channel. Great job guys!!!!
This was a terrific video! Beatrice did very well for her first time in a 737.
That looks like fun. I have been a passenger multiple times in an aircraft but I know nothing about flying one except for what I have learned from recently finding and watching Mentour's Channel. It sure is interesting and I appreciate all the video's and information you post for everyone. Thank you.
I'm 5 hours into my PPL Training, but this video made me smile the whole time!! Love your content!
I loved the video. I do a lot of sim flying in a 738. It's my dream to get time one that simulator. Keep the videos coming.
Your such a good teacher! I did a simulation experience and I have flew study level aircraft In P3D but getting into an actual cockpit is so overwhelming. Your students are luck to have you!
Thank you , one of your best videos. I am a senior citizen just getting back into flying; , got my Commercial, CFI, instrument etc more than 30 years ago , using my Veterans benefits, but could not afford to continue flying after that. Having fun now with an instructor learning GPS approaches etc. That did not exist in the late 1970s. Your skills and abilities to teach are awesome, I am
sure many first officers are benefiting from flying with you.
Yes Commander, We Really Liked That! Nice interview. Professor Petr! Beautiful how calm you are to help her be calm. She must have been really nervous. I think she’s gonna make it. Thnx, CJ
Among your most interesting of cockpit videos, on par with Emergency descent and terrain. Fascinating!
Mentour u have that calming effect with people. Great instructors u are.
That was great! You are an excellent instructor. More of those please.
She will make a GREAT Pilot! Calm, cool and collected...
Agreed
What a beautiful way of teaching - positive, assuring, supportive. That's how it should be, making us reaching the best of our potential. Thank you very much for sharing!
This was fantastic! :)
Glad you liked it!
Happy New Year Mantour, really enjoyed the video.
Bang on! LOL Just shows how good of an instructor you are! I also would like to see this as a series to watch how Beatrice progresses in her training.
Now that was awesome! I felt right there with her!! Thanks Mentour!!
Great video. Wish her all the best.
Great to see the progress and what can be achieved with the right training. Nothing beats flying hours, skill and training for all conditions, whatever the job.
This was great. 👍🏼
Thanks so much for this video, and congratulations to Beatrice! I love this video.✈️
Met Beatrice last month up at AFTA as I was waiting to be called into my Ryanair Mentored Programme Interview. So friendly and made me feel very comfortable. Aced the interview and sim test and have been accepted onto the programme, due to begin in November after I finish school!
My heart would be jumping literally with the (excitement/fear), good Job Mentour and good luck Beatrice 👏🏻👏🏻
As a PPL student soon to have my skill test, this experience of landing B737 in a sim would be absolutely fantastic! Great video, thanks!
Love this! Really enjoyed watching it.
Well I’m taking my CPL now, actually it similar to landing Cessna but here more complicated.
I have felt nervous just like I’m on this simulator doing the landing.
Great job for the instructor for easy way teaching and good landing for the student on 1st time on simulator.
Thanks for this video. A long time ago I was in a six axis simulator for the KC-10(DC-10 AF tanker) courtesy of my Air Force pilot nephew. My prior experience was not an actual Cessna, but the Flight Simulator version of the 172. I had also taken lessons in an ultralight, but not actually soloed with it, just a short hop and drop in line with the runway. In the simulator, which I assume had no crosswinds or other complications to deal with, I was able to surprise my nephew by actually flying a pattern successfully like your student did.
It was made possible, mostly by the instructor doing for me what you did for her. In my case, not having the rudder and brake experience she had in an actual Cessna, I did not manage to keep the plane on the runway after hitting the centerline accurately, but the many many pattern take-offs and landings I had practiced in the fake Cessna gave me the ability, greatly enhanced by the real seat of the pants feel of flight dynamics that motion simulator gave to my body, to bring that plane more or less safely onto that simulated runway at March AFB including clearance of the nearby mountains needed to do the pattern there. Now I know how much more help I really had in that one time, unforgettable exercise.
Your best video from what I've watched untill now! I would like to see more training in the simulator in different situations from rockies to more experienced candidates!! And also mistakes that cause difficulty in controlling the plane or even a crush!! This would be also very interesting stuff to watch and learn!!! I'm trying to fall asleep while learning things about aviation (I'm little bit weird person haha!) and now I fully woke up and felt excited like I was with you in the cockpit!!! Please do more stuff like this!!!
Also good morning (it's 8.30 in Greece now) and have a happy new year with great videos!!! 😊
Awesome video as always👍👍
Great video. The student is great, and the teaching is great. What got my attention was how pro Peter is in the cockpit. At 13:59, he (instinctually) does this automatic check, verbally clicking the items off to himself, waving his hand over the panel. Its amazing to watch. At another point he does something similar I think to the autopilot.
Really cool seeing how quickly you handle pilot monitoring tasks.
This one is so good to listen!! Watching this feels good...
Really loved this video!!!!
Great to hear!!
Would love to see Beatrice's progress through training if she's willing. Well done, Beatrice, and wishing you well in your journey.
I just watched this and that was fantastic! Well done to her! Wonderful to see! I used to be a racing instructor and the people that had much more skill re driving inputs were, always Pilots! I would love to see more if it is possible and to watch her improve and become a Pilot I hope! I wish her well!
Nice, great video and great experience for her. You are nice, calm, relaxed instructor, if that was your usual approach to a student pilot.
I have been lucky enough to be able to rent 2 737- 800 sims. One in Budapest and one in Toronto. It was an amazing experience and a lot harder than it looks! But at least no crashes! Thank you for the great video!
Happy New Year Mentour :)
You too!!
Well done she will do great and she has a very good teacher. Makes a guy feel very good about the pilots we all fly with.
That was fantastic! Beatrice is a very impressive student!
You a re an excellent teacher! Of course having an excellent student helps.
Great Video. She did a marvelous job!!! There is nothing easy about wrestling an aircraft to the centerline with minimal exposure to its characteristics. Job well done!!!
This is amazing content, you put so much thought into this channel, you're just great
This is one of the coolest videos you have done!
I really LOVED this video! So real! So much respect for student Beatrice and for Petter teacher 🤩
Brilliant. So calm when teaching
Mentour, FANTASTIC! I've watched this 3X and will likely another 5! Bob
Why is this video unlisted?!?!? This is real life! This is real training! Who wouldn't want to see this?
because he mentions the name of the airline
What is unlisted?
@@theflyingmylle unlisted is where the video is available, but not easily found. You have to search to find it.

Great video, i really liked noticing the differences between this and the other sim trainings you have uploaded over here. You brought up some things you explained that are very interesting to people like me that dont know how to fly. That you dont explain in other videos with more experienced students because they are already more advanced.
Great interview and best wishes with your future career!
This is fantastic! Thanks for doing this!
Best I have seen on your channel. Absolutely Fantastic.
Wish i had a nice instructor teaching me like that... Seems easy from where we stand ^^
Best of luck to her, she seems to be well on the path to success.
This was a fantastic video!!! I've been talking about flight sims for a long time but you have shown how important this training tool can be used in the real world!!! Thank you Sir!!! This would be a great training series if you want to show how a student can progress their learning curve!!! the technology is out there to make pilots safer and more confident!! Even on a small flight simulator like I have ( a laptop...Joysticks..yokes.. and rudder.. and a good flight sim package like..Xplane 9 thru 11...Xfs.and.MFS 2020 coming soon and a whole lot more!!!).. "It's just like a big CESSNA"... ....
Absolutely loved this video. So positive, really fascinating.
Excellent, more please!
