What are Pilots REALL doing and what are they NOT allowed to do once the aircraft has reached its cruise altitude?
Can we Eat, Sleep or listen to music in the cockpit? What about particular discussion subjects that we NEVER should talk about?
I will be covering 5 different areas in this video and I can almost guarantee that you will learn something new if you watch the whole video.

@Baker Dakota useful information, as always
When will you cover the trevor jacob crash?

Playing games in cruise, huh? Next level stuff: bringing a gaming laptop AND a flight joystick, so you can fly a plane while flying a plane. Well, I did this as passenger and people were looking at me in some weird ways.
Hahaha. it's a good one.
When people look over at you, just say "I know a shortcut." 😄
@I'm Negan nah, they play beer drinking and football watching simulator
...i did that as well :))) playing on tablet a flight simulator game while i was flying as a passenger, same reaction from others like you had
I hate these back seat drivers looking over my shoulder 😉
"The pilot with the least amount of food in the mouth answers the radio." :P
wow, that's just... wow
I can imagine that's an "in joke" with pilots!
No its the truth lol. I am an airline pilot. What do you expect us to do? Waiting for the other person to get done eating sometimes is just not an option when youve been delayed from the beginning of the day and havent had time to eat all day and its 4pm or later. Sometimes passing through 10 is the best time to eat that burrito that you got an hour ago as your rushed to your plane because you had a plane swap on top of the 29 minute turn you are expected to maintain :D
A A You could try taking turns taking bites lol.
okay now i understand why it always sounds so mumbled everytime i listen to ATC..... ;)
I could have sworn a pilot replied to me “sorry, I was eating” when I asked one a question on frequency today. At least they were honest!

Airlines should put an educational booklet in the back-of-the-seat pocket explaining the in-air goings-on that passengers might worry or be curious about.
Love how he has the red and green pillows arranged as if they were nav lights: And he has them right.
I remember visiting the cockpit as a kid, in a DC-9 and A320. This was pre-911 obviously. Both times both pilots were drinking coffee and reading newspapers and that was really weird to me because I was ten and didn't know about autopilot.
Also one time my cousin visited the cockpit when she was flying I think Lufthansa from Germany and one of the pilots let her sit in his lap and press a button or flip a switch or something. Which button/switch it was even she doesn't remember because she was like 5-6 at the time, probably something like the seatbelt light since it was apparently shortly before landing. I kinda miss when flying was chill like that, though I'm guessing letting a random kid flip switches was against company policy even in the 90s.
Me too in an A320, a few years ago now, i am 14 so after 9/11, but it was on the ground not in flight
Yeah, I visited an A330 cockpit a couple times and I was always amazed at how the captain would make any inconvenience funny. I was even more surprised when I saw the pilot duo exchanging cookies and recommending each other different brands of cookies! That was so much fun being up there and is the reason I’m going for piloting. I just felt at home and so comfortable in there, could never see myself doing anything else.
I visited the cockpit back in the early 70's and remarked about how many instruments there were. 12 years old....
What happens in the cockpit stays in the cockpit
Whatever happened to the voice recorder?
zoperxplex erased the recordings :)
zoperxplex Captain Joe said in a video about the CVR that a pilot he was flying with said to him “Have we been saying anything bad about our CEO within the last two hours, oh well, better erase the recordings anyway” and then pressed the erase button 😂😂
Laslus the minimum is 30 mins. Usually up to 2 hours for fixed wing airplanes
Especially with all the stewardess going in and out.
I’d love to hear some pilot stories from the heyday of commercial jet aircraft when pan am and twa pilots were like rockstars and the flight attendants all looked like models. I bet there were some serious shenanigans in the cockpit.
I was a Flight Dispatcher for an airline and sometimes the pilots would notice a higher fuel burn than was planned. At that time they would ACARS me about the situation so I could help come up with a solution. I might recommend a short-cut they could ask ATC for or I might check the wind velocity at different altitudes. Sometimes I would find that the problem was that they were right in the middle of the jetstream but winds would be dying down soon and the high fuel burn would become less of a factor. If it was really bad we would discuss it together and come come up with a plan for diverting the aircraft if we needed to land to get more fuel and decided at what point that decision to divert or not would be made. At this point I would call that airport operations center and inform them of the situation, just in case we might need them. My point is this: It wasn't just the pilots trying to figure out the problem and come up with a solution. The Flight Dispatcher was part of that process too.
As a nervous flyer I love watching your videos explaining aircraft related subjects. Really helps me to understand more and worry less.
same imao
I always take 2 benadryl when I fly. Cheap and effective for me.
As a non pilot I never knew that planes didn’t fly straight from point A to point B. I knew that you couldn’t fly through restricted airspace like something to do with the military but having regular airways was something I had never even considered. There is a reason why I have been watching this channel nonstop since I found it about a week ago.
Speaking from my personal experience, that's where crossword champions come from.
And sudoku in my case
I call that a video game, which has an automatic pause when you look away.
[More] seriously, the way it works, you don't just read a clue and resume looking at the horizon while you think about it. In truth, regular crossword puzzle workers are processing many combinations/permutations. Is 30 seconds facing the sheet uncommon? I'd bet that it's not...because I sometimes spend longer than that on a solution. Sudoku is even worse - a lot worse, as you keep scanning, processing/rejecting solutions, considering alternatives...
You really should be certain you have the discipline not to stare at it, or obsess. Some do. Not all.
Bill Woo your first
Very true thing😂😂😂
I was just thinking about that
I was lucky (through a personal relationship with a Qantas pilot) to fly in the cockpit of a 747 from Sydney to Hong Kong in August 2001 (timing was lucky). It was great fun. Captain showed me his flight simulator on his new Palm Pilot (long time ago). The approach and landing in great weather in Hong Kong was sensational. Very pretty and the elevated position during touch down etc. Will never forget this experience.
Great video! My adventure in aviation started when I got lucky and got to sit at the spare seat in the back of the cockpit, for the whole duration of the flight, when I was 11 years old. OSL-ARN. SAS DC-9-41. Probably around 1998. It was amazing! Breaking through the clouds with a cockpit view, and listening to those cool radio conversations. The pilots had a great vibe and made me feel so utterly safe, so safe I can’t even begin to describe it. The flight attendant asked me what I wanted to eat, and I asked for the meal that was the least popular that day. She smiled. I then asked the pilots when I could start my flying lessons. They told me I had to be 15 (Norwegian aviation rules), and here I am, 32 years old, with a ppl-a license. Now, I just need to get that instrument rating...
My favorite part! "Food for the crew can't be from the same source as the passengers to avoid food poisoning" - brought to you courtesy of "Airplane" 🤣 - AND STOP CALLING ME SHIRLEY!
He didn't say the food comes from a different source than the passengers' food! He said each pilot has to have a different meal from the other pilot in case one option is contaminated. Essentially, the answer to the question "chicken or beef?" is "I'll have chicken, he'll have beef".
@@cassandragough ahh, I misunderstood what he was saying, but it's still true, they can't both have the fish! 🤣 You have seen the comedy classic "Airplane" right?
Double food poisoning cases are bad news... I was traveling by car and camping with a friend after we both ate bad feta black bean dip. We were both incapacitated, but were off phase from each other by a number of hours. It was a very long, surreal trip... I remember vomiting, surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery! My friend pulled off to rest, blocking a runaway truck ramp! It was definitely a case of desperation and impaired judgement. It seemed like we were never going to get home.
The 20 minutes of complete silence must be awkward as hell
RhysMarjoram I’m a taxi driver and that’s a standard journey these days 🙁
@@Ian_Livesey Oh that's so true. Having the radio on is a godsend on these drives. Or, you're playing relationship coach, psychologist or life advisor and know WAAAY too much about your customer at the end of the ride...
@@Ian_Livesey I think it´s actually quite nice for your passangers. You may get a bit bored because of the "awkward" silence, but i always enjoy it when theres a bit silence in our world of busyness. These days you hear all the time some kind of noise, be it traffic noise, airplanes (which dont bother me by the way xD) or some kind of other sounds, like music or anything related to social media, youtube and instagram for example..
Many introverts actually enjoy silence. It’s not awkward at all. 🤔
Most are on smartphones these days, so attention is fixed on that. Some light volume talk radio keeps the driver entertained.

Yep, port & starboard pillows. Wonders what the astern light looks like. Oh wait-- must be his white dog laying on the back rest! LOL
I didn't through that
Nah, it's actually the Italian flag with his white shirt in the middle
Where are his doggie wings?
I missed the real important stuff about drinking booze, discussing the plans for the night abroad, messing around with the flight attendants...
I heard from a source there is a lot of sex on long haul flights. Also during overnight stays
the sleep of a captain is like a cat sleeping always aware of any change that may happen
I was told by a long haul captain that one of the jobs was to continually assess Plan B. That is, if an emergency happened now, where could they land? Sometimes, over vast oceans, the answer is “nowhere”.
I wanted to be a pilot when I was younger, that didn't happen lol. And then I developed a fear of flying but after watching your videos I am way more calmer. So I say thank you for taking your time to do these videos.
If you ever would not want or not be able to fly anymore for any reason, I think education and flight schools would take you with the greatest pleasure. You have shown that teaching is one of your great talents as well!
I'm glad pilots can take naps. I had a delayed takeoff once (as a passenger) because the crew was late (I think a flight attendant called in sick and they had to bring someone in). The pilot assured us it wasn't because the crew needed their "beauty sleep" and I was thinking, you know, I'd really rather you did get your beauty sleep before you take my life into your hands. I would not be mad about that.
You break down the profession so well. Makes it almost human and not so out of this world!
Hi Petter, I just want to say, you have been such a huge inspiration for me this past year. Out of all of the pilot RUclipsrs, you are by far the best and, from what I can personally see, the most passionate of them all. My wife, who is decidedly not interested in aviation, knows your first name and voice by heart. That says something. Keep making videos, and I will continue to support you.
After around 20 flights I’ve done nothing but sweat and shake the entire flight and every time I say it’s my last flight ✈️
But since watching your videos I’ve feel so so much different about flying and now can’t wait for the next one, such hopefully information you deserve a medal 🏅 bravo 🙌

8:00 Social competence - I like it. I’ve just watched the Delta Air Lines 1141 Mayday episode, in which the non-compliance to the sterile cockpit rule was an issue in the crash.
Extremely insightful, thanks for sharing!
Mentour. For the alert thing in the video you should use the master caution light from the 737
When I was invited to the Captain's Seat 747 Virgin Atlantic many years ago whilst he took a nap I spoke to the First Officer who was also a Captain said to me they regularly discussed simulated emergencies and how they would deal with them ! The Flight Engineer said to me they are ALWAYS on alert on a 10 hour cruise on autopilot.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge ❤️🙂

Hey mentor, could you please do a video on departure and arrival cockpit briefings?
Hey Mentour great video as always! I think it would be interesting if you could make a slightly more technical video about how the pilot monitoring fills out the OFP and how does it change/differ when you have a diversion or an amended route from ATC?
Thank you so much for making this, ive been curious for a while about this topic.
Great video. Thanks for sharing!
Fantastic and interesting video as always!!!! :)

Riktigt bra informtion om flyg. Tack
On our transatlantic cargo flights with 3 person crews, one will stay in the cockpit and the other 2 unroll sleeping bags and sleep 6 of the 9 hours while over the ocean. All are awake and in their seats only when over land.
Imagine the panicmode of those pilots as they realized what's happening
Question about planning vs reality: what is the point (in time) when the pilots have actually to 'investigate' the deviation from the plan? How many minutes must the plan deviate from the plan to actually investigate a re route or other measures? I can imagine when 'reality' predicts you're 5 minutes late at your destination, no alternative actions are needed (or are?), 20 minutes late may cause schedule hassles, 1 hour late may cause serious ( fuel) issues, etc. What is the line between not worrying and taking actions?
You are so easy to listen to!! Thanks for all the awesome insight..

The most credible theory for the flight that went on for too long was that the pilots had done something bad, like falling asleep, then decided to fly out of the way so that the voice recorder would run out of space and cover up whatever they did.
Why would you come up with a fake story that is ALSO really bad though...? If this was what happened, I would assume they'd at least have a cover story that sounds like not their fault, like one of the pilots being ill and wanting to see if he got better in time for redundancy for landing, or some fault with the plane that they could pretend they were fixing during that time that couldn't be verified later. Not that I endorse that, obviously, just if you're gonna lie anyway, you'd lie in your favor...
Great video, I’ve always wondered what you do. I fly long haul and think “what are they actually doing now we are up here?” 👍🏼

MentourPilot, love your channel. I am a big flight sim (X-Plane 11) enthusiast and love to fly the B738's. I have visited some places where they actually use X-Plane 11 for training purposes. I always start from Cold and Dark and follow checklist procedures. So, much fun. Anyways, onto my question. Do any airlines have like a ride along program? Meaning, someone who is interested in becoming a pilot, do they have any kind of programs where someone could sign up to ride along in the jumpseat with the pilots to see if it's really for them? Some, like me, may be interested by doing it from a sim experience, but real life experience, in my opinion, would tell more. I know there would be a lot of security issues here, but I suppose that is what thorough background checks and NDA's are for right? Any idea on this?
Love your vids. Have no inclination to fly but I love the information!
Great information! Thank you very much.
Thanks for the insight. For those of us who are marginal flyers, the more we understand that pilots are human and have the same needs as passengers, the more reassured we are. Your efforts in demystifying the routines of the front end of the aircraft pay big dividends to those of us who don’t entirely grasp the science and art of aviation. Thanks. And oh my god those puppies are cute!

Banning politics or religion from the cockpit is the finest idea I've ever heard. Almost like too much emotion and opinion makes it impossible to do your job well... wish my employer had that rule.
Mine too. Politics are toxic.
"I have learned three things never to discuss with people: religion, politics, abd The Great Pumpkin"
@@rnsteve2265 Especially these days. People on all sides seem to view those with opposing opinions as less than human.
@@MrEdrftgyuji I feel that 9/11 was the spark that made politics even more polarised to the point where it is today.

My question is, how does a pilot deal with the stress and pain of being confined to a chair for 6 or 7 hours. I know that I find an economy class seat almost intolerable after only two. Business class is clearly different.
I guess similar to truck drivers
Its good to know these things before i start trainings
All the videos by mentour pilot are amazing and keep going ahead captain
Most important question for YT pilots: can you film yourself during flight?
Yes some do, check out Corporate Pilot Life. I love their videos!
I worked on UK Weatherships. I remember one Speedbird (BA) who, as usual, wanted the full service (Speed, Track, Bearing). After we gave him his range and bearing, he STATED WE WERE WRONG, and requested we calculate Range and Bearing again.
At this point we radio techs knew something was wrong so we pulled out our camera and recorded the radar display that showed the aircraft move diagonally 500 miles to it's proper course.
We reported the incident and the BA pilot was whipped with a wet noodle. BA pilots always treated us like hired help, American carriers were the best - they delivered messages to wives and loved ones. One weathership crew member had a wife in hospital and the American crew VISITED HER with a large bunch of flowers!
I imagine that you got on well with the Aer Lingus pilots, they are a breed of their own. They are laid back and relaxed because they know what they are doing and the airline has not had a crash or incident causing injury in more than 50 years.
phenominal way of explaining this info very educational and easy to understand. i appreciate this content and really enjoy learning more about aviation. flying soon and was always wondering what happens during flights. so glad that you answered my curiosity. Great video Mentour i enjoyed it, back in the days where we were allowed inflight cockpit visits i saw the Pilot Monitoring doing a crossword, it was a LHR to CPT 12 hour flight though. Have a great weekend.
Petter hello from EYVI :) i work at a groundhandling company and we provide GH for your airline, and trust me, pilots do find some spare time to eat on ground even during short turnarounds :) just another great video, thank you so much for creating all the stuff for us :)
Hi mentour, about eating on the cockpit. What if one of the pilotes brought a bad smelling meal and the other couldn't stand the smell?
I think the airline supplies their meals rather than them bringing their own. However, I would imagine it would be like sitting at a dinner table where someone is eating something you don't like the smell of, you just put up with it.
