    It has quite a warm, even old-fashioned sound for a solid state amp.
    Get yourself some inexpensive aural nostalgia!

    Great video Bill! That amp is so damn cute 😍Pretty affordable too! I have an AC30 and it's not something you can casually get out and play (heavy and loud). This seems like it'd be a great compromise for many people.

    Bearing in mind, these are not expensive, there are some fairly simple MODs that make a significant difference to this amp. There is a diode limiter* which when clipped out increases the power / volume. If you do this, you can then add a better speaker (it's a budget one for the price) to the existing box OR if you are really bold as I am just now (I bought the amp used / hardly out of the box for £40) you can cut the whole thing down to a head unit and cab it** with a 12" Celestion Greenback 25W / 8 Ohm.
    At this point all you need is a Sweet Cream dynamic OD pedal £40 (reacts to your playing, can OD from the guitar with hum-buckers) and a half decent reverb pedal - I am using a Shimverb £30 - and you are into Peter Green Blues power at realistically low volumes on the clean channel. Try this on an AC30 or the cheaper Laney clone LC30/12 and it is way too loud.
    FYI the built in gain channel is this amps weak spot.
    At this point you have a practice stack which could easily record or gig small venues for not a lot of cash, and it is a fun project not beyond most people with basic DIY / Craft / Soldering skills.
    * Google this bit. It's there if you look.
    ** I bought a broken Fender Champ 110 circa 1996 for £25 and took out the amp box, replaced the existing 12" speaker, re Tolexed and replaced with VOX cloth :) - perfect size to sit under the Pathfinder for a lovely mini stack that remains portable.

    I have two practice amps for home use,
    A Blackstar Fly and this Vox Pathfinder.
    I've had the Vox since around 2007, use it everyday.
    It's an awesome sounding amp, and I use it connected to two 10" speaker cabs.
    I put an output jack in it with a switch to cut the internal speaker.
    Also I use a Digitech multi effects pedal with it.
    It sounds amazing. Great sounding amp.
    Nice video thanks.

    You've just taught me a lesson about this amp, namely that it really has an 'overdrive' that reacts to the level of Gain. Now I suspect that most of the complaints about it are coming from people who are 'Diming' the Gain. The way they were talking, it sounded like a buzzsaw as soon as you pushed the button.

    I just bought my vox pathfinder 10 after watching this and it's really worth it! Specially for room setup!
    Because it has an open back, the sound doesn't feel it's projected from the speakers blasted towards you. It fills the room with sound quite evenly and sounds natural.

    FWIW.....I GIG with a Pathfinder 15R that I had a cabinet built for, that has the stock chassis, with a 12" speaker. A whole lot more "ooomf" to it. I've played with guys using Fender Deluxe Reverbs and Vox AC 15s and AC 10s, and held my own very well. Most guitarists are amazed it's a Solid State, 15 watt amp.

Currently, a Mosaic 12-String Emulator, Mosky Silver Horse, Golden Tremolo (PF15R doesn't have trem) Donner Chorus, Joyo American Sound, Neewer Delay, and Donner Fuzz. • @BillyCrabbeMusic
      @BillyCrabbeMusic  2 года назад

      Hey pin! I think it may depend on what overdrive you use it with. I only had the BB preamp and the MI Blues pro - both decent overdrive pedals but work best when they are pushing tube amps. I'd be interested to see how like Helix or that style of fx would work with it. What are you using as an overdrive?

    Having had such wonderful luck with the Vox Pathfinder 15R, I decided I had to try the PF 10. It was a TOTALLY different amp, and not in a good way. I love the size, but the sound is pathetic. I ended up taking out the little 6.5" speaker, cutting out the baffle, and installing an 8" speaker. Helped a little, although it's still inadequate for much other than a "last resort" practice amp. VOX!.......bring back the humble Pathfinder 15R!

      Oh man! I’ve yet to try out the PF 15R! A couple of people have mentioned it to me after making this video. Need to get my hands on one. I can’t say I’ve had a similar experience with the PF10, it’s turned out to be quite a lovely amp for practicing and lessons. But I think that’s it, a good practice amp. Wouldn’t gig with it or rehearse.

    Hola billy! tengo este mismo amplificador el sonido limpio es muy calido y me gusta mucho. pero el overdrive no me gusta o no se si es bueno o no... que opinas del overdrive?

    • @BillyCrabbeMusic
      @BillyCrabbeMusic  2 года назад +1

      Hola, Leandro! En primer lugar, lo siento por la respuesta traducida por Google. Mi español no es genial, así que necesito la ayuda de Google. 😅El tema de la distorsión es grande con muchas opiniones diferentes pero al final del día se reduce al gusto personal. Me gusta imaginar la distorsión como píxeles en una imagen. Cuanto más pixelada está una imagen, menos clara se vuelve. Lo mismo con la distorsión. Si añades demasiada distorsión, suena delgada (en Grecia decimos que suena como una mosca). Esto también depende de la calidad del pedal o amplificador de guitarra. El Pathfinder no tiene tubos, por lo que obtener un buen sonido de distorsión (o overdrive) puede ser complicado pero factible. Personalmente me gusta un sonido suave distorsionado/overdrive. Así que comenzaría con la menor cantidad de distorsión y lentamente aumentaría hasta donde comienza a ser notable. También puede controlar lo dura que es la distorsión agregando algo de reverberación o retraso. Entonces puedes ajustarlo si quieres un sonido más pesado. Te recomiendo que escuches a Andy Timmons, tiene un tono increíble. Espero que esto ayude, tal vez haya un video que pueda hacer para esta pregunta donde tenga más sentido. ¿Quién es tu guitarrista favorito en este momento?

High-end consumer electronics that put alot of effort into the presentation of their packaging, maybe. With anything else, it just feels like padding the video to hit the 10 minute mark for algorithmic purposes. Also, alot of musicians buy used gear so it's likely they will never interact with the original packaging.
