If Ren is the best of music today, Ren + Chinchilla are the best of Ren. They complement each other so well, and like Ren she pours every ounce of herself into her performance.
Now you need to get into solo Chinchilla. "1:5" live and "Fingers" live are both fantastic introductions to her.

Most interpret this song as being about prescription medication that inappropriate or advertised and how it makes you feel dead inside. The loud chair at the beginning is, i believe, a pun on 'cherophobia', the fear of being happy, which certainly ties into the song.
Also, thank you for sharing about your husband. Stories like that need to be told, but there's so much shaming and silence in our society around issues like addiction. I'm super happy he's doing so well.
So, it's less about addiction, and more about the cycle of depression and how medication can cause an altered state of mind, where you don't feel yourself. The dissociation... like you are the walking dead; walking around in a floating chalk outline.
I mean, the addiction thing is also an applicable interpretation... music hits you how it hits, but the original intent is a little more pointed to antidepressants/anti-anxiety medication.

They are a great combination. Ren has great taste in picking people to duet with. I believe that there's at least one new song coming with Chinchilla and songs with a Canadian singer he found on Facebook while staying there. Ren also took Chinchilla busking in Brighton when she was there recording. I think there's 2 street performances. Love your reactions.

A couple of fun facts as well: this was performed with basically no collaborative rehearsal... She knew his song and essentially jumped in with blind harmonies.
And of course, interpretation is always left up to the listeners, but for Ren (idk her angle quite as well), this was about chasing the cure/finding relief from the pain and mental anguish he suffered because of his illness.

Hey Nicole! I have heard this version of the song so many times and it is wonderful to see someone finally recognise that this scene, the actual physical scene, is about two people dealing with their own problems, whatever those might be, and that each person represents a different aspect of each other. It was a very deliberate effort on their part to frame the scene as they did. If you listen to the studio version of this song, it is exceptionally different, to the point that it doesn't even sound like the same song. The interplay between their physicality and their musical emotion is so prevalent in the live version that the studio version feels utterly inferior and so simple, in a negative way.
Love your work as always! Keep digging, but you really should check out How To Be Me (Live), Ren x Eden Nash - Humble, and Crutch ft. Bibi (this one is extremely personal as it was his direct response to first becoming sick also it was the track with his actual girlfriend, Bibi, at the time). You'll love the very positive and upbeat style of Humble but appreciate the deep visceral emotion and physicality of Crutch.

I think this one demonstrates the control he has over his voice...the cracks, the "off pitches"... all so deliberately utilized to represent the desperation and frustration.

You found Chinny! Level: Expert - Listening to Ren you will find so many other artists that branch off and create their own Rabbit Holes. Chinchilla is definitely one you will want to explore....Her vocals are literally insane and comparable to Edele in tone and range. Oh, and like REN..she doesn't conform to a genre...it's like opening a precious new gift whenever she drops anything. Depending on how much you enjoy her, you can find a lot of her old stuff that is incredible as well. She was on the voice for a blink of an eye, and yesterday she had her first U.S. show in Los Angeles! You are so fortunate Nicole to experience all this for the first time..and I am here for it! Let's goooo!!!

I see this song not as a duet, rather it is two souls in the same space singing the same song each has a vague awareness that the other is there, but they are both so wrapped in their chalk outlines that neither can connect with each other.
Chalk outlines is the state of being cut off from the outside world mentally/emotionally through the use of prescribed medications, to alleviate their various conditions.
Your surprise gave it an eerie ghostly choir to my ears, like they were being observed by higher powers...

You should definitely check out How to be Me (Live) by Ren and Chinchilla! Of note: much like Hi Ren - some of the early notes sound off key but they are intentionally discordant!
They're talking about antidepressants and how counterproductive they can be particularly for extended use, "don't cry because there's a pill for everything", "setraline and a sip of seratonin" also antidepressants make you stop feeling everything pretty much. Walking around as a "floating chalk outline" there but empty. Such a beautiful day but take it just in case is like when you're finally having an ok day/time in general, but are told to take them anyway "just in case" because you can spiral rapidly and abruptly even if it was a good day. The shame is you'll no longer feel the joy of the good day either. It's all just numbed.
And the irony is this emptiness can drive people to substance abuse to feel something, so yeah there's an element of addiction in here possibly, but the "new habit" isn't necessarily drugs, there can be all sorts of new habits, both bad and good that can be distraction enough for a bit.

and ok, i'm gonna say it: the Song Penitence is him with beautiful Poetism spoken with the flows of Heaven. Its a sad one though.
Could I suggest you add Ren and Chinchilla performing Sexual Healing live to your list. It's a good introduction to Ren and friends busking which is a whole rabbit hole on its own.
I'm often suspicious of reactors who join the Ren party late because you can often tell they're just here for the likes. But in a very short time you've distinguished yourself as one of my favourite reactors. Your reactions are genuine, emotional, and personal, and you add to the conversation with meaningul analysis and commentary. So glad to have you as part of our little (and by little I mean enormous) community!
The best musical “siblings”. Ren has called her his sister from another mister and a female version of himself due to their similar approach to music. For me I think it shows in the fact that they both have that something special that draws you in and demands attention. To see it fully for Chinchilla, check out her live version of Fingers.
This song always reminds me that one of the (many) things that makes Ren so great is his ability to know exactly when to be complex, keep it simple, or even use silence to get his message across. He isn’t flexing his guitar skills in this, just playing exactly what is needed with that beautiful guitar tone. And my favourite line in this is so simple, totally devoid of all the clever metaphors that he is so good at using, but it hits soooo hard: “I’m scared of being okay cause all things change”. I think anyone who has been through any struggles can relate to that feeling of not trusting that anything good will last. You can’t just enjoy it because you’re busy worrying about how long it will last and the feeling that will come when it’s gone. And then good days just make the darkness feel so much worse because you remember the light that’s gone… Ren is so special. He keeps being so relatable that it reminds us that we’re not alone. And we will always make room for more RENegades down the Ren rabbit hole cause we all need his light in the darkness 🐰🕳️
If you want more emotional singing from Ren, please check out one of my personal favourites: Crutch feat. Bibi. It’s an older song from before he was finally correctly diagnosed with Lyme disease and was written after a breakdown following multiple emergency trips to the hospital. It is heart wrenching and beautiful. And very different from everything else in his catalogue.
I had to pause and grab the headphones to get the full effect of your "Surprise". It makes all the difference.
Ren has such a deep catalogue to dive into, with such variety to match. Chinchilla is also well worth exploring.

Thanks for sharing about your husband’s sobriety. My wife stopped drinking a year and a half ago after years of pretty much non-stop drinking. Is everything perfect? No. But it’s real. I can finally see the real her, messy but perfect after 12 years.
It's not actually about addiction at all. It's about the dangers of being prescribed SSRIs for depression and how they make you so numb to everything that they make you feel like a chalk outline of yourself. They don't actually make you feel better they just shut off and block the chemicals in your body that feel emotions so you "feel better" by not feeling anything at all. Ren is very outspoken about the dangers of prescription drugs, especially for mental health issues.
Hello Nicole, great reaction, love your reactions! In this case it is not so much about addiction. While Ren was misdiagnosed for 7 years, doctors treated him against bipolar disorder etc. They gave him pills, which did even more damage. He descibes that in "Sick Boi" and "Troubles". It added to his desperation and distrust in the health system. They didn't take him serious, said this all had to be a "trauma response" for things, he experienced during his childhood, while he really was suffering from lyme disease. He had to do his own research and finally found a doctor in Brussels, who diagnosed him correctly. After 7 years suffering. Really heartbreaking. After his stem cell treatments, last one in Canada, he got better, but right now he suffers a backlash and will have to return to treatment in Canada.... 😢 Btw, I suppose, Chinchilla has her own history. Check her out, she is great!

The song is more about mental health medication, and how it makes you feel dead inside, like a chalk outline around a dead body. Chinchilla’s first line “Sertraline and a sip of serotonin” gets me every time (sertraline is know as Zoloft in the US).
Another great reaction, Ren does everything on purpose including his locations, just like in violets tale where the reverb changes in each area he goes to.
Chinchilla is just amazing, another incredible talent. They refer to each other as musical siblings.

I can't remember which reactor pointed this out (I would love to toss some respect his way), but Chinchilla isn't mic'ed. Her voice is powerful enough to use Ren's lapel mic. And whoever was involved in the choreography if where she stands, moves closer to him so her voice strength grows. The whole thing is more interesting watching it they way.

This is about psychiatric medications in my take. The meds one is given that either don't work, quit working or make things worse. It can be hell. Now for fun Ren you'd like Love Music part 1.
Ren is not in general against medications. I believe he is describing how it might feel being depressed and taking medication against it, how they might make you feel empty and dead inside but you are still scared of the consequences of not taking them.
@@ancltube i know, I have pretty much the same attitude, while I'm currently medication free i was on them for years. I know of one, maybe two psych meds from personal experience I would never touch again and one that did what i was told it would and did it well with zero side effects.
One of the things I have really loved is when the reactor watches the studio version then the live version. Seeing how differently those are presented side by side brings a new level of respect for Ren.

I don’t think this song is about addiction, rather about living with mental health issues. But there is no wrong interpretation, everyone gets what they need from music.

I believe it is more specifically about the good and bad consequenses of taking antidepressants and similar pills and how they can make you feel empty and dead inside, and the fear of stop taking them, even though you might want to when having a good day, because you are afraid that you will feel worse again. But I have heard many connecting it to addiction as well and as with many of Rens songs, and music in general, there are many ways to interpret the meaning.
