Here’s for people who need to get off RUclips and need the facts right away. (Random I know but I had to..). 1:Chinchillas eat their own poop. 2:Male Chinchillas clean their male parts, and it extends- 3:Chinchillas have stink glands and can release a smell. 4:Chinchillas can sleep in very weird positions, legs in the air, side, back, standing up, etc. 5:Chinchillas can do something called “popcorning”, it’s when they have a lot of energy and work it off, or they’re just happy.
Lol I knew all this already, I got WallE and Eve on my birthday in august, and the first night I almost died laughing when I saw WallE cleaning his bits
I’d always heard of people getting such a fright from their chinchillas looking like they are dead. Then it happened to me 😭 it’s so scary 😂 And the chinchilla wakes up and looks at you like you’re crazy
Same I poked my chin because I thought she was dead...she was just sleeping and she barked at me when she woke up lol i still kind of feel bad for scaring her
The heart attack position is the perfect name for that sleeping position. One of mine likes to sleep on her side half the time until her sister pokes her and wakes her up. I prefer the happy idea for popcorning too, one of them does it whenever there’s a new toy or she gets a treat. The other has only started doing it now I let them loose in the bathroom, she seems to like it in there. Definitely the more fun explanation!
I own my chinchilla for almost 3 years already it will make 3 years next month, and when I got my chinchilla since I never saw one neither took care of one the heart position scared me. One day she was laid down on the ground of the cage sleeping and when I returned home as always I came to greet her, when I saw her like that I thought she was dead. I opened the cage calling her name and no reaction, I grabbed her and started to cry and calling desperately for her and in the mean time she woke up startled staring at me surprised, after that episode she never slept again like that. I love her so much and she is everything to me.
It's really scary when they sleep on their sides, no matter how many times I see it I always panic thinking that they are not okay. When I check on them, they get up and look really annoyed with me for disturbing their sleep.
I had a chinchilla yrs ago and never had no problem w/ it sleeping weird. I'll never forget cause I got it at a small pet store and i left her at home one day and when we returned home i went in the bedroom right away to see her and it wasn't just her anymore. Here she had, had a baby. Apparently I got her from the pet store when she was pregnant. They did just give her to me so maybe they knew. Who knows. Pretty cool though I think.
One thing I learned is that chinchillas are prone to getting cysts below the surface of the skin in their old age. My baby girl had to be put down around age 14 because she kept getting them and was in so much pain to the point she couldn't move and sometimes they popped and became an open wound. I first found out when I picked her up and felt the wound on her belly. We cleaned it up, shaved the fur around it, and kept it clean and it healed very well, but it kept happening and eventually she got one on her neck that affected her breathing. We decided to put her down after that. It's very sad to think about but I think it's important to know and look out for as they approach old age.
I remember the first time I saw my chinchilla giving himself the gawk gawk 3000 I was so confused. I just walked away and give him his “private time”. 🤣🤣🤣
Heart attack position is so accurate! I blow in my 2 boys too, sometimes it's hard to see them breathing due to the fur position and it instantly makes me panic! I've kept Chinnies for over 20 years and it still makes me stress almost everytime.
Number 6: Chinchillas can teleport when they feel like it. At least mine can lol. I had him out in the living room and I went into the bathroom, closed the door *looking at the floor to see if he was coming* and I turn around and he's in the bathroom with me

I love all these bunny stories, and I think all bunnies are beautiful. It does not matter their breed. Bunnies are there to be loved and taken care of. I have a New Zealand White, which grows to be quite large. She will grow to be as big as a tomcat, and that is a big bunny. The thing is, the bigger she gets the more beautiful she looks. I just love my bunny, and she loves me. What more could I want
My Moe always sleeps on his side and always have, he's super hard to wake up and is a little blind lol.. used to scare me so much when i first got him, now we're used to it!
Guess I’m not getting a male chinchilla anytime soon after seeing this.. I noticed chinchillas have some things in common with mice Mice also eat their poop and popcorn
What if the vet told you your male chinchilla doesn't have hair problems in the "area" but rather because he just has a problem with playing with himself
Hi, no not necessarily🙂 Chinchillas who are stretched out on their side and the ambient temperature in the room is healthy, so less than 20ºC/ 68ºF are generally just super relaxed, chinchillas often do this when they feel very secure and relaxed in their environment. If, however, your chinchilla is doing this after playtime, it is exhausted, and it’s best to cut back on the time you have them out. If it is warmer than 22°c /72°F in their environment, they are too warm, and you need to cool them down ASAP. When your chinchilla is sleeping on their side it's really important just to check the temp of the room isn't too hot for them . Hope this helps 🙂
should of mentioned when the get defensive they can pee on from four feet away. Did this to my mom she (my Chinchilla) did not like her (My mom) at all lol. Plus i have a branch stand in her enclosure she would fall asleep and fall off all the time.
@@sweetdreamz9282 So sorry to hear she is unhappy, defensive? are they a pair? sometimes that matters. She's like, You aren't my Man ;-) Have You had both same amount of time? Some chins don't want You to reach in their cage but if they are out in their free space, the bathroom or where ever You get them out to - then they are friendly cuz You aren't invading their space. ?? Any of that? or she is just neurotic? ;-) I hope not. That would be too sad. HUGS & Merry Christmas!!!
@@PinkLady54 they don’t fight and snuggle a lot. However the female isn’t pregnant and they don’t seem to be breeding which I don’t really want to happen anyway. I think one of them might be neutered of something.. We bought them from a lady who rescued them but she says they aren’t neutered. They both get taken out the same amount of time. She is just timid compared to my male.
Hi some of my chinchillas like the one in this video I have bred and have handled them every day since they were born so they are quite used to being handled. I am really lucky that some of my other chinchillas have really calm temperaments and don't mind being handled. But it does take time and patience for chinchillas to be comfortable with handling. I do have a video on how to help tame a chinchilla which goes through some of the techniques I use to get a chinchilla used to me. I have a few chinchillas that do not like being handled at all, for those chinchillas I interact with them during their playtime, instead of handling them I let them come to me , they will often jump on my lap but I know I would never be able to pick them up and handle them the way I do with my other chinchillas, I just have to respect that 🙂
@@AllysAnimalAntics thanks so much for your detailed advice and helpful videos! I really hope that my chinchilla will eventually learn to enjoy being held. He has come from a pet store where I think he was slightly traumatized and now he is about 7 months old after living with me for 3 months. He has sat in my hand on only a couple of occassions and not for long. I do hope I will be able to tame him even more and get used to relaxing in my hand. Thank you again and love your videos!
My chinchillas do the second thing but our vet told us that they were both girls so when we first saw it we were really confused so we’re going to take them back because I read somewhere that it’s hard to sex them when they are young - hopefully we can find out this time
Yeah sounds like you may have a boy. Females do clean down there as well, but it's super obvious when it's a boy , it's a sight to behold 😳 Good idea to take them back to the vet to confirm it though. I also have a video on how to sex chinchillas which may help you a bit, but if you're not confident in doing it the vet should be able to tell you really easily.
As for the No.2 necessity of males, we male owners would not in-the-least be surprised, taken-aback or offended but rather, naturally understanding of it all. Care to guess WHY? Those whiskers really do whisk one. More than just for feeling, I believe they are static-electrical sensors of some sort, by which means they gather vital sensations about their environment. _ : _
Thanks for your comment, there is no need to be concerned I only had a cold and chinchillas can't catch the cold virus . The only two things that are contagious to them really are streptococcus (strep throat) and conjunctivitis (pink eye). It's always good to be cautious though, if I ever have a chesty cough that could be bacterial I don't handle them... But in this instance I just had a common cold so no chance of my chinchilla catching it 🙂
My chinchilla doesn’t clean himself or at-least I haven’t seen him do it. So how would I personally clean him? Even though I don’t think he’s Been personally cleaned in his whole life so he is probably ok but should I still know how to clean him ???
You don't really need yo clean him as such, he probably does it when you are not around. However males do need to be checked for hair ring regularly . There are a few good vids on youtube showing how to check for hair ring, it can be tricky if your chinchilla doesn't like being held . But as long as he doesn't haveva hair ring you don't have to clean him down there at all. Hope this helps🙂
It is best to get two as they are very social, however most breeders would say that if you give a single chinchilla enough attention they can do well on their own .
I love when they're in a strange (to them) environment (e.g., a poop free area); their little whiskers twitter about. They can't see for shite, poor devils. They do eat it though.
Saros is beautiful. My chinchillas did some of these things. I had both male and female chinchillas. Makes me miss my chinchillas and degus very much. RIP.
Wooden hanging toys with wood such as apple, hazel, kiln dried pine are fine, things like natural loofah willow sticks and coconut husks are also okay. I did do a video on safe toys but I deleted it because I had changed my opinion on one of the toys featured. Maybe I will do another video in the future to show the types of toys I use 🙂
When I catch my chinchilla sleeping on his side it really does feel like he gives me a heart attack and then I yell his name and it scares him awake and I feel so bad 😅😭😭
Thank you for this informative and precious video! They are such beautiful little creatures and Should be given the best of care, so videos like your help owners understand their behaviors. 👍😊 QUESTION...Can they live alone?
I thought chincillas are more activ in the night and not in the morning...where you stay, there is light from outside, so I suppose, that it is not night or evening...strange
Ohh thanks for sharing these facts I have to say that they are absolutely adorable and I would love to have one as part of my family But think my cat would fall out with me and sulk Do they bite you much and do they need to have there nails cut please?
yes it's normal, he's probably doing it, just at night when your not watching. Just make sure you do a hair ring check on him every so often, once a month is a good guide.
You can buy a wire carry cage, similar to show cages, you can line it with fleece if you don't like your chinchillas feet having contact with the wire. Or if you can monitor them then a plastic pet carrier would be fine you just have to make sure they don't chew the plastic. If you can't monitor them avoid plastic and go for a wire cage. Hope this makes sense
I used the small-med dog carrier that is plastic with wire door to transport to vet or Moms for vacation & had a large towel folded for the bottom to be comfy. Ally is right about chewing but my grrrls were too stressed about the whole business to chew plastic ?? They didn't really chew plastic except the corner guards in the bathroom!! ;-) I also I put in toys they liked, plenty of hay & hardwood sticks, I dried in oven to kill bacteria, with bark still on; they adored chewing off the bark so maybe that kept them happy enough for the few days we were gone each time. Also to train them to like travel I smashed their raisins in probiotic powder & tore them in itty bitty bitty pieces; when ever they got in kennel &/or the car stopped - they got a fragment of raisin. That did the trick ;-) plus when I would clean their house I would do the same routine with kennel & raisin. I would also cover the whole kennel, door & all with a big towel to keep them relaxed as possible. They both lived over 20 yrs so I think it worked :-)
Hi, the way I try to bond with my chinchillas is to first just get the chinchilla used to being around you, by sitting next to their cage and just talking to them. After you have done that for a while you can try putting your hand in the cage. Don't try touching your chinchilla when you do this, chinchillas are naturally inquisitive and will likely come to you to in investigate your hand, just keep still this will stop them from feeling scared. Once they are used to and comfortable with your hand being in their cage you can try and pet them . Also offer a hay based treat so they associate you with a positive experience. If you have your chinchilla out of the cage for playtime sit with them, the more time you spend with them the more comfortable your chinchilla will be around you. I have done a video previously on tips on how to tame a chinchilla which you may find helpfull. Hope this helps 🙂
I had a feeling you hand raised that baby for how used to you it is. I kept thinking is she going to put it down because she'll have to 🙂 You both calmly made it all the way through. ❤ Great video!

Chinchilla are not members of the Rabbit family. Chinchilla is a species on its own.
Life advice: Never kiss a chinchilla. Gotcha! 👍🏽😂
hahahahaha But how can You not!?!?! you just kiss their forehead or back!! ;-)
Pommie bears I kiss mine she’s ok with it
My Moe always sleeps on his side and always have, he's super hard to wake up and is a little blind lol.. used to scare me so much when i first got him, now we're used to it!
if you guys dont understand what she means by the "p word" she meant- there peanut..yea ye
Chinchilla poop is not that gross . It’s just grass oats and other stuff.
Yep - Rabbits do this, too. Also, like Rabbits, Chinchillas can live 10 to 20 years, so they are a commitment, just like a Dog or Cat.
Guess I’m not getting a male chinchilla anytime soon after seeing this..
I noticed chinchillas have some things in common with mice
Mice also eat their poop and popcorn
I'm with You!!! Grrrl chinnies only!! ;-)
Well, based on that, I think I'd go with a female chinchilla...
What if the vet told you your male chinchilla doesn't have hair problems in the "area" but rather because he just has a problem with playing with himself
So cute! Also I love your accent
So is it bad if your chinchilla all most always sleeps on it's side??
Hi, no not necessarily🙂
Chinchillas who are stretched out on their side and the ambient temperature in the room is healthy, so less than 20ºC/ 68ºF are generally just super relaxed, chinchillas often do this when they feel very secure and relaxed in their environment.
Plus i have a branch stand in her enclosure she would fall asleep and fall off all the time.
javi691us yeah that’s females only though
really??? only grrrls pee at You like that?? I only had grrrls cuz they are more genteel ;-)
@@PinkLady54 actually in my experience males are usually more friendly. My female is scared very easily and bites. Complete opposite of my male.
@@sweetdreamz9282 So sorry to hear she is unhappy, defensive? are they a pair? sometimes that matters. She's like, You aren't my Man ;-)
Have You had both same amount of time?
How do you get your chin comfortable enough to sit in your hand so calmly??
Wow
Im so excited, I'm getting two male chins tommorow and wanted to see if they did anything weird lmao thx
You should have saved number 1 for Number 2.
Don't worry. You sound great! :-)
Popcorning and running up to a wall, leaping up, and kicking off the wall in the other direction.
Thanks for your help 😂
As for the No.2 necessity of males, we male owners would not in-the-least be surprised, taken-aback or offended but rather, naturally understanding of it all. Care to guess WHY?
Those whiskers really do whisk one. More than just for feeling, I believe they are static-electrical sensors of some sort, by which means they gather vital sensations about their environment.
_ : _
Who else thinks the eating poop should have been number 2? LOLOLOL 💩🤔😊
You should be careful if you are sick. The little baby can also get sick...
But in this instance I just had a common cold so no chance of my chinchilla catching it 🙂
I still would be careful. You can never know for sure what did you get.... www.sciencedirect.com/topics/medicine-and-dentistry/influenza-a
My chinchilla doesn’t clean himself or at-least I haven’t seen him do it.
I call the popcorning the “zoomies”
Ferrets also do it!😂
Im getting a chinchilla and i have herd you have to get two but I'm only aloud to get one, is that ok cos idrk
It is best to get two as they are very social, however most breeders would say that if you give a single chinchilla enough attention they can do well on their own .
Where's the bright yellow chinchilla with red/black spots
I love when they're in a strange (to them) environment (e.g., a poop free area); their little whiskers twitter about. They can't see for shite, poor devils.
They do eat it though.
Saros is beautiful. My chinchillas did some of these things. I had both male and female chinchillas.
Makes me miss my chinchillas and degus very much. RIP.
Your little guy is so docile and cute! Perfect for the lenses.
I am getting a chinchilla on Friday I had one before but my question is what kind of toys are safe for them to with?
Wooden hanging toys with wood such as apple, hazel, kiln dried pine are fine, things like natural loofah willow sticks and coconut husks are also okay. I did do a video on safe toys but I deleted it because I had changed my opinion on one of the toys featured. Maybe I will do another video in the future to show the types of toys I use 🙂
Also avoid toys the rope, string, bells and plastic as these are not safe for chinchillas.
I’m getting a chinchilla in a month and I’m so excited!
Did you get it yet? 😆
Me too!!!
my chin can sleep on two legs with his eyes open it's so weird.
0:54 I laughed so hard 😂😂
When my chinchilla cleaned its man bits for the first time I was so confused. I thought he got ahold of gum some how 😂😂😂
When I catch my chinchilla sleeping on his side it really does feel like he gives me a heart attack and then I yell his name and it scares him awake and I feel so bad 😅😭😭
Oh my . Look how cute the babies are !
Ohh thanks for sharing these facts
I have to say that they are absolutely adorable and I would love to have one as part of my family
But think my cat would fall out with me and sulk
Do they bite you much and do they need to have there nails cut please?
They can bite but in my experience they rarely do. No nail clipping isn't required, they are actually really low maintenance in that respect.
@@AllysAnimalAntics Ohhh thank you so much for replying so quickly
🙏😘🙏
Hope you had a lovely Christmas with your extended family
Why the main things getting bleeped out??
RUclips has some funny rules about what words you can use. My video may have got age restricted or demonitised if I had kept it in.
Your chin is super cute!! I’m like, 99% sure I’m getting one :D
my chinchilla is about seven months old and i haven’t seen him clean himself. is that normal
yes it's normal, he's probably doing it, just at night when your not watching. Just make sure you do a hair ring check on him every so often, once a month is a good guide.
Ally, thanks for your vids a lot. But I can't get myself from guessing your accent. I'm russian so it's a bit difficult for me, are you australian?
Hi I'm from the UK , I am originally from a county called Essex in the UK 🙂
@@AllysAnimalAntics thank you for answering, got it :)
Just in case of an emergency..what type carrier should I buy ..in order to carry my Chinchilla with me
You can buy a wire carry cage, similar to show cages, you can line it with fleece if you don't like your chinchillas feet having contact with the wire.
Glad I saw this video. Was planning to get a chinchilla. But not anymore tho
Everything in this video was new info to me. TYVM!
Can't people understand that the weirdness of animals makes them unsuitable to be pets?
How should you bond with your chin
Got it i will watch the video when I get the chance and by the way you should have more subscribers you are very helpful 😂 thanks.
I enjoyed your video. Very informative. Thankyou. 🙂❤
I had a feeling you hand raised that baby for how used to you it is. I kept thinking is she going to put it down because she'll have to 🙂 You both calmly made it all the way through. ❤ Great video!
You never told us how many we'll need, to make a sweet coat.
А про струю самок не рассказали. Когда пускает во врага или от страха
How long do Chinchilla Live.....soooo soft.....
They can live from 10-20 years
