      You need to add a puppy to that list. A well bonded chin is kind of a loving and demanding creature. Our male chin will physically "hug" us when we reach in his cage. He often jumps out and on to our shoulder or head. He will turn nearly upside down for scritches. He will spread his paws like Superman or Titanic when you scratch his belly. Eyes closed and in heaven.

    We had one chinchilla that was a boy and he was young when we got him. He bonded in the car with me frankly. He rode home in his hammock while staring at me. It was fun. Chin 2 was a fluke - a friend of the wife asked us if we could take a chin rescue. His name was Charles. We brought "him" home and basically did your initial steps. This chin was raise rough with little kids and lots of rough handling. "He" groomed HARD and aggressive and was just a "rough" creature. One day, I decided to check out the boy bits to make sure that things were in place and there were no hair tangles and much to our surprise - Charlie was a "SHE"! The former owner had no idea. It took about 6 months of careful bonding to get "her" to become a real chinchilla. She never had a house, never had shelves, never had levels or things to chew. It's fun to watch them learn and grow. She is an absolute MULCHING machine. The boy chin had a saucer wheel and is a runner. They're so very different animals. Girl chin knows how to groom her human now without pain. I had to bark at her several times when she bit too hard.

    I had a hamster that I was feeding by hand. The first time it bit the blood out of me. I was startled, jumped, and said, "Ouch!" The second time I fed her she bit again, but much softer. I jumped, but didn't yell. The third time she put her teeth on me but didn't bite. She was so good. She never bit me again. I fed her all the time by hand and she would take the food, even the ones between my fingers without ever hurting me. That was almost 20 years ago.

    I got recommended this video after watching my own chinchilla video. I stopped at 1:57 because that metal duct work hide hole is chefs kiss brilliant! I already use scraps of wood, washers and screws to create new habitats, but that metal pipe is very, very choice. I will be doing this this weekend. I rarely see anything but wood in cages. Young lady, that is the tip of the year for us. I will make another comment about my chinchilla bonding experience.

    Thanks for the video! I just adopted a chinchilla pair from our local shelter and slowly trying out this method but they seem quite desinterested - I assume in part because they're already older (being 6 and 7) and therefore building trust is harder. I hope given it some time they get more comfortable - how do I best tell if they're comfortable though? The two so far mostly sit completely still for the most part - is that because they're attentive and alert?
    Thanks again for the awesome video!

    I completely did the complete opposite of this and now I think my Chinchilla doesn't like me very much and I feel like an absolute fool. Is there any possible way I can redeem this? I got my 1 year old from a friend who always had him so calm and tame and would sleep in your arms and any strangers arms. He would let you pet him during the day and was generally very relaxed and calm. However, she had to move and could no longer look after him so I took him in as he is such a sweet boy. However, his personality drastically changed when I got him and he no longer likes pets and being held and always tries to escape and is very skittish and did a 180. I'm trying to be patient with him but I think I had the prior knowledge of him blinded me from proper training in a new environment and now I'm worried I did irreversible damage to him both in trust and his personality now. Do you have any tips and tricks? Or can I start over by following these steps?

    • @ChinVillain

We recently got another set of Twins Chinchillas with another cage. After Quarentining them we are putting the cages side by side with 5 inches between them so he has friends. I don't want to rush it though, but we figured he'd benefit from some more friends. 😊

I got my chinchilla few days ago and she is very tamed and let's me pet her, but she is just 4 months old and she was stressing out today when we had play time because she got under my desk and we had to move a lot of stuff to get her out. I didn't know what to do next, like what's the next step if she isn't comfortable playing in my room and now I know that we are gonna have play time in my small bathroom for just 15-20min until she is fully comfortable with me.😊

    long comment incoming:
    i've been thinking about getting a couple of chinchillas (i heard they're better in pairs or even groups since they're social animals) and dedicating a whole room to their habitat, so they'd be semi-free roam, but in an enclosed, safe environment. my plan was to have their cages (or cage? would it be healthier to keep them together or give them their own separate spaces?) open at all times with a small ladder up to them so they'd have a safe place to return to if they're scared or need transporting, but basically have a full room to themselves to explore and exist in (with a gate to close off the room's door when i would come in). i was thinking i'd scatter dust on the floor throughout the room (should the floor itself be tile, wood, carpet or some other material?) and place logs and rocks and other more natural things in there to simulate their wild habitat, as well as some man-made structures for like, climbing and hiding and such. maybe even grow some vegetation that they'd eat from their natural environment and put it in there. in addition to the dust on the floor, i'd offer large dust baths in the room, too, one for each chinchilla, as well as two wood chip boxes for basically bathrooms (i've heard that wood shavings is what you use for that?); hopefully "toilet train" them in a sense, at least for urinating. offer water and food (hay and also chinchilla-food pellets) in ways they'd find it in nature to keep them engaged. i'd also keep the room dimly lit, with sheer curtains over the window to keep direct sunlight from entering, but still light enough to see and navigate. of course, keep the room cool (but not cold). all of this so they'd have stimulation (at their own pace and desire) and stay mentally and physically healthy, and give them ample room to live happily and fully. i'd go through the process of this adjustment and trust-training with them and spend time with them everyday bonding with them and giving them my love, but mostly leave them alone, save for feeding times and cleaning.
    how does this sound, to all u chinchilla owners out there? a good plan or bad? or does it need adjustments? any and all feedback would be very appreciated!

    What would you or anyone else that has chinchillas recommend for when a chinchilla is curious and coming up to me after just one day? I just got my baby chinchilla yesterday, who is already my pride and joy, and she seems to already be coming up to me quite often and not really being scared of me. Should I still just leave her in a dark room alone for a while? Should I not interact physically yet and continue to talk to her through the cage? Should I try to do the still hand method that I've been doing before? I'm a brand new chinchilla owner, so I want to be the best owner for my new little chinchilla. I've also been very nervous though, because this is my first chinchilla. I don't want to scare her at all or cause her to not want me around her. Any tips are welcomed and extremely appreciated

    hello, very useful video ! i am going to start working with your advices with my chinchillas, but i just have one question : is it not dangerous to pick them up by the tail even for emergencies ? i ask because i was told it was 1. bad for their spine and 2. it may kind of fall off like for a degu, as a defense mechanism against predators ? but unlike lizards it doesn’t grow back :0 it happened to one of my degu when i was 7 yo (27 now) and me and my family didn’t know 😭 sorry if it sounds silly i may be misinformed. ;; w ;; thank you for your time. ☺️💛

    • @ChinVillain
      @ChinVillain  2 года назад +1

      The safest way to pick up a chinchilla is by the base of their tail. Here is a website that explains all of the precautions and guidelines of handling chinchillas. www.rdzcranch.com/proper-handling.html
      1. Holding them by the tail is NOT bad for their spine as long as your are holding them correctly - "The vertebrae by the base of the tail, closest to the body are thickened and quite strong. The spinal cord of mammals terminates at the lumbar vertebrae above where their hips are located, so at the tail you do not risk spinal cord damage." (quoted from the link above)
      Holding them by the tail is NOT bad for their spine as long as your are holding them correctly. However, it is dangerous if you grab them around their abdomen - "When a chinchilla is squeezed around the rib cage, the shoulder blades are pressed against the spinal cord. This can cause nerves to be severed or severely damaged and can even lead to spinal cord compression and damage." (quoted from the link above)
      2. "When you grasp a tail, the chinchilla cannot slip the tail or get away. This often triggers a prey response to the tail grab. It is a high pitched scream accompanied by rapid protrusion from the anus of a white scent gland. The scent gland gives off a burnt almond or vitamin smell. The scream accompanied by this glandular secretion is meant as a second form of defensive escape to deter predators. This reaction does NOT mean the animal is in pain or being harmed.(quoted from the link above)

    Hi, i am working at a petshop and there is a male chincihilla that doesnt get along with the other chins. He seems to like me and i decided to take him home. From the first day i tried to socialize with him, he jumped on my hands and he seems comfortable being on me. Still he doest let me pet him. Do you think this good or normal? Please let me know cause i want to do the best for my little bun :-)

    • @ChinVillain
      @ChinVillain  2 года назад

      Every chinchilla is different. It sounds like he may still be adjusting to his new environment and needs time to build a trusting bond with you. However, he also may just not enjoy being pet which many chinchillas do not as well. I have a few that do not like interaction.

    My chin drew blood from my finger the other day and it frightened me but I also took in the account the only interaction he’s had with my fingers is food! So dummy me huh?

    Hey so Im wanting to get a chinchilla and have been looking into it but I have allergies to most dogs and cats so I was wondering if you think a chinchilla could trigger allergies? Thanks

    • @sarahware804
      @sarahware804 2 года назад +1

      The chinchilla will not trigger allergies however the Alfalfa hay and other types of hay they eat is really bad for allergies of any kind.

    It is very rough for me to care for my chinchilla… I took her home from school for the break, and she’s lived her life in a loud classroom and has never had the proper care. It’s just difficult for me to care for her…

    How many days should I do the hand resting in Cage

    • @ChinVillain
      @ChinVillain  2 года назад +1

      I can't tell you exact time limits because each chinchilla will be different. However, when you are resting your hand in the cage and they are approaching your hand, try seeing if you can touch their bodies and if they run away, you know that they are not ready. You just need to experiment and see when they are ready.

    Im thinking about getting a 10 week or a 3 month old chinchilla and I would like to know if 3 months old is old enough to have playtime😁

    • @ChinVillain
      @ChinVillain  2 года назад +2

      They should not be in playtime until they are 6 months or older. They have a harder time regulating their body temperature when they are that young and chinchillas are already very susceptible to heat stroke so it is risky. I would suggest waiting.

Ok the perfume type sent makes them want to eat you. / wash hands before interacting with them. Fragrance on your hands make them smell like flowers 💐

    I was going to get a chinchilla but I decided I didn’t quite have the space and I thought it would be unfair to buy one which can live for so long when I don’t even have my own place so I’ve decided on 3 gerbils instead who im going to call tigger,lumpy, and piglet 🥹
