So im petting my classes chinchilla (we are at my house for winter break btw) and he's making the squeak like the ones with the baby when I pet him but he does it like twice then stops and goes back to running around
Awww, I remember when my Chin was a baby. She passed from natural causes while still young and left her mother heart broken and alone. After about over a year, we got a second chinchilla because we noticed that the mother would cry and she just seemed lonely. The new chinchilla accidentally got into the mother's cage and we were terrified. They nudged noses and began to jump and run around. They weren't fighting, they were celebrating. They stood side by side and would nudge noses, the mother showed the new chinchilla where the food and the water and the dust bath was. The new chinchilla was so scared to jump up the shelves so she would watch the mother jump back and forth. Its been a year and it's like they knew each other there whole lives. The mothers name is Katana, her daughter's name was Shiek, and the new chin is named Sheva.
blu uwu both of mine are.. the noises they most often make are the ones she listed as the comfortable baby feeding.. 😂 now i have heard one of them bark before but that was because one of my cat’s tends to be very curious so much so the other cats even sometimes growl at her because she just is so needy when it comes to being around other animals.. and my smallest chinchilla is kinda feisty towards her and will push her and bark at her 😂

I remember when my male chinchilla met his female partner for the first time and they were like in the notebook. Very long story short (it’s too romantic and extremely long, so if anyone wants to hear it I’ll write it down later). They lived together for 5-6 years and loved each other to death. And when the girl was about to leave us, mom held both of them while the guy was laying on top of the girl. Time went by and later she passed peacefully. He looked up at my mom like “it’s over now”. And when he later got back in the cage I could hear that screaming sound. I even woke up hearing it so he got to sleep with me instead. (Which he always have loved to do) It truly is heartbreaking. Good thing is he have found out we have a dog in the house too and now thinks he is her baby and want to be like her. Curl up like a dog while sleeping in a dog bed, wear a leash (not recommended at all, but if he is happy I’m happy), he have also barked like a dog, does things on commando, plays with my dog, he literally does everything! The only thing he doesn’t do as a dog is spinning like a cat while being cuddled (which he have done ever since I rescued him). So when people tell me to “get the rat out of here” I’m looking them dead in the eye and say “buy glasses, this is a dog” or “that’s very rude, he identifies as a dog”
That's a great story. What a tough time for everyone. Thanks for sharing. I take in guinea pigs who need a home, not to adopt out but to give them a home for the rest of their lives. When I get them, they are often half way or more through their life spans already, so I have had to say goodbye many times. When a pig dies, the others are very pragmatic about it. Nothing like what you described here... they will sniff the dead pen-pal, stand on them, then usually pull the hair a little bit. That seems to be the final test. They then just ignore the body, except in one case where one died a very sudden death over 24 hours, I had her put to sleep in the evening after finding her that way during the previous evening, just a sudden, inexplicable bout of fatal diarrhea where the day before she was just fine. In that case the other pigs stayed as far away from the body as possible when I presented it to them upon returning to the vet. Wouldn't go near her body.
omar guillermo pacheco cuba You should pet one. As awful as it is that they’ve been hunted for fur, even to one species going extinct, it’s VERY OBVIOUS why someone would do that if you feel one. There’s nothing in the world closer to what you think clouds feel like as a child
My chin sometimes wakes up like he's having a nightmare and alarm cries. It's weird because he's a really deep sleeper, so I don't think it's something he hears.
Yeah mine too. I always think it's just him making random sound cuz it happens mostly during the day time when he's sleeping. I find it funny and cute and I tend to call his name when I hear him doing that, then he'll stop lol...
Mines has been doing this recently in the daytime over the slightest noise. Its seems as italways happend when she is in a deep sleep, jumps and screams and it scared dh outta us. I still run to her cage at times.
My new chinchilla alarm calls, and I've never heard it before. It was quite alarming. Last night I think the sewing machine set him off. Now you have enlightened me- it could sound like a predator!
This brings back so many memories. My chin, Peanutbutter, had a personality like no other. He was like a sassy old man. He didn’t care too much for kids. Because of that, we didn’t get along too well I gotta say😂. He would also bark and chase me around the the house. I’m sure he got a kick out of making a human run around. Thank God that I was able to rebuild our bond during his last weeks. He was a wonderful friend.
The crying sound is indeed awful. One of my chinchillas is extremely timid, and bolts at just about anything. Once or twice she's hurt herself doing it. Last year I had to move, which made things worse, and she mostly just hides now. I wish I could regain her trust after the move.
give it time I am sure she will come around, try sitting by her cage and just talk to her, after a while put your hand in the cage and keep it still. Chinchillas are naturally inquisitive so she might come over. If she does just keep still this way she will not perceive you as a danger. After a while try offering her a treat so she associates you with something nice, it sometimes works with me but it takes time, some chinchillas will always be on the timid side though.
It takes a lot of time. I used to be able to pet and stroke my male, but he had to have an operation at the vet, and ever since he's been frightened and timid. He doesn't even like me putting my hands near him. That said, he's been coming around lately. He didn't take treats or sticks off me, but he's started doing that, so it's just a matter of baby steps. I even got a sleeping bag out and slept by his cage after the operation, to make sure he was okay. You have to remember that they're still prey animals, hunted by almost everything in the wild, including the most dangerous predators of all - us.
Wow, I never knew hiccups sounded like that! My chinchilla (her name is Hermione) will make that sound at night sometimes, I always figured it meant she was calling me or just checking if I was there. The crying sound, though, I figured out. She runs around the cage, occasionally bumps her head and makes that sound, then proceeds to shove her head into my hand, as if for comfort.
You have no idea how much better I feel knowing that my chin is making an alarm bark instead of some sort of kennel cough. My chin sounds almost like a wheeze at the end of the call and I searched everywhere to find out if he had to go to the vet asap! Thank you! I've done extensive research on chins before and still when I got mine, but I think that every first time chin owners should watch and learn from this video!
In my experience the scream/cry can be due to shock as well. I only ever hear my chins screaming when they fall a floor or two in the cage (they are never hurt by this, but they do scream once and then look surprised). The alarm call is interesting. I don't think my female has ever made it, but my male does it often. Funny thing is; he stops if you just start talking.
* hears the other noises * oh that’s very subtle how loud could a chinchilla’s bark really be? * hears bark * Jesus Christ that thing beats some dog barks I was not expecting that.
My chin has made alarm calls in her sleep ever since she was a baby. A couple times she's used it because she got stuck somewhere and needed me to help her get out, but I figured it was mostly a night terror thing that she learned also worked to Summon Mom because I'd always go and comfort her. (She's a single chin because the local rescue advised us to stop trying after multiple failed attempts to find a second chin she'd behave appropriately around. Loves humans, though!)
I've heard all of those. I have four chinchillas; a bonded male and female that are together, and two females that are on their own. George, my only male, absolutely hates the vet. He had to have an operation when he was young, and ever since he's been terrified of the vet. He barks, spits, moans and whimpers. Then when he's actually in the vet about to have his check-up, he cries like a human baby - very loud. He gets ever so distressed, bless him. Even though they're in three separate cages, they're all quite close by, so I often hear them all talking - and they do warning calls when large cars or vans go past. I think the low rumble must resemble some sort of deep growl. And two of the females - Ruby and Boo - also alarm call while they're sleeping, and stop once I wake them up. Seems like they're having nightmares. Then Meg, the smallest, doesn't ever make any sounds - no grumbles, no talking, barking, nothing. She sits nicely and doesn't ever get in a fuss about anything.
This is sooooooo helpful!! I was wondering why my chin was gently squeaking, and now I know! Thank you! And also Saturn is beautiful!! She looks like a snowball lol
Thank you very much for this video! The alarm barking is the thing my chins do from time to time that had me worried! And the "click" or "snap" sound before the barking, along with that sudden twitch is really what had me worried! Thanks again!
Your white chinchilla is so sweet and fluffy! I loved watching him wiggle around for the entire video lol. I'm trying to learn a lot more about chinchillas to see if I'd be able to own one, and this video was really helpful. =) The chinchilla's terrified cry was so sad to hear... =( I'm glad you added cute baby chinchilla noises after that... =(
It was good to finally see a video that interprets every sound so well... I've hard my Chinchilla for 7 years and just had to learn everything on my own. Every chinchilla owner should watch this video. Thank you Also about that teeth grinding sound I was kinda shocked to hear, since I've always thought my Chinchilla does it when it enjoys something. For example when I pet him while carrying him he just relaxes, closes his eyes and grinds his teeth slowly. I'm pretty sure he's enjoying it
Thank you. I suppose they probably can teeth chatter out of enjoyment as well🙂 I guess you have to look at the body language and behaviour of the chinchilla whilst they are doing it, if they seem like they are content then they probably are. Every pet owner knows their chins best and they all have unique personalities. I find it really interesting hearing what other peoples chinchillas do. With mine she is a sassy and grumpy girl and I immediatly know when she is annoyed or had enough by her body language.
OMG thank you! My baby is just hiccuping. I guess it’s bc she’s never been out of her cage before I adopted her and she’s just overjoyed at getting so much floor time
I can't thank you enough for the video qwq Never had a Chinchilla before and got two about three days ago and one of them suddenly started alarm calling when he saw my cat standing in the room yesterday. I forgot to look up the noises they make when doing some research and got scared for a moment xD And I'm kinda surprised that even the slightest thing could trigger the call :0 I knew they had sensetive hearing, but didn't think it's that sensetive
Thank you 🙂 They actually have a similar hearing range to humans but are just constantly on look out for danger, something as simple as a shadow in the room or an unfamiliar sound can cause them to alarm bark. Funny little creatures aren't they 😀
I always thought that alarm barking was just mine making noise, here’s the thing, the chinchilla is the most feared thing in the house and he knows it. Dog is terrified and he picks fights with the cat, mostly play but still.
First time watching. My college had an event "animal day" where we got to pick 5 animals we would like to see from a local zoo. One of them was a Chinchilla........and I just feel IN LOVE with him. Ever since than I so often think about getting one myself(taking everything into consideration). From what I looked up about them..............they require "Low-medium" maintenance?! This was a very helpful video. Thank you!!.
oh my god my new chin Eros just alarm barked and scared the living daylights out of me. I was like "oh my god what's wrong?!" and he just stared at me, then hopped on his blanket and went back to sleep. he woke up, screamed, and went back to sleep lmao thank you for this I thought he was hurt or something! maybe he had a bad dream?? also holy moly your baby is SO beautiful. I've never seen one who looks like her. she's so tiny and adorable 😍
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I’m a new chinchilla owner hearing the barking and I think it was one of the colors the night light turned :/ I was SO SCARED when Charlie was making this noise I got out of bed and am typing this now. I’ll try to reassure him
I once found a video of a rabbit crying on youtube. It's as horrifying of a sound as a chinchilla crying (possibly a little worse, definitely louder). I wanted to punch the people who made the video. They were laughing it up as the poor bunny thought it was about to die. Grrr.
These are great to know! And Saturn is so fluffy and beautifulll!! I LOVE his name, and did I mention how fluffy he iss? Oh my gosh I've never seen a floofy Chinchilla!
thank you so much! i was in the bathroom and i hear him alarm barking and i was so scared i thought he was having a heart attack! but i saw the thing in your video and i was relieved!!
thank you so much for this video i thought my chinchilla had something wrong with him because he kept doing the alarm noise but i listen to the alarm vs the hiccup and i found out he was just hiccuping and i was so relieved
Thank you so much for all your videos, they are so helpful for me, i have also a little black velvet chinchilla ( Melisa), and all your recommendations are useful for me !!! Thank you so much !!!
I remember one time when my chinchilla Chimmy was crying at 4 In the morning, when I went to go check on her she just looked at me like nothing happened
I love this 💕💕…one time two of my female chinchillas were fighting over the food until I separated them…when I whind up getting a bigger cage, and bigger bowls for them th share food….I put the other chinchilla back in with her sister. Ever since they stopped fighting. Now they play with each other and share 💕
Thank you for the helpful video! But I had them for years and only ever heard them making one sound one time ever, when one time my male chin fell off behind the table he made the alarm sound. Other than that the babies does make the really slight and cute sound. They are extremely quiet in my experience.
Quite funny, but I have been watching audible chinchilla videos, and there is one by another lad that makes my chine FREAK! He jumped out of the cage directly to my lap while hearing the sound. What a interesting reaction! I love your stuff and here is precious little information out there to be had!
When the chinchilla in the video started alarm barking, MY chinchillas freaked out, including all the other sounds, it’s like they’re communicating...except to a chinchilla in a RUclips video-
The spit! Thats what ive called it . good to know other chin owners call it that haha. My youngest has made a crazy noise a few times, it honestly sounded like he hurt himself. Hurt my heart to hear him make that noise.. Until one day I saw him drop his ball from the top of his cage and he screamed in dispair. He is a character for sure.
@@ishfuntime Good question 🙂 I usually use a safe treats to train them , something like a dried dandelion head or a little bit of plain shreaded wheat. I keep them in a little pot if I shake the pot they soon come running to me. I dont even have to give them the treat now they just come as soon as they hear the pot. It doesn't work with all my chinchillas though so for some I use a sand bath I shake the sand bath and they will come to have a sandbath and I can transport them back to there cage. Some I am really lucky with and they will go back in their cage on their own.
My Chin (His names chirpa and hes a biege 🥰) started hiccuping late at night and i had no idea why, so that night i got up and checked and appearently he was extremely excited as he found his favorite treats in his bowl that id put in earlier. (He loves rose hips and sometimes i sneak them in his food time to time)
I’ve only heard my chinchilla cry/scream once in my life and it was because he was having teeth problems (they grew into his sinuses). He was trying to drink water and was crying while doing it so I knew there was a problem. I brought him to the vet, got his teeth taken care of and had to hand syringe feed him for a while until he got better. That was about 4 years ago now and he’s been doing good ever since.
I have NEVER heard any of my chinchillas make that "screaming/crying" noise. Hearing that broke my heart. How could ANYONE hear that from a small creature and think that the noise means nothing is wrong? That blows my mind. Animals deserve so much better.
My Roo does only 2 barks, spitting if she's uncomfortable with me picking her up, and alarm call in her sleep. I'll literally will wake up to her giving an alarm call.
Thank you so much for explaining and showing examples. Yuki, my white Angora boy, does alarm bark everytime I go to bed. My door is always open so I hear him and his lover Ren always. Ren is very non verbal while Yuki is the grumpy boy. Now I need to figure out why he barks when I go to bed.
I always call the fighting sound “grumbling.” My chinchilla will do a more mild version of the sound if i accidentally poke her too hard or pet her in a spot she doesn’t like
My chinchilla has barked in his sleep a few times and scared the heck out of me, he twitches in his sleep a lot too. He also chatters at me sometimes which I thought was just him grinding his teeth or chewing something, but now I know that it means he's annoyed I'm going to have a very serious talk with him and remind him where his food comes from hahaha great video tho, thank you!!

Very good. And Saturn is one of the prettiest chins I've ever seen. I agree with all your interpretations.
Thank you 🙂

Thanks for giving the examples. It helps a lot.
Yes
Thank you very much for this video. I haven't found a more helpful and concise resource on Chinchilla sounds in one spot.
Thank you 🙂
This is sooooooo helpful!!
Thank you
Also about that teeth grinding sound I was kinda shocked to hear, since I've always thought my Chinchilla does it when it enjoys something.
Lovely video! Really informative, funny and sweet! You have a lovely personality, and Saturn is gorgeous!
OMG thank you! My baby is just hiccuping. I guess it’s bc she’s never been out of her cage before I adopted her and she’s just overjoyed at getting so much floor time
These little cloud creatures...
I must love one!
I come back just to see this specific chin! Saturn is the cutest chin I've ever seen! Please do a video of just petting her, please!
I can't thank you enough for the video qwq Never had a Chinchilla before and got two about three days ago and one of them suddenly started alarm calling when he saw my cat standing in the room yesterday. I forgot to look up the noises they make when doing some research and got scared for a moment xD
And I'm kinda surprised that even the slightest thing could trigger the call :0 I knew they had sensetive hearing, but didn't think it's that sensetive
Thank you 🙂
They actually have a similar hearing range to humans but are just constantly on look out for danger, something as simple as a shadow in the room or an unfamiliar sound can cause them to alarm bark.
Funny little creatures aren't they 😀
Cute!
Thank you - we are new to Chinchillas and have been wondering what the noises meant. This RUclips helped a lot.
I always thought that alarm barking was just mine making noise, here’s the thing, the chinchilla is the most feared thing in the house and he knows it. Dog is terrified and he picks fights with the cat, mostly play but still.
First time I saw a white chinchilla he is beautiful
My Gizmo alarm barks until I say his name.
Did you name your chin after the mogwai?
i love saturn so much oH MY GOSHHJ chinchillas are the cutest little things!!!
So cute!! Thanks so much! I have a female chinchilla called Snowflake. Finally I can understand her feelings
Ah! Thank you! My chinchilla was making a weird sound, so I looked it up and didn’t find anything. Turns out he was just hiccuping. Thank you!
Where i can adopt two chinchillas?
I’m from Puerto Rico.
(Sorry for my inglish)
💗 I really liked your video. Liked!
I have a chinchilla, a dog and a kitten. And they play in a very fun way 💗
I don't own a chinchilla, but I at least know for anyone who would want one what to look out for, for their vocals.
Ty my chinchilla makes the alarm call sometimes and I didnt know what it meant so I ty for making this video
My chinchillas alarm barking always scares me, I didn't know what it was. Thank you for clearing up why they do that! C:
First time watching. My college had an event "animal day" where we got to pick 5 animals we would like to see from a local zoo. One of them was a Chinchilla........and I just feel IN LOVE with him. Ever since than I so often think about getting one myself(taking everything into consideration). From what I looked up about them..............they require "Low-medium" maintenance?! This was a very helpful video. Thank you!!.
oh my god my new chin Eros just alarm barked and scared the living daylights out of me. I was like "oh my god what's wrong?!" and he just stared at me, then hopped on his blanket and went back to sleep. he woke up, screamed, and went back to sleep lmao
thank you for this I thought he was hurt or something! maybe he had a bad dream?? also holy moly your baby is SO beautiful.
I’ll try to reassure him
Omg! My chinchilla never cried and I never want to hear that sound ever again
Not gonna lie, the alarm made me jump😂
thank you so much! i was in the bathroom and i hear him alarm barking and i was so scared i thought he was having a heart attack! but i saw the thing in your video and i was relieved!!
thank you so much for this video i thought my chinchilla had something wrong with him because he kept doing the alarm noise but i listen to the alarm vs the hiccup and i found out he was just hiccuping and i was so relieved
broo i did not expect a chinchilla to bark
Thank you for this. I never knew what the barking was for. I always thought he was in distress.
Thank you so much for all your videos, they are so helpful for me, i have also a little black velvet chinchilla ( Melisa), and all your
recommendations are useful for me !!! Thank you so much !!!
He looks so fluffy 🥺
I remember one time when my chinchilla Chimmy was crying at 4 In the morning, when I went to go check on her she just looked at me like nothing happened
The most sound my chinchilla makes are the happy squeaking. Other than that, she's pretty vocally quiet
I love this 💕💕…one time two of my female chinchillas were fighting over the food until I separated them…when I whind up getting a bigger cage, and bigger bowls for them th share food….I put the other chinchilla back in with her sister. Ever since they stopped fighting. Now they play with each other and share 💕
when my chinchilla first barked at like 3:00am I was so scared I thought he was hurt lol
Omg that chin is just the fluffiest ball of Fluff ever!
It’s an adorable snowball!!!😄
At first I was like “wait my chinchilla doesn’t make any of these sounds!” But I had to listen more carefully and it ended up being the comfort one
Lol he loved a sock.....it's a guy thing yea 😂😂😂
i get it and im a girl LOL
🤣
That Chinchilla is soo fluffy I'm gonna die!!!😭😍🐭
When the chinchilla in the video started alarm barking, MY chinchillas freaked out, including all the other sounds, it’s like they’re communicating...except to a chinchilla in a RUclips video-
Thank you for educating me.
Ohhhhhhhhh so that’s why that alarm call freaks out
Omg your chinchin is sooo calm on your hands :) How did You do that?! 😍 😃
I am very lucky and have a few really chilled out chinchillas that really don't mind being handled at all 😀
@@AllysAnimalAntics lucky u! But how do u teach them to come to u if their running around the house?
@@ishfuntime Good question 🙂 I usually use a safe treats to train them , something like a dried dandelion head or a little bit of plain shreaded wheat. I keep them in a little pot if I shake the pot they soon come running to me. I dont even have to give them the treat now they just come as soon as they hear the pot. It doesn't work with all my chinchillas though so for some I use a sand bath I shake the sand bath and they will come to have a sandbath and I can transport them back to there cage. Some I am really lucky with and they will go back in their cage on their own.
Ally's Animal Antics would you be able to do a training tips video?
Ally's Animal Antics id also want to see a training video on how to bond w your chinchilla.
Such a cute creature. I love the butterfly shirt by the way.😀
Very informative. Thank you.
I’m looking forward to buying two chinchillas 😍 this is soooo cute
Thank you so much for making this video. I have been looking all over for sound interpretation. Smokey makes some of these sounds.
Tracy Hughes I had referenced this site but now I think this video is better infolific.com/pets/chinchillas/chinchilla-sounds/
This was so helpful for my chinchilla!!! Thank you!
wow I didn't know some chinchillas could be that big... I want one!!!❤❤
According to my vet, my late chinchilla "Knows all the bad words and isn't afraid to say them".
Love how you used Spinels gemstone from SU.
that wasn't, that was a clip art gem heart, its probably old as dirt
DATS ONE ROUND BOI!!
ADORABLE
Saturn is adorable i’m jealous
😍😍😍 oh.my gosh!. I'm seriously considering Chins at the moment and glad I found this clip!
My chinchilla used to bark during the day, and I'd go comfort her, and she would stop right away. :)
the old chinchilla was like "I'll pay you for feet pics."
Now I want a pet cloud as well!
I always call the fighting sound “grumbling.” My chinchilla will do a more mild version of the sound if i accidentally poke her too hard or pet her in a spot she doesn’t like
Can't stop looking at your fluffyball
My chinchilla has barked in his sleep a few times and scared the heck out of me, he twitches in his sleep a lot too. He also chatters at me sometimes which I thought was just him grinding his teeth or chewing something, but now I know that it means he's annoyed I'm going to have a very serious talk with him and remind him where his food comes from hahaha great video tho, thank you!!
I wish we had chinchillas in Australia. So adorable! 😍
That white chinchilla is so adorable and chill. 💜 Makes me want one. Looks like a living cloud
my chinchilla alarm calls at 4AM...all the time....then it’s like.....ma’am, it makes me think my room is haunted
