He was moving it around and it suddenly broke and he said that bear went berzerk and tore out saplings and raked at the ground and thrashed the forest for several minutes. He said it was devastatingly scary. Then the bear calmed down and just trotted off. He said it appeared that the Grizzly wasn't too keen on the snow having the audacity to break when he was playing with it.

We were told when I worked up north in Prudhoe Bay, that if you found yourself out in the tundra during the winter; to drop articles of clothing if you were being tracked by a Polar bear. The idea was, it's better to die of hypothermia before that bear gets you. That was pretty much the message we got.

My friend, bi-athlete Mary Beth Miller was killed by a black bear while training for the olympics in Quebec. Neighbour (forestry worker) was mauled by a grizzly and had his scalp removed. His back pack saved his life. Just saying, I’m very familiar with bears. The Grizzly is the boss though and I agree with Joe. I’ve been around them fishing and they are the kings. No question. When I lived in Alaska as a young child to a young adult I grew up hunting/fishing in the bush where you could easily encounter brown bears (within 50 miles of the ocean that mainly eat fish as their diet so they grow very large), grizzly bears (outside of 50 miles of the ocean where they hunt prey, some fish, and forage for vegetation), black bears, wolves, wolverines, and if you go far enough north in a moose hunt you could run into polar bears (in Barrow Alaska they have been known to lay in snow berms on their bellies with their paws covering their eyes/nose so you can’t see any of the black of their skin/only white fur in a solid field of snow. They lay in wait because they can smell the people inside and look for people with a higher adipose tissue/fat content so that they get the most calories. They’ve lost multiple people in Barrow and Prudhoe Bay by these types of attacks.). From the age of 14 when I started to go hunting/fishing with friends my dad made sure I always had my .44 magnum Colt Anaconda Redhawk with my speedloaders on me at all times. Thankfully the bear encounters you always draw your gun just in case but because I was taught each of the predators behaviors I knew the best way to avoid having to engage them to be able to go peacefully without taking the life of an animal that isn’t good meat for subsistence. The only predators I had to kill in Alaska was a single brown bear in our town that was destroying a family friends property, killing the pets of the neighbors in the area, breaking in to steal food from the homes/garages/trash can, and the bear had no fear of people so unfortunately the APD officer that was with us told us if we come across the specific bear to be ready to put it down because it will soon become violent towards people. This is why people shouldn’t have direct interactions with wild animals because we actually make them not fear humans and will draw their curiosity that will eventually become aggressive when the human doesn’t do what the bear expects. The only other predators that I ever killed was in specific locations that the wild wolf populations where out of control and they had to reduce the population to protect the game animals from being over hunted by the wolves that would destroy the wolf population due to lack of food within a year as well as the “prey/game animals”. You had to report when, where, sex of animal, and how many that you’ve harvested to ensure that the wolf population didn’t get decimated nor the game animal population get decimated from too many wolves. It is a very important balance to ensure that there are animals for future generations to be subsistence hunting to survive. We never hunted more than what we needed to survive and those few times that we killed predators we talked with the local native Alaskan tribes to be able to claim any of the spoils of the kills that they could use traditionally or practically so that little to nothing goes to waste. It helped build a relationships with them so that they would allow us to use their land to harvest meat but we would always off them the parts that they wanted as long as we got some meat for our freezer to survive. The organs that most people would view as worthless could easily be made into halibut/ling cod/rock fish-sea bass/other fish you can-could legally use bait to fish for (salmon in many "fisheries" was banned so we really had to do our homework to ensure no poaching occurrr.).

I live in Northern Alberta, and for years worked as a female welder in the oil sands, in the middle of the bush, on night shift. It’s not supposed to happen, but there were multiple times where it was pitch black in the middle of the site, with no one working with me to spot or as a helper, that I just relied on my welder and grinder for the noise and sparks and smell, and my radio and truck. That was it. Almost daily we saw black bears in camp, and less often but still frequently we saw both Black bears and Grizzly’s along the rod from camp to site. Moose and their babies. Tonnes of coyotes and foxes. The worst thing ever though, especially as a female, was when a female on another site in the area got killed by a predatory black bear. I wasn’t there, but I worked with more than one of the guys that was. This poor woman went to go to the bathroom and this black bear grabbed her and started mauling her and dragging her off into the bush. Her crew heard the noise and her screaming and ran to her. Some of the guys tried to distract the bear while the others tried to o get her away from the bear. Emergency services came. They also implemented a water cannon with the fire crew trying to help get her free. All of those men and resources and she was still killed and dragged off…and then they apparently had to call her brother, from a different area on site, to tell him what happened. I can so empathize with this poor woman and her family, friends, and crew. It’s hard to truly imagine the horror of what she went through, but also all the brave people and crew members who did all they could to try to save her. There were times I would walk into one of the buildings in our area, and see that bears had been in the entrances digging in the garbages, because despite the rules, guys would bring food out there and throw their garbage in the bins at the entrance doors. They think the reason the predatory bear was attracted to that area in the first place was because people were not cleaning up the smoke pits properly, and left food garbage and coffee cups in the smoke pits, also against rules. I will never forget this woman and this story. RIP. I will also never forget: If it’s black, fight back. If it’s brown, get down. If it’s white, goodnight. I hope anyone reading this understands and remembers this too, as well as this woman and her story. I know I think of her often and always will.

8:30 I think the main reason humans developed their abilities to think, reason, and plan is because we were weaker, slower, and more vulnerable than animals half our size and weight. A 75 lbs dog can mess up a 225 lb man if it means business.

What Joe says about the polar bear is possibly true. They are one of the few predators that see us humans as a source of food. And if I recall correctly, the inhabitants of Svalbard (part of Norway) have to carry a rifle if they are going to leave a built-up area for more than a few hundred metres. The reason for this is the aggressive nature and threat of the polar bear.

I watched a show year’s ago where they were relocating a Grizzly bear. The bear was in a cage and they attempted to stick two wooden poles through the cage to lift it. No problem with the pole in the back but when they went to put the pole through the front the pissed off bear threw a angry little swat and snapped that two or three inch thick pole like a toothpick. That image has stuck with me for years. Amazing power.

    • @RogueReplicant

That doesn't help us in understanding the power of the bear. What kind of wood was it? Was it rotting, dry, brittle?

@@RogueReplicant I’m not sure but it was thick enough and strong enough that they were going to lift a full grown bear in a cage with two of them. Sorry I couldn’t give better details.

I have a friend that's worse than bam margera with snakes. I've watched him levitate and teleport over a very large female copperhead that had just eaten a small possum sized prey.. and he stepped right over it and realized it. The snake whipped a 180 on him and coiled back to defend itself and I've never seen anyone disappear so fast. He was gone like he was Arnold Schwarzenegger running through the jungle from the predator. It took me 3 hours to find him he was at HOME. Still shook as hell.

There’s a 70’s documentary talking about a hunter found a 800lb bear with its neck snapped. They determined no animal and not even a another bear could have done that. They’re convinced a Bigfoot snapped this bears neck. Imagine how powerful a Bigfoot would have to be to snap a bears neck like a twig.

I heard of an account by a biologist in the greater yellowstone region that was tracking grizzlies and monitoring them during the winter while they were in their dens. Apparently, they had stumbled across more than a dozen of their bears across the mountainside that had broken backs and almost no disturbance in the snow. Kind of crazy to think that a bear getting in an altercation with something that we can't identify (or won't identify) through science could break it's back while barely altering the space around the den.
