i just installed a Corsair SF600 in my Optiplex 7040 mini tower and have a GEFORCE GTX 1660 Ti (6GB GDDR6) working.
Are you able to take the parts out and move it to a new mid tower pc case? (Been looking at an s340 case for the parts here
At 5:06 you can see a M.2 connector for an NVMe PCIe SSD which will outperform any SATA SSD. Back in 2017, they were expensive though.

This January I changed RAM upgrade to 64GB (Micron 16G DDR4-2400 x4), VGA card (EVGA GTX 1050 Ti SSC) and add Intel M.2 SSD 600p (2280).
It works when i playing Starcraft II and other games, the PSU use about 130W~145W.
Also I tested Powercolor RX460 4GB GDDR5, the PSU use about 150W~165W.
Remember, DO NOT BUY GTX 1050 TI / RX 460 WHEN IT NEED 6-PIN Require

Hi. I know I'm late but I have a question regarding my optiplex 7040. I have the same type of optiplex but it has an i7-6700 octa-core and 8gb ram pre installed. I installed a 1050ti and replaced the stock pcu with a 400w pcu, although it doesnt fit inside the case so I left it stationed outside instead. My problem is that my computer powers off when I run high demanding games like Tomb Raider or Fallout 4. I tried leaving the case cover open then pointed a ventilation fan as I run those games again but still my computer shuts off. I dont know if its an overheating issue or something else.
Not enought power from psu, if its not certified will not be real 400 w, you should need to buy a 400w or 500w psu certified (real power output)

If youre looking to game on it you can easily get away with installing a small GTX 750ti, 1050 or 1050ti or RX460 that dont require additional power
its only 240w psu, for all of that cards he really need to upgrade the psu

The thing is, my Optiplex 7040 has a limitation on ram frequency, it stucks at 2133 MHz and I'm using Netac ram 2x8 3200 MHz.
Do you have to do some tweak to make this computer use the 3200 MHz of your ram?

No, the PSU on the Optiplex 7040 is really weak. 180W
no mine is 240W
Oh, do you have the big tower version of the 7040? You should switch out the power supply if you do and get at least a 300w PSU.
Hey Hanco Games the power supply is a tfx12v you would have to modify the case for a regular atx power supply.. The best one so far that is on Newegg is 420watts for the tfx12v. still not enough juice for most graphics cards with a 6pin or 8 pin power, how ever a gtx 1060 requires 6pin power and the minimum is a 400 watt power supply. I would still get a 420watt power tfx12 if I could just in case for heavy computing power. But if you stay below gtx 1060 series you will be fine. Also check the older gpu's like the gtx 980 as they still use a lot of power. Best bet instead of modyfing the case for a cut out or having the power supply limitations I would just get a cheap 20 case from newegg with free shipping and you would be good to go without scratching your head. All you need is a micro atx case.

Yes the motherboard can be used in other cases. Just take it out and put it in a full atx or micro atx of your choice. I did that to mine. Read my previous description above..
So uhhh im might but ine off amazon with a i5 16gb ram 512gb ssd and i want to add a low profile 1030 idk the power supply watts so i went ona webaite and it said it has a 180 wats power suply and im pretty sure the whole compiter uses 100 and a 1030 is like less than 75 wats so i think im good btw the pc cost like 240$ and the low profile 1030 is like 100 dollars and to add a montior 1080p all of this is 500 dollars cant wait to get a j9b and get this even though i have a all in one with amd radeon tm 8gb ram 1tb ssd and ryzen 5 4500 so what do you think?

You could have upgraded the power supply to 360 watts and then install a better GPU.

The SFF Optiplex 7040 features a 180W PSU which may not be enough for the 75W that consumes the 1050ti low profile. On the other hand, the Mid Tower (MT) Optiplex 7040 comes with a 240W PSU that may be sufficient. Official tech specs indicates a 300W PSU needed for the 1050ti lp.

Old games, some f2p games AND modern games like fo4 GTA 5 csgo and probably destiny 2, all on medium settings maybe high, and I have a 900p monitor (1440x900)
My friend, have you considered a GT 1030? Quite pricy but excellent in a small form factor PC as it only requires 30W of power unlike the more powerful cards such as 1050ti that need at least 75W. This card would be great for older games and newer games, especially if you have a 900p monitor. The drawback is that it you may not be able to play the AAA games for the following years.
