Try doing what my boss did when I worked commercial landscaping. My boss worked off incentive. Work the whole summer season, the best customer reviews, and the least amount of mistakes gets a 5 day Flordia vacation for them and their significant other. His way of looking at things were a Flordia trip will cost me money, but losing a contract will cost me more. My former boss would take the top 3 performers of that season, and give them a week on him. Just an idea.

I own a General contracting business for 35 years. Don't blame your employees. While it's true they slacked off; it's YOUR fault, You need to hire a manager or do it yourself...Employees these days are TERRIBLE...They require CONSTANT babysitting...Force them to do a video call and walk the property BEFORE they leave...You'll save yourself a lot of headaches...

Yet, no employer ever wants to look in the mirror and realize they’re the problem. Your employees are your number one priority and asset. Your employees give YOU the opportunity to own a biz. For 15 years I worked for a landscape company as a supervisor. It became too much because vast majority of the guys they hired were basically 30 year old children. I never liked to fuss. But had to because the customers were complaining. The crew uses to complain to company owner about me being mean. What I said was if they just did their job correctly with no customer complaints I wouldn't say a word. I would be happy. But to me. The customer is my boss. I left that company. He is just showing it's not all fun and games. If they don't want to called out, do the job you were hired and payed to do right without having to be treated like a baby. Not cleaning and maintaining the equipment tells you they don't care and do as little as possible. I probably wouldn't publicly complain about them either but they would be looking for a new job. Landscaping is hard physically but not mentally, if you don't have it down in a month or two you are dead weight.

@@MrNota500 Sorry, but that's an idiotic way of managing people. When employees aren't doing their job, it's a MANAGEMENT failure. I know, I was a contractor for 30 years. If there's consistent eff ups, it was my fault for not training/teaching my employees. Of course, there's always one-off mistakes that everyone makes, but when it's systemic, it's a management failure. This clown says he's getting multiple complaints about some of his people. Well, that's a clear supervision failure. Trust but verify. Regardless of who's fault it is, publicly criticizing your employees is a sure way to lose employees, and potentially subject yourself to lawsuits.

Without a motivated leader type on each crew you'll need to have a schedule for them each day of what to do to whatever time they need to work til. I've had this problem for 20 years here in Fl. It's difficult finding dedicated workers that aren't pill heads or drunks or just lazy. More work on you, but you can't be everywhere at once. Have them sign off on the schedule every day. @@pagelservices I have 5 crews ranging between 5 and 2 workers on each crew. We are located in the twin cities. Although a turf tracer is a bit slower than a ztr it is far less likely to damage properties when mowing in difficult conditions or terrain. A turf tracer with the Kage Wheel Kaddy is the ultimate machine for weekly cutting. With the deck out in front of you the operator is able to get closer to obstacles and corners reducing the amount of string trimming needed. You will also reduce customer complaints because they are less likely to create ruts, or tear things up while making turns. I have standers and they are great for certain properties. If I had to choose a stander or Walk behind I would take the walk behind every day. Another consideration is that turf tracers have a floating deck with rollers that will not scalp when mowing on uneven ground. I watch your videos because it is clear you know what you are doing. I would recommend you giving one a try. They still mow at 7 MPH which is fairly quick.

It all depends on who’s leading the culture of the company. If you find yourself being spread thin amongst the day, which is surely does suggest that you do, it’s best to manage one person who can control a crew then trying to control an entire crew without leadership. Utilize the crew that you have reshape it, change it, provide support and you should not have these problems. Of course everyone has their own opinion and how to run a company, I suggest to reevaluate the culture of Business, revisit your vision, revamp your process, and start putting people in leadership.

I get the frustration, but it's not unique to your company. Contractors of all types have this problem with young American kids. My question is: What advantage is there to going onto youtube and complaining about your employees? It won't inspire them to work harder. If anything they will despise you more and become your competitors. Seems kind of demoralizing to broadcast how much you dislike them this way. I really can't see any positive change in the long run on this move. Sorry.

your mulching crews need to learn to dump piles in the open spots, they spend too much time fighting to dig mulch out of the barrow and that's also going to ruin barrows as the forks hit the bottom crease. they aren't steel barrows which can handle that. i used to be a stucco tender so i've wore down a few shovels and barrows in my 20's they can pitch and distribute and pick loads with the pitch forks from piles easier less fuss, less muss, making easy sweeps instead of bone jarring jabs. as a tender i could literally long stroke cement faster, further and to more volume than they are covering the same ground 3 times faster. it's almost circular windmilling that is less stress and more muscle finesse.

It's extremely hard to find good quality workers these days but if they have been trained, know what they are supposed to do, but don't do it; hit the road jack. I would verify the complaint is legit first, find out their side, and decide from there. Maybe if you do keep a little closer eye on them they will stop slacking off.

I also am right with them every day, working right next to them. I’ve only watched this one video but I’ll watch more, it appears you have too many chiefs and not enough Indians but I probably haven’t seen the whole crew yet. Here is my philosophy for how I manage my construction business, I never tell them to do anything that I am not willing to do myself and when they are doing a good job I will always compliment them on it and tell them Thank you ,you will be surprised how valuable them words can be be unpredictable and go do a final inspections out of the blue and then when they are done good work consistently give that crew a $40-50 cash bonus randomly when you do a final check and it looks amazing, but sometimes you will have shity employees and they will have to go because they will always do ias little as possible if you allow shit to slide and if you tell them to do something a specific way and they don't and you just shake your finger at them there not going to change they need to know that your bark could come with a bit ,REMEMBER a junk is a junk!

Complaining about your employees is not a good way to go about it. If you have a disdain for your employees, they feel it and act accordingly. Take some of the responsibility and be a better boss and give encouragement, trust and incentive. At the point when you have taken care of your employee lawn, you take out the bad weeds and hire better.

wrenching with kenny. your caliper bolts aren't sliding so basically one side is being sucked into the rotor and doing all the work and heating up the most and causing that bad wear.
if you have a bad crew that's a reflection of your reputation on managing your company and it's reputation, reputation is everything, it's easy to lose, and almost impossible to get back.
show them all the clients they are losing, that's their paycheck, they don't help other crews cuz they will just cost you more clients and bad reputation....when it gets to a level the other crews can do combined...asta la vista.
99% of a crew comes down to their attitude towards doing things the hard way or top notch, that last 1% is how well you teach/train and supervise them. if you don't have time for that, you don't have time to run a business.
set the standards high, play some pitt bull, ..." reach for the stars, cuz if you think about it if they fall, they will fall on top of your girl...." just watched a neighbor with his fence company and his son just knocked up the office secretary....her daddy is performing a shot gun wedding and this girl is gold digging. pray you don't have any daughters. 😅
if you have a new crew you ratchet down on them by being their supervisor on the job every job until you have to leave the job to attend to other issues and you come back and they have completed the job to your satisfaction, then you can tell them you'll let them have more freedom to do what they need to so long as it stays at that quality level, you do the mowing & direct them everything that needs to be done and make it the best quality every time, every place every touch up and primp possible, that way when they slack off again it will be at a better quality level...and if they don't show them the door.

And make it as clear as death and sunshine that the next complaint the job looks like shit. They will be getting fired.

Plain and simple, you've already talked to them a few times, get them together and show them the letter from the customer that you just lost. Tell them the next one of these you get, you'll flip a coin and one of them is gone. It sucks trying to replace workers and especially finding good workers, but looks like you built yourself quite the business, and with that comes a reputation. If you keep letting "Your" workers do sh*t work. You'll end up with a bad one.

Kids these days don’t care and have no pride in their work. Unfortunately constant babysitting and micromanaging is needed. Or you spend more money and hire a manager to babysit them. Good luck.

New here so I don't know the structure/dynamics for them, but if he's having as much trouble as he let's on, and she's as good of a worker as projected, I'd bump her up at least a couple bucks, put her on as a lead, and make it known to that crew, what she says goes when I wasn't around. All employees really only want a few things : a higher wage, an easy work place, and to feel like they're integral. Pay and "promotions" (even if only in title) help meet two of those criteria, and if that person is a good employee/leader they can easily help maintain the structure of efficiency you set for them thus making that "easy workplace" dream a reality when everyone pulls their own. Being fair I don't have alot of experience as an owner, I only have a crew of 4, generally we split in 2 groups, and honestly smaller crews are far easier than large ones, albiet when one person goes down its felt alot more, but I have held trades jobs my entire life and have learned alot from some amazing folks and time and time again it always tends to boil down to those things. I spose not always, but almost.
