WHY WAS THIS CUSTOMER SO ANGRY?

  • We were pouring out this 24x40 pole barn concrete floor and a misunderstanding set this customer and his wife into a rage. Do you think I did the right thing by staying and finishing the job? What would you have done?

I give you credit for doing the rest of the things . He knew exactly what he was doing. I can’t stand people that basically try to steal their way into a good deal . You are a good person to finish , not sure I could have. Oh and taking the doughnuts away is priceless 😂

The last contractor probably pulled out because he could see that the homeowner is not an honest dealer. $6k for the initial job is very reasonable. His hiding behind his wife’s supposed wishes, frankly, is just cowardly. Trying to bust up your crew is just rotten.

I'll bet if you talk to the builder that put up the pole barn they have a similar story. The guy that was going to pour the floor probably heard some stories and said "I'm out of here". Good for you sticking it out, bet there were a few extra beers after that job.

He would get called in to repair jobs others had done shoddily and daddy would not get paid for it and too often, daddy got cussed out for what someone else had done. Daddy worked very long hours for really poor pay, but when he laid his head down at night, I know he sleep soundly knowing he always did the right thing. I've had a similar thing happen to me a couple of times with a certain demographic that I won't mention. It is unbelievable how people act when you do a very good job. They even asked the guys to work for them off the books. Uh-huh. I would never even think of acting this way. It's disgusting really. They have NO SHAME. Money is all they care about not people.

This guy likely had the idea of confronting you and being pissed off in his head long before you even started the job. Some people have no morals, and him trying to backdoor you with your crew shows just how low class he really is. I would also imagine that he has a long history of trying to scam contractors for extra work and get stuff done for free on his property. For what he ended up with for a floor, 3 aprons, and the extra work, should have been around $8-10 grand easy.
At this point, I would imagine that no matter what you do, the guy will be bad mouthing you to anyone who asks just to make himself feel like another victim of a bad contractor. I'm not sure if all that came from him, or his wife in the background, but they are apparently 2 peas in a pod and clearly deserve all the frustration and turmoil they experience in life.

Retired now, Give you what worked for me I always wrote out a contract even if it fit on the back of a business card for all set price jobs. I usually included a hand drawn sketch. Especially with new customers but I treated long term customers even more carefully with documenting a job as I did not want a misstep with a good customer to harm our relationship. With T & M jobs I wrote hourly charges and mark-ups on materials on a business card if that was all that was available and always took time to write a change/addition order before addition/change work started this saved me many issues, but not all over the years. This was a good outcome as you found out who you were working for on a very small job so I see this job as a blessing, as this outcome could have happened on a much larger job. Put this in your rear view mirror ASAP, I would not have gone as far as you given the facts so I am somewhat envious of how this was handled by you. Good Job. Ray
