A "Contract" is a binding legal document, put a lien against his home for amount unpaid, plus 20% for legal fees. Being a so called "contractor" himself, he knows what's coming. Don't allow him to get away with anything.
Am also a contractor / supplier. We need to stop guys like this. Lien the house and sue the f man... I know other contractors doing the same thing.. royalmoon pools watch out.. this year going after all contractors n home owners. Stand up u do good work get paid for it. His don this before n banks on the other guy just living it alone go after him. Just takes few clicks n hundred bucks to lien. Small claims court not bad do it.
very true i was in the music scene and got a bit popular underground, about 17 yrs ago a guy in california was basically trying to online bully me and threaten me. he did this for 5 yr straight and i just kept blocking him. eventually after 17 yrs he finally got as popular as i was 17 yrs ago and toured to one of my local clubs where i knew the entire staff, and my friend was the person who booked him. although such a long time had passed i confronted him and tried to ask to put everything behind us, the guy got a attitude and before he finished even yelling at me i pushed him really hardto get enough distance to swing at him and busted his nose wide open. he had to go in theback room and walk past the crowd and sit with the other musicians trying to get his nose to stop bleeding. it humbled him pretty quick. i realize its petty at the age of 43, but hey, whatever lol
They are jerks until they get punched in the face you say. I say they're still jerks just jerks that got punched in the face and maybe more than once LOL
I was a drywall contractor for forty years, and learned really quickly that if you're getting bad vibes from a customer early on its best to run before you're past the point of no return. Hard work deserves respect and full payment.
Your probably the home owner. You're comment added nothing to the conversation but "Oh I think I'm smart and whitty" shut up you're not Ryan Reynolds@@kellydockweiler7077
My father was an electrical contractor and used to run up against this sort of thing all the time. One project, everything was super urgent and all the trades were working overtime to get it done. I remember working at 9pm in the foyer, putting up lights, while the painters were painting the walls, while the plumber was installing a fountain while the landscapers were finishing the garden. There were ~8 of us all working on top of each other. It was chaos. When project was finished (on time), the guy turns around and says to all the trades "accept a 50% discount and I will pay you or you can take me to court". Most of the little guys couldn't afford the time/cost of the court option and accepted the offer. My dad was stubborn and refused to "feed the sharks" so he got together with the plumber and took it through court. It takes a long time and costs a lot (and with the stupid legal system, there are no guarantees). They won in the end and received payment for everything - the guy ended up paying way more in legal costs than he owed anyone - so it was a win for the lawyers. I have many more stories like this...
Just a little advice... Doing concrete work is tough. But structure your payments as follows 30% up front, 30% when all the form work is done, 30% when the concrete shows up, 10% on final inspection. And 15% labor increase on any change plus extra materials cost multipled by 3. People like him take advantage of honest professionals like you.
@@tclanjtopsom4846what are you talking about? You don’t see where the concert went? They didn’t just poor it on the ground and hope for the best. All that prep is the form work
For those of you wondering it was 40% That's what the customer paid Odelle. I had to scroll through the comments for an hour to finally find it 😂 Great work on a successful job well done minus the stiffing of full payment, and congratulations on a very successful video.
Wow!... and the guy is a contractor?... 40% percent is rebar, framing, concrete and pouring alone... and there was a last minute change order request by the customer!
It won't just follow him, if he ever sells the house, he has to pay the lien first. And if he files for bankruptcy the lien stays in place, he cannot get away from it.
I’m a GC myself. Although concrete is not my best personal strength, I’ve been around it plenty enough to know exactly what I’m seeing and exactly what you’re saying. I’ve watched both videos and I’ve been reading these comments. I feel compelled to say to you, Good fucking job man. Outstanding work, top notch quality. Customers like this are the worst kind of people. You handled yourself like a true professional. I salute you, sir. I have to ask, how much did he end up holding out on the payment? Not asking what you charged, but how much did he not pay you? After watching this and seeing such good quality, I can only hope you charged him accordingly from the gate.
He only paid 40%. He is the owner/contractor of a pool and spa company. He is the moron vaping on the video. Leonidas would be ashamed his company is named after the great warriors.
Bro, he never intended to pay you from day 1. It was 100% a scam. You should sue him for the rest of your money. The job was perfect. Absolutely beautiful
40% is nuts. Please hold that abuser accountable - he owes 100% plus every change order (rebar, rebar chairs, the upcharge on the 4500psi concrete, the oiling the forms, the extra labor for the 4500 psi concrete (and mark up the labor even more for “last minute” change where you had to scramble to find them)). File and perfect your mechanics lien. Take him to court - preferably small claims, if your jurisdiction permits that. With your documentation and videos, I can bet that most judges would side with you right away.
@@mysticknight9711 You don't know it was preplanned manipulation of the price. Filing litigation for recoveries is just another cost and an unnecessary time penalty. Contractors should understand and inquire when red flags appear when quoting. The first minute of part 1 clearly shows that Odell's had those red flags but chose to ignore them. I've been licenced in construction and building houses since 16 years old, worked in the UK for 5 years and now own concrete trucks....... Never had a bad customer in over 45 years in the building industry. 🦘
I’d say the homeowner has gotten away with this before and has not been investigated or charged before. He’ll do it again until he gets a blackball from all local contractors and workers. He is an exploiter.
The homeowner is definitely someone who does this to people habitually. Someday he'll find the person who retaliates with aggression when he tries to stiff them. Karma is real.
dude, thats a bit rude. Have you watched any of his other videos? He does good work. What do you do for a living? Do people question your values, standards or word?@@wonderbread2364
@@wonderbread2364 That's a dick question. Going over the job to ensure you have left no stone unturned does not mean you don't always strive to do the best job possible. If you plan to be in business for more than a year, any good businessperson knows that a quality job brings more customers and a shity job will mean bad reviews, which everyone knows spreads faster.
I'm a retired general contractor, over 40 years of experience. Built too many houses to count, and pour a whole lot of flatwork with my crew. This is a about the best I;ve seen. Great work for sure!
I tried running my own company doing general remodeling, i found myself working for weeks without making money. And it only took one of these types of people to make me want to stop. 'Theres not anough trades people' to be changed to 'not anough people to rip off' Good job dude, you saved yourself by making the video and recording everything. Wish i would have done the same
Anyone who openly documents their work as you do obviously has pride in what they do. I have been following your videos for years and learnt a lot. Great job as always
It's a really bad position that he was put in. He could have gone with his gut when it told him that this guy is trouble, but the cement trucks and laborers were all there expecting payment too. He should have parted ways when the guy demanded 4500 psi at the last minute.
@@OdellCompleteConcrete I would post his name, and business name, and sue him for the remainder of the agreed upon money, AND pain and suffering, and loss of time.
I live in the uk and used to be in construction work and you young man are top notch ,I would hire you any day. Don’t let this guy get you down you’re better than he is and you will do well . Good luck for the future and keep your guard up 👍
That was a technical concrete job which was executed very well. The forming looked correct, the grading appeared very accurate, the rebars were evenly spaced and on chairs, pitching all those surfaces into the drains with what looks like minimal slopes and working around all those obstacles with 4500 psi mud and putting a beautiful finish on it with all the edges and control joints finished nicely. Wow. You're very good and you've obviously got a great crew. I believe the customer is a criminal that should be in prison.
That's an awesome job. That customer simply doesn't wanna pay and probably had this planned all along. You always do a great job. If you were in my area, I'd hire you in a heartbeat. Keep up the good work
Beautiful job! I'm now retired but I was a DOT Construction inspector. And from what I see you guy's did a great job from start to finish. This guy shouldn't have had any complaints.
I painted walls and floors at a 6 car repair garage. After completing the paint on floor began bubbling and peeling. Owner mentioned that they had a 500 gallon used oil spill recently that covered entire area. If i knew this in advance i would have refused the job. Like painting an oily sponge. Finally after much bs from the guy i told him i was calling the EPA and having them pull soil samples under his foundation and if they found contamination he was looking at a fine, loss of business and the cost to have the entire site dug up and desposed of. He paid in full and i never heard from him again.
Sorry for the bad luck on the floor job! I am a retired Painter and have always used sulfuric acid to clean concrete floors, I also mop with soap and water, before and after the acid wash. Before painting I would brandish with Burlap cloth. Also make sure all moisture has evaporated. I use a industrial fan for drying and depending on humidity and temperature conditions.
I would hire yall 100% You worked quick cuz ya had too, but without forgoing quality. You double checked everything. You communicated your intentions and received feedback throughout. You handled adversity like a champ And your finished product looked great!
Don’t let him get away with it! Take him to court!! He never intended to pay you since day 1 on the job. You have video proof that the job was done perfectly to his spec. And, beautifully done, might I add.
I hate it. going through our courts is such a hassle. Odell would rather have his channel's views pay for his loss. A lot less time wasted and more monetary gain. but if nobody checks that fool, he's just going to keep stiffing people. So I really dislike that he's letting him get away with it.
Ha! Yep, makes the day longer and when someone’s over your shoulder all day. I had one bloke set up a deck chair and esky with some frothy lamb chops to watch the magic happen. He was chill though, even insisted we shared a few of his frothies with us at the end of the day. 🍻
When i get clients like this plumbing, i straight up stop and leave .they freak out and stfu the minimal amounts of times this has happened to me. Great work btw
I worked in the construction industry for almost 30 years and I agree with you , the was done properly . This is also the reason why I left the industry , because of customers like this guy .I had reached the point where I was debating wether I should bury people like this guy in the concrete , but I decided not to go to prison and leave the field instead . You do good work and the team you have seem very qualified ; chuck it off as a bad experience and let other contractors know not to deal with this piece of work .
Man it’s a dangerous feeling when you reach that point. I’m a draftsmen with 23 years experience and when I would have to do job site visits (one in particular where they didn’t follow the plans at all but blamed it on us and wanted chargebacks). They didn’t count on us driving 3.5 hours to the job site the same day. We got there and they the erector company, decided to start cutting rafters. Well if they looked at the plan they would have seen they were just putting the ridged Frames together wrong. Thankfully we didn’t have to pay them anything. But I sure did think about making The foreman on that crew disappear when I kept telling me I was wrong. Then I show him and his crew that they were putting it together wrong…. Complete silence.
Same here . . The anger turned into rage and rage was on the verge of unbridled violence . Wasn't good for my future ability to be a free man . People suck .
I've been a painting contractor for 28 years and thank God I've only encountered one customer like this. The bottom line is this guy is a major scumbag and a crook. I would definitely pursue legal action against him. You're so smart to video your work. I love you and your dad's videos, and I think your work is second to none. Please don't let this guy get away with this. You deserve every cent and whatever else the court rewards you in penalties from this clown. Maybe then he'll learn to have respect for good, honest people. I'm guessing he paid you no more than 40% of your contract, but I'd like to think it's more. Keep posting your work, so many of us love your videos.
It is too late, Mr Odell already breached his fiduciary duty with the private homeowner, by seeking his "pound of flesh" in the social media public sphere, here on RUclips.
I owned a landscaping company, in our contracts we would add the wording. After signing if the customer wanted to change anything then a new contract would be written up with an added 10% fee.
You don’t need to write up a new contract. You write up a change order. The change order will: describe the change/added work, the cost of the work, and the General Contractor fee and overhead percentages on top of the cost of work.
1. You did a great job as always 2. Consult a lawyer, sadly this sort of thing does happen 3. I assume some of those saying you should take it apart are joking but just in case theres someone reading who might find himself in a similar situation and doesn't know any better - don't. Paid for or not, in the eyes of the law in most parts of the world and the US that is part of his property now and you could be arrested for anything from vandalism to destruction of property if you try to demolish or sabotage it 4. When I first meet a potential customer I try to get a feel for mental stability, I construct it as an interview and try to get to know the person - we dont have to be friends though that's nice, but we do have to be able to work together - this is a critical step I would advise everyone to take
No need to consult a lawyer. Just file a mechanic's lien and move on. It's not worth getting an attorney unless the amount owed is $100k+. I was told this 20 years ago by a lawyer.
I was a painting contractor. I was only treated like this once. It was General remodeling his own home. He tried to burn everyone who worked on it. He was heavily in debt and ended up getting foreclosured on and losing everything. I found out later that the contractor who made the cabinets beat the crap out of him about 6 months later.
Do you recommend a a concrete startup gets a contract made by a lawyer or get one free from online I really need help deciding what to do? DId you get a lawyer to make your contract or did you make yours ?
This customer is a complete turd who wasn’t planning on paying you in the first place, your gut feeling about this clown was right! The work you and your crew did is absolutely phenomenal, cheers
Your calm and to together attitude is nothing but short of amazing Your dad should be proud he has trained you not only as a Mason but a real man as well Congrats Mr Odell
Im a tile setter of over 20 years. If I can tell im dealing with one of these lunatics, I write a bill up to date with a note explaining why, and leave. It is very rare, but they either change their tune and apologize, or pay up. I don't ever let a bill get too far. I tell my clients they need to pay every Friday so everyone stays honest.
Keep us updated on the court process! That guy really messed with the wrong one. Hopefully he knows he's on youtube and he will pay up before the whole town finds out 😭😭😭
I've been a remodeling contractor for over 26 years, and can say your vibes on this guy are justified because it doesn't take too long to be able to spot these people right away and know how its going to end with them. Clients forget WE DEAL WITH THEM DAILY, and THEY only deal with contractors on occasion! We KNOW the game they play better than they do!
As a contractor myself, I have to admit that you did an amazing job. I find that sometimes, when I get a bad vibe from a customer, I will "over" quote, because I know it will be a difficult job. If I am wrong, and the customer turns out to be a good guy, I will give him a discount at the end of the job. 90% percent of time, I guess right.
It’s happened to my family. We don’t have much so having work done was a big deal. We treated the crew like family. We ain’t rich but we’re good people.
I had one customer who was impossible to please and ended up putting me out of a business that I had been in for over 40 years. Like you, I could see it coming. Some people can ruin your day, your week, and your business. It brought back so many memories watching your video. You couldn't have anything to please that person, believe me.
I’m a small town accountant. The bulk of my clients are family owned businesses. When I have them for meetings, some of the time is allocated for them to vent to me on the tough year they’ve had. It pains me to see grown ass men cry their eyes out because they can’t keep going. This scammer has a place below the ground reserved when his time comes.
Last winter was tough...I have a small company I try to run in the morning...I picked up a overnight job so I can get paid consistently..I don't cry...I roll up my sleeves.
Dude, your work came out top notch! Had that been my house, I would have zero issues recommending you and promoting your business. Btw, recording your work is the absolute best thing you can do to cover yourself in case of any possible litigation. It shows all the care and effort that went into the final product. If he's really a contractor and doesn't pay you, go file against his license.
I’ve been running my own excavating biz for 14 yrs. In the south. The concrete finish work you displayed was better than 90% of the concrete I seen done both commercial and residential.
Can’t remove it for unpaid bill,he’s is contractor, they will suspend his license, the customer is also a customer he will get his license suspended if he doesn’t pay

That by far is one of the best pours I’ve seen. 4500 psi concrete is overkill for this application. I quit contracting because of guys like this! Too many people like this guy out there…I hope that you were able to recover the remainder of your money
I came back to this and also subbed,I just couldn't let it go. Take him to court, don't leave anything out cover all bases list of pleased clients, contract, industry standards, ect. Hi Tim, I am sorry this happened to you. We are in a huge renovation (too far to ask you for help:)) and been screwed by contractors and complete amateurs on numerous occasions. You are a true professional. Your work always looks great and this guy has no reason to complain about anything. I would indeed go the legal way. You and your guys deserve better than this.
@@darrylpreston4974 only way he could remove the services rendered is if he could return the property back to the original way it was. and since that isnt possible he would then lose the lawsuit for the rest of his pay and be liable for all damages done to the property.

I’ve been a high end commercial photographer for 23 years now and one of the biggest thing I’ve learned through the decades is spotting client red flags. Sometimes the money is great and you are so geeked to have the big job that you overlook the red flags. I have dropped jobs and given back money the instant I realize that the client is going to be a problem. It’s just not worth it. Working in fear of your clients reactions, texts, etc is not working. There are difficult clients and then thieves. Recognizing the difference is the key to happiness and success in your business. At least that’s my experience! So sorry this happen to you brother. Keep pushing!
Full credits to you for responding well to all his planned entrapment. You got the gist of the grift possible, and gave him nothing but quality to complain about. Full credit to you for your conduct.
All he can really do is put a lein against the property. My best guess is this is a $7000-8000 job. I’m guessing the customer paid half. To hire an attorney it would cost 3000-4000. 2k retainer fee plus 200-300 an hour for each hour the attorney works on the case. So it’s not worth it to sue.
@@JtstienI'm more afraid of putting trust in the legal system than anything else. It's not the system we were promised, I know that much. Sue hoping to recover a couple grand and end up filing bankruptcy instead.
@@Jtstien The US has the "American Rule". Which pretty much means you pay your own court costs, even if you win. Creates a lot of these spots where its too expensive to sue someone. Insurance companies, the US Gov, anyone with deep pockets use this to make it really expensive to sue them.
hey mate, im a concreter in Australia, have watched your families videos since ya old boy was running it and have learnt alot of tips, normally dislike the way US goes about concrete but you fellas smash it, you did great mate came up a treat, most people cant comprehend doing that amount of work in 2 hours, dont let him get you down mate your team is great.
I'm a drywall contractor, and I've been doing drywall for over 40 years. My brother asked me to look at a patch job with him. Water damage on a ceiling. Someone tried fixing it before. When I walked into the house, the elderly woman said that she could see it in her sleep. I turned around and walked back outside. I told my brother that I didn't want anything to do with that job. He asked why? I told him if she could see it in her sleep, we could never satisfy her. He didn't listen to me. He went and fixed anyway. He never got paid for his work and was also stuck with material bill. You and your men did an awesome job on the slab! We have to watch out for the so-called religious ones and the rich ones.
He is just an arrogant thief - you should absolutely take this to court for the full payment, costs and damages. He had absolutely no intention of paying fairly. You and your guys deserve respect as the job is great!!
That concrete turned out perfect. 100% that guy never intended to pay you in full. Customers like this are exactly why I don't touch residential landscape projects any longer.
Something like this happened to me 37 yrs ago. Amazing thing is 2 weeks later all the tires on his four cars failed one evening. It was really a head scratcher.
I had a right twat of a customer years ago. He was high up in the Local Authority and in charge of housing etc. the kind of person you felt you could trust. At the start he said “I trust you Den, I don’t feel we need a contract do we? Anyway the job started. He kept changing things to what they were on the drawing saying his wife could not see how it was on a plan drawing but more when on site. One morning he says the four window openings we had in the brickwork needed moving to accommodate the furniture etc.etc. The he wanted a wall demolished and moved further to create a bigger room. Instead of the staircase as shown on the drawing he wanted it in another direction. Loads and loads of variations. Anyway come the payment time, all of a sudden he was not happy with the work and refused to pay. Kept fobbing me off each time. Eventually a letter arrived from a structural surveyor he had out to do a survey on my work. The report highlighted how poor I was as a Builder noting that the building was nothing like it should have been on the drawing. Pointing out the wrong position of the windows. Stated that a wall was not in the right location. Even highlighting that the staircase was facing in an opposite direction to that on the drawing. He got me hook, line and sinker. A deliberate sting. £27000 it cost me. I felt suicidal. He said he was going to bring another contractor in to finish the work and would use the money he owed me to pay the new contractor. You hear people talk about cowboy builders, well let me tell you there are far more cowboy clients than builders. Bastards.
yeah , that happens , then you demand full payment , when told you are not getting it you inform him that a "negotiator" will be in touch with him shortly
I’ve been running both boom pumps and line pumps for 6 years and this looks phenomenal, you guys did a great job! Don’t let this homeowner put any doubt in your work, it looks great 👍 keep it up bro
We've run a very small painting company for 45 years. Our hearts go out to this young man and his family business for having to deal with this. From experience, we can assure you that this is not the first time he has done this to someone - this is how he operates as a person. You can rest assured that when someone is playing around with the money that he's expecting from any of his clients - he can be a monster.
What a disgusting person that client is. I don’t think I would have been nearly as diplomatic. Reading people during the bidding process is an extremely important skill! The work looked great.
Good thing you recorded this job too, so it's evidence you can counter sue him when he says you did sub par work so you get paid if he doesn't pay you.
I think it came out absolute beautiful. You and your team do incredible work. Not only do you deserve 100% payment, but more because of the extra last minute changes and additional expenses. Take him to small claims court.
oh no we still will throw hands . there limitations to things I would have had a very candid conversation with him in private at minimum. he would walked away knowing I was going to be making his life a living hell.
He's paying you for the years of experience and knowledge you have accumulated over the years to complete an awesome job well done, no doubt if he did it himself his wife/kids and dog will be contemplating their life choices living with someone such as him. Keep up the awesome work as your videos certainly an inspiration and helps me with my concreting projects around the house even though not to the same degree compared to your finished product (that's where experience comes to play) but certainly very educational for a dummy like myself.
AS someone who's started doing masonry since I was eleven with my Grandfather and worked for over TEN other Masons . Plus being in my own business for over twenty years . I would say you guys did an impeccable job. Sometimes you run into people like this AH , POS 💩, who more than likely had this all planed out . Life and karma always catches up to these kinda of people .
Planned is what I thought too. He is typical of all of the nonpayers I have had the misfortune to deal with . I wonder how he treated the homebuilders .
I grew up in Floor Covering and HATED it. After 5 years, I then jumped ship into cabinets/counter tops for the next 20. I had only one customer that I still dislike. I called the GC of the kitchen remodel telling him his customer was CONTINUALLY in my way. I had scheduled 5 days for the cabinet install (hoping to be done in 3-1/2) and at the middle of day two I barely had anything installed yet. The guy was always telling me he was concerned about this or that, which I understood as most do that. I finally told him, "Your kitchen is mine for a week and at the end of that week if there is ANYTHING you don't like, record it on what we contractors call a "Punch list" and I will take care of any/all of those concerns. After you are completely satisfied THEN I give you my bill and you will pay it, so please save all your questions and concerns until then." At the end of day 3, I had to ask him to take his head out of the oven cabinet as I was about to cut an access hole for the electrical and didn't want him to get cut, or saw dust in his face. (YES it was that BAD). I called the GC again complaining that if the guy was on the job in the morning I would be pulling off the job and the customer could finish it himself... Morning of day 4 I showed up explained to the customer he and I couldn't seem to see things eye to eye so I would be pulling off the job. I would rather give that amount of work away and not have to put up with him anymore. Boy did CRAP hit the fan that day... though he was upset he said he would stay out, and to ensure he would, I hooked up a leaky air hose to my compressor so it would turn on and off constantly drowning him out should he talk. I also ran a 4-1/2 D.W. screw through a cabinet, drywall and into the pocket door part of the wall so he couldn't open that and stare at what I was doing all damn day... that REALLY set him off, BUT I finally got my 4 day job done in 6. He gave me a very reasonable punch list. I fixed what his concerns were, he paid me in full and I promised myself if I EVER ran into that type of person again I wouldn't wait 2 days before telling them how the job/process is suppose to work. I do the job, THEN they give me a punch list, I fix whatever they don't like and they pay me in full and leave. This way I would only lose ONE day of work if I walked away from a job. That was the only "bad" customer I recalled in cabinets, and never had to walk off a job.... I won't bore you with the sleazy ones in floor covering!!!

I work in a small engine/ small tractor repair shop. It doesn't happen often at all, but even once in a great while, if I get bad vibes (anyone in retail or a service industry knows what I mean) off someone who want's repair work done, I'll go ahead and pass and send them somewhere else. In the old day before I listened to my gut, it ALWAYS came back to bite me. You work long enough with people, you get the vibe and youre never surprised when they turn out to be a problem at the end.
WOW!!!! I have been following this channel for a few years, have been inspired by the work I have seen, have received feedback on questions I have asked, all that being said, the customer did not want to pay. Your work is top notch.
Concrete is an art and I do believe you guys did an amazing job by watching this video. I also imagine it was even better in person since our cameras don't really give us any justice especially doing an amazing job. Thanks for sharing man!!!!
It can be soul destroying when you 100% have pride in the quality of work and the service you provide for people. Reputation is everything in business and you guys obviously go about everything in the best possible way without cutting corners to deliver the best job for a fair price. The guy knew beforehand that whoever got this contract was going to be given the hardest time possible no matter what. Unfortunately there are many people like him whom instead of looking at life with a positive and happy attitude they just focus on negativity and making as many people as miserable as possible in the process. Keep up the awesome work and more importantly keep smiling guys, even though smiles don't pay the bills. This content will bring you much more to be happy about in the future. 👌
30 years I've done work like this and when the concrete is going off fast due to the weather or the mix it's panic time. The guys worked their balls off and it looks like a great job to me.When you do everything the customer wants and more but something inside your guts say's "he wants this job doing for nothing" it makes you feel sick inside.I really feel bad for you and the crew.☹
Great job on this one! Last minute change like that on the strength of the concrete is a classic way of trying to get at least a 50% discount. Interested if the contractor who poured that other maze of concrete in the back yard had a similar experience. Your patience is exceptional!
I'm sure that guy's life is a mess and you paid the price. I've been in business since 1985 and have seen a lot of concrete work. You and your team have always impressed me. Very professional and high quality
I would take him to court over this. This guy is a bully and needs to be dealt with. Do not put up with this, this is really awesome work. You two agreed on a price and you held up your end, he didn't deliver on his end. He already knew what he was going to do.
I wouldn't settle for less than 100% of the money! You and your guys jumped through all of his hoops and did a great job. It's not good for the word to ever get out that you can be beaten down on the price. Concrete work is some of the hardest work, none of it should be given away.
If he don't fight it and take the guy to court and file a lien on the home then he's a complete fool. Just showing the world he's a pushover and that future customers can pay whatever the want at the end of the job. This is insane
You have a lot to learn my friend. These people will make you have a nervous breakdown. I would never be silly enough to tell anyone the things I have done in the past to recover my payments. . His day will come when he will be taught a lesson. You need to toughen up or go bust.
I've been installing concrete for 15-20 odd years now, and I couldn't fault any aspect of your work. Great job, guys, true professionals' homeowner from the very start came across like an absolute peice of s**t. I hope you go on to do great things. Keep up the amazing work!

You have to learn to say no, sometimes I feel good when I say no thanks. Don't let him get away with it, take him to court.

@paulmillward9092 1 year ? You should probably stop talking about things you don't know anything about. It takes years to get good at working with concrete.
Man you guys worked so hard, I’ve been stiffed for large amounts. What’s most difficult is when you’re dealing with contractors that have paid you in the past and slowly build up a debt only to stuff you in the end. It’s a lesson learned about being firm, because in the end we lose if we don’t set up deposits correctly or put conditions on continuing work.
A "Contract" is a binding legal document, put a lien against his home for amount unpaid, plus 20% for legal fees. Being a so called "contractor" himself, he knows what's coming. Don't allow him to get away with anything.
When you put the lien against his house be sure to add interest on it that might be something that might make it your house in the end.
Here in Colorado, a lien can result in a foreclosure on a property! Install a lien asap!
Do it bro. Don't let him get away with this!
100% any lawyer can help you for very little. You need what's called a "mechanic's lein" in most states. That's exactly what you do.

very true i was in the music scene and got a bit popular underground, about 17 yrs ago a guy in california was basically trying to online bully me and threaten me. he did this for 5 yr straight and i just kept blocking him. eventually after 17 yrs he finally got as popular as i was 17 yrs ago and toured to one of my local clubs where i knew the entire staff, and my friend was the person who booked him. although such a long time had passed i confronted him and tried to ask to put everything behind us, the guy got a attitude and before he finished even yelling at me i pushed him really hardto get enough distance to swing at him and busted his nose wide open. he had to go in theback room and walk past the crowd and sit with the other musicians trying to get his nose to stop bleeding. it humbled him pretty quick. i realize its petty at the age of 43, but hey, whatever lol

You got that right. Soon as I smell an asshole, my estimate is so high they will get some other - sucker.

He may have other liens against him already ! If he has a habit of doing this !
It won't just follow him, if he ever sells the house, he has to pay the lien first. And if he files for bankruptcy the lien stays in place, he cannot get away from it.

You are a very patient gentleman. Outstanding job. Retired builder/general 37 years - you guys did great!
Full credits to you for responding well to all his planned entrapment. You got the gist of the grift possible, and gave him nothing but quality to complain about. Full credit to you for your conduct.
You let him get away with it... He never was going to pay the full price for the work. This is why you take a person like this to court
Can’t they make this guy pay court fees? I know it would probably be a risk if he loses. But how would he lose?

Way to be the bigger person!

Stay away from Scott Lucas in Houston, TX. He's been conning contractors for decades.

That looks amazing job and finish
After you are completely satisfied THEN I give you my bill and you will pay it, so please save all your questions and concerns until then."
At the end of day 3, I had to ask him to take his head out of the oven cabinet as I was about to cut an access hole for the electrical and didn't want him to get cut, or saw dust in his face.
I love that you put the screw thru so he couldn't open his pocket door. THAT was clever!

So sorry that you and your team had to go through all of this! Hope the rest of your customers are decent humans.
Great job on this one! Last minute change like that on the strength of the concrete is a classic way of trying to get at least a 50% discount. Interested if the contractor who poured that other maze of concrete in the back yard had a similar experience. Your patience is exceptional!

I would take him to court over this. This guy is a bully and needs to be dealt with. Do not put up with this, this is really awesome work. You two agreed on a price and you held up your end, he didn't deliver on his end. He already knew what he was going to do.
And obviously stiffs most contractors

You have to learn to say no, sometimes I feel good when I say no thanks. Don't let him get away with it, take him to court.
