My 2 cents as someone @ lv50 on hard rn - Make sure you have a healthy stock of shards and dampeners for the boss battles. - The order of team members is important to maximize the amount of press turns you can get (for instance always have a demon that can exploit the boss' weakness on the first slot so you can start generating your half turns from the start). - Get both the miracle that replenishes mp when magatsuhi is full and the one that allows demons to use items - Doing all the side quests and abcesses is often enough to keep up with the bosses level wise, there's little need to farm exp (and arguably not a good idea at higher difficulty) - Some demons I've found especially useful in key scenarios: Neko shogun, Oni (and every phys resistant demon after it), Kaya, Cironnpu, Quetzalcoatl (esp. at the end of the second daat map), Kurama Tengu (cheap and easy to fuse, access to acrobat kick), Belphegor, Kushinada, all Megami/Lady demons (competent healers), all special fusion demons (notably black frost). - Make sure you have some skills that make it easier to navigate (estoma, trafuri) - Feel free to use all your "important resources" (mp recovery items, beads, grimoires, etc) when the situation calls for it.
Nuwa's magatsuhi attack can be completely nullified using a very inexpensive item from the shop, and you can carry a total of 3 of these items at a time.
Only got like 2 hours so far but I'm just walking around looking at everything and checking out the world having a blast seeing some of the early game demons running around and trying to recruit them. When a boss is about to use their super attack, use an item that block all attacks of a certain element for 1 turn. They sell for 150 each and you can have a maximum of 3 in your inventory. If you identify the demon you get to know their skillset and some of them only use 1 or 2 elements. Better than guarding is using dampeners. This only takes up one of Nahobino’s turns as opposed to everyone’s if you guard, and will completely null the enemy’s attack, cutting their turn short. You can use a Spyglass to check out any boss’s skills, and the one they use after gathering Magatsuhi is usually their unique attack, and is always the same, so you can predict it and fully null it
Can confirm. Dark Dampener and Force Dampener made the Hydra and Nüwa fights pretty easy. And in mid to late game, the Physical Block (?) spell is sooo good.
Can work really well in some fights, but in others it's too much of a coin toss to abuse, unless you have a few miracles to enable it. Hydra, for example, uses both dark and fire as it's powerful attacks, so dampening one or the other is a literal coin toss to waste your turn. If (and this is later, as you cannot get it by Hydra) you gain the miracle to let demons use items, you can cover your ass on multiple attacks and stymie the Magatsuchi turns and other dangerous setups consistently.
Hydra was kicking my butt so many times, so I had to give my Nahobino and get demons that either had Resist Wind affinities, or an affinity for blocking Dark, which would end up skipping the Hydra’s next turn completely if it hit. I used Dampeners too, but I found that this was also a helpful strategy to get around certain bosses’ multiple attacks and skip them (let them hit you and get blocked/nulled/absorbed). The only annoying thing to deal with is that the pool of Essences and demons that you wanna use for each battle, you might not have available.

Only guard if you don’t have dampeners for some reason. The right dampener simply ends the bosses turn when they use their ability. Edit: don’t use those statues unless your part is full of important demons that you intend on keeping…
Especially playing on hard, and especially especially against bosses… _use nullifiers_ The boss will usually have one attack that’s more powerful, and it seems like they use that attack most often when they are in the crit-state. Make sure the last thing you do on your turn is use the nullifier that blocks that damage type. Not only will your party be unhurt, the bosses turn will end (or at least get shortened, if there are multiple enemies). You can carry three of each type. They’re also useful for covering the weaknesses of your demons against tougher regular monsters. This is my first ever game in the series and I started on hard. It’s been a bitch, but rewarding as I figured it out. (Doesn’t help that I’m simultaneously playing dragon quest XI S, and forgot to put on the setting that stops weak enemies giving Exp. It’s almost impossible not to overlevel in an already easy game. I do love it, though!)
This is my first mainline smt game. I just beat Hydra, saved walked around aimlessly and got locked in a deathmatch with Pazuzu. He swept my party immediately so I just let him kill me lol
So far so good! I’m about 5 hours in and what I am confused about is the essence or skill inheritance and how that works. Haha I’m sure I will get it in time.
Essence allows you to add skills to demons that would not normally have that skill. For example say you have a boss that is weak to ice but none of your demons have bufu as a skill. You can use the essence of a demon that DOES have bufu to teach it to a demon that does not.
Just make sure you don’t put the moves on demons that have a negative for that element or skill. Walked in on my roommate doing that the other day and had a good laugh 🤣
Ohh noo and here I was thinking I didn't need buffs and debuffs. I usually never use them in those kinds of games. Thanks for the tip I will definitely use them now
It’s only for when the enemy is in crit state. Even then, it really makes the most sense when you have a varied enemies attacking and can’t reliably negate them all with the item. Situational, but at least on Hard, it can save you and end a fight faster than anything else you might’ve done with that press turn
@@joearnold6881 I'm playing hard on the first playthrough and I find buff/debuff skills more efficient at defense than block is. Block is definitely like you said, the last thing I'd pick if I'm out of options but not because of critical states. I did not guarded for Nuwa, rather used affinity essence fusion to have the right resistance and force damper rather than guarding, which I find more effective

And I'm putting everything in just to learn Dia
there’s a DLC that costs £2.69($?) that raises the spawn rate of those sperm looking enemies that drop glory items. Makes getting glory alottt easier than relying on mimins
Focus on building either magic or physical Nahobino. The mc can be pretty powerful if you don't try to build a jack of all traits and only focus on one specific stat.
Hey David, thanks for this video. Im familiar with most of these tips as I have played a few of the persona games. But what abt stats? I would like to go for a Vit and Mag build is it alright?
Why wouldn’t it be? You’ll take less damage and have stronger magic. The other choice is to go phys, which can be technically stronger later on in the game, but less flexible. I don’t think it matters a huge amount. You can’t really break it (in either direction) The game balances out your stats for the main character pretty well and you’re just adding emphasis. You’re other choices, like miracles, I think are the first choice. Attributes seem secondary. Imo from playing half the game on Hard, ofc.
@@joearnold6881 Thanks for the reply and yea i think ill go for vit and mag for flexibility. Nice im playin on normal and I only have real experience with the persona games.
My tip is don't register a demon unless you really like its skill set or are doing a custom build. It's ridiculously in the early game to summon from the compendium.
What? No. Registering is free. You want the most up to date list of demons possible in case you need one for fusing (you’ll have a higher level, more skill choices, and better stats for the resulting demon) It’s a free resource. You’re keeping track of your demons as they’ve improved/been improved by you, and you get to reuse that stronger demon with picked skills (which can have been inherited from other demons even) every time you fuse. Even if you only rarely use them, for some reason (it only gets expensive if you’re buying all the demons in a fuse), you want the best ones available for when you do. There’s _no_ downside to registering every time you get the chance. Limiting just hurts yourself.
Something always felt off to me about the battles in the trailers… I realize now it’s because enemies don’t make noises when they are attacked. It’s a little detail, but for a game that is so much more battle heavy than persona 5, it would have gone a long way. Another thing that would have gone a long way too is utilizing the face buttons for the hud like in persona 5 rather than just copying tms’ bland UI.

Demons have potential in certain elements this is a number from 1 to 9 plus potential makes the skill better and minus potential makes it worse. it's displayed next to the skill I.e power punch +4 means his physical potential is +4
+4 means mp required for the skill is reduced by 4 -4 is the opposite so always choose skill that has + ignore - skill it consume more mp such a waste of mp

buffs and debuffs only good in SMT5, in earlier games it was waste of time really bother with them, you pretty much get to point you can exploit the game or just do insane amount of damage, but since director of EO worked on this game debuffs became valuable, you can cheese super hard fights just switching in and out demons in this game to get those buffs and debuffs put on demons

@@andrewkkerr8435 make sure your MC has resistance/null to the demons in the area you are in and use items, the best miracle I got was demons can use items as they are crucial, I used them the same as I do skills, some of the boss fights have taken hours to beat like a certain 3 stage fight that I had to try almost 15 times to beat, just keep at it and fuse all the demons you can!
Essences are like more customizable version of Strange Journey's Demon Source
Got an awesome steel book case, don’t be intimidated by the difficulty.
Yakuza judgement persona and your taste is immaculately
Btw, yeah you can get abilities with essences, but you need a certain miracle to get it's affinities
I finished True Ending in 2022. Spent the past couple of days wondering how, 'cause my team wasn't doing it here in 2024. It's a team of Vishnu and Anubis, and the other switches between Manananggal and Jack Frost. Yes, I finished True Ending using Jack Frost 😂. At any rate, I used those same teams and got better skills. Even still, There was still no room for error and it took a few tries for the RNG to go in my favor. Enemy just happened to use moves a couple of times that missed... L U C K Y ! Can't wait for SMT V: Vengeance!
Only guard if you don’t have dampeners for some reason. The right dampener simply ends the bosses turn when they use their ability.
Edit: don’t use those statues unless your part is full of important demons that you intend on keeping…
Thanks David for the tips. Cant wait to play e game tomorrow!!😁
Especially playing on hard, and especially especially against bosses…
_use nullifiers_
The boss will usually have one attack that’s more powerful, and it seems like they use that attack most often when they are in the crit-state.
Can't wait to get it when I get out of work
Ever since Matador in SMT3 I just sukunda everything
Im 20 hours in and have never used guard yet haha. I also started the 3rd zone now, so its not like Im stuck.
This is my first mainline smt game. I just beat Hydra, saved walked around aimlessly and got locked in a deathmatch with Pazuzu. He swept my party immediately so I just let him kill me lol
mine is downloading so hype
Best tip is save save save. You don't wanna die and have to back track a whole hour and a half.
So far so good! I’m about 5 hours in and what I am confused about is the essence or skill inheritance and how that works. Haha I’m sure I will get it in time.
I'm in the same boat if u find a video or data on it would u link it below
Essence allows you to add skills to demons that would not normally have that skill.
For example say you have a boss that is weak to ice but none of your demons have bufu as a skill.
You can use the essence of a demon that DOES have bufu to teach it to a demon that does not.
@@DaggerX5 thank you!!! I’m so afraid to look it up since I want to avoid spoilers haha! I appreciate it 😁
@@morcatna4767 No problem!! The best way to learn is to test it. Save your game, then buy some essences and do some experiments!
Just make sure you don’t put the moves on demons that have a negative for that element or skill. Walked in on my roommate doing that the other day and had a good laugh 🤣
Ohh noo and here I was thinking I didn't need buffs and debuffs. I usually never use them in those kinds of games. Thanks for the tip I will definitely use them now
Legends say Matador is still looking for this guy
Awesome tips and tricks! My copy just came in the mail :)
you can just use dampeners as well as guarding.
I never block since i usually find something more meaningful to do on my press turn.
I don't really fear them the same way outside of a few exceptions like 8 round attacks because I really had no items to negate their multiple rounds.
So yeah I'm already 20 hrs in the game and I need your help 😕
I did not guarded for Nuwa, rather used affinity essence fusion to have the right resistance and force damper rather than guarding, which I find more effective
How did you know when to force damp? Or did you just use one after every turn.
You do it when she charges her magatsuhi attack, sacrifice of clay is the real danger, you can buff and debuff to survive her other attacks pretty easily
@@JohnJohnson-ev9qn yeah I had reset my game to beat her, my build didn’t have enough vitality to even take one force attack
I really don't understand how the essence thing works can you make a video?
Do I need to set all the skills when I want to assign just 1? The list is always empty, and I've been filling it out each time. I'm confused if that's the right way.
Like I have;
1. Agi
2, Zen
3. Lunge
4.
And want to learn Dia my list appears
1.
2.
3
4.
And I'm putting everything in just to learn Dia
its normal, it’ll be blank and all your previous skills alongside dia will need to be assigned back manually
@@khaixa_ thanks
Yeah. It weird how they doing it. First time got me throw off.
At first you can only transfer 1 skill from the essence, you can add more through miracles, but there is also skills that cant be transfered
there’s a DLC that costs £2.69($?) that raises the spawn rate of those sperm looking enemies that drop glory items. Makes getting glory alottt easier than relying on mimins
Nah
Ain't nobody got time to pay to win.
Focus on building either magic or physical Nahobino. The mc can be pretty powerful if you don't try to build a jack of all traits and only focus on one specific stat.
Separating the corn out of my shit is a harder puzzle than what this game has to offer.
Save😢😢😢
the Matador is in there along with them fiends
Spyglasses for those teardrop demons, than hit their weaknes.
To be fair, compendium summoning is supposed to be the ultima ratio anyway. Going out into the world and "catching" the demon is far cheaper.
What?
No.
Registering is free.
You want the most up to date list of demons possible in case you need one for fusing (you’ll have a higher level, more skill choices, and better stats for the resulting demon)
It’s a free resource.
The attacks certainly feel as powerful as they do in P5, but that's minor thing
im seeing enraged smt fans coming
@@BuruKyu Saying all this because I want smt to do as good or better than p5. I know smt and persona are different, but I still think it’s fair to compare the elements they share. I do think there are some things from smt 5 that should be added to future persona games too like being able to jump and the battle animations.
@@t_bone2145 of course, i agree with that
How do I use talismans? I haven't seen a tutorial for it but I'm 8 hours in...did I miss something?
@Mario Christian okay so it's automatic I don't need to do anything, thanks Mario! 🙂 have a good weekend
I tried this on hard when it came out and that demon lady is a pain and for whatever reason I stopped playing right after I beat her going to pick this up on pc and beat it on hard
which one, nuwa? I did not guarded, rather I used a block wind item and got away with it.
@@user-zl1vf4me1p yes nuwa I was stuck until got all my allies to expose her weakness and even then she was pretty tough but makes sense because I didn’t block lol
@@travisleonhart3371 yeah tbh it took me 4 tries and I had to go build a new team with the fire elemental, my homie jack o lantern and a healer not weak to wind.
still more fair than matador at that point
I’m still pretty early but Can you save demons and their skills in a registry?
Yes in the demon compendium in the world of shadows!
But, did you play SMT Imagine? 🤔 I've gone back to playing it 😎 I love it. Best times 😊
since this game is on switch does scanning amiibo do anything at all?
I don't think so. They should have made all the amiibos as demons in the game though lol. Imagine scanning in Pokemon and animal crossing characters in SMT lol
@@JaredConnell that would be amazing lol
Hallo w can I change my resistance with essence? Somehow it doesn't work.
You can only do it with nahobino! You pick an essence, then select affinities!
I think its a miracle you get pretty early that allows you to do it.
@@vrageanalyst2931 yes I found it. thanks.
Newbie question, as I wait for the game. What does the +4 (example) mean when listed next to the skill? For example at 5:28 your screen shows skills. Power Punch +4? Maybe it’s explained in the game but I’m just curious while I keep waiting for it to be delivered.
Demons have potential in certain elements this is a number from 1 to 9 plus potential makes the skill better and minus potential makes it worse. it's displayed next to the skill I.e power punch +4 means his physical potential is +4
+4 means mp required for the skill is reduced by 4
-4 is the opposite
so always choose skill that has +
ignore - skill
it consume more mp
such a waste of mp
@@EveLusiana good to know, thanks!
@@Iceboltdoom thanks!
@@EveLusiana its not always linear for the cost reduction. I just got Agilao +1 and it reduces my MP cost by 2 instead of 1. So it also depends of the skills as well
Didn't guard on first boss used Dark Damping gem
anyone got some pro tips for hardmode? I've been putting points into agility/magic so far. stregnth doesn't seem very good until later in the game unless you learn charge
You want to committ to physical or magic.
If you're doing magic like I think you are, get all the almighty boosts you can
Also vitality better than agility
Question it’s my first time playing a mainline smt game but have played all personas…now the demons that wur in p5 I see are in here. Do they have same weaknesses and affinity’s to
No, even between different persona games Demons may have different affinities
I need help because I am trying to get to the next boss and I'm on castle 3rd Stratum and I'm tryna go up but I'm stuck 😰
aaaa i still dont know whether to go magic or strength im leaning toward magic tho
So this is the game for pokemon players who want a difficult game
Not a tip - but David i enjoy your channel so much. I subscribed maybe a week ago and i appreciate your content! Thank you for the tips bc i have been getting my ass whipped in smt 5! Lol.
Thank you for your support christopher! 😁
I have to wait two weeks before I can afford this game! It’s killing me, but I bet it’ll be worth it!
so SMT V is like SMT III + SMT IV
Thanks again for the tips!
I am so surprise some people already have 60+ hours.
he has a review copy
Not sure if it was said, but piggyback on your nuwa tip. Just go into that fight resisting force or use a force repel item when she gathers for her special. It's a force element attack, so you can just negate it
Which is the stats cap? 100?
buffs and debuffs only good in SMT5, in earlier games it was waste of time really bother with them, you pretty much get to point you can exploit the game or just do insane amount of damage, but since director of EO worked on this game debuffs became valuable, you can cheese super hard fights just switching in and out demons in this game to get those buffs and debuffs put on demons
Nuwa is mad easy when you have taunt on shiisa
I'm trying to figure out what the sun gauge does in the top right... does anyone know? I feel like I either missed the game explaining it to me or it hasn't yet.
From what I understand, some of the moon cycles affect which demons will join your group. I had an encounter with a demon where it wouldn’t join because of the full moon.
If you combine demons during a full moon there is a chance of something awesome happening....
DAMPENERS! SO IMPORTANT
See why cant the SMT fandom be this nice,I tried saying I wanted to play SMT3 but they told me to not even try because its nothing like persona....I know that 😦
Fuckem. Play your heart out my dude
This video is so helpful. Thankyou! I was a little lost but this helps so much
SMT IV was a bitch compared to SMT V, lots of changes compared to IV/Apocalypse, basically Nocturne 2
thanks
thumbnail demon name pls?
But 60 hours is the equivalent of like 10 minutes in shin….for reals
I'm halfway through the game and I finally look up a guide to stop sucking, but than again I feel proud of how far I am on my first smt game
What build?
"uh-poth-ee-oh-sis"
Any good build guide?
Everyone keeps saying this game is hard, am I just playing the wrong game or are y'all not Mitama farming?
Dude Nuwa is super annoying. All my demons r lvl 22 with fire skills but it's still not enough
My god it piles up
