  • In this video, I explain the difference between the Scan N Cut DX cutting machine and other electronic cutting machines and why I prefer the SNC. Then I provide a step-by-step tutorial to cut fabric for applique quilts with the DX.
I have the SNC DX225. The affiliate link below is for the SNC DX 125 at Amazon which does NOT support the 24" mat or the roller feature like the 225. If you want the SNC DX 225, please contact Allbrands at the link below.

I am just starting looking in to making things with cut fabric and came looking for information but now I will dive further into my Silhouette functions (AND the Scanner/multifunction printer) that I forgot about BEFORE I go further into possibly getting a whole new machine. Especially since I have so many programs that also do these functions.. just a few steps and spending less money:)

Your comment is one of the reasons I make these types of videos. When I got my first cutting machine I was intimidated by it too...and I work in computers! If I was scared of it, I can only imagine how I would feel if I didn't have a clue what button to push. It took me months to figure it out and I actually signed up for classes. Now I'm sharing a bit of that knowledge with you. If necessary, just follow the video bit-by-bit and stop it all along the way as needed. You'll get this!

Hi Becky. Happy New Year from Indiana. Thanks so much for the videos that you make. I've been quilting for a couple years and have done some applique but have wanted to do more. Cutting by hand is a bore and takes too much time. My brain won't stay interested...it starts planning and designing all the future things it wants to make. lol ;) Was trying to decide between the big 3 and stumbled across your channel....LOVE IT!!! You're such a hoot!!
Well, thanks to your information, I have decided that SNC DX225 is perfect for my needs, wishes and future dreams. I want to start with applique but know I will probably get into vinyl for some wall decor and as the grand-babies arrive I'm sure we will get into all kinds of fun crafts.
Now...to save the money and go visit local dealer in town that I never knew was here. Currently using a Babylock Solaris & Palette 11 and hope it will work with my what I have. I hate to buy more software if it isn't needed. Learning one piece of software is enough. LOL

I didn't use mine right away but when I did it wouldn't cut completely. I took it to a class and my instructor said to have it serviced. I ended up getting a new machine from Brother because there was an issue with the calibration. The new one works great and my grandson thinks I'm an awesome grandma because we can do so many crafty things with it. 😁

Yesterday I happened upon your video for the machine embroidered composition book cover, and was fascinated -- because I have a new Bernina 770 with the embroidery module. And machine embroidery is totally new to me. I really learned a lot from just that one video. Plus I was drooling over your studio and all your "power tools."
So... today, after I opened my newly purchased ScanNCut SDX135 Pro, I started looking at some "newbie" videos. Lo and behold, on the "up next" list, I see that YOU had a video for the ScanNCut! And the reason I got mine is the same reason you like yours - for cutting applique pieces. In my case, I designed a pillow, with applique and quilting, that features a specific camper van. After I made one for myself, everyone in my camper Facebook group wanted me to make one for them. Hmmm... I thought, how could I make this easier, rather than tracing and cutting out 12 different pieces for each pillow, over and over?? Accuquilt? Ugh, custom dies. Cricut? Not sure. And then I found the ScanNCut, which sounded like exactly what I needed. I can scan my own shapes in. Now, my machine has the autoblade that detects the material being cut. And supposedly it will cut up to 3mm of thickness. What I HOPE is that I can cut several pillows' worth of pieces at a time. I was thinking also of using Hotfix Adhesive so that I might not even have to stitch along the edges of the raw-edge applique. By any chance have you tried Hotfix? The steps you showed here are ideal for helping me see how I can proceed with my applique pillow project! Thanks. And any advice or suggestions are welcome!

WoW! What an amazing lesson. I've owned the SNC since 2014 have one of the original models which I still use. I do not own the DX but I am going to give this method a try on my machine (saving to USB as it has no wireless on the original) I had not thought about scanning for canvas from paper patterns that's a pretty amazing deal because when you scan from your printer to pdf or image then bring it into other softwares you normally end up with a double line around each shape and have to remove them. I am definitely going to see if that double line is avoided with my older SNC and Canvas.
Next, your point on using the fatter areas to lift your fabric is right on, one might have also pointed out that if they try with thinner areas it is easier to "break" that line and the shape ends up in two or more pieces :/ but it's easier to pull it up when you start in the fatter part of the shape. You've definitely gained a new subscriber in me and I'm going to recommend this video when I'm asked in the future about cutting fabric on the SNC. Thank you so much!!

You should be able to cut quilting cottons with the regular blade. I don't have a rotary blade it and works great!

Thank you so much for this video. You have made me want to purchase a Scan N Cut DX. LOL I want mine to use for cutting vinyl so I can embellish my own t-shirts, like you did for the t-shirt you wore in your video.

@@PowerToolsWithThread I finally broke down and purchased my Scan N Cut DX yesterday. (I bought the Disney model.) What brand/type of heat transfer vinyl do you use to make the designs for your t-shirts? I need to purchase some vinyl so I can start making projects. I heard that different brands are harder to weed than others. Any suggestions you can make would be appreciated. If you have an affiliate link, please provide it. Thanks again for your Scan N Cut video Becky!

@@kristi8220 Congrats on your new SNC DX!! So fun! Here's a link to Cricut HTV that works very well. I stay away from the Sport Flex because that can only go onto nylon tshirts and isn't designed for cotton. Enjoy! Lots of color choices in this link. amzn.to/2SaIVFO

Just get in there are start poking around. :) There are a lot of free projects on the Brother Canvas too or even inside the machine. Just start making a few simple shapes with paper on the teal low tack mat and you'd be surprised how easy it is.

Thank you. I have just purchased a new Innov-is XJ1 and it came with this scan and cut. I was wondering what I would use it for. Now I know. I do a lot of applique and this will be perfect for cutting out all my pieces.

Congrats on your new machine! You'll love it. I have an entire playlist on ScanNCut. You definitely need to check out how to turn that .fcm file from the SNC into an embroidery appliqué design! Check this out! GAME CHANGER!

I just found your channel - great videos! I notice you have the older model SnC sitting next to your DX, and that's the one I have (650W). Do you notice much difference between the older and newer versions in their ability to cut fabric? I've never been all that impressed with the one I have, and have only done a few fabric projects. Love it for vinyl and paper, though!

Fabric support sheet: that goes onto the mat before the fabric is placed fabric side down, so when does it come off the mat? I am so totally confused.
