  • This is the 10th generation iPad, Apple’s latest ipad in their budget lineup. It’s got a whole new design change and an all new price tag. Yeah. Is it worth picking up? Let’s find out with a little review.

    2:33 The Confusing Part
7:37 Who is this for? (Conclusion)
Out of the box you get a usb c to usb c charging cable, a charging brick and the ipad itself. The ipad takes on the design of the iPad Pro and Air lineups with flat edges and backs, and it removes the headphone jack along with the design change. But it does have both a landscape front facing camera orientation which no other iPad has. The screen size and physical dimensions are very similar to the iPad Air. What sets this ipad apart though is a lower $450 starting price tag and the older A14 chip vs the M1 that’s inside the iPad Air. Beyond that it has the details of every other ipad. A nice to look at Retina display, a singular 12mp back camera, a fingerprint sensor on the top right and speakers on the top and bottom of the ipad, 5g support for the cellular model and a usb type c port for charging. Overall the body got a much needed design update and is now consistent with the rest of the iPad lineup.
Using the ipad 10th generation is fine. Everything feels smooth when scrolling and in general usage. And it’s what you expect out of an ipad. The speakers sound decent, not as great as the ipad pros but this is half the price. The back camera takes decent pictures, and that’s really all you need out of a tablet. With the front facing camera now in landscape mode, it makes it easier to multitask while you're on a call and works better when attached to keyboards. Battery life isn’t an issue and it lasts as long as the other ipads, and it passes the Genshin impact test with flying colors giving smooth gameplay even at medium settings, 50fps. I think most people who use this ipad will find that it will do most of the things they want out of their ipad just fine. So when it comes to being an ipad and doing ipad things, this thing does the job and it does it well.
So, now that I’ve cleared how I feel about this iPad, I think there’s been a big question mark about this device. If this ipad is so confusing, who is this iPad for then? Like, what customer will look at this and see a perfect fit. Despite some of it’s compromises I think there’s still a market for an ipad like this. It’s for someone who wants an ipad that’s nicer than the 9th generation ipad and is willing to pay a higher price but doesn’t care much about using the signature ipad accessories such as the apple pencil 2 or magic keyboards. And if all of that is good enough for you to personally purchase it at the $450 price tag then feel free. So, if those upgrades from the 9th generation, and deficiencies from the air makes sense for you, it’s still a decent ipad. But could I at least recommend you shop around first? There may be some older 2020 iPad Airs that have slightly better accessory support still available for purchase.

I’ve been looking for an iPad to buy and honestly the 10th gen fit my bill really really well, I’ve had it for a couple weeks now and can tell you that the Apple Pencil support is not a big deal at all, you only have to charge the pencil maybe once every couple days depending on your usage and with the right case it sits on top of your iPad in a convenient spot at all times. I paired it with the Logitech combo touch and it became exactly what I needed. I didn’t want to invest into an air or pro because I also don’t need the extra power because I have a MacBook Pro for that, and I also didn’t want to get the base 9th gen iPad, so opting for the 10th gen just happened to work out perfectly for me, I use it everyday and it gets done everything I need it for really efficiently.

Same here, I just need a decent iPad for studying, and I honestly dont care about the apple pencil not fitting, plus I don't mind doing extra steps to pair and charge the apple pencil. For me I’m happy with my iPad 9. I’m an artist on a budget and yet Im still able to make great illustrations on a 10.2 inch screen. The ONLY reason why I’d even think about an ipad 10 would be the larger screen. Having said that 7/10ths of an inch isn’t that big of a difference to me. So , I’m gonna stick with my ipad9 and my Apple Pencil 1. It’s fine folks. Oh and one more thing….I STILL love the headphone Jack and home button.

    • @trevinodude
      @trevinodude Год назад +14

I’m also happy to stick with my iPad 9 that I got in January. I’m no artist, but I primarily use my iPad as both a tool for media consumption and as a note taking machine, and for the purpose of taking as many notes as I do (which is a lot) the 10.2 inch screen still gives me all the room I need to comfortably write down said notes, not to mention the fact that for people like me who use it for more school type reasons, the Logitech Crayon is an easy to recommend stylus for students. I use it all the time since I didn’t need the Apple Pencil’s pressure sensitivity (which I imagine is quite useful for artist though). Thing is, on principal alone, I don’t think the iPad 10 does enough for students or artist to switch. The Apple Pencil experience is jankier with the need for a dongle (which is circumvented if you have a Logitech Crayon to be fair). Why pay more when the bigger 10.9 inch screen is still non laminated anyway? Not to mention the fact that the older design’s headphone jack is still quite useful for me since I’m also a musician, so being able to use my headphones while using the iPad to learn new music without worrying about said headphone dying on me is a HUGE stress reliever. All in all… the iPad 10 isn’t terrible by any means, but for all it’s worth, my iPad 9 is still the perfect tablet for my specific needs.

The whole apple pencil fail is ridiculous imo, but I feel like I found a good way around it by getting the logitech crayon instead of an apple pencil. It's a lot cheaper to get the iPad 10th Gen + the Logitech Crayon instead of an Air + the Gen 2 Apple pencil, and while the Crayon will have to be charged seperately, that's still miles better than having to go through the whole ordeal with Apple Pencil Gen 1 + dongle + cable

As a iPad 10th gen and Apple Pencil first gen user, it’s not that bad. The adapter is just for connecting and charging. The pencil won’t work when it’s plugged in. I have a case that holds my pencil on the side of the iPad. When thinking about cost. The iPad 10th gen with 256gb plus the first gen pencil costs less than the iPad Pro 64bg and the 2nd gen pencil. The second gen pencil costs around 130 dollars alone.

I also gather that Apple has made it much easier to access your files, so I plan on just moving some stuff to my computer or an external hard drive if it ever gets too much (another advantage of the USB-C port - I already have all the cords)

It is a poor design choice but I still don't mind the extra steps personally. I paid about 596$ for the IPad 10 with the g1 pencil, and adapter. The IPad air with the g2 pencil was definitely out of my price range but 122$ ( I think ) more isn't that bad for what you get in retrospect.

This. I'm debating between this or the Air, and while I intend to buy a pencil for whichever I end up getting the pencil situation does not upset me because I've already checked and seen that the first gens being sold now come with the dongle. I owned a gen one pencil a while back but gave it to my aunt when I gave her my iPad Mini 5. I actually prefer it attacking with a dongle hooked into USB see rather than poking out of the ipad itself. Sure, popping the Pencil 2 on to charge is quicker and easier, but I'm not sure if it's $225 CDN (the cost of getting 256 storage and the $35 more for the newer pencil) more convenient. I realize that's not the only difference between the two ipads, but at the end of the day what depends is what the consumer needs. Buying more than one needs is wasting money one could have used elsewhere. The immediate argument that itt's the 9th or the Air seems like more of an internet fad, imo.

@@markpomerhn76 if you go into apples comparison, iPad Air 5 has dual band Wi-Fi antennas, while the iPad 10th gen doesn’t. It also includes a laminated display + anti reflective coating, which the iPad 10th gen also doesn’t have. In addition, the 1st generation Apple Pencil is only compatible with the 10th generation; which means you have to get a $9.00 USD adapter just to charge it, since the new iPads all have a USB-C charging port. Plus, Walmart has it for $560.00, and Best Buy had it on sale for only $500.00 (which is where I got it). Personally, the iPad 10th generation is sort of new, yet somewhat old. New design, but old body. It’s basically a copy of the iPad Air 4, which supports the 2nd gen Apple Pencil and has a laminated display and anti-reflective coating. It’s only $20.00 more than the 10th gen. If you look on RUclips, a lot of tech RUclipsrs consider the 10th generation iPad to be one of the most confusing that Apple has made so far. I know people have different preferences, but for me, the iPad 4th generation or 5th generation just seems like a better choice for a closer cost.

@@KINOK02864 gig is not enough storage for the future. You need to have at least 128 gig but preferably 256 gig and that's why I got the 10th gen with 256 gig for $599.00. Honestly I ordered both the Air5 and Gen 10 and I ended up liking the floating double glass screen vs the laminate screen. The chassis is noticeably thicker on the 10 gen vs the Air5. In an independent test color accuracy is better on the Gen 10 vs the Air5. Don't get me wrong they are both beautiful machines but in my comparo I liked the 10 gen over the Air5. I tested the Pro model which is my favorite model but that one is $899.00. How can you survive with only 64 gig of storage?

    • @KINOK028

for me I don’t need that much. I only have 3 additional apps, and that’s really all I need. I survived with. 64GB for my iPhone 12, and it worked completely fine. Plus, for me, the Apple Pencil I use a ton for drawing, and I usually lose stuff super easily; that $9.00 adapter is going somewhere under the couch after just 30 minutes of getting it. I completely understand other people’s preferences, but for me, I prefer the air.

I was confused about the older pencil, because it does not fit in my 10th generation. After watching your video, I am thinking of returning this for the pro. I loved the color, but it is old and new and pricey. I would rather attach my pencil to charge magnetically, since the port does not work this would have been a great way to incorporate the newer pencil.

On the other had if you use your iPad for yourself only and use earphones, it may not be a factor. But if you use zoom a fair amount and are listening to a class with a someone else or a few other people, it’s nice to have the improved sound. I don’t yet know which iPad has the better mic for speaking.

The only reasons I'll still wind up getting this are because trading in my current iPad, I'd get a $350 credit from Best Buy, which will reduce my price to closer to $250 with tax, and because the color is beautiful (I do tend to go for cases with transparent backs). The color is simply beautiful. I own both an Apple Pencil 1st and 2nd generation, so I'll revert back to using my 1st generation Apple Pencil for this iPad, hold onto my 2nd generation pencil and trade in this new iPad for the new iPads that are rumored to drop in 2024 for a higher trade in credit than my current model would get.

Nice Review!. I cannot believe all the drama with the Apple Pencil 1. I bought on Amazon an replacement of the original cap of the pencil that convert the male Lighting on a female connector for $9, and I charge the pencil using the charger of my iphone (It seems everybody that is reviewing the Ipad 10, forgot the iphone is still using a lighting connector). I tried to connect the pencil with the adapter to the ipad 10, and it did not recognize the pencil, so I had to order the $9 original adapter to Apple just to pair (total $18 on adapters, but this is cheaper that buy a new apple pencil), but after the initial pairing, I will never the apple dongle, and I will charge the pencil with the female lightning adapter. I am very happy that apple decided to use the original pencil, since I already had one on my Ipad 9th, so I did not expend more on a Pencil version 2.0. I think the reviewers forgot that many people like me is upgrading from old Ipad, and we have already the pencil 1 generation. In fact, I hope Apple for the Ipad 11, will still use the 1 pencil generation, so I don't have to expend more money on an accessory that i already have. The best way is designing an Ipad that recognize both generations of pencils, I hope Apple does that in the feature. I am very happy with the Ipad 10, and I would never buy the ridiculous expensive original keyboard, I rather buy a generic one on AliExpress. Thanks.

The thing is, even people who don’t have iPhones get iPads, which is a huge reason why the Apple Pencil drama is such a big thing as it is for tech reviewers. Sure, for people like us who has an iPhone, it’s not that big a deal. We have an alternate solution to the whole dongle thing when it comes to charging the Pencil, but iPhone users is not the only consumer base that iPads reach. Heck, when the iPad 2 was new, I had an iPad 2 before I even got an iPhone. I was using LG phones at the time.

I already have a large iPad Pro and Apple Pencil 2 but I lost the case with the keyboard. After receiving a 10th gen iPad for Christmas, I liked the smaller size and decided to keep it but I wanted a case that has a track pad and could be opened for writing with a pencil (folio style). I returned and exchange the 10th gen for an iPad Air TWICE because the Magic Keyboard cannot open flat for writing with the pencil without taking the iPad out of the case entirely. I know, it sounds crazy, but I chose the iPad based on the type of case I wanted. I ended up sticking with the 10th gen, buying a Pencil 1, and the Magic Keyboard Folio all so I can take notes in meetings. Almost returned it again because I canʻt stand the USB-C charging cable for the Apple Pencil but I have until Jan. 8 to return it if I canʻt find a work around. I did find a TiMovo standup pencil charger on Amazon that holds both pencil and cap so they donʻt get lost while charging. Will see how it all works out by the 8th!

I’m getting one mainly so my Dad can have my iPad Air 3. His iPad Mini is vintage and can no longer run the apps he needs. My theory on why this iPad has USB-C but requires you use the Lightning-based Apple Pencil 1? Apple intend for this to be the LAST iPad to use Apple Pencil 1 so they can still get rid of all their Pencil 1s before eventually launching the iPad 11 that’ll use the Pencil 2.
I have before gotten on with tech that isn’t the best: the Nokia N-Gage wasn’t a well designed cellphone but being a gamer who never had a cellphone before, keep in mind it came out just before I turned 16, it still served me well as my first phone! (When I started college in the spring of 2006, Mom felt I need a “proper” phone so she gave me her old Motorola)
If I had more money, I would’ve gotten an iPad Pro. I know I don’t REALLY need all those Pro features but I mainly want it for the 1TB onboard storage, that no other iPad has! Apple could release a new iPad that goes back to the 30 pin connector and has the same screen technology as the original iPad but if it has the latest processor and 1TB onboard storage, I’d still buy it!
Then again, you are hearing this from someone who recently shelled out £1,649 for a 1TB iPhone 14 Pro! (Said sum of money included £200 I won in a competition!)
