If I had to choose between these two models I would always go for the Air. Not only for the pencil 2 support but the M1 chip will give you stage manager and external monitor support as soon as iPadOS 16.2 becomes available.
I got the iPad Air 5 shipped new open box 450. I was goining to get the iPad 10 but I had iPad 8 and it disappoints 2 gen later so if I got the 10 well…. M1 all day I get today they are very close but tomorrow we will not be able to say that
Doesn't this behavior of Apple today remind you of when Steve came back to the company and there were dozens of products on the line, and he just closed practically all of them to prevent Apple to bankrupt ?
There are WAY too many iPads in the range. There should be a budget 10/11 incher, a better specced 11', a Pro model 11/12 incher and a well specced 8" mini. Nothing else.
This is one of those reviews i was looking for. Finally someone puts it into all perspectives. Not all of us are using a pencil on the iPad and most reviewers concentrate solely on that, bashing the 10th gen, dismiss it completely. But your review convinced me that the 10th gen is the better buy vs the Air, thanks for that!
I agree with you. I bought an iPad 10G Wifi in Australia. I'm a first-time iPad User. I use it for taking notes, general browsing, and YT Kids for my child. I don't miss the Center Stage functionality at all. I bought the Logi Crayon to write and Logitech ComboTouch as the keyboard with the $ I saved.
If you don't use the apple pencil I still believe the 9th gen iPad is a way better bang for your buck. You're looking for the basics and budget only, and apart from the newer design it doesn't offer much more than that.
I would always choose the air over the 10th gen, not only for Apple Pencil 2 support, but bc of the laminated display and M1 chip. That being said, I am hoping that apple finds a way to give the Air and Pro models a landscape camera with Apple Pencil 2 support
No doubt the next air model with get the landscape camera, I think they hold this stuff back to force upgrades and leave themselves room for upgrading their tablets. It makes perfect business sense, but why does a lower price 10 gen model have some better features like landscape camera, and the more expensive air doesn’t?
@@Therejectionartist because these products are designed years in advance and the standard iPad was due for a design change. The Air and especially the pro will get the landscape camera this year I’m sure.
I was intending to buy the IPad (10th gen) but pleasantly found that Best Buy this week has the IPad Air for $499 which is a huge $100 discount. So it was a no brainer to buy the Air.
After so many reviews raving about the iPad Air I was relieved to see an appropriately critical review that also highlighted some of the key differences between it and the 10th gen iPad. The only place I might disagree with is that the M1 chipset will likely help the upgraded software run more efficiently (and hopefully longer that the A14) as this iPad gets older. Otherwise, I really like that the camera on the 10th gen is more appropriately located for use in video calls if I'm using it as a laptop. The other option is getting the iPad Air and using another keyboard that allows use in portrait mode... What folio keyboard allows this? Suggestions?
@@nickbodily8495i think the commented meant one where the keyboard is located on the side the usb-c port is, which the logitech combo touch isn't. i dont actually think such thing exists yet as there probably isn't much demand for it
You had me ROLLING with this review! “They both have cameras, that you probably don’t use anyway!” 😂😂😂😂😂😂 I like pink and I’m cheap! I’m going with the basics!
I ended up with the Air 5 and i got the Apple Pencil and Logictech keyboard portfolio (it has the function keys and great keyboard at half the price of the Magic Keyboard) for myself. I will end up getting the Gen 10 for my mom so she has a reliable device for when my sister want to FaceTime her (she like the camera position).
I don’t know about the performance gap between these two during normal use,but I did notice a huge difference in performance when I was editing and rendering some videos…m1 is a beast compared with a14
I recently upgraded from a 6th gen to the 5th gen air and whilst I think it’s brilliant and a huge upgrade, I would’ve preferred to save a bit of money and buy the 10th gen had it been out at the time. Yes it’s a controversial opinion, but I’ve never used the Apple pencil nor have any intention to so this issue doesn’t bother me, nor does the unlaminated screen. At the end of the day I wanted an iPad with the newer full screen design that uses usb c and one that allows me to do lots of writing and the new keyboard looks better then the rest. My only real criticism of the new 10th gen is the ridiculous price increase from the 9th gen
I have a 6 year old iPad that i traded for $65.00. The iPad cost me 419.00 less $65.00 so I paid about $365.00. I was hesitant at first but I figured I only need this for watching movies and emails web surfing and the likes. It’s pricey but I hope it will be like my iPad 5th gen that I was able to use for 6 years. I didn’t get the 9th gen because I want the usb c. So basically I skipped on the 9th gen because of the screen size and the usb c.
i feel again that this may be an unpopular opinion - as a user of an ancient 2017 10.5in ipad pro + 1st gen apple pencil, the 10th gen looks pretty good except for the colours. i use my ipad primarily to watch movies, youtube videos, emails, some web surfing i.e. *exactly* what you said ipad users do, & have realised that i don’t exactly need a pro for all this. that sald, i’ve only ever used my ipad pro so there’s no comparison for me. as for losing the pencil’s cap - it is magnetic & attaches itself to the side of the ipad. of course with disappearing bezels maybe it’s different now but that’s what i do. i’ve also done minor editing work on M365 apps / acrobat & everything’s been great. i was inspired by david hockney & had intended the ipad pro + pencil to do more digital art but it never went very far 😅 all this makes me wonder if the 10th gen is for those like me who jumped at getting the pro before realising that an « ordinary » version would do very well too. & we don’t even have to get a new pencil ! i have no incentive to get a new ipad but desperately need to replace the smart keyboard.
I owned the 10.5 Pro and changed recently to the 10th gen. iPad due to the facts you describe above. Surprisingly the new one is superior in pretty much any field despite speakers and anti reflective coating.
I’d go for the iPad Air because it has a better keyboard (sits on your lap, backlit keyboard, and enables you to charge while using a USB C accessory), and better CPU (M1 Chip which means the device is future proofed for at least 5 years).
You are totally right. Too many variants now. I own a 12.9 iPad Pro 2021 version and looking at getting an iPad for my 8 year old son. The models I was looking at were iPad 9, 10 Air 2022 or iPad Pro 11 inch 2021. I opted for the Pro 11 inch 2021. The reason I finally opted for this is the refresh rate, a compromise of internal storage (128gb) Face ID, quad speakers were most of the reasons why I decided on this,
Hey joe I was thinking of getting the iPad Pro 2021 , do you think it’s worth it for 700? I want something to last me for a long time, is it worth it for the speakers and everything like that?
@@GiantsJets718 I was lucky and picked up a brand new one for £450! 700 is a lot of obviously a lot of money, it depends what you will use it for ? The cost will increase towards £1000 if you need any accessories. I think generally most apple products have a decent life span if you look after them and consider the capability of the internal software. My Mid 2014 MacBook Pro is still going strong and I stopped upgrading the MacOS a couple of years ago
I know I’ll never need an Apple Pencil- and I mostly just use my iPad as a streaming device with basic web browsing and texting. Also like that it includes the second screen ability from the Mac. Honestly it was hard to justify the added cost for the iPad Air, so I went for the 2022 ipad 🤷🏻♂️. Works for me!
If anybody is wondering what ipad to actually get and don’t wanna spend too much money and not waste money. Get the iPad Air 5th generation or the iPad mini 6th generation. Both are great options for a tablet that your using for creative purposes or even just gaming.
I feel like if you don’t care about the pencil than save the money and get the 10th gen and only if you really want the new design. I really feel like wanted to get this out at $399 and couldn’t so they kept the 9th gen in the line up. Long term I think the plan will be drop the 9th get this to $399, drop the 11in pro and maybe do a 14 or 15in pro. So the future line up will be Pro with M series, Air with M series -1 (gen behind the Pro), Mini with an A+ chip (chip that is in the iPhone Pro series that year) at $449, Base iPad with A chip (from the base iPhone) for $399
I’m definitely a “ Steve Jobs Era “ iPad owner ! They are bought refurbished, I own a Mini 2 ($70) Air 1 ($100) and an Pro 1 9.7 ($150) the Pro is my favorite! I don’t mind the “ Classic Design “ of them. They look and work really well. The Pro 1st. Gen still iPad OS 15.7 👍 I’ll be sticking with these great devices 😎❤️ If I were to buy a NEW iPad, it would be the 9th Gen that Amazon is selling for $279, sorry Apple.
I currently have an iPad 9th Gen and I bought an Apple Pencil and a case that is designed to hold the pencil. I’ve had them about a year now and I think I’ve used the pencil twice. On the other hand I’ve had to quite a few video calls and meetings and I don’t like the off center camera view. So, I might be one of the few people who would be interested in the 10th Gen, especially with the nice keyboards, but right now, the 9th is fine.
Laminated screen does not mean a smaller gap. It means no gap at all. That results in a much reduced glare. The entry-level iPad has a non-laminated screen because it’s geared towards young people (kids, teenagers), and old people (older parents and grandparents) who just need a basic iPad for surfing, gaming, consuming media, and are those likely to be clumsy enough or reckless enough to drop their iPad. There will be much more glare than the non-laminated screen but the screen will be much much cheaper to repair since the glass is not fused to the screen. If you break an iPad with a laminated screen, you will be spending much more to repair it. As far as the iPad 10th gen iPad supporting the 1st gen Apple Pencil, I totally get it. You don’t buy an iPad 10th gen unless you are on a budget whether it’s for use in a Kiosk, or restaurant as a menu or point of sale device, or in a school or factory and the 1st gen Apple Pencil is cheaper. In families the younger members probably inherit the 1st Gen Apple Pencils when older members upgrade to devices using 2nd generation Apple Pencils. There are probably already a ton of 1st generation Apple Pencils out there and offering a new iPad that continues to support it really just makes sense especially to attract people on a budget. As far as the dongle/cable situation is concerned. I personally very much prefer to have that scenario than to have the Apple Pencil sticking directly out of my iPad when I try to continue to use it while I wait for the Apple Pencil to charge because it feels more awkward to me than holding it with a cable sticking out of it as I already do when I use my iPad while my iPad itself is charging.
No matter how you pronounce potato doesn’t change the fact that it will be more expensive to repair a laminated screen and that alone may nudge those on a budget to choose the entry level iPad.
@@eyhtwozed2606 It's perhaps for those with a higher budget than most but it is still a budget iPad compared to getting an iPad Air or iPad Pro. Also, this is cheaper in some cases for those with a need for an iPad AND a "laptop". The question is what your budget is. There are also plenty of second hand iPads out there for those with a lower budget. The non-laminated screen is attractive for those who are at a higher risk of screen breakage (families with toddlers and young kids, restaurants, factories, etc.) And the cost to replacing a non-laminated iPad screen is much much cheaper than the cost to replace a laminated screen.
An unnecessary comparison between two different things with completely different price range and audience. I'm already spending a lot when I'm going to buy iPad 10h gen, I really don't see a real value in the end to spend that extra hundred and something euros when the performance/the screen/the size are the same or almost the same. Thanks for the time and the comparison. Appreciate it. Quality work 👌
I wanted a blue 256 GB iPad Air 5 cellular but the store only had that configuration in starlight. It's not important because it stays permanently in a case and the colour is mostly not seen. I bought a month before the iPad 10 was released. On that release date the price of the Air increased by A$110.
It’s wild to me that not a single reviewer understands that the reason this one supports the first gen pencil for schools who already have a bunch of pencils they don’t want to rebuy. Granted I think they should support both pencils but still.
The better keyboard and proper webcam placement makes iPad 10th Gen a better choice for me I think. I agree though they didn’t need a new iPad that fits between iPad and iPad Air….
I bought the air 5th Gen today… watching videos to learn about it until it comes in the mail! I picked the air solely bc of the Apple Pencil issue you spoke about. I didn’t want to mess around with a dongle etc.
I knew there was something strange. I’m new to Apples ecosystem. I was so confused when I was picking out an iPad, given the prices and sizes where very close to each other. So I picked the Air5 because know M1 is better. I’m glad I’m not the only one who is confused by all these models.
For the camera position; I do start with iPad 10. I am able to take meetings conveniently with my camera on. Can always manage the pencil until I can upgrade to a pro in about a year.
No one seems to be talking about the proper support for an external monitor that comes with all m1 iPads. That’s the largest reason for me to have bought the iPad Air 5
The external monitor full screen support for the M1 / M2 iPads is a pretty big deal. I think it will get more coverage once it is out for public beta and release at iPad OS 16.2. It currently is on 16.2.1 developer beta only, but it’s pretty good. It’s currently a bit buggy but will be a nice addition when using the iPad with a desktop setup and external monitor or when connected to a projector for presentations. Getting rid of the black bars is pretty significant. That feature (and the M1) along with a better 12M camera, faster USB-C, and 5G support make the 5th gen Air a better deal than the 4th gen, though the 4th gen is still a good device.
Great information - one suggestion to help the viewer! Please mark the devices - even though they are clearly color coded, it is hard to remember which is which when listening hard to your astute observations and comparisons.
You forget one big difference, and the one that matters the most to me. It's called....wait for it... Random Access Memory. iPad Air 5 has 8 GB, while I'm having a hard time finding out exactly what the new base iPad 10th.gen has, but it's not more than 4 GB. Maybe it's not upgraded at all, since they don't mention it anywhere...
@@MarkEllisReviews What about for things like light photo editing in Affinity Photo of Pixelmator Photo, or other apps like that- would there be any reason that the 4GB RAM wouldn't be good for quite some time, as long as this is really the most powerful thing that is being done on the device?
@@jm31828 every iPad in the current lineup would cope with that kind of light work, mate. RAM is a total non-event on the iPad for most people. For those to whom it matters, the iPad Pro exists.
@@MarkEllisReviews thanks for sharing, I’m so glad to hear it! I’ve really been struggling thinking I made a poor choice, only because of the a14 and the 4 gb ram- so I appreciate the reassurance that these specs are still quite good!
Would you rather choose new iPad or iPad Air 4th generation? mainly using for school, sometimes photo and video editing. I would love the new base iPad, but I´m a bit curious about still using the 1st gen Apple Pencil.
Just get the Air. Writing on the laminated display is better. On the non laminated it makes an annoying hollow sound. Charging the pen with an adaptor sucks balls If you ask me.
I’m super conflicted, because I want a new ipad (currently have the air 2 from 2016), and i want to use it for daily stuff (email, youtube, etc), but also for drawing with procreate. I have a 1st gen apple pencil, so i wouldn’t be able to use that with the air. Is it really that much of an issue to charge the pencil with a cable? Because how often do you really need to do that? Otherwise I’d need to spend €200 more on the air + invest in a 2nd gen apple pencil. Is that worth it? idk…
I’m sure you figured it out after the video, and it’s been pointed out by others, but the location of the camera precludes the MagSafe pencil connection, I would deal with the awkward camera placement to have use of the Pencil 2.
I have the iPad 9, and I’ve been wanting to upgrade for a couple years now. Issue is though I can’t seem to find one that I want. I like the mini but it’s just too small, the 10 is nice and was my overall pick but the Apple Pencil situation is just too inconvenient. The iPad Air 5 is what I would go with but it doesn’t have that landscape camera placement. So this is my dilemma 🙃.
I’m in the same position man except mines a 7th gen lmao, from everything I’ve read researched if you can get a 5th gen air on a good deal it seems to be perfect. If you’re desperate for that landscape camera the m2 air is just a minor spec bumped 5th gen!
The review I was looking for! I was going to buy the iPad Air but I had the suspect that it is the same of the normal version. I was right 😂 I’ll save some money for something more useful 😌
There is a technical reason why apple cannot put apple pencil 2 and that is landscape camera hardware takes up space where the charging dock for apple pencil 2 was supposed to be.
Hi Mark, I am wondering what you think about the Paperlike making the iPad's display look less brillant. I've never used a paperlike nor I think about doing so in the future, I was, just wondering how you think about that.
TouchID on the power button has always been a problem with me because the same button is used to turn the iPad off. So I always turn it off when I mean to turn it on because I push by habit. Laminated display, though? Worth the extra money, because I HATE the non-lam displays.
I got 10th gen 64GB for $449, then a week later I found ipad air 4 256GB for 499 brand new on walmart website. I’m a casual user so I don’t care so much about the M1 chip.
I just ordered the Air 5 because it will process audio and video editing faster in cafes. Also, less glare outdoors. Unfortunately I'm going to need to get some kind of USBC headphones and mics - bluetooth has lag and is useless when editing.
Apple is falling off. They stay “pushing” innovation, but they’re always taking 1 step forward and then two step back. It’s oblivious to use a first gen Apple Pencil AND a dongle on a 10 gen iPad! Like u said, it’s no reason why they couldn’t have created the 10th gen iPad to be compatible with the 2nd gen pencil. As long as we keep hyping them up, it will be no “innovation”. We need a real Wow moment! I’m sure all my techies can agree!
Thank you so much i was confused first because i didn't wanted to waste a lot of money but i wanted a good one, i prefer to watch movie on bigger screen and my phone don't help, watch youtube play games. But they do not have so many differences and i also was not even gonna buy an apple pencil, great. IM DEFINITELY GETTING THE IPAD 10 GEN
I'm looking for an iPad that will accompany me throughout my 7-8 year medical school journey. But I can't decide between the iPad generations 9, 10, Air 4, and Air 5. I'm concerned that if I go with older generations, they won't last long or will cause issues. 😕 I intend to use my iPad primarily for taking notes, reading PDFs, and watching lectures. I don't know much about technology, so if anyone could assist me, I would be grateful... 😇
I am far from being an expert but my 2-cents is that you should get the best one on your list, which is the Air 5. 7-8 years is a long time in the world of technology and you want your device to last a long time. Also if you're going to be using the Apple Pencil extensively, it seems like the laminated display (in the Air) would be a better experience (as well as compatibility with the Pencil 2). I know you must have a lot of expenses right now, but it seems to me that a few hundred dollars extra for an essential tool is worth it.
Audio production which is a big thing on the iPad the M1 is definitely faster on those things recording multitracked compositions with virtual instruments there is a massive user base for this so that's one group who want an air or pro with the M1 in it.
hey, I'm planning to buy iPad air 5 for my next 5 years of college. I'll just use it for note taking, reading, lectures and maybe streaming. Will 64GB suffice for next 5 years if I also use iCloud+? Or should I go for 256GB iPad 10gen, which is priced the same here.
Comparing TEXT reading - Ipad 10th more pleasent for my eyes causing less eye strain / same brightness , truetone off / compared ipad 10th, ipad 9th, ipad air 5 // BUT I choose air 5 (or pro) AND put on it - a Protection glass - protection glass light refraction also decreses eye strain at TEXT reading.... ( I do not know exactly why... l only experience it ... )
Don't forget the refurbished store. Currently, you can find a similarly specced iPad Air (4th Generation, not the new 5th) for £439.00, straight from Apple, which is just lower than the 10th Gen new iPad. Remember Apple essentially reused the older iPad Air design, chip, etc for the new iPad. Saving £60, you get the same A14 bionic chip, Slightly better display on the older Air, slightly worse selfie camera at 7MP instead of 12MP landscape on the new iPad 10, and Magic Keyboard support (In my opinion better than the Keyboard Folio, because of backlit keys, and pass through charging), and a big thing, Apple pencil 2nd Generation support, which is just straight up better. Maybe losing a few colour choices. The refurbished store is quite reliable, as the iPad you're getting would have a new chasis and new battery. Therfore it would be better to get and iPad 4th generation from the apple refurbished store.
When you say that 99% don’t need an M1 versus an A14, that is true, especially since the M1 has the same CPU/GPU cores as the A14. But it’s also true that 99% don’t need an Intel i9 versus an Intel i7, but yet the choice exists. It’s also reflected in the sales figures. While Apple doesn’t publish exact numbers, reading between the lines you’ll see that half of iPads sold are base iPads while the rest is divided up among the other iPads. Similarly most people will buy i5 or i7 machines versus i9’s. Why the Apple Pencil 1 still exists is for two reasons. One is that the camera blocks a charger, so the Pencil 2 won’t actually work, which means the Pros will need to revise the Pencil 2 when it moves the camera. The other is for upgraders who already have a Pencil 1, like schools. Schools already have a ton of them. Schools also prefer non-laminated screens because it’s cheaper to repair. Kids probably break screens a lot. The Air and the base do not have the same target market.
I agree with that. The problem is summed up in your last sentence, though. As noted in my video, the biggest issue with the 10th gen is that it _isn’t_ the base model. It occupies a needless spot in the lineup and the Pencil thing (I’m afraid the camera thing doesn’t wash with me - why prioritise that over proper pencil support??) remains an unforgivable, user hostile decision - particularly at £499.
@@MarkEllisReviews Schools will flock to the 10’th Gen iPad, but Apple left the 9th Gen iPad because they know that not everyone can afford the higher-priced one. Schools will buy it, but not everyone can afford another $120, especially in these bad economic times. It’s the same reason the M1 MacBook Air stays in the lineup. Apple has a history of raising prices on redesigns, leaving the older model in place, and then reducing the price back to where it was after they’d recouped their R&D expenses and dropping the old model after a year or two. It’s happened with the MBA at least three times in its history. It’s a trend with iPhones to leave prior models in place now. They didn’t do that with the MBP’s because they wanted to wash their hands of the terrible Intel models despite raising the prices, plus Pro models are dreadfully expensive anyway. What’s another $200 to a pro when you’re already paying $2500-6000? As for the Pencil, I think Apple’s redesigning the Pros next with a new Pencil 3, another reason why the base wasn’t moved to the 2 besides making it cheaper for those already owning a Pencil 1.
@@techinrl9869 any product which needs that much explaining is troublesome, I’m afraid. The fact remains that the PR generated by this utterly weird iPad release has been incredibly poor.
@@MarkEllisReviews That’s probably true. I compare it to the iPad 9’th Gen getting Center Stage before the iPad Air did. Sometimes Apple has distortions in its product lines because they decided to advance a feature (in this case, landscape camera), but it isn’t time to update the higher models yet. This is one of those distortions where the Pros weren’t due for an update since Apple never updates more than one model in a lineup at a time. The Pros will get the landscape camera and a fixed Pencil 3 and then the lineup will sort itself out after that, but in the meantime, you get a lot of these types of complaints. Moving the camera to landscape created problems that won’t be solved till the Pros do it. Part of the distortion may have something to do with the EU USB-C mandate, too, but Apple may have been looking at USB-C all along as part of the squared off design language, so we don’t know for sure.
Just scooped up a decent condition 4th gen Air for $275 USD. Feel like it’s hard to justify buying the 10th gen unless you get some sort of deal or really want that camera placement.
I think I might get the Air bc I’m a stickler for not carrying heavy things in my bag lol and I have the MacBook Air…and I’m not using it as my main source…did u get the pencil by chance?
@@nichole2116 No I did not get the pencil. My used iPad came with an off brand pencil but I never use it. I did, however, get both the apple folio case and the Magic Keyboard as well. It’s nice being able to transition from a laptop form factor to a tablet all on the same machine. I also have an M1 MacBook Air but I never find myself using it unless I need a desktop class application like excel or want true multitasking/secondary monitor support.
Hi Mark! firstly thank you for your well detailed explanation! I wonder between iPad with only Wi-Fi & one with cellular and Wi-Fi. Could you please share your thoughts on that?
I would go for the iPad Air because you can get it cheaper if you go for a refurbished one. If I was in the market for one I would go with the iPad Air as much as I think the 10th gen iPad is interesting it’s way too expensive for something that is suppose to be for people on a budget. I would rather get a refurbished iPad Air or iPad Pro for way less then pay the overexcessive cost for the 10th Generation iPad.
I just bought the iPad 10th generation iPad 256 GB upgrading from 64GB and really like it . I just didn’t want the new Air or the older generation . I just wish my second generation Apple Pencil is compatible. Doesn’t make sense as to why it’s not since the 10th generation iPad is a 2022 release .

Logitech combo touch
@@nickbodily8495i think the commented meant one where the keyboard is located on the side the usb-c port is, which the logitech combo touch isn't. i dont actually think such thing exists yet as there probably isn't much demand for it
Always love the even handed perspective, praise and criticism where applicable
Also, got a legit LOL when doing the comparison
You had me ROLLING with this review! “They both have cameras, that you probably don’t use anyway!” 😂😂😂😂😂😂 I like pink and I’m cheap! I’m going with the basics!
I ended up with the Air 5 and i got the Apple Pencil and Logictech keyboard portfolio (it has the function keys and great keyboard at half the price of the Magic Keyboard) for myself. I will end up getting the Gen 10 for my mom so she has a reliable device for when my sister want to FaceTime her (she like the camera position).
Recently, this is the most accurate and practical review ever on an ipad
I don’t know about the performance gap between these two during normal use,but I did notice a huge difference in performance when I was editing and rendering some videos…m1 is a beast compared with a14
Listening to him is like I’m hearing JARVIS
HAA! 😂
Finally someone said it! 😂
So basically I skipped on the 9th gen because of the screen size and the usb c.
same bruh i just upgraded to a 5th gen air from a 6th gen ipad
@@lebronjames5287I’ve been planning on doing that too I guess the air is just perfect for people that used 6 gen
Facts
i feel again that this may be an unpopular opinion - as a user of an ancient 2017 10.5in ipad pro + 1st gen apple pencil, the 10th gen looks pretty good except for the colours. i use my ipad primarily to watch movies, youtube videos, emails, some web surfing i.e. *exactly* what you said ipad users do, & have realised that i don’t exactly need a pro for all this. that sald, i’ve only ever used my ipad pro so there’s no comparison for me.
as for losing the pencil’s cap - it is magnetic & attaches itself to the side of the ipad. of course with disappearing bezels maybe it’s different now but that’s what i do.
i’ve also done minor editing work on M365 apps / acrobat & everything’s been great.
i was inspired by david hockney & had intended the ipad pro + pencil to do more digital art but it never went very far 😅
all this makes me wonder if the 10th gen is for those like me who jumped at getting the pro before realising that an « ordinary » version would do very well too.
Hi Mark: iPad 9th gen/256 gig and saved about $250 compared to 10th gen. And thank you again!
Enjoy!
This was so immensely helpful, Mark. THANK YOU!!!
I’d go for the iPad Air because it has a better keyboard (sits on your lap, backlit keyboard, and enables you to charge while using a USB C accessory), and better CPU (M1 Chip which means the device is future proofed for at least 5 years).
You are the most honest guy and the way you explain is the way everyone should do it
You are totally right. The reason I finally opted for this is the refresh rate, a compromise of internal storage (128gb) Face ID, quad speakers were most of the reasons why I decided on this,
Don’t underestimate the iPad mini 6. I much prefer to use it for media content than my 11inch M1 pro
…. Young children are why the 9 and 10 exist. They break stuff. 😉
Sounds like you bought that for your own backup device.
@@jmbosquesillo7203yep. I don’t know why am 8 year old would care about refresh rate and how loud it is. It doesn’t even know how to multiply 😅
I should’ve went with the air hahaha
we need much more of these critical videos/reviews. Apple needs to wake up and learn again to do it right for the customers.
It won't be my last ;)
I got the 10th Gen for my mother. She doesn’t need the pencil and isn’t a power user. Plus an appropriately placed camera
Nice
Well done!. The first time watching your videos and love it!. Keep the good tech work!
Thank you!
Great comparison Mark, and thank you for offering your honest perspective on what actually matters when buying an iPad.
If anybody is wondering what ipad to actually get and don’t wanna spend too much money and not waste money. Get the iPad Air 5th generation or the iPad mini 6th generation. Both are great options for a tablet that your using for creative purposes or even just gaming.
10 gen is good too
I feel like if you don’t care about the pencil than save the money and get the 10th gen and only if you really want the new design. I really feel like wanted to get this out at $399 and couldn’t so they kept the 9th gen in the line up. Long term I think the plan will be drop the 9th get this to $399, drop the 11in pro and maybe do a 14 or 15in pro. So the future line up will be Pro with M series, Air with M series -1 (gen behind the Pro), Mini with an A+ chip (chip that is in the iPhone Pro series that year) at $449, Base iPad with A chip (from the base iPhone) for $399
Nice one!
Nice review, crisp and sharp. Thanks
The 10 is good
Ipad Air 5 for me
Brilliand review, Mark! Thanks a lot! Best part is when you talk about the pensil! Enjoyed it! 😀
Haha - thanks!
Small gap, no gap, you say potato, I say potaaaato.
Mind the gap.
No matter how you pronounce potato doesn’t change the fact that it will be more expensive to repair a laminated screen and that alone may nudge those on a budget to choose the entry level iPad.
The 10th gen ipad isnt really a budget ipad considering the price.
Getting the 10 Gen iPad...Sorry Air. Not sorry! Great informative video. Great work putting it together. Lots of work I know. Cheers mate👍
Thank you!
Any school with a half decent eye on its budget will go for the 9th gen. This iPad isn’t for that market.
The better keyboard and proper webcam placement makes iPad 10th Gen a better choice for me I think. I agree though they didn’t need a new iPad that fits between iPad and iPad Air….
Yes
If no one’s talking about something… there’s usually a reason 😉
Should have thrown the iPad Air 4 into the mix as well.
Oh please don't complicate things further.
I don’t think the RAM matters for 99.9% of people who buy either of these iPads.
@@MarkEllisReviews When it's as low as 3 or 4 GB, then it matters. If it had 6 GB, then I would have said that it's fine.
I own the Air 4 used it for studying and it’s a badass device!

Went for the air black friday
I’m super conflicted, because I want a new ipad (currently have the air 2 from 2016), and i want to use it for daily stuff (email, youtube, etc), but also for drawing with procreate. I have a 1st gen apple pencil, so i wouldn’t be able to use that with the air. Is it really that much of an issue to charge the pencil with a cable? Because how often do you really need to do that? Otherwise I’d need to spend €200 more on the air + invest in a 2nd gen apple pencil. Is that worth it? idk…
In the UK, when Apple released the 10th Gen iPad, they increased the price of the 9th Gen from 316 UK Pound to 369 UK Pound
Yup and on Amazon u can get the air 5 for 569 and the 10th is 499

No problem!
Thank you, thank you I'm buying the Air 5 now.
Glad I could help!
I’m sure you figured it out after the video, and it’s been pointed out by others, but the location of the camera precludes the MagSafe pencil connection, I would deal with the awkward camera placement to have use of the Pencil 2.
Yup. No reason to prioritise that camera placement over the Apple Pencil choice.
Depends on how you use the thing.
If you don't ever use a pencil and do a lot of Zoom calls.....
A small advice mark. When you compare the 2 items keep it left & right through the end of the video without interchanging their sides.
I wish making these videos was that simple 😉

The iPad Air M1 currently £569 on Amazon at the moment. No brainer at this price which one to get.
Great price!
64GB though. Lousy.
Can you make a comparison with the samsung galaxy tab S8? love all your videos btw
Would you able to do iPad 10th Vs 9th generation that would be incredibly useful
I am after my 1st ipad and looking at the ipad 9 or 10 or an ipad air 5. Just for watching films and surfing and some drawing.
Hi Mark, I am wondering what you think about the Paperlike making the iPad's display look less brillant. I've never used a paperlike nor I think about doing so in the future, I was, just wondering how you think about that.
As mentioned in the video, it barely looks like it's there :)
TouchID on the power button has always been a problem with me because the same button is used to turn the iPad off.
So I always turn it off when I mean to turn it on because I push by habit.
Laminated display, though? Worth the extra money, because I HATE the non-lam displays.
Nice
I got 10th gen 64GB for $449, then a week later I found ipad air 4 256GB for 499 brand new on walmart website. I’m a casual user so I don’t care so much about the M1 chip.
If they’ve changed the charging port to usb c what do you do with all your lightning cables? Is there a way to convert them?
I’ll go for the air since they cost almost the same in my country. It’s a 50 euro difference
I intend to use my iPad primarily for taking notes, reading PDFs, and watching lectures.
The iPad is the one Apple product I can’t find a use for. I have a Mac mini that suits my needs and an iPhone but where would I fit in an iPad?
its a laptop replacement that is way more convinient on the go than acutual laptop
I started out playing Hearthstone on it and browsing the web when lying in bed. Finally discovered it’s an amazing device for studying.
Audio production which is a big thing on the iPad the M1 is definitely faster on those things recording multitracked compositions with virtual instruments there is a massive user base for this so that's one group who want an air or pro with the M1 in it.

No
hi, i have 1 question..
can ipad air m1 have ipad 10th smart folio?
i really like the blue one and i need it for my ipad air m1 blue
I just want an iPad for reading, browsing, Netflix, RUclips. Would the 10 gen be a good choice for what i intend to do with it thanks.

Thanks for this video
Thankx for this comment!
Thanks it was really a good review
You can buy a Logitech Folio detachable keyboard, with a back stand for the iPad Air (5th Gen) too :)
Another brilliantly fair review Mark... how the hell have you not got 6 figure subscribers?!?!
The reason they could not support pencil 2 is that the camera uses the place where the magnets and charging coil goes for the pencil
Yea same I’m thinking iPad Air 4th gen
actually the iPad Air 4 refurbished vs 10th gen is the closer comparison
Hi. How about for editing video? Do you think there is any significant diference for this usage?
Really appreciate your product reviews. Videos are brilliant. Definitely my favorite stop over to check out Apple products. Well done.
Awesome - thank you!
I heard that the M1 chip would keep the OS current for as long as you owned the tablet vs, the iPad 10
Non laminated screen is an instant no. Thats the beauty of an iPad over other options
In ‘real life’ it’s not actually a big deal. You really do need to go looking for it if you _really_ want to be cheesed off about it.
Hello! Thanks for your video, it has been really helpful. I am thinking now to buy a tablet to start editing videos. Which one would you recommend me to buy? Thanks anw for your time!
Just seen a report that the 10th gen USB port although a C connector is only capable of USB-2 transfer speed of 480mbps
Very poor.
Great review thanks
