I've been drawing more than 25 years and I started watching your vids thinking I wouldn't learn anything new. After 2 videos I've learned more than I have in 5 years (maybe longer). I always knew I skimmed over basics once I found a trick to hide my weak areas but no one ever put it so simply and compelling as you have.
For the first time maybe ever I'm going to be excited to draw basic shapes and not use my "tricks" of shading to fool the viewer, because deep down I've always known I was cheating them and myself.
You're a gifted instructor! This weekend I'm going to start drawing again for the first time in maybe 18 - 20 months, and I'm going to buy from you're curriculum! Thank you!

Learning basic anatomy is invaluable with this kind of stuff.
Also, I think what some people overlook (which you kind of eluded to) is that hands emote, so knowing the action driving the hand shape really gives it meaning and life.
I’ve seen a lot of technically good and accurate art that only transmits inanimate information like “person wearing stuff and standing in a place while holding a thing” but fails to transmit purpose, mood, or action, and that just results in stiff and lifeless humanoids.

Proko, I’m not sure if you went to school for this knowledge you have or if it’s purely experienced, but either way, I agree 100%. I’ve learned hands on (pun intended) that starting from a basic idea or form and adding to it is far easier than jumping in on something complicated and giving it your all. Great video!

Very helpful in many ways. Also I love your pinky gesture at 10:11, totaly reminds me of the Greek ideal and a pinky they would make. At 14:09 what you say about finding the corner is so great, it made me realize how important it is to communicate where the corners and ends are. This introduces the variable factor of camera lens distortion, which to me is very evident in some of the critiques you've so masterfully given. It's something everyone working from digital images ought to be aware of and account for. Camera images especially distort from about 24 inches from the lens. You're a great teacher.

    • @juanmccoy3066
      @juanmccoy3066 3 года назад +3

Focus on creating each individual shape rather than trying to make one big outline. Drawing is like cursive. Most people approach it like print or typing however.
Instead of drawing a "hand" seek out the shapes OF the hand. Dont start off with drawings of hands holding things like knives, swords, pens, etc. Start off with JUST drawing hands.
First make a rough outline with those basic shapes. Find out where the cubes go, the spheres, etc. Then connect it with those oddball curves that come in along the lines of the fingers. THEN make a more general outline around THAT and erase the guidelines you no longer need. Then you can fill in the details.
Too many people try to jump straight into the details from an outline that has no shapes, and thats what makes drawings look flat and cartoony.
This guy makes it look effortless. That is due to a lifetime of discipline and experience that has resulted in carpel tunnel. Ur not gonna be that fast.
It can easily take a student a whole week to draw a proper hand.
When u move the camera back and adjust proportions u can get into whole figures, faces, head angles etc and it wont take that long cuz ull have the fundamentals down..

the sample drawings sent in, i think, were too preoccupied with detail and not enough on more basic things like proportion - i teach my students to try to draw things like hands first totally without detail ... to draw them (and other things) as outlines first - it forces you to work on proportion etc

antigen4 This! I've discovered I focus way too much on detail. Plus I was never taught how to break things down into simplistic shapes. So it's definitely been a struggle.

These are some really great and useful tutorials. I like how you compare others work and show the corrections needed. That really helps us to understand the correct forms a lot better. Awesome videos.

Your videos have helped me tremendously.. over a short period of time I have gotten a better understanding of the construction. I can't thank you enough. 🙂 My style is more comic inspired at it's roots. Honestly, I just found your videos. Trying to get a better understanding of the anatomy because I most always lean towards the female form. I would love to let you see something I've done and see what you think because my art is good.. or I would like to think so?. Sorry, I'm rambling. I just have alot I've love to ask you.

Can i request that you show examples from Burne Hogarth? In my opinion he was the best anatomical artist of all time. His book Dynamic Anatomy is mind blowing and he has an entire chapter on hands.
