I started my career change as an artist by watching Proko's tutorial series, this was back in 2015. Now, it's 2022, I'm now a professional artist working on a video game studio and it's been a pleasant experience to revisit/relearn stuff from your channel. My humble beginnings started on this channel! Thanks so much for your hard work and dedication!
@@scoob2263I do apologize for the late response, as for my advice, especially when reaching your dreams, there will be always a way (nothing is impossible for a well-determined person) but do understand the process and importance of hard labour & setbacks that will surely come..you cannot always have a shortcut, but there is no magic at all..just keep embracing the pain and the process..keep learning, take baby steps, and be the best of yourself everyday by investing upon thyself. lastly, always value the importance of proper network. I believe it's just a charcoal pencil. People who draw with their shoulder and not just their wrist hold a pencil like that and that's why it works so well. Using your shoulder allows for a greater range of motion that your wrist alone can't achieve
1- Conte 1710 B 2- everyone? Lol 3- because you draw with your shoulder, it improves hand dexterity, and there is a greater range of motion than what you can achieve with just your wrist.
I wouldn't maybe focus so much on these "construction" methods/ temples/guides, especially if you're already having trouble with this stuff. To me they actually make thing's more complicated to draw (first I gotta draw a circle, then this shape, then that shape, then 2 discs and a grid thang etc, just wanna draw a head!!!). What I do is just draw the head from scratch (usually start with the cranium/dome, regardless of head angle). Sometimes it will look very wrong (especially if new to drawing without "construction") but when you've drawn heads this way for long enough, you can usually get the right shape (to my eyes) with only 1 or 2 attempts. I think you just need a good idea of what the shape of the head "should" look like, and Im guessing this just comes from pure practice.
I feel so grateful that my Dad let me borrow his copy of "Figure Drawing for All It's Worth" (1948)! Loomis, Rockwell and the giants at Marvel comics were all the rage for me! Thank you for this wonderful tutorial! You ROCK!

To me, the most difficult part of the Loomis method is figuring out where the cranium and oval is supposed to be. I feel like I mess everything up right after I draw the cranium.
It goes on the side of the head, from the top and bottom plane it's 1/3 down or up. If you don't know where it's at in perfect thirds. Divide that circle by half. Then from the middle divide that a half again and that will make a third

Very interesting using an Afro model. I did portrait painting in Africa for several years and instinctually struggled with the lengths and set of the jaws! My brain was used to European and it took a while to appreciate that most of the beautiful African I painted had a fundamentally different set and proportion! I’d like to mention my favorite model, a refugee from Zimbabwe called Lwazi who could sit motionless for hours with a perfect expression of peace radiating from her. When I asked her how she managed this she just replied in her equally beautiful voice “I pray…”
I just did the portrait course this year, brought my portraits to a whole nother level, Happy to see you revisiting it, as I was considering running through it again to strengthen the lessons. My then five year old son (2 weeks before he turned 6) drew together with me the side profile of a man's face, using the Loomis method. I was blown away as what he drew actually looked like a real person! The construction lines were far from perfect, circle was closer to an oval and some of the lines were less than confident, but the end result amazed me!
You absolutely need to know that you are a God of your field of interest, so simply explained, I've literally never been to such a great teacher on RUclips. 💜✨

Your ability to convey this method is simply amazing! Whenever I watch one of your videos I am instantly transfixed to every word that is spoken, and every mark you make on the paper! You have my utmost respect sir!
First of all, thank you a lot for this video! You are one of the best resources for learning I have ever found. From editing, to music and humor, everything is on point. I have a question in regards to one aspect of the loomis method: In your older video you draw the (as you put it) rythm of the cheek/jaw from the chin to the ear, in this new video you draw it from the chin to the top of the forehead. What is the benefit of doing it that way or is it more a head to head situation? If anybody else knows, feel free to answer as well! Again, thank you so much!
They’re just two different rhythms. The one from the forehead to chin attaches the side plane of the jaw perfectly to the side of the cranium. So it makes more sense as two forms that lock together. The one across the cheek defines the cheek bone which is an extension off the side plane.
this loomis method help me in portrait class so much my teacher said like a "what thing you ate at lunch?"😂😂😂 my work get better a lot after seeing your yt short and theses video about this method thank you so much ❤
this is so great- I am pretty much "self taught" as a pencil artist, and have mostly just drawn animals and people with no particular formulas or shapes as a reference, just looking at a photo and going for it, and they are pretty good. But I want to be REALLY good, so I felt I needed to sharpen drawing skills with another method, this is perfect- can't wait to check out the others and see where I get in a year :)))))) thanks so much!

It was hard for me too at first. But around 15-20 heads later I got the hang of it. And I'd advise revisiting the video every now and then to make sure you're doing it the right way.
Wow that line drawn at 5:30 just gave me the "ah ha!" moment big time. The cross in the circle tracks the eye/head pointing direction! I kept drawing that cross more-or-less vertical regardless of head orientation... which sounds awfully silly now. My heads are instantly 10x better, bravo.

Hey Proko, great video, what do you think about people who think Loomis is famous now only because his books were free in the early days of the internet? Im pretty sure appreciation from Loomis was there since forever, but there seems to be a bunch of scrubs these days claiming that Loomis is useless and his only redeeming qualities were being able to get the books for free. I know you have a classic training background at art school, so could you tell us what was the position regarding Loomis at Watts and how useful is for advanced artists compared to other methods? Sorry for the long question
I'm not proko, but I started to draw with Loomis, and I didn't know the books were free, sincerely Andrew is a master, and he showed us how he does things well. I think anyone who can't draw simple forms, has no power to critique serious artist like him, and the way he teachs makes me think its easier than I spected...
So how do you decide a circle in a circle?? I am a beginner. Second question can you please tell us more about outline structures of human faces. Your valuable comments would be highly appreciating. Thank you.
Two things that this video showed me: 1) That drawing different positions is no longer complete and utter rocket science 2) I cannot draw circles for shit
Me: Has difficulties with drawing human heads and getting proportions right for any headshape. Watches this video on how to draw heads using a simple and memorable method* Me: "Oh my god was it really that easy all along?!"

Nows a good time to see if you CAN draw now
Same here, though, it's an time period that only took place in my head canons
@Flandre Scarlet Practice makes better.
A true mood.

Not sure why I didn't watch this vid first. This is the only one that clicked for me personally THANK YOU.
Never in my life sketched a better circle that quickly. That step alone takes me more than 5 minutes
"Draw a circle"
"Okay, I give up"
This is so hard.
And try again u got this.
Nothing is hard.... Keep trying
Broo why comments are so fresh
@@OgMovieGamer😂😂😂😂
It was hard for me too at first. But around 15-20 heads later I got the hang of it. And I'd advise revisiting the video every now and then to make sure you're doing it the right way.
so Loomis heads are basically simple Iron Man helmets

Wow that line drawn at 5:30 just gave me the "ah ha!" moment big time. The cross in the circle tracks the eye/head pointing direction! I kept drawing that cross more-or-less vertical regardless of head orientation... which sounds awfully silly now. My heads are instantly 10x better, bravo.
Hi - I'm so delighted to discover you and your videos this morning! I am referring all my drawing students - I can demo in class, but this way they can review and replay what they need without having to try to see around my hand, other students, etc. Love your friendly, easy to watch approach. I'm a fan already ❣️
Your drawing instructions with the loomis method are so useful! Ypu explain it very clearly and it's fun to practice. Keep up with the good work! Many thanks.
P.s. and did I say it's very inspiring

Thank you.
Seeing your comment is 1y old, ig you figured it out, so how do you draw a circle inside a circle ?
Out of all the videos I’ve watched this week on heads, this is the one that really clicked! Great explaining and easy to understand. Ty

Thanks proko you really helped me!
Two things that this video showed me:
1) That drawing different positions is no longer complete and utter rocket science
2) I cannot draw circles for shit
