    I spend a week with the 2020 Honda Civic Type R and find that all the small changes made for 2020 add up to really significant improvements in the way it drives. Standard Honda Sensing for 2020 is also a nice addition, especially if you do long road trips. With an as-tested price of $37,950 it may not be the absolute best performance value, but its combination of practicality and amazing handling are still unmatched in this segment, and the Type R still has a special feeling to it that makes it a ton of fun to drive. What do you think of the 2020 Civic Type R? Thanks to Honda for providing this vehicle to review!

    That which is most overlooked about the CTR is its era.
    To those watching this video, this is the car and now is your time.

    I have disagree with the statement about the Type R not being worth the 8k difference from Veloster N. Especially if you’re going on the track. I think the aftermarket is a lot bigger for the Type R than the N and it has more potential but that’s just me

    I absolutely loved the first time I drove CTR on a perfect sunny Saturday. The second one was in winter in Canada - no snow on road but gravel/ rocks. I didn’t like it and found it underwhelming. It felt like a dialed up Fiesta ST. Not that you can’t drive it in rain/snow but it leaves out half of its performance. Honda has done magic with this car but anything less than perfect weather it’s asking for AWD.

I have an 10th gen Si and I love it but it's about the edge of how aggressive I want my car to look. I want the extra power and performance though. I'm a 40 y/o dad so yeah. With the lack of competitors to the FK8, I get why so many compare it with the N, but they really aren't comparable cars IMO beyond both having a highly-engaging (manual) experience and both being completely appropriate in stock form for amateur track usage. I own a N and I've driven the FK8 CTR on numerous occasions, although not the 2020. The pre-2020 FK8 is a step above the N across the board in terms of performance (and price), and the 2020 is taking that a step further. The N was not designed with the intent to compete with the CTR and establishes itself as an intermediate between Si and CTR skewing slightly in the direction of the CTR. I do agree that the sounds of the N are a lot of fun and add to the experience, whereas with the CTR something like the Remus exhaust is necessary to enable that level of audible fun (although obviously exhaust is hugely subjective.)

    It’s a very, very satisfying car to drive. I had big dilemma CTR or Bullitt some 2 years back. CTR is a better car: steering, cornering incl. rotation, gear ratios, brakes and everyday practicality. But for some unknown reason Bullitt delivers more trill and smile. Maybe V8 and RWD? What was your feeling @matt Moran motoring? Why better sports car is not always better drivers car? I would like to have those two instead of base 911.

    • @MrGreatnessisme
      @MrGreatnessisme 4 года назад

      I was thinking of eventually using my R as a winter beater and the Bullitt or a GT as a summer car. If I didn't have to haul a lot of stuff for work and if it didn't snow I would daily drive the GT/Bullitt. At that price point, nothing is more fun than the GT/Bullitt. The R is fun too but I never get to track it or go through some twisty roads so it seems a bit wasted.

      You can get that 'burble' tune with Hondata, however a lot of tuners recommend against it since it'll eventually cause engine issues. Thus why I steered far away from it when I got my R tuned.

    • @gravityhammer25
      @gravityhammer25 4 года назад

      @@MrGreatnessisme There is really no need for a tune if you want the occasional pop n crackle. I have a Milltek Non Resonated exhaust on my Type R and I get pops and crackles on stock tune.... Not as much as a burble tune but it's fun. The reason why is because Milltek is a true catback exhaust and replaces the front pipe.
      Some aftermarket exhausts are actually not replacing the front pipe so they are not true catbacks and don't actually open the exhaust up. Also other catbacks have resonators that kill the sound.

I think the styling designers are fully aware of this. This car is done up with "Manga" stylization. Which is an extremely popular and well developed art form used in JDM comics, advertising graphics and fashion. This car is very much the modern high art Manga look.

    Thanks for this! I was a breathe away from buying a 2020 CTR after driving the 2019. I ended up buying a 2016 Miata Sport RWD + ST + MT + red 45k miles for $10k OTD while keeping me 2010 Maxima. The CTR is a great all arounder but I couldn't get past the ricer boy wing/styling and the Miata cures all my desires for something fun to drive while the Maxi gives me practicality for grocery store/kid runs. Plus I didn't want to pay $40k for a depreciating asset (even if values are relatively holding ok so far).

    I’m looking for a new car and was looking considering between the Sti and the Type R. I have driven the Sti and I love how it feels when you drive the car and how raw it is when it comes to the mechanical feel of the driving experience. Hearing you say how the steering might be better than the Sti puts the Type R as the first option now as this was the main feel I was concern about but I think you have covered all the points I was looking for for me to go for a Type R hands down!!!!

    • @JEtienneMusic

      Literally am wrestling between those 2 cars as well. Mainly STI because I had an Evo X so I'm used to turbo charged 4 bangers with AWD. But something about the new Mustangs are slightly appealing as well and I would like to at least test drive an Ecoboost. But the main competition is STI and Type-R for me. I'd be curious to follow up with you next year and see which one you end up getting!

      Joseph Harrison i come from an STi, have a PP Mustang 5.0 now (modified both). the ecoboost is trash, dont waste your time. compared to the STi, the 5.0 feels terrific driving slow, but is much sloppier/larger feeling driving at the limit. i'd imagine the type r is much more composed than both, similar feeling to the evo but significantly lighter. i plan on trading the 5.0 PP for one once my money situation is right. hope this helps 👍

      The civic will hold his value,cheaper service than subaru,cheaper parts,much better on MPG (34mpg if u can behave)

    Apart from the sound (which is subjective), the Type R beats the Veloster in every category.

      I had an STi (head gasket blew up) and then a base WRX after that through 2008 to 2019, before moving on to the Type R. If you are in a reasonable position to do it, go get a Type R. You will love it, and I promise you won't miss having AWD unless you live somewhere where it snows all winter. The Type R is easier to live with (quieter, better cabin, etc.) and also more much rewarding to drive. Everything related to driver involvement (steering feel, braking, shifting, throttle response, instrumentation, the seats...) is a notch up from a WRX family car. One caveat on the Type R. I splurged and put 18 inch forged wheels on my car after burning through the first set of tires after 9000 miles. The stock wheels are heavy and there are precious few (and expensive!) tire options go with them. The 18 wheels mellowed out the ride, with noticeably better acceleration off the line, but also introduced a little bit of torque steer (definitely a worthwhile trade-off overall). That said, it seems that a brand new WRX is coming, so maybe you wait and see what Subaru (finally) brings to the table and then decide!

      Yes must be appealing to scuby owners for stand out design and great driving as well as practicality . Something different from German designs but feel they have reached a peak here of engineering apart from going silly power and a few tweeks like cooling for track days. Only thing missing is AWD which could be handy in draggies and winter weather

    • @typerfk8
      @typerfk8 3 года назад +1

      I would say it probably would come down to drivers and weather conditions, I never drove an S209, but I did daily an STI for a while... STI has massive amounts of grip, but does feel heavier than the Type R. I would think the S209 upgrades made the car even tighter with even more grip.... which is insane to think about. I think handling wise the S209 is probably very good but I think the Type R may be able to pull away from an S209 in a roll race. Even with 341hp that EJ257 just is not great on the highway unless it is tuned. The K20C1 engine in the Type R is more responsive and has less lag. I do like the S209 though... if Subaru didn't make them so expensive... I do say in the rain an S209 would definetely be better, in the dry the Type R Should be able to keep up or beat it even.
