Very well done! One of the best reviews of the 2020 Type R I have seen. I am in my mid forties and have a family. For my wife and I the short list for a second car included the 2019 Veloster N and the 2019 Type R. We ultimately went with the Type R and we are so happy we did. People who swear by 4wd or rwd just have to drive the Type R to understand what an amazing performer this is. Reliability is a big deal for us because we plan on keeping this car for a while so the fact it did not have a heavy, more complicated 4wd system was a great plus for us. We also LOVE that rear wing and reminds us every time we look at it that we did not pay for a "regular" Civic and the fact that the rear end is so planted at high speeds despite not having the added weight of a rear differential is 100% due to that wing PLUS it is not in the way when looking out the rear window. Again, well done and I hope more people can enjoy the pure driving magic that is the Honda Civic Type R.
It hadn't occurred to me that the wing's down-force was compensating for the front-heavy weight distribution, but that makes a ton of sense. Simply brilliant engineering.

Alex, I hope this encourages people to learn to drive #manuals. The people in Swindon, Wiltshire, England who made this Type R will soon be out of a job so I would like to take this opportunity to wish them well in their post- Honda careers.
If the veloster N was available when I bought my Type R, it would have been a much more difficult choice. The Golf R and WRX were never going to make it for me because they have AWD and were less efficient. I daily my CTR.
@@bennyang8049 I've never had the grind issue at all. But I've been only driving manual transmissions for 15 years now. My guess is it's partially user error.
Same. I feel like the Type R is objectively the better performance car, but the Veloster might have the edge as a daily driver. Biggest complaints in owning mine for 2 years are interior rattles, a bipolar transmission at times, non customizable drive mode settings and the lack of lumbar support for my rapidly aging back. Of course, when you drive it spiritedly, you can forgive it's flaws for the most part.
Actually, mechanics say Honda quality has fallen significantly. Not to mention their reliability is out of the top 10. I used to be a Honda and Acura only type owner, though that changed and I would never buy a Honda.

Hey Alex. There is no rear parking sensors in the type r because you mentioned that in the beginning where you listed the safety systems Also you put the wrong cargo area and bag score. 19cu ft and 4 bags
I am shopping, and this is at the top of my list......if this came with Honda's SH-AWD, I would not even be having a debate between this and the Golf-R. The styling (especially the plastic tack-ons in the rear) is a tough pill to swallow, but I will have to get used to blindfolding myself, everytime I need to get something from the rear of the car.
it starts off more than the lowest trim Stinger, and comes within spitting distance of the 3.3 V6. Unless you really want a hatch for the looks, i think the stinger's going to have a much more "luxurious" feel.
The Civic Type R is an excellent piece of engineering for front drive. The extra wings and vents are a bit too much for me as I prefer the look of the Golf R. And I appreciate you putting the Kia Soul in for size comparison as I don't see it as an SUV/crossover as many reviewers see it.
So I've learned since watching this video that Honda is going to release the Limited Edition (600 in the USA in the Phoenix Yellow color). It seems that it is a more stripped down and lighter Type R that is geared more for track enthusiasts. They are also releasing a Type R Sport which won't have the huge rear wing and will have 19" tires. Also more interior sound deadening and black seats instead of red ones. I love the way this "Sport" version looks - I'd buy it over the regular Type R, But - Honda won't be selling it in the USA
Alex I too prefer AWD over FWD. If the Golf R were the same size in the rear it would be a no brainer for me. Since the track isn’t my primary focus the refinement and features of the Golf R win out for me. The rear is just so small. I want the see the rear of the Type R up close.
Great review of an awesome car. The minor changes reduce the fake vent issues a bit. Really think the Veloster N with performance pack is a serious cross shop option here. What is difficult to understand is how Hyundai got their exhaust sounding so good, but Honda has really struggled.
Dumping fuel into the exhaust on purpose to make it go pop and bang, is not really acceptable to Honda, lol. Same for the exhaust noise level -- if the stock exhaust flows enough (which it does), that is the priority over making it loud unnecessarily for mere entertainment purposes. :) Same reason why it has rev hang too, instead of snapping the physical throttle shut when you get off the throttle pedal like some European brands that emulate old-fashioned cable throttle behaviour... Honda are making sure that excess fuel is burnt inside the engine to reduce emissions, instead of going bang in the hot exhaust.
erlebo this is the normal complaint by all civic type r owners. It is not rev hang. It has something to do with the clutch master cylinder. There are videos from owners buying a modified clutch master cylinder and it eliminated it.
@@bennyang8049 You're right, I've seen that too. I can't imagine paying $40k for a car to grind gears like that. Then have to do mods just to have a normal shifting gear box. That rev hang is ridiculous.
Honestly, in profile, the wing isn't that bad. It's only when you're looking at it from the rear 3/4 or directly behind that it looks crazy racer ricer nonsense.
OK, OK. It's an awesome vehicle. I get it. I suppose I could buy a Hot Wheels version to sit on my desk until I could become resigned to the styling. But it would take a while. I have to admit, though, that in the matte gray it looks less offensive and boy racer than in other colors. Or perhaps I'm already becoming resigned. I've owned a couple of Hondas over the years including a much loved 1994 Prelude with a VTEC engine that gave me wonderful service and total reliability over a 150K miles. All I ever did was put in fuel, change fluids, and replace tires. It ran exactly as well when I replaced it as when I bought it. In my experience Honda builds great cars, motorcycles, and lawn mowers. I trust the brand. But as far as the Type R vs the Golf R is concerned I'd probably opt for the VW for several reasons, some very personal. I own a GTI and even with an APR Stage I tune that adds about 75 HP and torque it drives beautifully and rapidly and the torque steer is relatively well controlled. I love the size of the Golf, almost a foot shorter than the Type R, that earns me a discount on Washington State ferries for which the Type R isn't eligible. (As I said it's a personal reason others don't share.) And despite the shorter length of the Golf, it has more overall (and more flexible) cargo space than the Type R. The Golf's seating, visibility, and versatility are all major benefits as far as I'm concerned. And in the messy winter weather we experience in the Pacific Northwest, the Golf R's AWD is a major plus. Finally, and this is the most personal of my priorities, the fact that the Type R lacks rear seat HVAC vents is a near deal breaker for me. Or more accurately for my large dog whose second home is the back seat of my VW. I"m willing to concede that the Type R is a rare and awesome vehicle undoubtedly destined to be a classic. But the Golf R has already earned that status. Either is a fine choice.
I just saw a review from a person who bought a Black 2020 a few days ago and he pointed out something I never noticed before; the length of the odometer reset stick which sorely pokes out from the front instrument cluster. Has anyone else ever noticed this before, especially from the current Type R owners?
If you drive this car in snow I mean...why? You definetly can. This is not the thing of a TypeR. Do mustang owner drive their car in snow? No ( if yes..then alright but dumb people exist). But people dont talk about that. If people thalk the hell out of FWD it's because they just don't know how to act in a FWD ( I mean if your thing is drag racing then no a FWD is not the greatest thing and as a drive but you should know that). In a positive way I wish you a great day Richard and just like that, roads in Quebec are just not for car not even an AWD. Roads here in Quebec are for monster truck !
15:55 keep your hands clean and you will never have a problem, eat food in your car then touch the wheel without washing them and it wont last more than a few years.
All Honda six speeds have a lock out that prevents you from shifting from any forward gear into reverse while moving. You would have to remove it or break a shift fork to misshift.
FWD + LSD might be great on a nice dry day, but I live somewhere that gets plenty of rain. Flooring it while pulling out of a side street into flowing traffic on a wet road is not a problem in my Subaru Legacy GT. I can't say the same thing about my wife's Golf GTi.
@@ALMX5DP Wow, so now you even claim to know what my judgement is like. I know exactly how good my judgement is at determining whether or not I should pull into a gap. All I was saying is that having 4wd allows you to accelerate faster than fwd on a wet road. You don't need a degree in physics to realize that! Therefore you can "safely" pull out into a gap that wouldn't necessarily be considered safe in a fwd car. Now if you think that having power and 4wd traction shouldn't be taken advantage of, even when there are no risks involved, then stick with your Corolla.
LMAO!!! Did you guys see ALEX Point out that now we have Grills to amplify the horn sound. Make the Horn loader? HEY, I DIDN;T SEE a rear center arm rest.
@@aliendroneservices6621 Friend, all I care is speed, power, RWD welcome. I don't need passengers. And least of my worries if fuel economy. We have 3000 tanks, million of trucks, jet fighters... and all of these are not very efficient. Why would I care? But Mustang will shred 5.2 sec this car does
Alien Drone Services as a former owner of an Evo X I can assure you high boost and general 4cyl turbos are really not fuel efficient. When you aren’t in boost the smaller displacement is obviously beneficial, but you’re almost always in boost
The typical worthless debates between theodorekell and Alien Drones Service... who cares? You clearly have different priorities in mind. There is no right or wrong in this when you come from completely different angles.
U said the suspension eliminates torque steer but what about wheel hop? My GTI has nominal torque steer but SIGNIFICANT wheel hop under 75-100% loads. Is this present in the Type R?
The seats are cloth and heating is not needed. If heated seats are a make or break item for you then this isn't a car for you. Its a performance car, not a luxury car.
Especially on the boost blue. Every boost blue I've found is at least $42,000 some dealers are charging $48,000 which is insane! Some buyers have been able to get them at MSRP. U just gotta get lucky. If I can't get a boost blue I'm going with red!
Honda is getting my attention. Although I will always wishing for a BNW, but I am no royalty or with surname like Rothschild, DuPont, or Rockefeller. Honda makes average mans sports car. The current Civic Coupe is a fine looking car at any price.
Honda USA left money on the table by Not offering the Sport Line. Older Adults have money and are more financially stable. These older adults would have bought one Sport Line. Also, the dealership markups are hurting sales figures.
I wouldn’t say 300hp is even close to being insane in a fwd. only starts getting scary at 600hp plus in a civic eg bubble hatch that weighs under 2k pounds😂
Base models? No. But some other trim levels of those cars will out drag race the type R. But to match the track performance you have to get some of the top trims.
If Honda set a 4wd system in this one, its weight should move around the range of weight of VW Golf R and WRX. So I wonder, how well the Type R will compete with them.
CTR takes down both those cars regularly on autocross courses. So it seems to do just fine on tighter types of environments, without the need for extra mass of an all wheel drive system.
@@ALMX5DP I used to have a 17 STI and my Type R is better at everything except launching and unbreakable traction on imperfect surfaces. The Type R understeers less than my STI did, feels more agile and definitely faster from a roll. Type R is also more stable at high speeds than my STI was. I just have to be mindful when the road has spots off gravel or dirt from rain storms but other than that the Type R is just better. With its lower weight I can just make the Type R dance on a backroad in a way that my STI could not.
@@mhicks31 I don't care about any racing. I only like to hit the curves and lights/stops on our local roads. My friend has Mustang v8 MT, which I drove few times. This is so much fun. theodorekell You either get it or you don’t. Each there own and that’s what makes options great! That mustang is not built the same and won’t be worth near what the type R will be in 5 years. If you plan on autocrossing or doing casual track days the type r will eat it for lunch. If you want to race people at street lights then the mustang is the car for you.
I agree, if it was an automatic i would consider it, i"m not about to drive manual every day for the next 5-10 years just cause im getting a semi performance car. Plus a DCT would get better mileage and acceleration than manual... dont know what they were thinking... probably saving it for the next gen
@@lmaostefan Yup, agree with all those points. Plus I already find rowing your own gears using manual mode on an automatic transmission is already enough fun. Anyways, next gen Civic is coming soon and then probably a new type r in 2 or 3 years after that.
This CTR routinely takes down Focus RS's on autocross courses across the country. Doesnt seem like it needs extra mass to power the rear wheels when it does as well as it does.

Amazing grip, like a wild mouse at the amusement park. Drove a new STI right after, and was not as impressed even though it has a nicer interior, and the wing-delete looks amazing.
Alex, I hope this encourages people to learn to drive #manuals. The people in Swindon, Wiltshire, England who made this Type R will soon be out of a job so I would like to take this opportunity to wish them well in their post- Honda careers.
This is thing is also made in UK... I am out
If the veloster N was available when I bought my Type R, it would have been a much more difficult choice. The Golf R and WRX were never going to make it for me because they have AWD and were less efficient. I daily my CTR.
Michael Steele hi. Do you experience the 2nd gear grind or the 4th gear lockout 2017 2018 and 2019 owners complain about?
@@bennyang8049 no. Never had those issues. 23k miles and not one problem.
@@bennyang8049 Did you hear Alex grind the 1-2 shift @ 19:25? LOL, they still do it.
Questionable styling, but great engineering. This actually applies to much of the current Honda lineup.
I actually really like how the car looks
Actually, mechanics say Honda quality has fallen significantly. Not to mention their reliability is out of the top 10. I used to be a Honda and Acura only type owner, though that changed and I would never buy a Honda.

I am 43 and bought a 2018 ctr last year. I love it. I have had Civic Si, acura rsx type s , lots of Honda Performance cars. By the time the R was offered i was 40 but it was kind of a bucket list sort of thing to own one. Year and a half later however i am getting a little tired of kids taunting me to race and even guys my age in mini vans lining up next to me lol. Its getting old fast, as am i. Hey Alex. There is no rear parking sensors in the type r because you mentioned that in the beginning where you listed the safety systems
Also you put the wrong cargo area and bag score.
Stinger actually does not feel luxo. Plus everybody talking about gremlins....rattles Kia comes with
The Civic Type R is an excellent piece of engineering for front drive. The extra wings and vents are a bit too much for me as I prefer the look of the Golf R.
And I appreciate you putting the Kia Soul in for size comparison as I don't see it as an SUV/crossover as many reviewers see it.
During CV19 I was able to pickup a '16 ND1 Sport Miata w/45k miles for $10k OTD.
Can you turn off the exhaust sound that comes from the speakers?
I like this guys review, to the point, VERY DETAILED, and all of the above. Awesome review. I really like the Type R now.
Awesome review!! One of the most detailed and showed me the most about the car. Thanks for the video!!!
I was waiting impatiently for your review on this vehicle! you are awesome. Thank you!
"impatiently"
haha, you're so honest!
I'm not sure if this video is not edited properly, but I feel like Alex is repeating himself a lot - especially at 7:00, 7:40
There is a little blip, but some of it was "intended" but could have been reduced,
Also I noticed the tachometer doesn't seem right throughout gear changes at 17:33.
19:27 . Was that gear grinding?
yes
Ha! I caught that as well.
@@TassieLorenzo NICELY PUT BROTHER. THATS WHY I KEPT MY TYPE R STOCK EXHAUST. I AINT IMPRESSED WITH LOUDER ONES

I wonder if he even noticed that grind. Or perhaps he just didn’t feel inclined to make note of it in the video
I'd say it all has to do with that stupid rev hang.
erlebo this is the normal complaint by all civic type r owners.

GM Hyperstrut helps with torque steer is standard on Buick Envision. Why no Civic based dual axis strut on the Acura RDX?
Very informative video. Thank you so much.
Great review as always. 👍
How would you compare the ride comfort of the type R to the golf R?
Can't wait to see what they do with the new Civic.
In Australia Honda sensing was standard on release
I wonder how much of a difference some dynamat in the doors and under the carpet would help with road nose?
The type r can get 34mpg on highway if you baby it using mobile 1 full synthetic
I just saw a review from a person who bought a Black 2020 a few days ago and he pointed out something I never noticed before; the length of the odometer reset stick which sorely pokes out from the front instrument cluster. Has anyone else ever noticed this before, especially from the current Type R owners?
The reset stick is not a big deal because the steering wheel blocks it from your driving view plus your eyes are on the road.
I must be feeling younger because I’m starting to be able to imagine myself in one, but then I remind myself I’m almost 50.

Here in Quebec, with snow from November through April, AWD really is a plus, but i'm torn!
Tire choice plays a bigger role when comparing FWD and AWD in snow. A FWD car with proper snow tires will perform better than AWD without.
Ca pourrait être pire si ce n'était qu'une propulsion
If you drive this car in snow I mean...why? You definetly can. This is not the thing of a TypeR. Do mustang owner drive their car in snow? No ( if yes..then alright but dumb people exist). But people dont talk about that. If people thalk the hell out of FWD it's because they just don't know how to act in a FWD ( I mean if your thing is drag racing then no a FWD is not the greatest thing and as a drive but you should know that). In a positive way I wish you a great day Richard and just like that, roads in Quebec are just not for car not even an AWD. Roads here in Quebec are for monster truck !

Great video, very informative.
Is there a lockout feature to prevent drivers from accidentally shifting into reverse when they meant to shift into sixth gear?
Yes.
you gonna push it in, i believe
All Honda six speeds have a lock out that prevents you from shifting from any forward gear into reverse while moving. You would have to remove it or break a shift fork to misshift.
FWD + LSD might be great on a nice dry day, but I live somewhere that gets plenty of rain. Flooring it while pulling out of a side street into flowing traffic on a wet road is not a problem in my Subaru Legacy GT. I can't say the same thing about my wife's Golf GTi.
Why are you pulling out into traffic in such a manner? FWD has it's advantages and disadvantages, but one of those is not fixing bad driving habits.
@@ALMX5DPBased on your logic, a Type R shouldn't be taken around a corner any faster than a Corolla!
Angfam all I said was you have bad judgment when driving. No logic necessary to convey that.
