    Leave it to Mr. Dykes to review the Type-R with civility & humility. "Leaving the track day diaries to other channels" and the racing to "more qualified people." And only Alex's "First Drive Reviews" are more thorough than other reviewers.

  • @GeorgeKnighton

    I understand the anti-spoiler comments completely. But this is a Devil Be Damned automotive choice...the wing is functional, and even those tiny little shark fins over the rear hatch serve a purpose. As a 62 year old driver, however, I definitely understand the anti-spoiler comments. :-)
    Alex refrained from the almost obligatory 0-60 run with the driver's hands off the steering wheel, and correctly pointed out that you can still get some torque steer feel if you're accelerating out of a corner. I'm glad he spent some time explaining the difference in the front suspension and how this affects torque steer, because this is one of the more expensive design changes for the CTR, and Honda are rightly proud of the design.
    All in all, I think he did a good job with this. He's clearly not your typical Honda "fan" of this type of vehicle, but he was fair and dispassionate, and explained the faults and foibles as well as the assets.

    • @GeorgeKnighton
      @GeorgeKnighton 7 лет назад +1

      ha ha ha ha.... :-) I'm surrendering that point. The reason black is proving to be the most in-demand CTR is because that color effectively disguises all of the silly black plastic inserts.

    The haters are going to hate. I got to spend some time behind the wheel and found it a blast to drive, comfortable, tons or rear seat leg room and a huge space to put stuff under the hatch. The visbility out the rear is no problem even with the big wing. I'm an old geezer and would glady have a type r. It hauls ass too.

    Excellent review! I am re-discovering these Type R videos because I was fortunate enough to buy a Type R and this review has been spot on and informative. I LOVE the looks of this car. It does make you feel special from the inside to the outside and that is an incredible thing to say especially at this price point. That rear spoiler really helps make the Type R a Type R to me. What people don't say is how well you can actually see out the back window. Not only is that beautiful wing functional, but it designed to not obstruct your rear visibility. This car is AMAZING!.

    I love the crazy styling, it's possibly the most beautiful production car ever made. From the negative comments, I'd say it's definitely not for conformists, introverts, self conscious types, or just folks who feel old at heart. Maybe I've played Mario Kart WAY too much, or maybe I just don't have the "grow up and be sensible" gene. This was a fine review video, thanks.

    Awesome review. This is pretty much everything I am looking for in a car (manual, hatchback, reliable, relatively quick, fun to drive, around $35k (if I wait longer or search hard enough). The only downsides IMHO is the boy racer appearance and the wheel/tire setup (great for track/bad for pothole infested roads). I would also be hesitant to only have a flat repair kit as opposed to a spare tire.

    Rear wing is over the top for me but there's no mistaking it for what it is. BIG fan of Honda products for over 50 years, they have proven themselves to me many times over. The Type R looks like a blast to drive and like all Hondas should prove to be nailed together quite well. Great video Alex!

    • @aoescool
      @aoescool 7 лет назад

      Nissan TitanWarrior well from what it looks like Honda decided to lower the hp to 250..but the torque is up to 280 and its going to be lighter than the camry.. so expect a very zippy car.. personally I like the v6 and the coupe which Honda decided to kill for this year.. but at least all cars will have a manual transmission

    • @InvestBetter.

    • @rusack7174
      @rusack7174 7 лет назад

      Neither the Camry or Accord are considered "performance" cars. If you look around you about town and take an accounting of the kinds of people who choose these cars, racing around is probably the farthest thing from their minds. By virtue of the turbo in the Accord however, it may be able to provide more grunt where drivers of these cars usually drive them.

    From what i know the Type R has Honda sensing in Europe, comes with parking sensors in the GT version and the engine has 320HP tuned for 98RON fuel. Also i want to add that USA has very cheap cars, the same Type R in my country is arround $46000 while a new WRX STI costs $64000.

    Hi, I just mentioned this on another video. Here in the UK we have all the radar and related safety systems. E.g. Collision prevention with auto-braking, lane following, cruise control with distance control, sign reading, etc. The sensors are in two places: In the housing of the rear view mirror and in the bumper's open grid bit below the headlights.

  • @djoetma

    The reason it doesn't have 4WD is simply because this is a FWD car and that's what they aimed the development on. Many cars hat are AWD could be 2WD, but aren't. So the arguments Alex is posing are simply incorrect. Honda didn't want it to be a rally-canon-for-the-road or anything. It's a racer not a crosser. Something like that. Honda does F1 and WTCC, not WRC.
    It's also supposed to be a proof of what a FWD can be as a sporty car, and currently it's the fastest FWD on the Nürburgring.
    Well, market wise, is this a smart choice? One could argue that in this class people are looking for a rally-oriented car and thus would go for the Focus RS (even though that's way more expensive) or WRX STi (not sure about the prices in the US, but here it's waaaay more expensive because of taxes). But looking at the many Type-R fans out there (and I assume Honda did some market research), I guess there's still some animo for it.

    Nice overall review. My question is when you did 0-60 and 60-0 tests, what mode were you in? They should give you different results when in comfort vs R. Also did this wing shake and move a lot when you shut the hatchback? I thought you could hear it but you edited out the video portion of the hatchback shutting. I'm hoping Doug's review was a mfg defect and they don't all shake like that when you shut the hatch's. Thank you.

    I personally love the Type R. One can argue it looks ricey, but you won't call a Porsche 911 GT3 RS which also has giant wing, diffusers and splitter and both of them are functional aerodynamics.
    My only reservation is Honda dealers in North America bending over every buyer asking for a Type R. Hopefully with a longer production run in 2018 this won't be an issue starting next year.

  • @BazonBlades

    The Civic R Type is a car for those that do not have experience with or know what an actual sports car is. Just the fact that this car is FWD makes it totally undesirable to real "sports car" enthusiasts.
    Beyond that, it actually looks like a decent car. Well appointed to appeal to it's real user base, which is mostly young, inexperienced sporty car enthusiasts. It would probably make a decent first sporty car for a responsible young person.

    • @calumkylee
      @calumkylee 7 лет назад

      really? 7:43.8 on the 'ring and it's just a 'decent first sporty car' for those that 'do not have experience with or know what an actual sports car is'. this thing is the fastest FWD car in the world, as much fun on a track as anything AWD (notice i left out RWD).

    Can you comment on the ride quality of the Type R in comparison to the Focus RS.
    I had an RS for 8 months and had to sell because I couldn't handle the horrible ride quality of the RS even in normal mode.

    As a 60+ grandfather who has driven Honda's for the last 30 years, I'm almost tempted to buy this car for my son so he can stop driving his Honda Fit. He had so much fun in his Integra Type R until it was stolen. Not that's there's anything wrong with a Fit, it's a Swiss army knife type of vehicle. But I'm afraid of my grandsons getting in over their heads. The older one doesn't care about cars, but the younger one does. I drove a Corvette under a guard rail way back in the day and lived to tell the tale, not sorry, but don't want to be the "enabler."

    It's a little over the top but I'm a lot more forgiving to flamboyant aggressive styling if it's functional. An option to have a clean factory removal of the wing and other pointy bits would solve most of people's hang ups. But Honda won't do that. Honda isn't a big fan of options.

    If you want a DIY Si Hatchback just swap in the Si's transmission to get the LSD and get a tune. Since they have the same engine in different states of tune, the trans would give you the good power on handling and the tune could actually even make it faster than a stock Si. The only reason I say so, is they decided not to make the Si in hatch form, and they use the same general engines, I believe the only differences are the states of tune since they both make the same torque but one makes more HP. I'm assuming with the trans from the Si it would handle much like it on power and you could always go for coilovers too to get a firmer more sport feeling ride, it may not actually handle better with coils, I don't know how soft the stock suspension is. But with a tune I'm sure you could get somewhere around like 230hp and 200 ft lbs of torque with the stock engine just using more boost and slightly more fuel.

    Love this car. Very upset to hear about owners having transmission. Problems. I hope honda works this out. I would love to see a toned down version with 18 rims. Maybe even a bare bones entry model

    I love the fact that the Type-R is a hatch, but yes, would love to tone down the looks of the rear in particular. Get rid of the big wing and the non-functional black tack-ons in the back.

      Come to the UK. Our police are genuinely rock solid, and the country is so small you don't really get "small town" stuff happening. Well we do, but it's on a different scale.

    Honda skimped out on 4WD to lessen reliability issues, yet WRXs and STIs have always been 4WD and incredibly reliable. I think Honda just skimped out on 4WD to decrease costs for them and offer less value to consumer.

      Agreed. A compact version of the torque vectoring SH-AWD of Acura would have taken the Type-R to the next level. Honda skipped the AWD for cost reasons. A detailed mechanical review in a different site showed that there is built-in space under the Type-R to fit in an AWD system (aka Type-R is "AWD ready").

    I love this thing. I'm not currently in the market for this type of car at the moment, but wouldn't mind owning one in the future. If this does fail, Honda must know that it will be, in part, due to the DEALER markups. Hope they know that.

      Yeah Honda made way too many 2019 Type R's. Now that all the fanboys have one (and quite a lot on the used market too), there aren't many people willing to spend $36K USD on a Civic.

    I was only able to sit in a pre production Type R that was being readied for a dealer track day at Homestead Speedway... Those seats are incredibly comfortable and I'm a fat old guy! Except for the very weird looking rear end, it is an attractive little sports car, esp in white.. The rear wing is a deal breaker for me, however.

    I'd take the Ford Focus RS over the other performance hatchbacks because I find it the most attractive of all the hatches(up front at least) and for being AWD and having 350 horsepower.

    without the wing the type r would look pretty much exactly like the civic hatch. i like the differentation, but understand the stealth appeal of one without a huge wing. imo, honda got the aesthetics right with the civics (it's all subjective anyway). the one glaring ugliness though is the faux vents on the front and back. i was hoping the type r would make them functional but, alas, no.

    This car is awesome, though i think they should do a few things to make it more palatable to people like me. I would use this car every day, so i would say if this car lost the wing, went down to 18 inch rims, and increased the fuel capacity, this would be winner!!!

    I do miss the non electric parking break. I think for sport models they should not include that but then again car manufacture would have to re design a new chassis would that cos t way more? I do realize that the hatchback are built in the UK so I do believe they coupe / sedan are very different so the hatchback which are the sport S I and type R can be made differently with a hang parking break ! ????
