I'm a 38yo married guy with 2 kids and my Championship White 2019 will be arriving next month! I think they nailed the styling and it matches the cars personality. Can't wait for mine!
I just bought my 2019 R in sporty brilliant blue, 56 years old, love the looks, drive and sound. Everything about it is superb, when commuting to work and back it's just like a a normal drive in comfort mode and even reasonable mpg, plus it doesn't wake the neighbors when starting her. Come to the weekend and it's like I bought a different car, stick her in sport and I just can't take the smile off my face. Add the fact that complete strangers will start chatting to you about her at any given moment. It's the best car I've ever owned and I've had RS,s GTIs, ST's and lots of family cars.Brilliant car just brilliant.
Toby i have the FK8 in Sporty Blue as well, best car i have ever driven. Wonderful gearbox and the handling is sublime. Oh i am 61yrs old, your just a youngster. :)
I am 44 years old and have owned many Hondas. I had a 1988 Honda CRX HF, a 1992 Honda Civic hatchback DX, a 2002 Honda Civic SI ep3, a 2012 Honda Civic SI sedan, a 2002 Honda S2000 AP1, and now, the 2018 type-r. I loved the S2000 but it had no room and the rear end was very squirrely. The 9200 red line was insane and it was an awesome car for its purpose. 2018 type-r is simply amazing from its handling, to power delivery, to appearance, to functionality, to practicality, liveability and everything else the car encompasses. I liked it so much I got a 10 year 100,000 mile warranty on it Bumper to Bumper zero deductible. This is the best handling car I've ever owned and I look forward to many many many years of ownership.
My high school friend's parents bought a Civic for $5000 new in 1984. I asked my parents to get me a Civic when I finished High School. Was a 73 Civic. I drove it a year then almost died in a head on accident in 85. Later in 88 I got my first new Honda, a CRX. Then 90 Prelude with 4 wheel steering, 92 Prelude with 4 wheel steering. Then I moved out on my own and sold the Prelude to get a 94 Civic HF Hatch. I didn't like it much for ego. :P I traded it in 95 for a black Del Sol, then 98 Prelude, 2002 S2000, 2006 Acura TL, 2009 TL SHAWD 6speed. All were manuals. 2016 I got my first automatic and hated it. A MDX. After 2 years I sold it and just drive my work car, a 2016 CRV while waiting for Type R. Before the CRV my company bought me a Element at my request. I drove it 10 years till I was rear ended by a texting girl. The Type R came to the dealership just a week ago and it will be on display at the Quad Cities Auto Show 2/8 - 2/10/19 then I get to take it home. I can't get off the Honda train.
Hi Pete. Got my blue type r today. Tell you what mate, what a car. I have a huge smile on my face, amazing handling and performance. Love the way it looks. Btw I am 60 yrs old, your review was spot on.
Been driving the 18 CTR daily for over a year - US spec polished metal - incredible drivers car and so practical - 69 year old motor head and its the most fun per $$ ever - thanks for the video, still my favorite a year later!
how you getting on with the type R..i want to buy one but not sure i am brave enough being 53..but i absolutely love this car..do you get any negative or rude comments..
When random youtube videos take you to the best car reviews ever. Brilliant, real reviews for real petrol heads. Im 48 , got a typical German family car but my fave car is my DC2 Integra type r, 14 years of ownership and stil love it. Might grow up and get a fast Audi, but not just yet.
Just found this video now a few years later and it is still very relevant, especially to me because it took all that time for me to be in a position to get this car and your comments are spot on! This car is a modern classic and so refreshing in a time of electric and autonomous vehicles becoming more popular. Not just that, but so many cars now insolate and isolate the driver from the driving experience so much you do not have to have an autonomous vehicle for the car to do most of the driving for you. Not with the Type R. As was said in the video, it is truly a driver's car . I am in my mid forties, I am a husband and a dad and the Type R has room for my family and groceries and it can be used as a daily AND it has that Honda reliability. I love the looks of this car and the driving experience is sublime but as was mentioned the sound was a let down, at first. I have a 2019 version of the Type R and Honda did not change the exhaust. At this time we also have the exceptional Hyundai Veloster N. The Veloster N can't compete with the Type R but it is a very competent hot hatch in its own right, fun to drive and makes some outstanding crackles and pops. I said I appreciate the Type R's sound more now after owning it because where I live the houses are close together. I have a neighbor close to me with a couple of motorcycles. Even with the windows closed, you can hear those motorcycles fire up and rip up and done the street and it can be quite annoying. I did not want to be that annoying neighbor and with the Type R, I am not. BTW all my neighbor love the way this car looks. Even without knowing what is it they can see it is something special. Keep up the great work! Subscribed!
The sound it makes are for Stealth Drivers like myself...who don't want the attention. But there should be a LOUD button to make it sound like a Beast for track use for sure
Watched your video, test drove one today for half an hour, signing the contract end of the week... best affordable car I've ever driven! Thanks for your review mate :)
Excellent review - have seen just about all respectable reviews on RUclips of the Type R FK8 so far. Krylon69, just wondering if you got your R and how you are getting along with it; also, what car did you move on from? Reason for asking? I am 47 and have been driving an A45 AMG - a brutally fast car but lacking in engagement (this is my daily) and while some people are compaling about the lack of noise from the Type R the AMG's always ON character is a bit too much. The looks of the Type R are growing on me and the plan is to test-drive one on the weekend . Tx G
Well I don’t care what the public thought about the styling ,for me there is nothing else like it and is the point So without much hesitation I brought my 2020 fk8 gt In white ,and I love it !
Hi Ped, another great presentation. I drive this generation 1.5 Sport turbo & I love it. The type R including the previous generation are a tad over the top for my taste but then again I am a bit of a wrinkly . As you say there aren't many young chaps who it's aimed at can afford 33K & what's their insurance gonna be. I'm sticking with my 1500 , best car I've ever had & ive been Honda for 25 years.
Will be trading my 1.5 sport eventually for the Type R. Great car, Pete. You seemed to be having a wonderful time diving this car. Also I am 60 yrs old and the styling for me is wonderful. A lot of cars these days are quite frankly boring to look at, this stands out which i like.
Great FK8 review Pete. They are such drivers cars. I'm test driving next week and looking forward to the comparison against my FK2. The introduction of a softer damper setting will def make it more of a everyday car plus this one has fully independent rear suspension vs torsion beam on the 2015 car. The rev match is another cool feature over the previous gen. The looks as we know won't appeal to all. The noise just does not compare to A45/RS3 likes and you won't stand a chance against AWD cars at the traffic light Grand Prix. In the twisty stuff though with that gearbox wow!!! FK2 will be a future classic though as so few were made plus it was the 1st Turbo Type R!!!
Sorry, cannot agree with this statement. The new generation of Type Rs are numb. Yes, they are quicker, put in better laptimes, but It does not make them a better car. You won't, and never will beat a EK9, DC2, EP3, or DC5 for that matter. I've driven this and all it had was power, and torque steer. Not a bad car, but not a drivers car with all those aids. A drivers car is a Lotus, or a Caterham. If you drive one, you will see what I mean, it makes these new gen cars numb.
I love it ! Always wanted one of these back in the day...but sadly never got one...had a vfr400 loved it !!! Had a normal 1.6 civic epic engine!!! Would I buy one ??? Hell yes !!! Just a small problem...money 🤔...lack of...but hey I'm a dreamer..great review and loved the other sport one you did too...this car pulls off being Fun...not too look at me...and people like it !! Would be a pleasure cleaning this on a sunday afternoon after taking her out in the early morning for spin 👌
Everyone talks about the looks saying they're aimed at people who can't afford the car. Honda are not struggling to find buyers, quite the opposite :) I mentioned previously that there's a rear dimple where a diff could go for awd. I've had the car for a while now and I'm pretty sure it doesn't need it. I've learned how to pull out in 1st in the rain without spinning the wheels so I think it would just add weight. In the wet it actually handles amazingly well. The brakes are still effective and it still maintains buckets of lateral grip.
Sorry, one more response. There's also an additional wing you can option which goes over the top dinosaur bits. It's about £500 from memory. So far I seem to be the only person who optioned it, but it absolutely rocks.
I love the style and drive of this car. I’m 40 years old, married with a kid and mortgage and still feel like an 18year old. This car is beyond all expectations. Have driven an F355, 911 turbo (something or other), a pro drive group A rally car, an Audi RS4 etc. I bought one in this colour. This is better. It looks amazing. Loads of people don’t know what it is and it pulls like a hell hound. I would recommend this to anyone who likes driving and has real blood in their veins. These are cars that cost many times more than this that are no where near as planted or as good.
40 year old man, put a deposit down on a grey FK8 at Hendy Honda Portsmouth, hopefully picking it up next week! Justifying it as a 40th birthday present to myself ;) my dad has always loved cars and wants to do the circuit drives like Spa, Nurburgring etc and this is the car for it. I kind of think you get two cars in one with the FK8, you can drive it like any other Civic in comfort mode as a daily driver and then turn it into a track weapon in +R mode. I'll be part-ex'ing a 1.8 2012 Civic which hasn't missed a beat in nearly 5 years, so I have very high hopes for this car! The 3-way adaptive dampers is just the cherry on the cake. Not that I would, but had I gone down the Mercedes A45 AMG route I'd be looking at £60k and the adaptive dampers would be an optional extra! So, shout out to Honda for being generous with their spec.
Ordering 2 of these in the gt trim on Tuesday. I am 33 and I actually really like how it looks. I don’t intend to use it as a street racing car but I have never owned a performance car and if I am paying out over £30k I think it should somewhat stand out. Great review, you say it as it is. I test drove it and it put a smile on my face. To those who have never owned anything over 150 bhp like myself then I believe it would also put a smile on your face too. The boot space for a hatchback is pretty impressive too. Only downside was it only have 4 seats instead of 5. Best review on this car I have seen 👍🏻
Petrol Ped championship white for my partner and crystal black pearl for myself. I would of liked the polished metal metallic but it is a 2 to 4 month wait and I can’t wait. I was looking at a gti performance prior but it kept getting delayed so have already waited over a month to get a car. The good thing is, I actually prefer the type R so I guess it has gone in my favour, plus I am getting a brand new car from the factory now instead of an ex demo 😁
My son and I are both sick. So we hopped on RUclips to watch car reviews. Found your channel this morning and haven't stopped watching your hot hatch reviews for over 2 hours. By the way my son is 2 years old and he picked the videos lol. We've watched the focus rs and lancer evolution fq40 with the Subaru comparison video. the amg 45 Mercedes and the Honda Civic type r one so far. You videos have had his attention the whole time. Keep up the good work!
Wow...this is so cool ! Welcome to the channel and I'm glad you are enjoying taking a look around. What is your sons name and where in the world are you ?
also I really like the look on the new generation Honda civic type r. its in my opinion the best looking one so far. a fun fact I drive a chevy cobalt ss 4 door and I really do like my little car.
Your absolutely right mate it is a fantastic car. I got to drive one at Honda 6-8 weeks ago as arrived the day I had my dad's car booked in for a service. It was in the same colour you drove and on the test drive day in had been raining and the car held the road superbly for a front wheel drive car. I am use to 4wd as my Audi S4 is and my previous cars too. But so impressed with the previous type r and this new one blew me away. I prefer the looks and the interior build quality is spot on too. Great video and review as always! 👍
Clearly an awesome car. Honda did a great job. And we haven't even touched on Honda's overall record of reliability and owner satisfaction. Its definitely a great car. The exterior is a little busy for me, but that wouldn't stop me from purchasing it.
Well I like it as I've ordered one 😃 pick it up end of this month. I'm coming from a mk2 Focus RS with lots of noise. But I'm not buying for the sound as this thing drives great 👍🏻 as for looks I think it's how it sound be... hot hatches are looking far to plain for me. This thing reminds me of the good old days of the 80's with the mad group b rally cars and how they looked. Well done Honda for being different 👍🏻👍🏻
Stop crying out for noise. It is fantastic you can drive this car for four hours straight and have no headache. Hats off to Honda for this advantage. Anybody who wants to get noise can get his fix on the aftermarket, something that is not possible vice versa!!!
Glad you were complimentary about the new Civic Sport, because I bought one. I’ve had it for nearly a year and I think I’ve fallen for it all over again. Sure I would like a type R, but I doubt if I’d ever find a space on our roads to utilise it. The Sport is adequate for overtaking on A & B roads etc. Like your reviews. Cheers, Pete
Just sold my mk3 focus rs for the fk8 type R, the focus was just too difficult to live with on a daily basis, and i had catastrophic engine failure at 9K miles, took 5 weeks to fix, the fk8 is night and day better than the focus in all aspects except for noise.
Great review I love the way you put over genuine excitement you feel. And on the styling I think it's about right it's a hot hatch and as such it looks like one I think many other manufacturers have just gone a little soft / safe.
Had an testdrive yesterday on the roads around town and autobahn got only to 214km/h due to crowdy traffic. The car is awesome, I'm upgrading from te fiesta St. Totally love the manual gearbox. The ride in comfort is pretty smooth and the seats are great (even my girlfriend likes it and she is always critical on that part). Ordered Polished metal in GT variant, Looks great in real life.
I’ve got the fk2 which I believe will be worth more than the new one in a few years. Is the fk8 as raw as the old one? That’s why I love it, proper drivers car. I don’t find the ride harsh at all but I’m coming from a modified abarth lol.
Great review. The looks are ok, only thing that I don't like are the 4 corners of the car with those black plastic grilles. If they were just normal bodywork it would look so much better. Therefore, I would get it in black, less noticeable. However, I'm worried of going back to front wheel drive after owning rear wheel for few years now. Oh and the noise, yes could do with few pops and bangs.
I bought a 1.5 sport on the strength of your review and I’m over the moon with it however after 2 weeks of ownership it had to go back in for a new switchgear for the brake hold function. Virtu Honda of Doncaster borrowed me a Type R for 3 days and I was distraught when I had to give it back. Car design will always be subjective but I love this 10th generation civic and the Type R blew me away….. Another brilliant review.
Great review Pete, not sure the music selection in the transitions were quite appropriate (piano music?) but the review was very concise. It makes me want to try it out too.
Awesome video. Love all type r's. But it's taking a while for me to get used to the looks, especially the back. But it is growing on me. Looks better in the flesh than on video or in pictures 👍👌
Fab review as usual Peter. Great car. Ticks a lot of boxes and looks great fun to drive. I think this would be 3rd on my list with the Audi RS3 being first, mainly because if the sound from that fabulous 5 cylinder engine, then followed by the Golf R for its build quality. Cheers. Jon.
Nice one Pete. I love my Civic Sport, i know CVT has a bad name but i find no issues with it. The car is quick and in heavy traffic auto is the way too go. If i could have afford a Type R i would have bought one, what a wonderful car, and now with comfort mode a daily driver.
It's amazing. I sort of hope they fill in the underbody dimples with a lightweight selectively active 4wd, just to mitigate the 1st, 2nd and (when it's wet) 3rd gear wheel spin. But that's road driving. It's an amazing thing and Honda should be extremely proud.
Hi Pete. Love your videos. I drive a new A5 2.0 TFSi and keep my car for 2 years. Looking at a 718 cayman or TTS for my next car on the 69plate. How do you think the Civic compares at that level as an everyday car ? Very Best
Wow, quite different cars,Coupe vs hatch. However they are share one thing and that is they are all great drivers cars. The Type R is much less subtle to look at, which puts many people off, but if you like the styling then its a big contender. Certainly more practical ! Please let me know which you choose ? I'd go for the TTS ;-)
We'll I am 40 and love it but if I turned up to my folks in it they would hate it.Maybe I'll buy one just to really annoy them.Great review keep up the great work.
Nice video Peter and a truly awesome car. Never seen a grey metallic one till your video and I like it a lot, A good review and I was sorry to hear about the drive shaft in the 620R, a little embarrassing for Caterham and yourself methinks!!!
Hi Rob. Love your new wheels to :-) The 620R can be fixed, it just screwed my Wales plans up which is gutting as I had been looking forward to that trip for a very long time :-(
Hi Pete. Ordering my Type R in blue tomorrow, cannot wait. Got the sport turbo at the moment, but this is on another level. Could you tell me which roads did you test the car on? Would like to try the same route.
@@PetrolPed Thanks for the reply, Pete. Is coming on blue and gone for the GT version. Went for a test drive today, the response of the car especially around corners just amazing. I was also impressed how comfortable the car was in all modes. Also looking forward to trying the road you used, should be fun.
Just bought a new one of these, great car but I am having issues with 4th gear occasionally locking out when changing down from 5th. Honda has stated that there is not fix for this, so pot luck when you buy one.
Great review. Kate, my other half used to have one of these before I met her. She is looking to take one of this gen out at some point. I know it's not RS6 realms, but is it in the RS3 circle? I love it's styling. Space age and sweet angles.
Can you comment on the ride quality between the Type R and Focus RS? I made the mistake of buying a Focus RS with only a test drive around the block and found out later just how punishing the ride was I had to sell it after one year. I'm hoping the ride quality in the Type R is much more civilized for a daily driver. I don't want to make the same mistake again. I currently drive a 2017 Volkswagen GTI so if you can let me know how the Type R rides in comparison to the GTI that would be great.
This marque of Type R has a comfort mode which improves the ride comfort hugely compared to the outgoing model. However, in comfort I'd say it's about the same as the Focus. Although I've not driven them back to back ! When you put it in the R+ mode it is very firm on the road !
Petrol Ped thanks for your reply. Most journalist have commented that the Type R in Comfort mode is much more compliant than the Focus RS in its normal setting and the type R is much easier to live with as a daily driver.
I was avidly watching the development of this car over the previous years, why oh why did they make the 5 door, the three door coupe was the best I had seen, but not put into production. I was invited to look at the car by Honda Plymouth prior to being put into the showroom, same colour spec, I just could not see myself in it, the tech speaks for itself. I am still happy & continue to drive MY2017 Astra GTC VXR in carbon flash black. Yes, it has the bi-plane kit etc but I bought a brand new MY2015 Arden without the kit, but it is no more, hence the black fully loaded option. I still like the VXR the grip is outstanding and it looks great as a 3 door coupe, why not drive one. The gearbox throw is a little long for my liking, 1st-2nd is abissmal :) I could go on.....
Came to this review as I wanted to see what PetrolPed thought of it and as I have changed my mind of the looks of it I have been thinking of swapping my 07 30k grey S2000 for one. The dealer (Honda at Vannes, France) who are young kids and just not the dealer experience I am used to in UK, no sale pitch. Anyway, they told me to stick with the S2000. So, the styling, for me its different and distinctive, thats why I like it When it came out I said oh my god what have they done, but its won me over. My S2000 is getting tired but still pleases me but its getting on and I might swap both my S2000 and CRV for the Type R. Because I wont have a S2000 as well I do think i will be sorry to get rid of it. Enjoyed the video and it just tells me to get one but I have a hold on the S2000
What a great review, thank you! It looks like a properly fun thing to drive...but...but...sadly, nope. I just couldn't live with that 'out there' styling myself. (I'm 42 and married with two kids though; so faaar too old and boring to be allowed to comment on the looks or practicality with any kind of authority.) I had an early EP3 Type R "bread van" for 3 years in a past life, and bloody LOVED it!! On the right roads, with that sublime gear change, and that high-end Vtec wail, it seriously rocked - I imagine this model is similar with added raaarrrr and a turbo. V.Nice. Not for me atm, but maybe, one day, I will reclaim my 'yoof' in a similar incarnation. Cheers. :)
Sounds alright in your review! Great review Peter. Thank you. Let's face it, it's not pretty, but something very compelling about it! This Civic Type R or the A45 AMG, for your daily driver?
Ooo...tough question ! If I had to choose I would have to go for the AMG as there is no way Mrs Petrol Ped would drive the Type R as in her words it's too 'boy racer' for her and she really liked the A45. As a car to drive I'd have the Type R !
Much appreciated Pete. I wondered what were your reasons for choosing the TTS over a Cayman/Boxster? I like your transparency and honesty on your reviews. I recently saw your review on the TTS and I know you've owned several TT's and think highly of them. It is the one that I would choose too as I genuinely believe that of the 3 its the best option as daily transport. My thoughts are that the TT has just about enough carrying space for my day to day job and more than the Cayman. The Type R just doesn't seem a realistic choice at this level when compared to this type of competition. Its too outlandish and not the right status in terms of image when turning up at customers. As my job entails travelling 25k +miles every year, I also feel that whilst good for a blast at the weekend, it wouldn't be as enjoyable to live with every day and if im totally honest Im also a little bit of a badge snob. The Porsche always seems to get the vast majority of the regular motoring journalists waxing lyrical about the purity of the driving experience yet they bitch about the lack of a 6cyl soundtrack and Porsches decision to move from a normally aspirated 6 cyl to 4cyl turbo power. It always seems to me that unless a car is capable of scaring them in handling extremis in their opinion it isn't worthy of being called a sports car. Nobody can drive in that way on public roads on a regular basis and keep their licence and whilst I would consider myself to be a competent, enthusiastic and spirited driver (im 58 yrs old) Im certainly not good enough to be experimenting with traction control off, with oversteer/understeer at 100mph+ on public roads. Plus the fact that sadly lease cars aren't allowed on a race track !! ;-). I have had several BM's, a couple of merc coupes 250 & 350, a CLS and as you know my current 2017 TFSi 4cyl A5 is no slouch. Thats why I think the TTS would be a significant step up from the A5 in performance terms and a much nicer, higher tech driving environment (cockpit tech and quality) and daily feel good factor than the Cayman. After all, specced up to even a reasonable level the Cayman would be silly money for a 4cyl base model Porsche . The CO2 emissions/ BIK tax are also a consideration and are much greater on a fully specced Cayman. Also 4WD is a massive plus with the UK climate being what it is and certainly safer than RWD in standing water, snow and ice !! much appreciated mate ;-)
My wife and I are big Audi fans. I've had a couple of TTs and she has an S4. The TTS is a very good car, although I would actually look for a used TT RS as they are simply amazing ! The 718 Cayman is superb. I don't have a problem with the 4 cylinder engine. The standard car is quick, but again I'd be tempted by the S model. Either of these could be a daily for me. I'd go for the TT Roadster and Boxster though as I like my soft tops :-) Good as the Type R is I can't see me using it as a daily and I'm not sure Mrs PP would want to be seen in it !!
Feels a little tighter and twitchy. The ride is firmer and it certainly feels great through the corners. The S4 has a little more grunt and obviously the four wheel drive helps you apply power in more situations. I think the S4 feels a little more civilised but they are both very quick cars. I think the Type R would be a better car to take on a track day.
Petrol Ped maybe if the s4 had some tweaks to make it more race focused e.g. stiffer springs better tyres and lighter wheels then would no brainer cheers pp
+Peter Rayner Oh tough call ! The Type R is great to drive but really needs more noise. The RS sounds amazing and has a more subtle look, however I would be worried about all the engine problems they have been having. I love them both and would happily buy either however If it was my money I’d probably buy a year old ex-demonstrator Audi RS3 😜
I was really unsure about the looks especially at the age of 56, I thought it was simply too boy racer for me.... until I test drove one, after which I didn't care any more about the look and just handed over my .money lol best car I've ever owned... absolutely brilliant car.
I have an FK2 Type R and while the ride is firm it was far worse on my FN2 and the EP3... I've also driven various other "normal" cars and the ride in many of those is worse than the ride in my FK2. I guess some people like the fact the FK8 offers the comfort mode but I would be surprised if many people who buy Type R's will use it. Am I tempted by the FK8.... not sure it's enough of a change to warrant getting it, I think the FK2 is better looking but the new one is distinctive...... maybe I will wait for the next one.. :)
Great review, I'm not 100% convinced on the looks....I guess it's my age! but if you can overcome that it's got to be the best hot hatch at any price. To fix the lack of noise issue Honda should release a bi-modal exhaust as Mini have on the F56 hatch. :)
Tbh it's growing on me this new type r i hated the 3 pipe exhaust at first and the front end i thought looked awful but i must admit it's slowly growing on me.Many people will say this car looks over the top but isn't that the whole point of a real hot hatch they should be shouty and in your face and look aggressive has hell
I agree and talking to Honda, most of the styling on the outside has a purpose. There is a great deal of air management going on. When you see one in the flesh it really does look cool and it's definitely a grower !
PreciousMetalinvest I know this. I own an ek9 myself. But to disregard this fact is poor. Like an American reviewer calling the R35 GTR a gen 1 as they doesn’t get any of the previous GTR’s in the US.....
Looks great inside and the performance is vivid but the bits hanging off it are not needed for 95% of the time. Please test it alongside a Renault 275 SR Trophy which I live everyday
I dont know why people complaint about the ext styling?!?! I love it!!! It looks futuristic!!! Beautiful!!!!!
I know, I love mine
I'm a 38yo married guy with 2 kids and my Championship White 2019 will be arriving next month! I think they nailed the styling and it matches the cars personality. Can't wait for mine!
Mate, your new car sounds awesome. Enjoy 👍
One of these best drivers cars out there 👍
Toby i have the FK8 in Sporty Blue as well, best car i have ever driven.
You like Honda then ?!
You are right, the S2000 was a little twitchy at the rear. Especially when the tyres were worn and it was wet !
The 10 years warranty is include or an extra you paid for ? Just to compare depending the countries. Thanks
@@djorksolo8544
I paid for it... But it was so inexpensive. Gives me serious peace of mind... Bumper to bumper.. Zero deductible....
@@davidalan2469 you're a true Honda guy, I can respect that. You will love your type R. It's just an amazing vehicle.
42 years old not a teenager and I love the looks of it. I like the room of hatchbacks, manual transmission, and corners. I may get one of these.
I'm 45 and I like to too ;-)
Im almost 40 I would consider one without the spoiler.
I'm 60 and like it but i would need a sunroof and a sportier sounding exhaust!
@@teggsy2165 Agreed ! All Japan sport cars got sunroof before, now It's like most of them don't have ! Miss it too !
Hi Pete. Got my blue type r today. Tell you what mate, what a car. I have a huge smile on my face, amazing handling and performance. Love the way it looks. Btw I am 60 yrs old, your review was spot on.
Oh wow...they look awesome in blue. You are going to have that smile for a long time 👍
@@PetrolPed Thanks mate, yep the smile is pretty much permanent at the moment :)
Driving my US Spec Type R for about a month now with some longish interstate runs. To me the sound of the car is very refined and perfect
I also am a 55 year old man .I am thinking seriously about buying one .. it looks fantastic .The reviews all over the world are superb ..
They are just brilliant to drive :-)
Been driving the 18 CTR daily for over a year - US spec polished metal - incredible drivers car and so practical - 69 year old motor head and its the most fun per $$ ever - thanks for the video, still my favorite a year later!
I bought myself a civic type R championgship white, for my 60 birthday because the wing, and it came home 10 days ago, I love it.
how you getting on with the type R..i want to buy one but not sure i am brave enough being 53..but i absolutely love this car..do you get any negative or rude comments..
When random youtube videos take you to the best car reviews ever. Brilliant, real reviews for real petrol heads. Im 48 , got a typical German family car but my fave car is my DC2 Integra type r, 14 years of ownership and stil love it. Might grow up and get a fast Audi, but not just yet.
....”a gearbox can make a car....”. So true...👍
Oh yes. I still dream about the gearbox in my S2000....absolutely brilliant !
It is neat have chose wrong gear couple of times auto blip saved me lifting clutch 😥
Or break a car. Gearbox grind anyone?
I NEED THIS CAR IN MY LIFE
I owned 2 EP3 cars many years ago and I’m now looking for an FK8. Your review has helped in convincing me to buy one now. Thanks
Subscribed!
Loved this and thanks for the Sub. Welcome to the channel 👍
The sound it makes are for Stealth Drivers like myself...who don't want the attention. But there should be a LOUD button to make it sound like a Beast for track use for sure
Good point :-)
So true ! A good active exhaust as option would be perfect !
Watched your video, test drove one today for half an hour, signing the contract end of the week... best affordable car I've ever driven! Thanks for your review mate :)
Wow, pleased I could help. Enjoy the new car 👍
Tx G
Well I don’t care what the public thought about the styling ,for me there is nothing else like it and is the point
So without much hesitation I brought my 2020 fk8 gt In white ,and I love it !
Cool 👍
Hi Ped, another great presentation. I drive this generation 1.5 Sport turbo & I love it. The type R including the previous generation are a tad over the top for my taste but then again I am a bit of a wrinkly . As you say there aren't many young chaps who it's aimed at can afford 33K & what's their insurance gonna be. I'm sticking with my 1500 , best car I've ever had & ive been Honda for 25 years.
Shane, you car is a corker. I loved driving the 1.5 Sport. It is clear from the comments that the styling of the new Type R will divide opinion.
Love how crazy it looks, can't wait to get it.
I've over 40 and I think the car looks fantastic. Glad to see Honda spicing up their looks, been to drab for too long!
Very true !
Will be trading my 1.5 sport eventually for the Type R. Great car, Pete. You seemed to be having a wonderful time diving this car. Also I am 60 yrs old and the styling for me is wonderful. A lot of cars these days are quite frankly boring to look at, this stands out which i like.
Love your style and congrats on the new car :-)
Best review of type R so far! Best colour too. Well done, I actually love the in your face styling.
Great car love the looks & best interior I'd have it over a Focus Rs
Me too :-)
Great FK8 review Pete.
I am not a biker but I absolutely loved the VFR400 👌
Everyone talks about the looks saying they're aimed at people who can't afford the car. Honda are not struggling to find buyers, quite the opposite :)
I mentioned previously that there's a rear dimple where a diff could go for awd.
I like the feel of a front wheel drive car and this is one of the best. It would be awesome with AWD and another 50bhp though :-)
Great review as usual! Thanks.
Incredible car. Agree particularly about the sound: a decent exhaust sound adds so much theatre!
Nice 👌
Had the Mk1... incredible drive! Thanks Pete, watching your back catalogue.
Thanks Gary, glad you enjoyed my review and enjoy the new car. What colour have you gone for ?
What is your sons name and where in the world are you ?
my sons name is Leon and were from the USA we reside in the state of Michigan. your videos are really enjoyable to watch.
also I really like the look on the new generation Honda civic type r. its in my opinion the best looking one so far. a fun fact I drive a chevy cobalt ss 4 door and I really do like my little car.
Cheers Colton. Great to know I'm reaching that far :-)
Excellent review. I'm on my second Civic now but would love a type R GT. One day . Beautiful car.
Thanks mate. They are great aren't they and would give my S4 a run for it's money :-)
Clearly an awesome car. Honda did a great job. And we haven't even touched on Honda's overall record of reliability and owner satisfaction. Its definitely a great car. The exterior is a little busy for me, but that wouldn't stop me from purchasing it.
I have in the past. Honda cars are generally bullet proof !
Agreed. Enjoy the new car :-)
Awesome!!!!! Absolutely love the looks of the new Type R!!! One of my dream Honda's !!!!
They are fab :-)
Stop crying out for noise. It is fantastic you can drive this car for four hours straight and have no headache. Hats off to Honda for this advantage. Anybody who wants to get noise can get his fix on the aftermarket, something that is not possible vice versa!!!
Good point but my argument would be if Honda did it then it would be an even better car :-)
Cheers Pete. The Sport is brilliant !
Just sold my mk3 focus rs for the fk8 type R, the focus was just too difficult to live with on a daily basis, and i had catastrophic engine failure at 9K miles, took 5 weeks to fix, the fk8 is night and day better than the focus in all aspects except for noise.
Engine problems would concern me when it comes to the Focus. Glad you love your new car...and that gearbox :-)
Great review I love the way you put over genuine excitement you feel. And on the styling I think it's about right it's a hot hatch and as such it looks like one I think many other manufacturers have just gone a little soft / safe.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed the vid and I agree with you about the styling !
Good to see your vids, because you drive n explain that
Had an testdrive yesterday on the roads around town and autobahn got only to 214km/h due to crowdy traffic. The car is awesome, I'm upgrading from te fiesta St. Totally love the manual gearbox. The ride in comfort is pretty smooth and the seats are great (even my girlfriend likes it and she is always critical on that part). Ordered Polished metal in GT variant, Looks great in real life.
Cool. When do you expect delivery ?
Next year, march exactly
I’ve got the fk2 which I believe will be worth more than the new one in a few years. Is the fk8 as raw as the old one? That’s why I love it, proper drivers car. I don’t find the ride harsh at all but I’m coming from a modified abarth lol.
LOL 😂
Absolutely love this, don’t care about the looks, amazing motor and would love to own one
Amazing car to drive 👌
Great review. The looks are ok, only thing that I don't like are the 4 corners of the car with those black plastic grilles. If they were just normal bodywork it would look so much better. Therefore, I would get it in black, less noticeable.
However, I'm worried of going back to front wheel drive after owning rear wheel for few years now.
Oh and the noise, yes could do with few pops and bangs.
Picking up a Rallye Red one in around a week. Even more excited after this review.
Nice 👍 Congratulations 👏
I bought a 1.5 sport on the strength of your review and I’m over the moon with it however after 2 weeks of ownership it had to go back in for a new switchgear for the brake hold function. Virtu Honda of Doncaster borrowed me a Type R for 3 days and I was distraught when I had to give it back. Car design will always be subjective but I love this 10th generation civic and the Type R blew me away….. Another brilliant review.
Great to hear 👍
Great review Pete, not sure the music selection in the transitions were quite appropriate (piano music?) but the review was very concise. It makes me want to try it out too.
Thanks for the feedback. You should definitely try one !
Awesome video. Love all type r's. But it's taking a while for me to get used to the looks, especially the back. But it is growing on me. Looks better in the flesh than on video or in pictures 👍👌
Totally agree and in the colour of the one tested it looks pretty special !
Cheers. Jon.
That would be a nice stable !
Nice one Pete. I love my Civic Sport, i know CVT has a bad name but i find no issues with it. The car is quick and in heavy traffic auto is the way too go. If i could have afford a Type R i would have bought one, what a wonderful car, and now with comfort mode a daily driver.
No CVT option on the Type R though ! Comfort mode makes all the difference.
SO SO WANT A TYPE R again !!! That is awesome !!! and well reviewed!
Cheers Trevor :-)
Hi Peter all I can say is you can't see the outside when your having so much fun inside Nice bit of kit 👍🏁
Exactly !
The different modes don't limit HP, you get full power in all of them if you floor it. I've had one since launch and it is insanely good :)
I think the Sport mode and the R mode sharpens up throttle response over the Comfort mode, could give you the sensation of it feeling more powerful.
Nice review I love this car I need to know is that car ok to drive daily for work as I do 50 miles a day
Absolutely :-)
My ep3 is going to sit in the garage because I’m getting one these beasts
Lucky you :-)
It's amazing. I sort of hope they fill in the underbody dimples with a lightweight selectively active 4wd, just to mitigate the 1st, 2nd and (when it's wet) 3rd gear wheel spin. But that's road driving. It's an amazing thing and Honda should be extremely proud.
Four wheel drive would be amazing 👍
Nice review! I like the part with suspension. How is about noise inside?
I got Civic 2010. It's little bit noisy on highways.
Road noise it pretty good. It just needs more noise from the engine !
LOL. I know what you mean :-)
A32 Wickham to Corhampton to West Meon :-)
Enjoy the new car...I know you will !
@@PetrolPed Thanks for the reply, Pete. Is coming on blue and gone for the GT version. Went for a test drive today, the response of the car especially around corners just amazing. I was also impressed how comfortable the car was in all modes. Also looking forward to trying the road you used, should be fun.
Also Pete which would you choose out of the 3 if you could only have one of them and had to keep it for 2 years?
Audi TTS ;-)
Buying my 2019 championship white this week in Pennsylvania
Nice...enjoy 👌
Good review. Like you, I'm not sure on the looks though. So this or the Focus RS ?
This ! I'd be too worried about engine issues with the RS !
looks great ,should also have option to have proper colour alloys
Hitting 40 soon and bought myself a grey fk8! 3 kids and a not so impressed wife haha! Can't wait
Brilliant 👏👏👏
Love this car in that color. Looks so slick
There are superb to drive and I agree, this colour is lovely :-)
So, the styling, for me its different and distinctive, thats why I like it
When it came out I said oh my god what have they done, but its won me over.
Wish I still had my S2000 😬
Great video as usual Mr Ped! When is my 2017 Abarth Trofeo going to be in the spotlight of Mr Petrol Ped!
There is the new Accord 2.0 turbo sport with 6 speed manual coming up soon. Will you be able to drive it too for review?
That sounds interesting. I'll see what I can do ;-)
Great review!!! Would you prefer this or the Focus RS you've previously tested
Focus for the power, exhaust noise and AWD but this for the gearbox and driving feel 😜
Cheers. :)
Oy...you are 3 years younger than me ;-)
Sounds alright in your review!
I'd go for the TT Roadster and Boxster though as I like my soft tops :-)
Good as the Type R is I can't see me using it as a daily and I'm not sure Mrs PP would want to be seen in it !!
Just test drove one of these, what a fantastic car. 👍
Mega aren’t they 👍
Had a drive of the I 30N too and was very impressed until I drove the Type R. My wife loved the Type R, will be a nice 60th birthday present. 😀😀😀
Great honest review, would agree with all you said. The looks and sound are the only let down, the engineering is first rate.
Cheers Mark :-)
Hi how does it compare to the s4.? I'm curious about the type r and wander if it would be a worthy replacement for the s4.
Hi mate now you have driven both the Focus RS and the Type R. Which one would you buy if it was your money.
A great drivers car 👍
I have an FK2 Type R and while the ride is firm it was far worse on my FN2 and the EP3... I've also driven various other "normal" cars and the ride in many of those is worse than the ride in my FK2. I guess some people like the fact the FK8 offers the comfort mode but I would be surprised if many people who buy Type R's will use it. Am I tempted by the FK8.... not sure it's enough of a change to warrant getting it, I think the FK2 is better looking but the new one is distinctive...... maybe I will wait for the next one.. :)
There are some pretty good sounding exhausts now
Didn't think it would take long 👍
The rear lights reminded me of a Dutch cottage roof..
I like the look (and I'm the wrong side if 50). Great video Mr P.
No such thing as the wrong side of 50 mate ;-)
Great review, I'm not 100% convinced on the looks....I guess it's my age! but if you can overcome that it's got to be the best hot hatch at any price. To fix the lack of noise issue Honda should release a bi-modal exhaust as Mini have on the F56 hatch. :)
For the money it is great value. Like I say, forget the looks and get on and drive !
Not a fan of the spoiler but other than that car looks amazing. Great review also.
Cheers :-)
Pete is auto blip available in all modes, comfort sport and R ?
I’m not sure it did it in Normal. To be guest though I can’t remember 😬
Ok thanks for reply
Gen 4?!?
EK9 gen 1, EP3 gen 2, FN2 and FD2 gen 3, FK2 gen 4, then this FK8
Research.
Point taken :-)
tegboyek9 - he's right from a UK point of view because the EK9 was never officially sold in the U.K., all EK9s in U.K. are imports
PreciousMetalinvest I know this. I own an ek9 myself. But to disregard this fact is poor. Like an American reviewer calling the R35 GTR a gen 1 as they doesn’t get any of the previous GTR’s in the US.....
Love the styling. Can't understand why top gear slated the looks.
You either love them or hate them 😂
Great review as always
Cheers Scott :-)
Looks great inside and the performance is vivid but the bits hanging off it are not needed for 95% of the time. Please test it alongside a Renault 275 SR Trophy which I live everyday
I like the looks, and I'd also turn Rev matching off.
I'd rather do it myself too but it did work very well if you are feeling lazy :-)
