Sidney calling Billy a pansy-assed momma’s boy right after he just finished explaining to her how he killed her mother bc of his own abandoning him is probably the greatest read in all of horror history lol
BOOM. Roasted 🤣
I will never get over how good Scream is, like it has no right being as clever as it is
Edit: lol I just wanna pop in and say thank u for all the likes I definitely didn’t expect this to turn into a 5 month long debate but hey have at it yall 👌🏼
clever is...an overstating what it is, aware of itself definitely.
The deconstruction aspects of the film are interesting, but then the film follows those methods for the most part,
Sidney/neve campbell are the best casted choice for the heroine.
but It’s really not that clever even from a deconstruction perspective since the formula is write everyone to be the suspect and acting suspicious therefore no one can figure out whose the real killer(s) until you reveal it
which i felt got kind of cheap since it takes the fun out of trying to figure out who’s guilty on your own.
@@mckenzie.latham91 I mean get you but even taking out the deconstruction of the genre I think it’s just a well written film in general the dialogue is pretty snappy and where there are references to the horror genre I think they’re well placed and respectful of the genre
@@mckenzie.latham91 The film referencing the tropes while adhering to them in a fashion is part of why I think it's clever...
Such a snappy good time! I need to get my horror knowledge up so I can truly appreciate all the references when I rewatch it!
@@mckenzie.latham91 you miss the whole point on why it's clever 💀💀
I love Tatum's dialogue in her death scene. "Don’t kill me, Mr. Ghostface. I wanna be in the sequel!" 😆
Ghostface be like - yeeeeeah about that sorry you didn't make the final cut girl .
I also wanted her to be in the sequel :(
@@halfdraco7765 yes!!!!
@@kal.wofcrazy3282 She fought back against him with courage and great tactic.
She deserved to live to be honest, but the plot required her to die for some reason.
The actress actually was able to easily go out through that dog door and he had to fake the struggle. I believe this was a bad writing idea to kill her off but overall the movie was great.
Fun movie fact! They marketed Drew Barrymore as the lead of Scream and she was a pretty big star at the time whereas the rest of the cast wasn’t as well known so when her character dies in the first scene of the film it completely shocked people. It just shows that even the rollout of the film was super clever too!
Yep! Similar to what “Psycho” did when the “lead star” was murdered.
Didn't they have to rewrite the movie to have her die at the start because it turned out she was only available for a short time?
@@rowdycmoore no, they just gave her the casey becker part. originally drew was going to play sidney. It was her idea to switch parts so that she could still be involved and shock audiences
@@jaridmarcel FWIW I've heard multiple takes - some saying it was the lack of availability, and others saying it was Drew's request to play Casey because she knew what impact it would have on the movie.
@@rowdycmooreI’ve watched Drew say herself that she wanted to be the opening kill
Both Matthew Lillard and Skeet Ulrich are absolutely perfect in this movie. Pure genius.
They should be in more films they're underrated personally imo
Are you sure? Skeet Ulrich is wooden as fuck and that mong Lillard spends half of the film pathetically sticking his tongue out for no reason whatsoever..
Stu always terrifies me more than Billy. We know Billy is psychotic and on the edge but Stu was the comic relief and when he is torturing and killing he enjoys he has fun and makes faces and to me that is so haunting for someone to be doing that and enjoy it as if it was a fun game. Stu also said when put on the spot his reason for doing it was peer pressure. It can be assumed he killed because it was fun and he liked it same as Mickey
Agreed. Masterful acting
@@rnw2739 and you're dull shut up this movie was boss and all the actors were perfect
Fun facts: Wes Craven was the janitor in the Freddie outfit. And they had to film the garage door scene multiple times because Rose could easily fit through the doggie door.
Even more so when you realize his character is named Fred.
*Freddy. Learn to spell!

Fun fact: Drew didn't want to hear the voice before filming so she could have a genuine reaction. Also the part where Billy hits Stu with the phone was actually an accident. The line about his mom and dad being mad was improvised.
That line was hilarious
@@gorgeously.a9454 agreed.
The film was inspired by a real-life serial killer known as the Gainesville Ripper. Courteney Cox was desperate to play a character who was a ‘bitch’.

Justice for Kenny! His final words/gesture was “back door”, letting her know the way out of the van because the killer was blocking the main door.
For real. Always felt bad for Kenny. He seemed so nice.
I thought he said Lock the door...
At least he wasn't dumb like casey 😡she set her house on fire
@@MeowowMe hell I would have set Ghostface on fire with that popcorn thingy...better than a knife. That costume would have gone up like WHOOSH
@@MeowowMe Don't say stupid things.
Every time Stu answers "peer pressure" as his motive, my instinct is to roll my eyes. But then when he starts crying because his parents are going to be mad him all i can think is "yeah, that actually tracks."
What's wrong with his motive? The point of the scene is that it's funny that that's his motive.
@@scottchaison1001 nothing wrong with it! I mean, peer pressure is a silly excuse for anything, but given that two seconds later he’s crying over upsetting his mom and dad, it would actually be a plausible on for him. All the defense would need is a good psychiatrist and he’d like spend the rest of his life in a mentalfacility instead of a prison - if he had lived.
@@allura9163 I’ve always gotten the idea that Stu really is an impressionable idiot, he’s a young dumb jock who’s convinced by a sociopath like Billy to go along with this halfassed murder streak.
@@thedeepfriar745 idk that sounds a bit too boiled down, I like the nuanced interpretation that the other comment points towards
I think peer pressure was just going to be his excuse when the police came. They both killed for sick kicks and Maureen was the only one Billy had a motive for killing.
Kenny did save Sydney with a final act! He pointed to the small hole in the back of the van for her to escape through while bleeding through his neck and no one ever notices that 😭
@Logia SD Its understandable cause most Scream characters come off as archetypes on the surface but the more you watch the more you see they're so much more. On your first watch you'll probably just think Kenny's a doofus. He has so many great lines & moments but they're very low-key

I LOVE that you compared Billy coming through the window to Johnny Depp because the actor was casted due to his resemblance to Johnny. Wes wanted us to believe the boyfriend was innocent looking so that we wouldn't suspect him.
Or... that he would be *too* obvious, so the audience wouldn't believe it was him.

The finale with Stu and Billy explaining the motives to Sidney is always my favorite! I love seeing how they’re both psychotic, where one is more manic and unhinged, but the other is cold and calculated. Such a great dynamic that we don’t see often in horror! And the music when they start stabbing each other just makes me tense up!

Kenny did save her! He pointed to her where the back door was in the van!
Thank you I was just coming to say that. He absolutely saved her in his final act
oh my god that's beautiful! I was too distracted by her getting stabbed before she could close the door and I thought he was just reaching out as he fell. 😭
Yeah, Kenny is a really sad death the more you watch the movie. Kenny was really a good person who wanted to discover the killer and stop the bloodshed, unlike Gale who (while she most likely wanted the murderer to be caught to stop killings as well) was much more motivated by the fame and money that would come with it. He was going to run back into a house with a killer to save a kid he didn't know, and then in his final moments he possibly saved Sidney's life by pointing to the exit. Kenny was a good due and he didn't deserve shit from Gale lol
I’m thinking in his late final mins why Kenny not grab the killer,s mask off at least... instead good reaction none the less!
"Billy, go home and wash your hair."
Love this.
Her: “Yes! Rose is my grrrl!”
Also her: Zero emotion when she dies horrifically.

It was the last bite too!
I could have just died and my final meal would have been a microwavable burrito.
This is where Courtney Cox met her husband David Arquette, in one of the more unlikely couplings ever.
Nice choice! Can we appreciate the twist, though? Everything told us Billy was the killer. He was creepy. He had opportunity. But Wes Craven is an old pro at horror, so why would he make it obvious? And then he gets stabbed and we question everything we've seen and then it turns out there are TWO killers! Love this!
@@cuylshepherdton7437 sadly, Kevin Williamson doesn't get enough credit for this franchise. It's HIS creation. 😔
@MyRandomology
Like the other two commenters have said, Wes didn't write it, dumbass. Kevin Williamson did, dumbass. WRITERS dictate ehat happens in a movie, not the director, idiot. A Director just directs.

What You Did Last Summer! and Wes is def one of my fave horror directors (I know I'm still building the repertoire but so far he is a GEM)! Nightmare has me by the heart strings 😂
@@MrParkerman6 Actually, the director is far more responsible for the creative direction of the movie than the writer.
For example, Kevin Williamson stated that Stu was the one who killed Casey, but Wes Craven set up numerous clues throughout the film that it was actually Billy. It was a situation of the director having his own interpretation of the script and taking creative control.
"Great. He's seen your wig." I just spit out my drink.
I just noticed Stu gave himself away when he said Randy killed Billy. If the audience was paying attention Randy was on the couch while Stu was going around chasing Sidney and stabbing Dewey, and killing the cameraman.

It's also important to remember, while this movie has a lot of modern horror tropes in it, this movie was the first of its kind. It's easy for me to roll my eyes at a few moments, but it's important to keep it within the context of its time. There was no other movie like this. It arguably saved horror in the 90's and spawned a few imitations that never did quite as well as Scream did. Lightning in a bottle.
Dope, another Wes Craven classic. On his birthday no less.
It's a KEVIN Williamson classic, not Wes classic, dumbass. Kevin wrote the shit. Wes just directed. Writing is way more important than who the director is.
@@MrParkerman6 uhhhh, no, "dumbass". You can have a great script, but the Director is the one who brings it to life. There have been many movies with great stories, but failed due to horrible direction and execution. The Director is responsible for EVERYTHING (directs how actors portray their characters, show their expressions, and say their lines, responsible for the tone of the movie, pacing, music, budget, sets, etc.) therefor, the DIRECTOR is the most important person!

I remember this movie was huge back in the day and a good part of that success had to do with the collective shock watching Drew Barrymore and thinking she was the star of the movie and then (spoiler alert) the opening scene was actually her character getting killed, genius marketing move lol. The Director was very careful about leaking any info about the plot of the movie before the release. This is definitely a 90's classic.

Crazy scary fact about my childhood. So scream came out in 96’ when I was 1 going on 2 years old that year. And my moms boyfriend and the dad of both of my sisters was OBSESSED with this movie. Oh and he was crazy, like as fuck. And violent. I witnessed a lot of shit as a kid that I shouldn’t have. But my mom told me recently that one time he confessed to her years later that him and his bestfriend (who is now in jail for over a decade for a violent crime…) planned out a whole “scream” real life reenactment that they were going to pull on my mom and her bestfriend if she ever cheated on him. He said at one point he was so excited about it that he set her up to cheat on him and she didn’t …. Like INSANE!! He was always so mean to me too, and my mom lived with me and my grandma awhile after they broke up. Had they done that I have no doubt that he would have murdered me and my grandmother too. And I was just old enough to start having memories. Cause I was like 6 when he was planning to do that because my youngest sister had been born already. What a psycho. He’s married now and has like 7 kids all from different women. And another crazy fact is that I used to have a nightmare of me and mg mom getting attacked by ghost face. Granted the movie terrified me and was the first horror film I ever saw but I think I was having that dream because it was gonna happen. Thank the lord in heaven my moms not a cheater 😭 that literally saved our lives…
