Done traditional makiwara for about 30 years. Great for hands, fists, arms and feet - however from my experience avoid the tip of the elbow strike on the makiwara. The nerves for the hands seem to run too close to the surface of the elbow and I certainly have done damage to my elbows from this (and other trauma) No damage elsewhere only improved focus and conditioning when built up gradually and consistently.
I'm reminded of the Chief Grand Master in my style saying that if something's bothering you, pound the makiwara for a while, and you'll forget anything else that's bothering you.
I made my own makiwara and I’m sure imma mess myself up. But practice makes perfect. Hence why I’m watching videos like these. I don’t think I’ll hit as hard as he is. Baby steps
Thank you, Jesse, for sharing your videos, knowledge, insights and journey through life with us. At fist, before even seeing a single video of yours, I was VERY prejudiced and skeptical. But I picked up your rooted humility, honesty and lack of pretense - traits that are crucial for every Karate practitioner. I must also admit that witnessing a life fully dedicated to martial arts is very inspiring and I bet it puts many of us viewers, for whom Karate is only a second fiddle to our daytime job, in a dreamlike state... I hope life treats you kindly for you deserve it.
Thanks Jesse for the tips as my DOJO here in the state does not have Makiwara, but I have one at home for extended training and this video will be very helpfull.
I used the makiwara all of my training and taught my students how to make one and use it at home, also I added other parts to the training I did and even taught the use of the mind combined with the body to form a shield and practiced the strikes first lightly then working into hard strikes thus making the body a weapon that works better in the streets and worked on striking smaller targets thus making the points of the body easier to attack. Note that it is necessary to learn how to use them so it becomes effective and even makes it harder to identify exactly what you are doing, but is very effective in the streets as some of my students who have had to use it have seen, and when a fight has to happen it is over quickly.
Today I just made my own makiwara .... and thank you for these exercises now I can pratice this and actually be good at my punching & striking.I learn teakwondo but I realized I need to work on my punches. Sensei I need some suggestions from you. How can I be good at punching ? just to let you know I am taking some online lessons from master wong (wing chun). and please tell me for how long and how many days I should train 🙏🙏🙏
Hi Jesse l follow you for a long time and l amazed your karate knowledge. l thinks you are great young karate master and l woud like to know your karate syle.
Practiced with the makiwara yesterday. Never really been too good at it. I can hit it just fine, but it doesn’t seem to move much, which must mean I’m not penetrating. It’s probably just something I have to figure out about it. I’ll just have to improve.
All of your videos are so very well done and valuable. If I may, I have two questions: is there any advantage of practicing using this vs a heavy bag, and how do you keep from injuring your hands if the goal is not to toughen up your hands? Thank you again for sharing.
Sarebbe bello se facessi dei video con sottotitoli in italiano. Un saluto. Can you inserd subtitle in italian lenguage?? Good jab, i follow you from Italy, i think that you are a very good Sensei.
To be honest I wish I could head to get my karate more seriously I'll try to practice that type of meats in that type of tool when I get something like that on eBay or online I'm when I'm practicing on my kicks punches in these strikes living traditional karate is not half bad is actually pretty cool when you're learning something like this 🥋☯️🙏😌🙏☯️🥋
Makiwara is a very useful exercise to strengthen the hands Hitting the goal helps to develop speed, strength, and precision in defense art Makiwara is part of the traditional karate complementary training called Hojo undo Makiwara is a simple and easy tool and you can make it at home and train it daily for a quarter of a half hours to make your hands steel But what is important here is that you need to train it correctly or otherwise it has a loss Especially those students who started
I love all your videos. Ive learned a lot. I appreciate your humbleness and willingness to share. I have a question. I've never seen Karateka using Dit Dat Jow (hit medicine) even though karate has roots in China. Why is this? Do they use some other type of liniment in Okinawa (the birth place of Karate 😁). The closest I've heard was Uechi Kanbun medicine, but it was taken orally for bruising and recovery not topically like jow.
Thanks for this video, grandmaster. Over 21 years ago, I was reading a little book about "Arte y Práctica del Karate" (Art and Prantice of Karate, if I translate it into English), and there say something about the makiwara, say about is used to improve the impacts of the hits, and recommend to hit the makiwara imagining your punch or kick will shatter it into pieces...
thanks for the video ... what kind of wood is recommended to make the makiwara? ... what measures? ... could you make a tutorial to make a makiwara correctly? thank you
No way to know if you still read your imput? I would have liked to see the base to make my own. Also tall man as you are seems this strike zone would be higher esp since you appear to be at least 6" I enjoyed the video. From Kentucky USA
How is Makiwara board on wrist and knuckle joints? Compared to a heavy bag, will the Makiwara board toughen the wrist and knuckle joints better and sooner than the heavy bag? Can I train on the Makiwara board every day?
The makiwara offers a different type feedback than a heavy bag does. You can fool yourself into thinking you are a hard puncher with a heavy bag, when actually your punches are more pushes than strikes. With a makiwara, punches have to be snappy to provide the proper feedback. Plus with a makiwara being a flat surface, there is no need to tape your hands to protect your wrists from sprains.
Hi Jesse. Very nice and useful video (as usual). Just one question, are there any specific aspects to take in consideration if you start conditioning your body for martial arts at 30?
Thanx for the break down, but why is the Makiwara so low can it be higher, why, why not and are there variations like that one used by Segal in that Mark for death is it?
Why couldn't you? Just bury a 2x4 weighted with some concrete deep in your back yard and wrap the top with rope. Or, buy a slotted one; you can pound on it while it's laying on the floor, also.
Such an interesting tool. How is the bottom of the Makiwara constructed and is it fixed to the floor at all? It's something I'd like to give a go on, but I'm not sure about where I could put one. lol
infinite number of tubes about that ,need to do some researchs and see, pretty easy to install one in your own yard ,i intend to install diffrents one in the woods .
I cant seem to find any decent videos on making a makiwara board. Could you do a video on what you would suggest for a beginner board, an intermediate board and a standard board
İ am able to doing Chi ishi with 12,5 kg with each hand(one hand 12,5 other hand 12,5 kg i am able to stay with there in arm straight position). is it effect makiwara strength?
Oss sensei. Sensei I practice makiwara sometimes. But my parents and others often say that it will coz me problem when I grow old. Is it true sensei? I'm confused. Pls help. Oss sensei.
Jesse love your videos, is there a way I could message you about a karate concern I'm having? I sent a message to your main site but I'm not sure if it sent or not.
Smooth Play There's plenty of designs out there for makiwara boards and alternative thereof. Some people use shot bags on a tree, as a conditioner, and I've seen a few who actually use sawed off power poles, wrapped in rope. I use a bucket of sand for training knuckles and spearhand, and I have a training block made from a concrete block and wood shims, wrapped in a couple layers of rope. Lots of options, just do a little research.
Thanks for your excellent videos, Sensei Jesse! Could you make a video on how to make a makiwara at home? How do you determine the proper height of the makiwara?
I love conditioning my hands but I advise anyone who's doing conditioning to use the Dit Da Jow. I don't care what style you're doing you need to use the medicine regardless of what part of the body you're conditioning.
Jay moh Many people have said the makiwara is bad for bones and joints and there are some examples of old masters with awful hands. However they all seem to be related to bad practices actually. There are also examples of old masters with perfectly healthy hands. Some studies suggest that certain levels of impact could be in fact good for thickening the bones, but it's not been fully proven yet. Makiwara definitely depends on having learned the proper concepts to start in makiwara. There are still many people using it the wrong way. With some research is easy to find the difference. I would recommend you to take a look at Goju Ryu or Uechi Ryu examples first, maybe Shoryn Ryu too, because in other schools opinions and practices may vary, while those schools are amongst the most loyal to the original Okinawa techniques.
Jay moh It is also recommended starting by just pushing the makiwara with no real impact at the beginning. Then progressively you add impact increasing the distance, intensity and speed at feel. Another advice is begin with a not very stiff makiwara. The stiffest are for advanced training.
Just remember to always balance your energy afterwards by doing some deep breathing meditation or calligraphy painting. Makiwara training produces a lot of Fire (Ka) Energy and can make you very aggressive and explosive if your energy is not balanced properly afterwards. Goes back to the concept of In/Yo aka Yin/Yang.
Jesse you can watch my kancho's performance in my channel my kancho was able to throw 60+60 kg halter(ude tanren or tan training) but in my channel video 40+40 kg please watch. our kancho died this year.
The only guy online that actually pronounces Makiwara properly. Much respect!

I'm reminded of the Chief Grand Master in my style saying that if something's bothering you, pound the makiwara for a while, and you'll forget anything else that's bothering you.
must be human nature, in boxing they have the same saying about the heavy bag

Just learned about this thing. Im glad you covered it.
This instrument (makiwara) is so amazing .....thnxx.....😍💜
I will have to try the uraken/kagi-tsuki one tonight, I have never seen that before! Thanks for the nice video, Jesse!
Great information Jesse. Thank you for preserving the art of Karate.

Osu!, this exercises are extreme effective! 🙏🏻
love my homemade makiwara, it's become my favorite training tool.
Tak!
Tack!! 🙏
Nice training section
You make it look so easy sensei!
Thank you Sensei
It will make your punches a lot harder and it will condition your fists. 👊🏽
@AyushBtw6000 yes over time the knuckles will harden and become bigger and stronger but keep in mind this process takes years of training
I always learn something new from your videos. thanks again!!
Melissa La Cour Thank you Melissa-san! 🙏

😁I made one yesterday day to start getting really old school traditional in my training

How is Makiwara board on wrist and knuckle joints?
Compared to a heavy bag, will the Makiwara board toughen the wrist and knuckle joints better and sooner than the heavy bag?
Can I train on the Makiwara board every day?
The backfist/hook punch combo looks like what Shimabukuro Sensei does.
Where is best place can I buy the stand please? @Karatebyjesse
thanks

@Jesse Enkamp Sensei, what do you think about the wall mounted makiwara (that one with a spring)? Is it safe to use? Greetings from Brazil! 🇧🇷🥋
I like it!
@@KARATEbyJesse I will get one then! 😀 Thank you very much Sensei!

How many times a week should I practice makiwara? Thank you, sensei.
I wish I can have one

Alvin Almendarez you can just take a piece of wood wichh is rectangular shaped like the one in the video and wrap a rope tightly around it 😇
do one around a tree, even a hobo could have a makiwara ,DO IT NOW !
are they're anymore exercises you can do with a makiwara

Would this kind of conditioning lead to joint pain later in life? It seems like it would be good in short term, but not much in the long term.
