its expensive to watch these kind of videos
Yea, was thinking the same thing. Started to add up what he had, and came to around $30,000 for all the gear. Sponsorship definitely has it's perks!!
I go skiing and climbing and the amount of money I have spent in this 2 hobbies is brutal lol especially skiing
@@Chrissli3 yeah my buddy and I were on a ski tour a few years ago (before I upgraded/updated a bunch of kit) and decided to try and do a rough total of how much the gear with us cost, and it came out to about 6-7 grand (USD) per person. Haha. The wallet might hurt but the spirit is free!
@d darko We are talking about what he was showing in the video, not a pair of walmart ski, and paper-mache boots.
@d darko To be fair, most people don't even have skis or boots. Or poles. Or any ski and snow gear actually.
Hell, if you want to be decently comfortable in your clothing and insulation, you need to spend a pretty big chunk of cash.
What about your sandals? Whole video and you didn’t talk about them.
Birkenstock
Martin Müller haha, yeah. The beach ones
The best skiing channel out there for sure! Love it
Mediocre amateurs might be a channel you really love
Avalanche training is far most the best gear you recommended (and than maybe everything norrona). Thankful guys like you promote safe practice of this sport. I think it's not promoted enough :)
Couldn't agree more!
best backcountry ski gear video ever made--incredibly detailed. great job.
the production quality of this video is incredibly high. Bravo!
The quality of all your videos is so amazing!!!!! I’m sure you’ll blow up huge soon on RUclips
Thanks a lot for the video. Im trying to get more into freeriding and im trying to decide what gear to buy and what to look for and it helped a lot!
The amount of subscribers to the amount of effort and quality of video is not fair. Hands down the best channel for skiing.
Awesome video Nikolai, way to get someone stoked. Really all your videos are stoke fuel!
Oh thats a nice suggestion and example. That may be the most durable gadgets for skiing. Thanks for sharing.
AWESOME video !! Lots ofinformations, plenty of detailed and true thoughts on the gear ! Thank you ! Keep doing what you do the best !!
Glad it was helpful!
You and @jacobwester are the pioneers of the freeride vlogging type of videos and I love them! Keep up the great work and keep us updated with your travels.
Thanks! Will do
Ive waitet so long for this video 😍
You are absolutely epic with your skiing! It shows that you love what you do and you seem to be very in tune with what will work on a mountain and what won’t. Much love! Stay safe!!
Thank you! Will do!
So good, your channel is back active again! With your videos and the impressive pictures I bridged last winter where I couldn't go skiing. Off topic, but: I love the music you use from Neon Apartments. Great Stuff.
Thanks! Yeah Neon Apartments is awesome
thank you again for a chill no "cool" music video. Grate! Iv almost lost my interest for skiing vids because they are often to much, but your slowly getting me back into wanting to see some more videos again. Hope your humble style rubs off on other film makers out there.
Thank you Jörund
just subbed, best mixture of awesome clips when ur talking about the skis. music on point. can’t fault the vid :)
Thanks!
Man, you are such an incredible skier and these videos are awesome! Confident that you will be getting a lot more subscribers in the next few years. If you are ever back in BC let me know!
Thanks!! Will do
I ski the hoji free 130 as well, and despite the 102-narrower last I have to say it somehow magically fits my super wide feet like a glove, so if anyone with wide feet is thinking about getting them, try them on!
ur 3/4 down pants are so cool! it doesn't really get that cold where i live (SE BC) so i generally only wear tights and my shellsuit and im happy with that but dang i kinda want those. nice ad!
Thanks from NZ for your great, informative video
Glad it helped:)
Thank you so much Nikolai☺️
Thanks for the video! I am planning on transiting towards the backcountry skiing this season and was really trying to figure the gear. I guess if it holds well for your style of skiing, there should be no problem for a beginner for at least several years.
Have fun out there! And be safe :-)
Thank you for all this valuable info, especially the bindings parts. I am surprised that you shred the pin bindings so hard and do not snap when you land a big air. Also love your videos and generally your approach to the the whole game.
Thanks Camilo!
Great videos, keep up the good work!
Thanks!
This was awesome. Thank you
First video of yours I watched... *proceeds to watch every video on your channel*
Excellent content! Thank you :)
These videos are amazing
already watched it. Great Video
Excellent vid. I actually bought some Navis Freebirds with G3 Ion 10's, in part on your recommendation. The skis are spectacular, ridiculously killer in all condies. The bindings I'm less hot on; they released on me in an icy couloir last Tuesday. Prefer Dynafits from my old skis.
Ski hard, cut carbon!
Bummer they fell off! I lock mine if it’s very icy. Glad the skis work🤘
beatiful new color green wood !
Could you please make a video about repelling and the gear you use for that and mountaineering in general? Would be awesome! Love your videos!!!
The Corvus Freebird is the best ski ever! I have it as my only pair and ride everything from resort to deep powder, airs (No spins, did 1 360 last year), corn, and steep scary AF variable snow jumpturns. They aren't the lightest but charge through variable snow and avy debris much better than my friends' lighter skis so I think it is worth it. Only downside is they have a thin base so you will inevitably coreshot the bright pink base and be sad. Overall 10/10 would recommend
Totally agree!
Hi Nikolai, as I have a shed load (well a few) Icebreaker merino base layers so I have't added to my extensive Norrona wardrobe with their merino baselayers. What I have found useful is from another Norwegian company Brynje's mesh baselayers. I have the wool ones for holiday when washing them isn't convenient and the superthermo vest for winter biking here in England. I use these under the normal merino baselayers and find that they help to prevent that clammy feeling when merino gets damp.
Thanks for the tip! My buddy’s all aboit the mesh too. Maybe I’ll try it out
Could you do a pack haul? How do you pack everything? What do you take with you in a backpack and what do you leave behind in a, say, chalet?
Thx for the great content!! I was wondering for quite long about the crampons you are using? In a way a mix of crampons and snow shoes… 🤷🏻♂️ Hope you‘re doing well and keep up the high quality!! Best reg D
Thanks! They’re called: auftriib.com
Hey Nikolai, assuming ur pack isn’t RAS? Any reason you don’t use it? Thanks for sharing your gear and the regular vids 🙌🏼
Hi, love that peacefully actitude and all your lines on that beatiful natural enviroment, thanks for sharing all these vids. Do you use any back protection ? Anything about communication ( walkies t.), Sat , or location electronics (GPS...)?
Anyway,fckng good skiing.
We need more videos!
Great video, great info. Love black crows and norrona :). Atris is my favorite ski- I have them with a shift binding to use for resort and backcountry. Also have the camox freebird with a light touring setup. Thinking so hard about the Animas! Have you used the marker alpinist 12 binding? If so, how do they compare to the G3s?
cool video. need a shell bib with a full zip leg, take on and off without removing ski boots, uphill usually in tights only, put shell on when getting near top of mountain
It's not a bib, but I just did a shoot with these ones and they're just what you need. Lightweight, packable and full zip so you can put them on with ski boots: www.norrona.com/en-GB/products/lyngen/lyngen-gore-tex-paclite-ski-overpants-mens/?color=7720
Hey Nikolai, Amazing content as always, Have you ever been to Gulmarg? one of the highest Ski resort in world. Consider coming here 👍
Tx for sharing
Such an informative video! I'm looking to get my first backcountry setup this winter- do you have any recommendations for frame bindings?
Hey Nikolai, try out the Arc Teryx Atom Hoodie and you will never wear another fleece again. PLUS, it's miles away a superior product for getting the job done. I didn't believe it until I made the switch.
you scared the shit out of me, i was doing something else, and i suddenly heard my name out of my speakers, you gave me a heart attack xD
Great video!! Would love to see a video on your filming setup and how you achieve the shots you do. How do you use the drone and positions the gopros etc...
Thanks for the idea!
@@Nikolai_Schirmer yes I'm curious about this too! Please do it 🙂
@@Nikolai_Schirmer I agree I'd love to see a video talking about your filming process. I'm especially curious about filming yourself with a drone
Have you tried the Tecton 12 binding? It is similar weight as Ions, but it has a traditional alpine heel and more elasticity in the toe. I would love to hear your thoughts if you've skied them. Love your gear video!!
Hi Nikolai,
Any chance you'll be traveling this winter? I have a GREAT idea I would like to share with you. I'll be in the U.S. this winter. A cup of coffee and conversation could change our and many others lives.
Thank you for all the inspiration and you continual kindness in your films.
Hi, thanks for the video with a lot of details! Question: do you think that Anima really need this amount of camber it has? Or it would be better to have less camber (like in Volkl Confession or Rustler 11) for that kind of skis?
One more question: what walkie-talkie do you use?
Hey Niko! Awesome vid as always. Whats the shift binding in the Back. What conditions do You use it for?
Hey Niko!
Really interesting seeing you talk about all the gear you have. I am curious if you have had the chance to try out the Black Crows Ferox Freebird ski, and in that case what you think about them (maybe compared to your Atris).
Cheers!¨
Edit: Saw that you already commented on them further down, thanks for taking your time and interacting with your audience! =)
Super video informational video, you learned me more new stuff about skins/clothing/skis/bindings than I've learned in ages! love that you talk about mount points and a lot of stuff that nobody seems to talk about. I just got the atris in 189 and was wondering where to put the bindings as I do like the more forward mounting so +2 it is. Any suggestions for camox mount points as well? And do you use any sort of quiverkillers/bindingfreedom inserts so you can move bindings around? Alltid god stemning når du legger ut video og høy kvalitet! :)
Sweet! Yes, so the reason the atris rides well that far forward is because the recommended one is -8cm from true centre, whereas the anima and lots of the other skis are -6cm. I like the camox at recommended. Just rode them there on Saturday. Feels good both switch and going forwards🤘 takk!
@@Nikolai_Schirmer Thanks! Have you tried the new Justis? how how you say it fits between the atris/camox? ? have not seen any info from black crows, but blister says its suggested mounted at 7.5? guessing bumping that to 6 would also work?
@@pewpewpew8390 I haven't tried the Justis to be honest, but I think they look sick! My general impression is that Julien Regnier (who draws up all these) and Kenji (who does the engineering bit) really know what they're doing, and so far I haven't gotten a ski from them that doesn't perform. Julien does a good walkthrough of it here: ruclips.net/video/wRLuvWSK05Y/видео.html
If you're skiing more freeride/piste than park I would go for the justis
“Airs, backslaps”😂😂😂
thanks for the video! I just have one question: I am looking for spoilers for my skiboots, but can't really find any. Do you have any tipps where i should look and where i can buy? (I have lange T130 Boots)
I got mine from SOLE in Chamonix. If you go to a bootfitter they should have a few laying around :-)
Would love to hear your thoughts on the new Anima when you try it and how it compares with the Atris!
Will update you!
I am curious about your feelings of having such a short probe. I am in the Canadian Rockies, and there has been a few burials over the last few years that were at least 3m deep. Its become common practice here to have a minimum of a 3m probe.
hei!great video! what is your battery management with go pro and the drone on a trip?:)
Hi Nikolai, thank you for doing this video!
One question ; since you’re using the Dynafit Hoji Free as your do-it-all boot, which Alpine binding will you end up using with the Hoji Free? Or do you have a dedicated Alpine ski boot?
Can’t wait for your next video!!
All the best
Hi there,
I’ve been using the salomon sth16 with the hoji boot :)
Thanks!
Great content mate! Gotta admit though, as a skier and biker enthusiast, O was really hoping you'd review your mountain bike!! What you riding!?
Nice video! Do you use an avalanche airbag?
Hei Nikolai, thanks a lot for all these beautiful, entertaining and terrifying videos! I've been wondering which brand the small approach snow shoes/plates you are using are. Are these available somewhere in Norway?
Thanks!
They’re these ones: auftriib.com
Hey Nico, great video as always! :)
I get that you're sponsored by G3, but I'm curious about the G3 Ion 12 vs Salomon/Armada/Atomic SHIFT 12. So from one Scandinavian to another - Besides the 2 x 250 G weight saving, are there any advantages to the G3, or is the weight the main reason to chose the G3 over the SHIFT when going for a DH oriented touring setup?
Heyhey,
Ease of use is the other factor you should consider. With the G3 you can go from walk to ski mode in a few seconds without taking your skis off. There’s a bit more hassle with the shift. Other than that they’re pretty much the same! If I were skiing the ski in the resort more I would prefer the shift/duke
@@Nikolai_Schirmer Great. Thanks :)
Loved the video! How do you shoot with your drone, is it on follow mode some sort of follow mode or is someone always controlling it?
Thanks Danny! Always someone controlling. Either a dedicated pilot, or me and another rider with two controllers
Love Norrona
Do you bring anything for snow study (snow saw, magnifying lens, etc.)? And what do you bring for first aid?
I bring painkillers and stuff to patch up wounds. Tape. I don't really bring any of the snow study stuff, I feel like that's more if you're doing forecasting or research. But a nice snow saw would be nice actually. Now I just use my shovel and poles, sometimes a cord, to isolate columns
What mic's do you use to record such quality sound in the mountains?
Hey, I have notised that you often ride the combo of yellow jacket and green pants. Is this the Lofoten Goretex pro series?
I’m looking for a combo that can rock both the resort and the backcountry here in Tromsø, but struggle to choose between the different series. I’ve been looking at both the pro and the pro light of lofoten, but also having an eye up for the Lyngen series.
What would you choose if you only could have one set?
Love your videos by the way! Big inspiration.
Thats exactly what I'm still tryna figure out! Lasr year he answered my question in one of his instagram stories. So last year he was using the regular Lofoten shell (yellow) and all the other layers were the same as explained in this video.
Heyhey, yes, I should’ve done a «the does it all outfit» that is the lofoten pro. Best of both worlds, as our girl Hanna Montana would say
Yo! First of all, LOVE your videos. So incredibly inspiring. Secondly, I see you got the regular Camox back there on the left side in the shot. Any thoughts on these? How do they compare to the Atris and the Camox freebird?
Thanks!
The camox is pretty sick actually. Had it in chamonix one winter, and took it out a few days that were unexpectedly deep, and they performed really well. It’s also a more fun ski than the atris when the snow is firm. Compared to the freebird they’re way more solid. You can charge on them. Which makes them a bit heavier of course
@@Nikolai_Schirmer Thanks a lot for replying! And great news to hear about the Camox, I just put in an order on them :) Hit me up if you ever need an additional drone pilot/touring buddy!
@@vardis95 epic! Will do👊😃
Hey Niko!
What's the name of the song that's playing in the short ski clips throughout the video?
Also, any chance you could put the name of a songs you use in your videos in the caption? I recognize about half of them, but am interested in the other ones. Cheers man!
It's by my buddy Lars: soundcloud.com/mosjonist
FINALLY, the video we have all been waiting for lol ive always been trying out different combos and stuff but this takes the cake thanks #NikolaiSchirmer
I’m curious why you’d do the Freebird shorter. Examining my tour setup and many advising I go longer (head height vs eye height).
Jut because it’s the same length as my atris pretty much, so emphasize the lightness and nimbleness of the freebird setup. If you’re only doing one ski it’s usually good to go longer
Do you pack anything to help you get back to the trailhead in case of equipment failure? I've always wondered what I would do if I broke a binding or something in the backcountry, far from my car but haven't found a good solution.
Do you pack any other emergency prep gear, besides the avy stuff?
Duct tape! Have had heinous hikes on one ski through deep pow back in the days of frame touring bindings (those things broke all the time). Only once had a tech toe do that
What's your take on airbag backpacks?
Nice video, very indepth for the amount of gear you show!
After getting touring/freeride skis last season just two days ago got my avalanche gear. After years of renting for a few days and hiking with snowshoes and the snowboard on the back i finally managed to get myself that. I'm actually done with ski areas afterlast year when i had to cue 2hrs each on the 2 days of skiing i got.
How does your season probably look like this year? Especially since Norway, as far as i know, does have a travelban outside norway due to covid. Do you just do stuff in Lyngen, Lofoten and maybe Jontunheimen/Stavanger/Bergen area? Or are you planning on just staying in the alps for a season?
Hey Philip! Happy the video helped. I’m planning to just follow the snow around Norway this coming season. If I go abroad I’ll have to quarantine for 10 days when I return :) plus Norway’s awesome
@@Nikolai_Schirmer That sounds like a good plan...
Yes, Norway is awsome. Had the pleasure to study in Trondheim for a semester in autumn 2017. But sadly never managed to get back there since then. Maybe should look at masters-programms in Norway to make 2 more years there...
Hi Nikolai I would want to know in this video , how did you took off your ski in the last videos when the snow was icey ? Thanks for the amazing videos !!
Heyhey, so the trick is to grab the ski with the hand that you release the toe piece with. So thumb on your toe piece and fingers around the ski. Click the lever and voila, the ski is in your hand.
A bit harder if you’re not on a tech binding
So its dosen’t have nothing to do with the back side of the binding , the front side will release it .
Thank you very much for helping me !
What is your opinion on the Salomon shift
nice
Great video. Helped me so much. Could you please tell me what kind of backpack do you use for one day tours? How big should it be? How many litres? Thanks
Hi there, I use this one: www.norrona.com/nb-NO/produkter/lofoten/lofoten-30l-ryggsekk/?color=3301
It fits everything you need :)
@@Nikolai_Schirmer thank you so much!!!
pack with all of the gear, food, water, clothes, avi equip, repair, first aid but without skins. 4kg! speed is better than safety (meaning that it is safety)
Did u ever try a binding like the shift or is it just too heavy? And what other skies then black crow did u use before?
Never rode the shift myself, but it seems good! I just feel like weight doesn’t make sense for the kind of riding I’m doing. I’ve skied rossignol, volkl, armada, atomic, k2, skilogik and line
what brand do you recomend if you cant afforf norrörna
Dude, great vid! Ive a question regarding the binding: How hard can you trust the pins when sending it? Iam 198 with 100kg, using the anima for deep snow but with a frame binding and an older daemon188 with the atk free for touring, but iam afraid of bigger drops with a pin binding:). Any troubles with that recently?
Works well for me at 85kg! Not sure how another 15kg will impact it
@@Nikolai_Schirmer Btw: What DIN setting u r using? 85kg istn leightweight and u stomping some big drops!;)
@@supermaxe he uses 12 the max on his binding :)
What are the little minimal snowshoe things you use in firm steep snow? I think I heard you call them "verts" maybe?
Verts and auftriib :)
Hey Niko, if you’re still reading these comments… crampons on the Dynafits? Would you do, say, WI3 in them? Thanks, inspiring stuff!
Thanks! I’ve used the petzl leopard, but using these now: www.proskiservice.com/products/tech-crampon-250
I think I disagree on the Atris vs Corvus. Even not going switch the Atris has a shorter turn radius and rocker in the tail which makes turn initiation easier and snapping quick turns is easier. The Corvus rails massive turns way better though
I just feel my net worth departing, every second of this video I watch. How many body parts did you have to sell to afford all of your gear? Left Kidney? Right Kidney? Both?
Sponsorships :)
what about the mountain bike in the back?
Yo Nikolai. Do you shave your legs to prevend discomfort, wich can be develop from the boots and socks pressure?
Heyhey my hair kinda naturally wears off crating bold patches on the pressure points
Hey Niko! Just 2 simple questions: What do you do to earn money? And Do you prefer skiing in Norway or skiing in Austria/Switzerland?
Hey there,
1: I ski and make videos (sponsor money and some commercial work)
2: I prefer Norway just because it’s home, and there are less people. The Alps on a pow day is epic though!
I see a pink label on the Douchebag, it's that the one from Norwegian Air they use for heavy bags and says: 'Heavy like a pregnant elephant?'
I was wondering how you think your bindings perform in bounds? Do they work just as well as traditional alpine bindings? Thank you for the help also love your videos keep it up this winter
heyhey, they definitely don't hold up as well as a regular alpine binding with a 16-18 din. I haven't skied a regular alpine binding with a din of 12, but I guess they would be comparable to that
@@Nikolai_Schirmer what's your take on the CAST bindings? Ever tried them?
Nikolai, great video. The Norrona Anorak you wear at the resort looks ideal, we're about the same height and weight. What size do you wear?
Nice, yeah it’s sweet. I wear it in Large
@@Nikolai_Schirmer I thought that he was going to ask for it when you cast it off!
Love your video.I saw you have in the back the black crows Navis. What are your thoughts on them? I've just got mine and didn't get the chance to ski them. Thanks.
roas ovidiu those are the camox actually.
Great ski! I use them to ski park :)
@@Nikolai_Schirmer yes. You are right. I got them mixed up. I bought the camox with a full frame touring bindings. I'm a beginner at touring. Hope that thei will perform well.
roas ovidiu fun all mountain ski too! Surprised me how versatile they are :) hope you have fun on them!
@@Nikolai_Schirmer thanks man!!!
Hey Nikolai,
I am a big fan of your vids! I probably watched every single one of them this summer while I waited for the ski season to arrive. I have a couple questions in regards to how you set up your GoPro. What mounts do you use most while filming? also, what GoPro specs do you run in POV while you are descending?
Thanks
Woho! Happy you enjoyed them.
I use the helmet mount mostly, and I also mount it to my pole for followcams.
The trick with the helmet mount is to get the camera as close to your eyes as possible without it interfering in your skiing, so I put it down far on my forehead (though still on the helmet of course). Makes for a better angle.
I use superview or 4:3 to get the widest possible FOV, and protune with low or medium sharpness (if the light is really flat). No stabilization. 50fps/2.7k for slomo action (airs/pow), 25fps/4k for everything else. Flat color because I color correct in post, but if you're not doing that I would go for gopro color.
:)
@@Nikolai_Schirmer awesome! thanks for the prompt and detailed reply
Why do you prefer to have no stabilization?
@@theomorton95 Makes you feel what the skier experiences better I find.
Hi, got two questions: how many g3 ion did you brake doing airs and tricks(and comparing to kingpins, which one do you like more)? and the second one, why you don't use airbag backpacs, thanks for the answers, youe videos are the best out there keep going!!!
Kingpin: two bindings in two seasons
ION: two bindings in three seasons
Wrote about the avy bags in a comment below :)
Thanks!!
@@Nikolai_Schirmer Thanks!! ;)
Does anyone know the music around the 10:45 mark? Cheers
