anyone that says I can ski black diamond to describe their level of skiing is usually a lower intermediate/beginner I'm sorry but that's just how it is
i hope to go skiing relatively soon (covid has kinda stopped me from going), i've never learnt any tricks and i've been skiing for a few years now--might finally take the step!
A quick tip from a former elite gymnast and trampoline jumper: if you’re looking to spin well, keep your arms tightly to your body! the further out your arms are, the harder it’ll be to rotate as it hinders you by creating a restistance in the air. you can practice this without skiis by jumping into the air and pulling your arms in, then doing it again with your arms wide out. it’ll give you a clear perspective of what i’m trying to explain. the same technique can also be used if you’re ever in danger or loosing control of yourself in the air. put your arms out to slow the speed of your spin, and regain balance. although i hope none of you actually get in the situation of loosing control, some will. it’s important to know exactly where your body is when in the air. practice makes perfect, stay safe guys!
You're probably correct about air resistance, but there's another physical phenomena. The angular momentum has to be preserved so the rotation speed is increased because the inertia decreases by pulling in your arms.
@@xWood4000 You’re completely right about that, and throwing your arms out won’t always save you from losing control. I should have been more clear about that. I’m glad you brought it up actually, because I find it all very interesting. However, I don’t know how flips are supposed to be done in this sport, so I didn’t want to say anything about it for that reason. When jumping trampoline you’re generally supposed to start rotating halfway through a jump. If we’re talking a simple front-flip or back-flip there’s two-ish steps for it: 1. Jump straight up 2. Tuck in and roll when you’re as high up as you’re going to get. The, almost same, applies for “around the shoulder” type of spins: 1. Jump straight up 2. Start rotation backward or forward a little earlier than max height 3. When upside-down, at max height, start rotation “over the shoulder”. This would obviously not work for a skier, as they’re usually not in the air for such a long time. So I didn’t want to say something out of line and potentially spread misinformation, if that makes sense?
@@orchiduh Stomp it has a tutorial on it, you start by learning on a trampoline, and then preferably when ready to an airbag/water landing (or self made jump in deep powder). I can't do flips but the pop seems to make the difference from normal flips, you sort of start the rotation there.
@@xWood4000 air resistance is minimal. Angular momentum also doesn't come into play until you are rotating. The reason it's harder is because of torque. When you arms are out, you need more torque to set off the rotation. Pulling your arms in will speed you up after you are in motion to conserve angular momentum as you said.
I’m 61 years old. Skied As a kid and in my 20’s...Just hit the slopes again after 40 years away...Jumping right in and trying all your tricks - fantastic! Thanks so much!!!
Patrick B. Ayyy I’ve never had a pair of actual twintip/free style /skis but I’ve been grinding on 180’s and skiing backwards :) Struggled with box slides on the side cause I thought I had to bend the skis to the side. Tell me how it goes on your progress, good luck buddy! ☃️🏆
@@tim197 You can check out the Fisher Ranger 94 fr. They're all mountain twin tips for about 300$ without bindings. I've been skiing on old k2 twin tips for the last 10 years and I'm going to buy these as my next skis for playing around in the park, off piste and still being able to do some nice carving with enough stability.
When you said it’s only a normal jump it clicked for me. The reason why we watch these youtubevideos is because we are too scared to do it and do we tell ourselfs we don’t know enough and procrastinate watching videos. This does not only apply in skiing, but to everything in life. He said it’s just a normal jump. I bet you can jump without even thinking about it. Now just jump with skis without even thinking about it. Done. Life is a numbers game. You are not going to do it perfect the first time so you have to ramp up the numbers of tries. i have been skiing for a while and "last time" i did a harder kind of trick i broke my arm and i haven't had the self-confidence to start making tricks on skis again. And i think i have found the self-confidence to start with the tricks again but now i am making sure i am doing them right.
Thank you so much for this tutorial! Pointing the tips downwards made everything look sooo much better, and the landing is so much smoother for my 43-year old joints. It's amazing what difference just one piece of advice can make. Thank you for that! Also, having the patience to wait for the highest point in the trajectory before doing the spreadie changed a lot for me. Finally, it feels perfectly right. I did not get much farther than to the spreadie so I can't comment on the other tricks but my boyfriend just did his first 180 and his first grab after watching your videos. Amazing!
Just came back from skiing and the trick you did in the first 5 seconds caused my biggest and only crash where I kneed myself in the chin and flipped 4 times. Can’t wait to get back and try it again with some more tips 👌
Mate, this is PEARL. Thank you so much!! I'm a former dancer/figure skater and have fond memories of showing my ski instructor brother how to.....rotate for his helicopter jumps. I was impressed by your intro explaining the correct way to rotate . It is so ortant to keep shoulders and arms square and in alignment whilst airborne, as dipping either way in the air, dictates the angle on which you land. I had the great pleasure of spending a whole day getting some air with uni ski pals years after showing my brother how to jump on land and I can honestly say it was one of the best days of my life.!!!! Keep up the great work which helps us older folk to get re-inspired to "get out there'. Kind regards from Oz. Emily.
Skied for 8 years growing up and learning then got stupid and switched to snowboard for 3 years. I’ve killed boarding and am getting back into skiing and with these videos I’ve gone from a ball of nerves to remembering everything I was taught and more. Your awesome dude thank you
I love skiing, I went once a year ago and I was alright, but my biggest problem became my greatest tool is the fact that no matter how underprepared or experienced I am I’d full send anything, this means I’ve broken a few bones in my time but with skiing I just have to eat some snow, can’t wait to go again after this pandemic just hope I’m able to go down a slope first
Been skiing park for about 10 years know and just curious to see what he said are the easiest tricks. Can confirm this is a good progression, really important to get these locked too. If you pull up to a park and only do straight but someone who can throw a fat daddy or cosack gets some mad respect
Skiing is 90% mental. The first time I went skiing I was too scared to shift my weight from leg to leg and ended up snow ploughing the entire way down the greens. Once you get over the mental hurdle and trust that leaning and letting the edge bite will work it becomes so smooth and buttery.
And then you get overconfident and fall 5 meters down a black. Edit: Yes, it can be hard to overcome fear but you make it seem like you can ski anything if you arent afraid. That mindset would kill you
Was so hyped for the season 19/20, went skiing in November 2019 and broke my Collarbone and have a rail on my bone until Dezember 2020 I’m so happy when I can ski again :(
I feel ya man. I blew out my knee in early November of 2018. Only two weeks after I bought all brand new gear and a season pass. but now I'm skiing again. Life goes on! Good luck dude.

Hey stomp it thank for for the tutorials. So with 100% confidence I was able to stomp it ! So sick! Cheers from Vancouver Canada
Use the tips in this video, and just practice practice practice. Start on the beginner slope, and slowly work your way there. Took me a whole half-season (20ish ski days) to feel comfortable skiing down a whole blue trail switch, let alone landing switch.
I've been skiing for a year now and all I can do is DBs, switch and box's, I really want to learn 180s though. But it's only Minnesota DBs in my local area

Decided to play around a bit more in the spring on the local hill due to conditions. Then Covid closed them. I'll have to review next season but thanks for a starting point.
Love the video! Quick question: How much of a disadvantage am I at doing tricks like these with front-side downhill skis as opposed to actual freestyle skis?
Well, if you are riding regular skis, it is much harder to land switch as they don't have inverted tails. Also, if your boots are more than 2+ from center it also makes it more difficult to find center. That's all I have had issues with riding regular skis on free ride.
^^ there are pretty big advantages in the park but theres also not really a downside unless you're backcountry/powder skiing imo. I use my park skis on groomers and I carve just as hard as my buddies on pistes while being able to spin/butter. only downside is they're a lot flexier but its not necessarily a bad thing it just means you need more control while carving at higher speeds.
I can ride black diamond mountains and i know how to ski and love to ski, but ive always wanted to learn tricks so thanks for the video!

Hey could you do a video on the best tricks to do on non twintip skies? 😁
you can do these with normal skis too
@Cerik Lemoine no you don't, you can still ski backwards with non twintip skis
@Cerik Lemoine Yup, did many 180s with mine and they are completely flat on the tail. Its a bit sketchy in the beginning, but you get used to it.
It is good to see this video, combo of different skills.
This video was very well instructed.
In my opinion theres a big disadvantage on regular skis, just switches to freestyle skis and everything is so much easier
its basically the same if youre skilled enough, skis become a tiny factor once youve built up skill
