Lancia Stratos HF Rally Gr. 4 on Swiss Hillclimb: Starts, Accelerations & Best of Dino V6 Sounds!

- Like every year, I can't help but upload a video entirely dedicated to this fantastic rally car. This one is from the 2021 and 2022 Bernina Gran Turismo historic hillclimb in Switzerland during which I managed to record three different Stratos Group 4 cars, one fitted with a 6-in-1 exhaust, giving her a more high-pitched tone, and the other two with the typical 3-1/3-1 layout making the iconic V6 echoing through the mountains.
Bernina Gran Turismo is an event born in 2014 with the aim of keep the memory of the legendary Bernina hillclimb race of 1929 and 1930 alive. It's held on the beautiful Bernina Pass in Switzerland, on a section of the original route specifically closed to traffic, with the hilclimb course starting from La Rösa (1,871 m above sea level) and ending up on the actual Bernina Pass (2,328 m) after a total of 5.9 km. Back to those years this competition was part of the International St. Moritz Automobile Week, which consisted of a rally, the kilometer race, a skill race, a concours d'elegance and, as a conclusion, the hillclimb race. Since 2021 BGT's organizers decided to celebrate the whole International St. Moritz Automobile Week of those two years with a selection of events which recalled the original ones.
Lancia unveiled the Stratos HF prototype at the 1971 Turin Motor Show, a year after the announcement of the Stratos Zero concept car. That car was powered by a mid-mounted Dino Ferrari V6 engine producing 192 hp and was officially sold as Stratos HF Stradale. Lancia undertook extensive testing with the Stratos and raced the car in several racing events where Group 5 prototypes were allowed during the 1972 and 1973 seasons.The production of the 500 cars required for homologation in Group 4 started in 1973 and it was finally homologated to race in the 1974 World Rally championship.
The Stratos rally and race cars were moved by the same Ferrari V6 engine of the Stradale but with a bit more power. It was around 275 hp for the original 12 valve version and 320 hp for the 24 valve version. Beginning with the 1978 season the 24 valve heads were banned from group 4 competition by a change to the FIA rules (which would have required additional production of 24-valve cars for re-homologation). The Stratos Gr. 4 weighed between 900 and 950 kilograms, depending on configuration. Only 50 Stratos rally cars were built and it won the 1974, 1975 and 1976 championship titles in the hands of Sandro Munari and Björn Waldegård.

Hard to find a car with the looks, sound and performance all in one package like the Lancia Stratos
This was one of my childhood rally car back in the day when I watched a lot of rally events on SpeedTV. Great to see and hear these racing machines again! :)
As an American, a massive V8, with a wild cam and straight pipes, will always cause me to break my neck to see what's coming.
That said, a well built V6 shouldn't be scoffed at, ever...and I will also risk paralysis to discover what's making sounds similar to the glorious and soulful Lancia.

V8 are so commonplace here, I'm more interested in other cars, even a 4 cylinder. Not that I don't like american muscle.
There's a new style Lancia Stratos that is built using the Ferrari F430 V8 engine and a shortened F430 Scuderia chassis. Only limited to 25 cars I think.

V8s seem to be in a sweet spot in the automotive world. You can buy one from a junkyard for a few hundred bucks and rebuild it. Install it in whatever you want and drive it for 200k miles. Or, you can see them racing around the globe with flat plane cranks, 8 into 1 exhaust, or whatever the racer desires, and they all just run and run and run.
That said, I love any engine that isn't crap, as long as it's not in a crap car...bit of a waste.
It's an outgrowth of a Ferrari formula 1 , enough said . Sound doesn't propel the car ,torque and revs ( horsepower ) do in a very small light and very sophisticated chassis
Back in '79 I walked the length of the Castle O'er RAC rally stage. Markku Alen started the stage in the overall lead. Out in the middle of the forest away from the crowds, we turned a corner and there sat the Stratos with the engine cover up and a gearbox full of neutrals.
I love the Stratos it is my ultimate dream car. The unique styling look, performance, handling and history.

Lancia did really well with the engine choice that V6 from the Ferrari Dino sounds amazing,definitely one of the best sounding V6’s of all time.
This is my all-time favorite car. It was really evocative to see one being driven fully balls out on a rally stage back in the day.

I will never not love the sound of a Stratos.
I first saw/heard a Stratos on the RAC rally in the Welsh forests. To hear and see this car at full chat on gravel roads was awe inspiring. Thanks for the memories
The Stratos and the Countach both look as timelessly and sensationally whacky today as they did in the early '70s. Absolutely fantastic and uniquely iconic designs. No driver would dare to push an original Stratos to the limit of its abilities nowadays because they're far too valuable.
Still such a cool, purposeful weapon of a car. Short, stubby, squat and muscular and oh so cool.

What was the sign saying "⚠️ Polizei" just past the start line for? Were they hiding behind a rock with a radar gun 🔫?
haha of course no. I believe in this case it's more to signal the presence of a dangerous area for the road users coming from the opposite direction. I know it's pretty strange to see it over there and not on the opposite side of the roadway but maybe the reason is to not interfer with the trajectory of the cars taking part in the competition. Especially at noon, when the course opens to road traffic for a couple of hours, near the start line there are still people moving (marshalls, race director and staff) and all the necessary equipment to to run the race (photocells for the timing systems, generators etc.). So my guess is just to warn road users

Not so much ended up rallying as was built with that purpose so has short wheelbase so you can change direction quickly.
