Ayurvedic Recipe: Dahl (Lentil Soup)

  • -1 cup red lentils, rinsed
    -4 cups water
    -1 teaspoon ground turmeric
    -1 pinch asafetida (hing)
    -1 teaspoons salt
    -2 tablespoons ghee (clarified butter)or coconut oil
    -1 teaspoon mustard seeds
    -1 teaspoon cumin seeds
    -1 1/2 teaspoons fresh ginger, grated
    -8 curry leaves
    -2 tablespoons unsweetened grated coconut
    -2 teaspoons ground coriander
    -1 teaspoon ground cumin
    -1/4 cup cilantro, chopped
    1.-Combine the lentils, water, turmeric, and asafetida in a small crockpot or rice cooker. Once cooked, add the salt.
    2.-In a saucepan on medium heat, warm up the ghee and add the mustard and cumin seeds until they pop. Then add the ginger and curry leaves until they release a nice aroma. Finally add the coconut flakes, coriander and ground cumin.
    3.-Pour the spices and the cilantro over the lentils and mix.
