- This video, I cover how warm up your BMW engine. How to increase the longevity of the engine and transmissions. Drive it and have fun! It's simple. No need to wait for 5 minutes for the engine to warm up. You don't have to baby it in fear of breaking it. Get it out on the open road and enjoy it! Take it to an auto cross event. These cars are engineered to be driven fast. Thrown into an occasional curve to really appreciate the handling!

My suggestion would be to wait a bit longer even after your engine oil temps have gotten to operating temps because your transmission fluid takes longer to warm up than your coolant and engine oil. Your coolant temp goes up first, then engine oil, then transmission fluid in that order.
Also Engineering Explained did a detailed video of this a few years ago.
Regarding stopping, you actually want to idle your car to help bring temps down progressively after a spirited drive, never just cut your car off if you've been running it hard. As an example every race car driver/sport do cool down laps specifically for the reason explained.
I don't know if you're an engineer, if not definitely ask one and challenge your own argument. Would make good content regardless.
Great points. 6:25 you can see the engine oil is still cold

Great video, awesome cars !
master tech from Bmw, allow the engine to idle at least 3 full minutes before driving. The first thing that gets warm in the car is the turbos, it does not necessarily means you are good to go, you can experience jerk shifting when the oil temperature is still not warm enough to lubricate the internals so I don't agree with you driving off soon as the rpm drops, you will eventually damage the engine. Just know these engine operate well with optimal temps. DO not drive car with cold engine , not a good practice.
Three full minutes? I beg to differ. You’re talking about marginal differences in temperature from 30 seconds. I still stand by what I said. The quickest way is to drive it gently.
Maybe if it were subfreezing temps, I would turn it on, clean off the snow/ice and begin my journey. However long that should be more than adequate for driving.
@@eddiemcars Agree with you, yes turbos also need warming and lube but a nice slow couple minutes of driving is better than idling for 3 minutes. Variable load, mixed air flow, and gets gearbox warmed up better/faster too
Nooo way three minutes. If that was the case it would say so in the manual
@@ScottSellsSoCal not everything will BMW advise u to do remember this, they are in business to make money. Blow ur car up and bring it back lets make money , that what dealership are known for just like they tell people trans fluid Is life time. good luck doing ur own thing , at least im a master tech directly at Bmw and giving u this info, keep it or destroy ur engine by driving it soon as u start.
@@maxmarshal2482 yo bro whats ur instagram so u can help me warm my car
This is critical, especially people with S85 engines. Most of the rod bearing failures on those are happening because people don’t care about warm up times and automatically want to hear the scream of the engine and go fast. This applies to all BMWs due to how the oils are and power output these engines make.
Love the video. Keep up the awesome content.
Thank you so much for such GREAT info!! 👍👍 As a female owner of the newer X5, I can say that your tips are things that I didn't know before!! And I've owned several BMWs. So, you truly are given GEMS of info to viewers on ways that they can PROTECT the mechanicals of their cars & ensure longevity. Lastly, giving visuals on what you are saying helps a TON, esp. for people like me who are visual learners!! From the U.S.
Hey! Thank you so much! I’m glad you found them helpful! I’m a visual learner myself, so I totally get it!
Also I'd recommend to anyone buy a oil temperature gauge and oil pressure gauge or buy one of those dongles that provide oil temp/pressure via app.
What are you even talking about? I just start the car, MASH the pedal in park and then hard shove it in to drive and blow the entire engine. Now, its nice and warm to drive.
Hell yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!
I don’t think that’s recommended for longevity 😂
Great video, when you say these cars (bmw) are built for high rpm ext. does that also apply to non m cars like a 428i/430i? If so once the car is properly warmed up at least from what I know not much harm if at all is done from pushing the vehicle.
Yes, all BMW’s should be opened up occasionally. Remember, these powertrains are designed German autobahns which they expect the owner the be cruising at 100mph and need passing power from 60-100!
I have a bmw 330i f30 and I do the exact same let it sit till RPM IS BELOW 1k and sitting around 800 rpm then go slowly let the fluid warm up then put that baby in sport and drop a few gears and step on it
If I get pulled over for driving above the posted speed limit ,I will tell the officer that Ed said. "Drive it like you stole it, it's needed" ...#BMRLIFE 🔥💯✌🏾
How did you make your exhaust on the X5M burble in the beginning? I have an X6M and it doesn't sound as good as yours
It has a stage 1 tune from BootMod3
The off the shelf tune has a mild burble.
Hi!!! Thanks for your videos!!! Please, I would appreciated if you help me. I have a F15 2015 with digital cluster 6wb but I want get to put the gear number next to letter D. It is possible with bimmercode or other sotfware? Thanks in advance!
I think someone else asked that. Don’t quote me but I don’t think it’s possible. I’ve never seen it under BimmerCode but I also didn’t have Digital cluster so my options would look different than yours.
@@eddiemcars thank you very much!!!
the Manuel says to drive off at moderate speeds, which warm the engine with no issue the same.
Well some with misinformed information thinks sitting and idling the engine for 10 minutes is better for the engine.
I have a 2015 x50i. How do I get the gear selector which tells you what gear you in?
Unfortunately, that display only shows on the M models. The F15/16 only tells you if you’re in PRND and DS
If you go to M, it will display the current gear but you must upshift/downshift yourself.
You didn’t cover what to do at the end of the trip. I saw multiple posts that for these particular engines with the way the turbos are on top of the engine in a V, it is strongly recommended to let the cat run for about 2 minutes after you stop, especially after a long drive. Cooling fan of course will work long after you shut off the engine, however it will cool much quicker when engine is running after a stop and your turbos will thank you for that 👍
Good information! I was going to make a separate video on that! I typically drive slower and the end of the trip. If I ran it hard, I’ll give it a couple of minutes of idle time. Then I’ll open the hood. Of course it’s completely optional.
My older cars I had turbo timers where I could get out and lock the car with engine running and have it turn off on its own!
Ever since I let my car run , since I was advised to do the same. I haven’t had a problem with my 2014 650i. I always usually really drive it so I let it sit for almost 7-10 mins every time. I didn’t know how long I should let it sit exactly. I can hear the fan sometimes & sometimes I let it run so long I don’t even need the fan lol. You have to treat these bmws like a delicate women & when we warm her up that’s when we beat the panties off that Beamer
Great video & information Thank you ...#BMRLIFE
What about with the X5 45e? We get our 2022 in a few months.
I want to learn more about the 45e. I Believe your ICE will be off half of the time therefore I’m not sure about warm up. The transmission temperature is important but the same rules apply. Gentle driving
Hybrids are also designed to turn on/off repeatedly so I think you’re safe.
Used to have a Lexus Rx450h and cold start would run the ICE for about 30-60 seconds to warm fluids up regardless if in EV power or not.
That was enough to suffice a decent warmup.
Hello
are these the original exhaust systems?
if so. how did you manage the bubbling when you switch down? greetings from Switzerland
Yes it's the original exhaust. It's an aftermarket software to increase horsepower and part of the software tweak is mild "burble" when slowing down or downshifting. The software is called Bootmod3 from Protuning Freaks!
@@eddiemcars Thank you very much!!!
@@eddiemcars where do you get this software mod? Any side effects?

Quick question, we just ordered a brand new 2022 x5. You look to be an owner of a couple nice beamers. Just wondering has any of ur x5s reliability put your safety in compromise during a drive?
Congratulations! Never have I ever thought about it breaking or leaving us stranded. I won't hesitate to put my family in it and go on a long road trip. As long as you keep maintenance up to date, you’ll be fine!
@@eddiemcars Thank you for the info, also keep up the great content. Really love seeing a channel about beamers from the owners perspective
@@eddiemcars Please I will like to have a direct chat with you regarding my BMW X5 50i 2015 with M sport package, ive checked your page and cannot have your email or any contact. its urgent
Timing chain issues. Be careful.
this gonna apply to a guy like me who drives in the extreme cold
I am in the market for f85 x5m, is there anything to look out for ? Also what are the most desirable options on these ? Thank you for any info !!!!
The F85/6 came in loaded. The only packages offered were the Executive package and driver assistance package. The rear entertainment, night vision, Bang & Olufsen sound system was mostly personal preference.
I would say find one with the colors you want and then narrow down the options to see if it has what you’re looking for.
Driver assistance is going to include the blind spot monitor and executive pack is going to have the led headlights, auto high beams along with soft close doors.
@@eddiemcars how important is the night vision, i see some got it some dont. Also is there such a thing as a full leather and partial leather on these ? I see some seats are full color and some have black plastic backs. Thanks man, watch all your videos
@@Dentprotony if you live in a rural area and do a lot of backroad driving it could be beneficial. However I live in California and even the backroads has traffic all through the night, I rarely find the opportunity to use my high beams.
The extended leather is partially leather, the door cards and top of the center console. Full merino is where is covering the entire door and pretty much interior is wrapped in leather.
@@eddiemcars do a video on changing oil on your x5m, and maybe a transfer case fluid change (these go through a lot of stress and wont hurt changing fluid every 35-40k miles). And again thank you for taking your time and making all these videos 👍👍👍
Fun is why we buy the BMW! I go wot at least 3 time on the the drive to work every day and I still get 20+ mpg out of the x5 50i
I love it!
a poroper warm up is important for the engine and turbo etc and its also important to let the car idle a couple of minutes so the turbo can cool down. especialy if you have been maching it really hard. You dont want that turbo to melt down like a nuclear reactor. PS this goes for every car and engine especially on a diesel they take so long to warm up and they are more sensitive. if its cold outside i mean really winter a engine warmer is a must on a diesel and maby an option on a petrol.
you don’t think Only waiting for Rpm to set isn’t a full warm up ? i’m not saying sit there for 15 minutes but a good 2/4 minutes Is fine
2-4 minutes of idling isn’t needed with modern fuel-injected cars.
Also, there’s the time you need to back out of the driveway, drive through the neighborhood. Etc. by then, 2-4 min may have already passed.
Unless your driveway is right off a busy road where you may need to step on it right away, it isn’t required. Additionally, the transmission fluid also needs to reach normal temp. I would not want any high rpm shifts on cold fluid.
I personally wait 15 mins before driving to make sure it’s fully warmed up and bmw preferred to wait 15 min before driving off
That is too long. Whoever told you that from BMW gave you wrong information. Unless you mean 15 min before flooring, because that would make more sense.
@@eddiemcars 🤔 probably missed understood them maybe lol
@@eddiemcars 15 mins is waaay too long you right edward
Please stop doing that, now. Pointless, and you are also killing the environment.
Would it be fine to immediately drive it after cold start to move it a few feet across the road?
Absolutely!
@@eddiemcars would I have to idle it after I moved it so the battery can recharge? Because I put it in gear while the seat belt chime was chiming 😂
I revved my M5 engine on a cold start to show a friend. now i know not to do that. I assume im still good after only doing it maybe twice right ?
Yeah. I wouldn't make it a habit, but once or twice won't cause any detrimental damage.
@@eddiemcars thanks for the video. Very informative.
This guy done a pull to redline with his oil temp just above 50 degrees (not fully warmed up) doesn't know what hes talking about 😂
I highly recommend you visit your optometrist.
@@eddiemcars @6:31 your oil level was barely above 160 F i was using metric centigrade before, car was not at optimum oil temp at that time stamp and you still redlined it 🙆🏿♂️
🥶
Wow! I usually let my engine idle for 5 to 7 minutes before I drive it,never again! Thank you.
terrible idea. a throwback from the days when oil technology was lightyears behind where it is today, especially low viscosity synthetic. it takes only a few seconds for oil to circulate, after that, don't send it for the first couple minutes, but you are good to go
@@KevinWillemse I got it!😃😃it's amazing what one can learn here. Thanks to everyone that shares their knowledge.
All cars u must wait for the engine to warmup!!
I honestly wait til my temperature gauges are at 180° minimum.
Before you drive or before you drive aggressively?
@@eddiemcarsbefore i drive
Wait 5 minutes after ignition. Then slowly take off.
Love the spec of your m3. Hard to find the extended leather option (ie dash) on m3/m4, i've been looking hard. And, oh no, how dare you overtake someone in your BMW? then you get branded as the asshole bmw driver lol. Of course I'm sarcastic
Thanks. It took me 6 months to find it!
It’s actually the full merino which covers the top of doors and door cards and dashboard. The extended leather is only the door cards.
And yes I’m a typical BMW driver! I try to use my turn signals when I can though.
Drive it like you stole it!
I drive both of mine like I stole 'em. both the x5 50i and m3!
😂😂
😂
I concur with Ed, I won’t pull off before the idling stops, but my morning regime of starting the car then wiping the car off puts me at about 5 minutes, and the difference in warming up fluids is very marginal
Man if you not burnout you not bmw fan
BMWs are for poor people who want to look rich
