      I have much the same mindset about not impeding people. Partly because it's respectful of other people, but also partly because if I do that I don't need to trust other people's judgement/ attention. For example I don't cut in front of faster moving cars, relying on them to be paying attention and slowing down for me. I also try not to change into a lane directly next to another car - I'll wait till we aren't side by side to change lanes. It's not about letting other people dictate how I drive, it's about not relying on others for my safety.

      I suggest space management as a slogan. Fast drivers are useful because they create space...but then they don’t know when to curtail it as they have created enough space. Slower drivers are also useful because they allow faster traffic to create space...but they often use the same speed in all lanes of the motorway. If you employ a strategy that naturally creates space for everyone, you’ll find it more maneuverable and less stressed which I believe is what everybody wants on the roads.

    My number 1 bad habit? Not keeping enough of a distance to the car in front. Giving yourself time to react in an emergency is paramount in safe and preventive driving. Germany actually has this legislated. You have to maintain half of your current speed (km/h) in meters as minimum safety distance to the car in front. And there are actually special markings on the motorways and measuring tools that the police use in order to enforce this rule.
    Maintaining enough safety distance also allows you in some cases to brake less and therefore save fuel and have reduced brake wear.

    I have 20 years of driving experience in Canada, US, and Hong Kong.
    My biggest pet peeve is people not following the zipper merge technique.
    It’s as if they think driving is a race from A to B, and they cannot afford to give up one or two car spaces.
    The inability to be courteous to other drivers is what often sets off road rage.
    Ironic thing is before I learned the zipper merge technique, I too was one of those drivers that felt being taken advantage off when other cars zip down an empty lane that’s about to end. I used to feel as if they are somehow cheating or skipping the line. I feel that as soon as we all get rid of the notion and belief of trying to always be no. 1 in line, then we will all be able to drive in a much more courteous manner.

    • @morthim
      @morthim 5 лет назад +13

      zipper merge is dumb. it is worse for traffic than not having the lane. also people using the zipper merge technique are rude. it isn't a matter of sorting, it is a matter of throughput.
      the zipper lanes work for letting people on highways because both lanes can fill and it just makes the lane effectively longer. but for normal roads, it takes more time for two lanes to merge than for one lane to fully deplete then the other.
      it isn't a feeling that they are skipping a line. they literally are skipping the line, and causing congestion in the process. if there was no zipper merge, more cars would get through. why? because it is one train of linked cars, instead of multiple.
      it angers me that people advocate these things, cause i've tested them and they don't work. they reduce traffic efficiency by up to 50%. but they try to claim a both falsifiable and false and falsified claim.
      the reason zipper merges "work" for highways, with light protection, but not on normal roads without involves a lack of consistent acceleration and distance. the highway onramps force people to take turns, and engage in full accelleration. conversely, normal roads have a green light allowing traffic to flow, and people doing the dynamic zipper merge do not merge congruent to the rate the natural lane accelerates. thus a 45 seccond light with all cars in a line will get ~30 cars through without a zipper merge and only 15-20 with it. missing a light can add 5 minutes onto a journey, and missing 5 lights can lead to a half hour of wasted transit time directly resultant from people "cutting in line".
      they work for highways not because they actually work, but because the point is to reduce the number of cars on the highway. and congestion is reduced by redirecting traffic onto other routes. the lights for on ramps are taxes, charging time, leading people to avoid the road in favor of other ones.
      at a strictly rational level, if cars in a line were able to merge without the huge lane efficiency costs, you are both right and it would be better, but they can't. thus it would be better to have lights with disappearing lanes do one then the other. because again, it takes only the drive time of the vehicles * the vehicles to get a single lane of traffic through, meanwhile there are merging inefficiencies. cars aren't sequenced so they have to match speed and direction. but there is no direction in a presequenced line. thus there is only speed and distance from the bumper infront of you.

    • @affilinet
      @affilinet 5 лет назад +13

      @@morthim You are wrong, Traffic flows faster with zipper merge.
      You merge at the end, One car from One lane and One car from the other lane, simple.
      If people Try to merge earlier you create multiple points where the traffic slows down.You have to merge at some point.There are Computer simulations Proving this.
      Another thing is when a Traffic light turns Green it would be faster if all cars Start moving at the same time instead of One After the other.

    The "people pulling out and not speeding up" is so relateble and I think you're the first one I've heard complain about it. I think out of all of these bad habits that's the one that irritates me the most. I'll be driving 60MPH (97kph) and all of a sudden somebody will cut out right in front of me and BARLEY accelerate. This is turn causes me to have to slam on my brakes. The most annoying thing is when it's on an open road and they could have waited an extra 5 seconds and not need to cut me off. It's understandable if there is heavier traffic and somebody is desperate for an opening, but usually in those situations the person cutting in to traffic will floor it to get up to speed, or if they're really courteous they will move over the the other lane if it's a 4 lane highway to let you pass them before moving back over.

    I feel like the biggest problem among drivers is impatience. People drive with excess speed and with a disregard for other people so that they can feel like they're getting to their destination faster, when in reality they end up waiting at the same traffic lights as the guy who drives under the speed limit. I've only been driving for a year, and I've had people honk at me multiple times for turning through an intersection too slowly, despite the fact that it was warranted by the blind corner and my driving instructor says that I was not too slow. People get angry for having to wait 0.5 seconds. They need to relax and get some perspective. Driving is a serious responsibility.

      Honestly, as long as your driving the speed limit I don't disagree, however talking corners or turns slow for me isnt annoying to makes me angry because it then slows me down, I would never advise someone take a corner or turn faster than they can handle and people that slow down for them it still makes me mad but its 100 percent understandable what makes me angry is when people practically stop for them as it gets in my way and shows they have no business driving if they don't know how or can not drive a corner
      The reason it makes me angry however is different than most its not impatience its because I drive VERY efficiently and save alot of money doing so. from a physics standpoint the less you need to slow down to take a curve or turn the most efficient it is

    I actively try to be the last car in the rubber band effect by watching for drivers that hit the brakes for every change in driving they see on the highway, keeping some distance, and trying to predict their braking with a lift off of the accelerator. I will catch up the them still, but it smoothes out the traffic behind me.
    Also, I did a video in hazard lights in the rain that viewers of this video may be interested in.

      I try this too, but if there are more lanes, at least where i live, this is impossible. The second i leave a space to barely accommodate a car, the car in next lane skips in front of me. Sometimes even the driver behind me is tired of smoothly driving 10-20km/h in traffic, so he overtakes me whenever possible, just to return to the usual break-throttle routine. The only thing people accomplish by this is more stress. To self, and to the others.

    • @ThinkDifferentish
      @ThinkDifferentish 5 лет назад +10

      I also try to smooth out the traffic flow by following not so damn close and NOT using my brakes unless absolutely necessary. I swear there are a lot of people that believe a vehicle will not slow or even stop without the brake pedal. ON/OFF. Big problem in Norfolk, VA area is people not driving with lights on, both at night and in the rain! Also selfish bastards who are not in the correct lane, pass everyone, and then attempt to cut everybody at the eventual exit everybody is taking (everybody here is going to the same place). WHEN IN HEAVY TRAFFIC, BE IN THE LANE YOU KNOW YOU NEED TO BE IN! The traffic is so bad in that lane because of people like YOU cutting everyone up ahead! A few people can create civilization, some can maintain it, but many can't do anything but destroy it.

    • @atanastimev7431

      I started doing this with the same good intentions but I realized that is not doing much good. Problem is people are not very good in judging speed and spotting speed difference without having some sort of indicator(brake lights in our case). When you lift of and decelerate without the brakes, people behind you are not paying attention and they keep speeding until they come really close. At which point they slam on the brakes and the whole chain reaction is restarted but with greater intensity. It also increases the chances of been rear-ended.

      i have been driving in the mountains in a rig for ten years and my truck is speed restricted so I feel that pain.

    out of the turn. And because it reduces grip for the driver doing it... especially if the road conditions are slick like on ice or snow.

      I agree, but I find in many “southern states of America” trucks often try to pass 4-5 trucks in a row not just 1 at a time and can literally take 3-5 minutes doing so going 65MPH and people get pissed and start trying to passing on the right.

    • @VAspeed3
      @VAspeed3 6 лет назад +26

      Trucks that want to take 2 minutes to pass another truck to gain a half mile per hour should just decide not to pass and stay out of the way of faster moving traffic. Huge jams and accidents result in the clots of traffic that pile up behind them. If a truck gets passed on the right, it's usually because he doesn't belong in the left.

    • @32Tdub

      I get your point, but this actually falls into the "pull in front of you and fails to speed up" category much of the time. If you're going to move into the left lane you should be prepared to participate by at least speeding up to some degree to finish your pass. I find that most trucks that are hanging there to pass several trucks are doing so at almost 1 mph over the other truck. Like watching paint dry lol.

    I have 5 even worse:
    1) People who should merge onto a highway but instead come to a COMPLETE stop. Talk about setting yourself up to get rear ended.
    2) Not leaving enough space between you and the car in front. I don't know who said to keep a car or 2 car lengths in front, but that is complete bullshit. As the speed increases, so too must the distance you keep from the next person. I've seen more accidents caused by people driving too close than any other type of accident. Related to this is when you are keeping a safe distance from a car in front, but someone decides to merge in between. Now there isn't enough space for either of the 3 cars. And don't even talk about tail gating. Tail gating is never safe for either party, nor the parties behind.
    3) Brake checking someone. This ties in with road rage, but who ever thinks it's a good idea to brake check someone doesn't realize how many other lives you put at risk. Driving is not the time to 'punish' someone.
    4) Texting / driving drunk / driving stoned. I classify these three as equally dangerous. How many times has a texting driver veered into an oncoming lane? That's got to be the most dangerous type of accident (head on where you just clip the side of another car). Any distracted driving or impaired driving should not be tolerated. It kills.
    5) People that pass you only to slow down right after the pass is made.

    I'd like to add tailgating to this list. Not only is it extremely dangerous but very rude as well. Just be patient and nice on the road. I find that people are always nice and polite in person, even when others are being complete wads, but on the road someone can make one tiny mistake and all of a sudden other drivers are fuming with anger. I think it's almost like keyboard courage. Treat everyone with respect and be forgiving, and that's safer too.

      I hate tailgaters...... I'm always checking my rearview to see how close people are getting .... Usually when they get too close for my comfort, I just flash them with the hazards to have them back off or pass..... No need to be that close to me..... For the most part they either back off or pass..... Some do it safely and then you have some that decide they need to rev up past me just because I'm doing the speed I need to do to keep a safe distance from the car ahead of me especially right before an off ramp

      tailgating, or not having proper distance to the car in front, is fucking horrid, pointless and one of the leading causes of accidents, especially on the freeway. you cannot react, you cannot see past the front car, you're being an asshole and you're not arriving any earlier. its fucking brainless, reactive BS.

      It's a psychological thing. When we meet someone face to face, we usually treat them with appropriate respect. However when cucooned in a car we see them as a competitor, an adversary or an enemy, less than human, and treat them as such.

      It’s definitely the anonymity video game effect. Other drivers are looked at as another car or not another human being. This goes both ways... for the aggressive driver coming 2ft. From your bumper as they pass and for the person camping in the left lane. Be aware of the situation and don’t be oblivious to how your actions are affecting others. Actually care about others!?! This is actually not hard but it seems that many people these days feel they shouldn’t be bothered with caring about their fellow man/woman. It’s easy to be polite in person but when people feel insulated by their screen or their windshield their true nature seems to override their behaviors. We can do better as a society but it takes parents raising their kids to be considerate of others. Seems pretty hard for people to grasp this if they weren’t raised with a conscious awareness of others.

    • @FreewayBrent

      I'm convinced that at least 80% of those who tailgate have absolutely zero clue that they're being annoying or dangerous. Just tailgating and minding their own business, completely oblivious to the fact that they're eventually going to rear-end someone.

    The turn signal one and not signalling lane changes. There are three reasons people do this and three only:
    1) They are too stupid to work a simple lever.
    2) They are too lazy.
    3) Both.
    And I'll admit, I used to be bad with signals. I'd always use them, but I only let the bulb flash once. Then one day I realized how stupid and useless I was being by doing that. So I like the part at the end of the video that we all make mistakes, the key is to realize it and do better.
    The sad thing is, lots and lots of people just don't care, or worse, don't know better. They'll go their entire life not using their signals thinking everyone else is the asshole for a cautionary honk or quick high beam blip, never realizing they are the ones at 100% fault. Wrecking their cars and getting into fender-benders because "everyone else is stupid."
    At its core, not signalling signifies a general passiveness, lackadaisical attitude, and downright reckless approach to driving. If signalling isn't important to you, odds are you likely have a few dents on your car or a few avoidable fender benders on your insurance. We've been lulled into the false sense of security our safe cars lead us to believe, and increasingly distracted by gizmos. The windshield alone is enough to make you forget you're actually doing something extremely dangerous since you can't feel the violence of the high speed wind on your face and the roar of traffic. We might as well be sitting in a recliner listening to music.
    So ALWAYS use your signals and keep up with the FLOW of traffic. Then WHEN you make a mistake, OWN IT and try to be better.

There is ABSOLUTELY NO EXCUSE even if you are over the speed limit to impede other drivers from passing you; they have the right to speed if they want, and in most states, the left lane is the passing lane, by law. Going 45MPH on a 55 isn't going to save you money/fuel or time, the same way going 30 in a 35 zone won't save you money because you're in a lower gear & slower speeds consuming more Revolutions/min in a longer period of time, which then the argument would be to go 40MPH in a taller gear to save fuel.
      50MPH can be argued depending on the car as that's the sweet spot, but 55MPH is negligible in fuel loss, typically anything over 60MPH or 2.6RPMs is wasting fuel & makes your car less efficient aerodynamically.

      @ZambonieDude I'm talking about doing a leisurely~70mph instead of 75-80 (depending on the highway). Speed limit here is typically 120-130 km/h. I've had significant fuel economy over 6-8 hour trips, several times, and it's worth the extra hour. YMMV.

    my #1 which wasn't on this list, is when you're driving well over the speed limit in the left lane (i.e. your cruise control set to 76 in a 65) and going faster than the vehicles in the right lane, but someone behind you speeds up into the 80s and passes you, but then end up driving slower than you were going (i.e. 68-70 mph), so you end up having to pass them, and continue at a steady 76mph, but then of course, they feel the need to once again accelerate and pass you and resume at 70mph, and this going back and forth back and forth, it's quite annoying.. it would be ok if they passed and continued to drive faster, but overtime, they always seem to end up slowing down.
    I guess this also goes with the mentality that they want to be infront, but it's very annoying when they pass you but end up not driving faster than you were, which causes you to have to hit your brakes, disengage cruise control, and/or have to pass them. I usually have to slam my gas when they attempt to pass more than twice and deny them or gain enough distance ahead of them that they don't feel the need to pass (out of range of their subconscious that tells them to be in front).

      It might be also that they're terrible at judging the speed of other drivers. Possibly they might feel like you're driving a little slower than them (even though you're not) so they pass and get in front. Then they don't realize you were already going faster than they were so you end up having to slow down for them. Highway hypnosis, anxiety, sleep deprivation, bad day, and other stuff may also come into play. But yes, it's annoying having to slow down for someone pulling in front and slowing down.

    This video is great man. I am so glad someone else is saying this shit. Everyone of these is spot on. I can't stand when people ride my ass. If there is no one in front of me, people don't typically catch up to me, but if I'm behind 10 slow cars, I can't go any faster. So I always inch over so they can see its not my fault but instead of backing up, they get on my ass because I'm leaving the proper amount of room between me and the next car. Don't know if he says this yet or not, I'm not through it all yet, but at LEAST 1 car length for every 10 mph you are going. S0 70 miles and hour =7 + 1 car lengths just to be safe. I speed a LOT on the highway, but I am always extremely courteous to others while doing so. I do not tailgate, I do not cut others off and I'm always prepared for what anyone may do around me and I always have an out. I have avoided a ton of accidents, since I use the highway at least twice a day, and I always over compensate for someone else's stupidity. If someone is riding my ass, I'll give myself more room to stop and if I have to brake hard, I'll use that space to slow down and keep them from hitting me and then still stop a length or two early just so I can pull up if they don't have time to stop still. I move over ahead of time when I think someone is going to get in my current lane. By me, people camp in all 5 lanes so I have to maneuver around, but I do it safely. Most people that speed just fly up on everyone, ride their ass and cut someone off to go around. Like he said too, I can be behind someone in a lane for miles and they are going slow and don't speed up. As soon as I get over and punch it to get around them, THEN they want to fucking go faster so I can't pass them, and then they go back to the speed they were doing. Or when coming down a road with a 45 mph limit and I'm the LAST car in a clump of cars and I have the 5 car lengths between me and someone just has to get out in the road and they wait until the car before me goes, and then they, not only pull out, but do it slow as fuck and then go 20 mph in a 45 and there isn't a car in SIGHT behind me. Why the fuck can't they just wait 2 seconds for me to pass and then they can go as slow as they want instead of making me almost nail them?? This happens ever on a 4 lane road and they ALWAYS pull into my lane, not the other one. Even if I move inside so they have the outside freed up, they still hit my lane. I'm an offensive driver with a defensive driver's mindset. I think like them but drive like me and I always expect each person I pass to do the dumbest shit possible so when it happens I'm never caught off guard.

      K M I wish he would have also touched on driving in conditions where visibility is limited such as heavy rain, fog, dusk or dawn or night time with your lights off (daytime running lights don’t count). This rule seems to be broken just as often as all the others, and it almost always seems to be committed by Nissan and Toyota drivers.

      I own a heavy vehicle I drive to the conditions (current vehicle and driver capabilities, weather, road surface, fuel efficiency, traffic, etc) not some arbitrary speed limit, tail gate me and I while I won't brake check you I will slow down too, not because I want to piss you off but I know my family would rather me get there late than not at all.
      Also don't cut in front of heavy vehicles too close we are trying to maintain a braking distance.
      Motorcycle lane filtering is the most creepy thing imaginable, realise trucks and vans can't see you, calm down and be patient.
      Do you really need two or three sets of ultra glarey, ultra white, HID lights 24/7 on well lit city and suburban roads? Not only is it illegal it makes you look like a myopic self centred idiot. I'm waiting for pea soup fog so you can all see how "cool" you are!
      Road abusers are worse than paedophiles and cyberbullies, and they cause more short term and permanent physical, mental, emotional, and financial damage.

    What about not knowing how your headights work? High beams always on (usually 8th gen Civics) or no headlights at all. (DRLs on, no taillights). So irritating! Love this video!

      DRLs shouldn't be a thing. So many people now drive around forgetting their headlights are off because the fucking stupid LED DRLs are so bright. Too bad you can't see them whatsoever from behind. Mfrs should be required for interior panel lighting to remain fully off whenever the headlights aren't turned on, that way people at least have a chance to get a fucking clue.
      I was behind a guy last night coming home from work who was doing this (DRLs only). I pulled up next to him and turned all my lights on and off five or six times. No response. Got behind him and did the same: no response. Pulled in front of him, turned on hazard lights, clicked all exterior lighting on and off several times. No response. People are really, really fucking stupid.

    As an avid cruise control user, you hit the nail on the head with speeding up when I am trying to pass.
    That and people who won't pass a truck. They ride in its blind spot for a few miles then go 90 until they reach another truck where they proceed to ride in the blind spot at 55 again. Wtf is that?

    Keep in mind that sometimes the passing lane is also the "gotta make a left turn" lane. It can be tricky to get over in the left lane in time to safely make the turn without impeding the speeders when you have a parade of cars going 30mph over the speed limit.

    One of my biggest pet peeves that seems to be getting more common (at least in the Bay Area) are people who stop a full 1 or 2 car lengths of where they should be at a stop light and creep up 10 inches every 5 seconds.

      That's the "Scoot up game". They are trying to see if they can control you behind them and have you scoot up several times along with them. I will just wait until they get to the spot where the are supposed to be at and only then, I move. Or maybe not because I don't want to play the game that day and just sit back one or two car lengths after they are done moving several times.

    Great list. Now you have to do another one for night driving. It could include all meeting cars on high beam, driving with only daytime driving lights on, misaligned headlights including those caused by an overloaded vehicle, and the worst of all, slowing down every time you meet a car.

    I feel this entire video is pointed directly at the drivers in Central Florida, especially the part where they drive 10 to 15 under the limit and hit the brakes on every single bend in the road. I hate these people here.

    Driving under the speed limit, you didn't really give them a reason to not do it.. Your only logic was you're wasting your life, now I know someone who does this and dosen't care about loosing days of their life.
    Don't drive under the speed limit because you W I L L impeed the flow of traffic and cause other drivers to excessively pass you to get back to either the speed limit or faster.
    This can & will cause accidents.

    • @JoshuasRecordings
      @JoshuasRecordings 5 лет назад +6

      @All Skill No Luck Where I live the limits are set absurdly low and almost everyone (good drivers) drives above the limit (between 5-15 mph faster). But there always is that one person (usually in a Prius or a Subaru) driving under the limit. That creates a long line of pissed off drivers who then pass the person aggressively. Most of the roads where I live have a lot of curves (not corners) and so there are very few passing zones.
      I don't know about other countries or even some states, but in the northeast USA speed limits are absurdly low. The speed on that sign is the MINIMUM you should be driving unless you want to be rear ended or its snowing.

      Someone I know sets his cruise control 1 mile below the speed limit on highways as everyone shoots past us going 20 over, but to him, it's worth risking death to be "technically" right. We almost got rear ended three times in one trip from people looking at their phones while moving with the flow of traffic, not expecting someone to be traveling so slow in front of them.

    Great video. My biggest annoyance is when someone pulls out ahead of me then drives slowly. Drives me crazy. I drive fast and tend to camp in the left lane...but I will dip out and move out of the way if I see someone coming up on me faster than I am going. The other pet peeve is if I pull over to let some one pass then they just pull in front of me instead of staying fast in the left lane. Then I have to pull out and pass them.
