Every time I've gone to buy a new car - I knew more about the car than a sales person did. Always. They cannot sell me anything, because I know exactly what I want. And let me tell you...they haaaaaaaaaaaaaaate me!

Yup me too. When I go check out a car I’ve already done a lot of research. I always know more than the salesperson and often correct them about the car they are trying to sell me.
Same here, I usually know everything I need to know and made my decision based on my knowledge of particular car. So going into dealership I know I want to buy it. Only thing left to take care of at the dealership is, test drive and what kind of deal I can make and the financial stuff. Buying a car is not same as buying candy in a candy shop. I have no problems walking into candy shop and not knowing what I want and rely on store people suggesting what candy to get. Dealerships are different and too many people walk in there, clueless as to what they really want.
I've been a sales person for Lexus for almost two months. I am as transparent as a clean window. I feel no urgency to sell anyone a car. I answer questions, inform, and relax. If they want the car, I can help them in the buying process. If they don't want the car, I thank them for their time and wish them well!
I will be honest with you, informed salesman will always sell less then these who know less. I thought the same and always gave honest answer to customers. Some will appreciate it, but most will not. Sad thing is everything comes down to ur paycheck vs honestly. Tough choice when you have bills to pay. Not saying you lie to sell the car but lot of times when you inform customers things get complicated. Good luck with sales I was in sales for 6years and made top sales in 2different dealerships.
I will often ask the salesman for their pitch when I'm on the fence about a car. Sell it to me. Tell me why its a good car to buy. This actually throws off more salespeople than it should. The good ones know their cars and bring up great points of how the car would compliment my driving needs. If a sales guy stammers and says "Let me show you all the features on the infotainment." I reply "I hate touch screens while driving." If all the car's controls are in the touch screen menus, including HVAC, a good salesman should tell me "then this might not be the car for you". If instead they try to convince me how great touchscreens are, then I am likely walking.
All the points may be common sense, but it’s amazing how many of us have fallen into some of those “traps” during the test drive or sales pitch at the dealership. Great video! 👍
That is why everyone should do their homework before even set foot at the dealership. Technology allows us to get that information easily! If you're prepared, you'll know what model you need, which trim is the best for you and if it's within your budget. The test drive should just be a formality to confirm your choice.
I really don't understand this at all, especially during today's times when the internet gives us all the information regarding vehicles we aim towards. When walking into the dealership you already should know everything about the vehicle inside out (better than any dealer), what most of the buttons do, all of its packages, and what you want exactly. Your only words should be is to tell the seller to be quiet and set you up a test drive. That's it. It's so simple. I view dealers as maggots that have mouths for one purpose, which is to fuck you over any way they can. As soon as you realize this you'd know that anything they recommend just reverse it 180 and you'll most likely be looking at a better deal.
2lazeblue I don’t own either, but I hear where you’re coming from. Although going by all the recent quality reports, both Hyundai & Kia have come a long way in terms of overall dependability. And both brands sell extremely well. I’ve been a Honda guy my entire life, and bought my first Subaru (Forester XT) last August, so I can’t make a fair long-term assessment yet. But so far no complaints.

True. Few are willing to tell buyers what they're getting into, after the purchase (because reviewers fear jeopardizing their access to a steady supply of new cars to review).
Case in point: My mother who drives slower than a turtle, just leased a 440i xdrive. Aside from being a BMW, she said she just liked the color.... I'm pretty sure she would have been just as happy with finding a similar specced 430i instead of being upsold 13k of an engine and performance packages she would never use to it's full potential.

When I bought my base model GTI, the sales dudes tried so hard to pitch the basic tech in the car, and tried to up sell me to an SE for “bigger brakes, sunroof, LSD, and Xenon headlights, leather seats and Navi”. I said bro, you think I’m made of money or something? Give me the base, it’s perfectly fine. It has been an incredible car, there hasn’t been a day where I said “wow I wish I had Xenon headlights and bigger brakes because of all of those track days that I totally take my car to all of the time! Lol. “For only $6,000 more”... BRO 6 GRAND WTF YOU SAYIN ONLY FOR
Agree with this strategy. In my case a Turo-mediated weekend with the car convinced me to make the purchase. But I got waaaay more time with it than I ever would have on a test drive.

I am 100% a car fanatic and most times I can and will find a lot of good things to say just about any car I’ve driven. Good point Gabriel. I'm amazed how upset people get if a vehicle doesn't have a push button start! My wife's 370Z had it but to me putting a key in is no big deal. Toyota trucks get bashed all the time for being dated? What the Hell is dated with a twin cammed V8? No direct injection complexities I guess. It seems a lot of Folks want a new platform every 2-3 years before all the bugs are worked out. These things are often financed for 6 years. Oh well........makes for good reading!

Just some conveniences I have noticed over the years. What I don't understand is some cars require you to put a key in a hole, but then have a push button...thats just pointless
Unless you're purchasing a high performance vehicle, out of warranty, your maintenance/repair costs should be negligible. Most decent cars require little to no routine maintenance for the first year, and just routine care after that. Granted, if you drive like an ass you may end up spending a small fortune on tires for those fancy 20 inch wheels, but that's a personal choice.

Mr. Goose and audience, Actually, this topic is so true! 5 months ago, I was about to get my first car. I would want to get 3-4 years old Mazda3 MT from the dealer(did not think to look for a private market at that time). I made an appointment in advance after I look at the inventory online. When I arrived at the dealership, as usual, he showed me what I want, and finally, take a test drive. We drove through highway for 15 minutes, 5 minutes city driving. I did not try to accelerate or turn hard. I did not know it feels so precise to drive. At that time, I was not yet able to drive a stick smoothly, so maybe it affects how I was not able to dig into the performance. Fast forward, after we returned to the dealership. the Sales ass. said "so, do you like the car?" I answer "yea, pretty good". He replied, " do u wanna talk number?" , I knot right away. on the dealing table, we came back and forth... as you know, there is kinda sales game, the sales go to the manager office and made you wait lol. what a joke, they tried to wear you off. He is a nice person but sadly, this is how the car sales industry works. So, since I don't have experience in car buying, I am still very young to this (my family is out of town, so no one came together with me to the dealer), I was easily "hypnotized" to sign my signature on that piece of paper! I drove the car off the lot with an instant happiness until the 3rd month, and realized I bought a car that is way too expensive+ loan with pretty high-interest rate + new. What a huge mistake in my financial life. I could've got a more affordable vehicle that I pay in cash, more performance, drive as good as this and no payment nor interest. Too bad, I can't turn the clock. Now, I am selling it at 15% lost. I tried to sell it privately, but it is too new in my city, thus makes it difficult to sell. I ended up selling it at the Auction with a slightly higher offer than dealers. Takeaway: 1. Have your mind clear before planning any major purchase 2. DO NOT get emotional with the vehicle you test drive! 3. for first-time buyer, have someone or family member to guide you to the dealership. 4. Take your time and prioritize cash or at least finance with no interest
This is sadly what sellers are trained to do. My grandfather taugh me at an early age sellers and politicans should never be trusted at any capacity. Always check where your limit is financially before walking into the sharktank. In Sweden where i live you cant finans the full amount, you need to pay a minimum of 20% in cash. I have never experienced pushy sellers when ive been at dealerships. in Sweden you are alone on the test drive, the seller is never with you which helps a lot.
I like your rules and I would say not just for first time buyers have someone with you. Even if it's your 2nd, 3rd, or 4th car always bring someone because it distracts the salesman. they have to try to sell to two people rather than just one. and your friend and family member can play the straight man and talk down the features, keep things grounded. I like to bring my father with me even if I don't live at home anymore because he is a surly old man, and a energetic adrenaline junkie. So the salesman has to try to appease both of us. * one last tip spend the majority of the test drive with the radio off. it'll let you listen to the car and it'll make awkward silence that the salesman will try to fill and that's when they slip. also ask a lot of rapid fire technical questions that you know the answer to.
In my opinion the more add on items just means more things that need to be maintained and repaired. But for those who love the add on accessories that come as options on the base model and standard on the higher model range wait until that new model gets older as they depreciate in value and you can buy it at a lower price as I have found that those who can afford to order the optioned out model usually trade them in within a year or two while they are leasing them and whereas they initially drove it off the lot for $8,000 in a year or two they're down to $5,000 - $6,000 depending on milage and condition.
Underrated comment. Definitely a must have when buying new car. I've rented and test driven few cars with electronic brake, it left weird feeling when parking car on uneven ground. First gear + manual handbrake = car will stay where its supposed to be even if something goes wrong.
Actually, a big part of the reason I got my current car is the manual handbrake. Just the analog feel in general is a huge selling point for older cars, imo.
I don't think I generally have this problem when it comes to cars, but this is extremely good advice. I have always done way more research than necessary before even attempting to buy a car or even look into one. Granted I am a BMW guy so all the quirks w/ the previous E chassis, F chassis and now the G chassis I'm well aware of. Not many do. Knowing your cars generally gives you an upper hand when it comes to visiting new dealerships. You would know extremely quickly when a salesman is pitching something that is generally overblown. I love to test this with dealerships or brands I don't generally visit. It's funny to see their reaction when they realize I know more about the car than they do. With the internet and stuff today, it isn't hard to gauge cars way before you even start shopping. Make a list of what you want, especially price and start slimming that list down before you even visit any dealership. If you are nervous, bring a family member that have done this before and they would guide you. Obviously much easier if you come from a family that love cars and goes through their leases quick. Then, also be aware of the dealership and what they are attempting to do when you come in. Some of them are... rather sketchy.
"It's not all that special" Truer words never spoken. Coming back to this video to watch again after 2 years, this originally came out 1 month after I had leased my 2018 Audi S4. I really thought the car would be more fun than it was - once I started to live with it, I got tired of it really fast and while it is certainly a nice, capable car, I basically just tossed it to my wife to drive. I then went out and got a 2019 Civic Type R for my daily which is way more of what I want and I had confidence paying the 36k for the car in cash because I had gone through the motions with several other cars including the Audi to eventually be confident in what I want in a long term car that I hold for 10+ years. That goes with another key point of the video - identifying what you want for that specific car. I discovered this 5 years ago when I got my E92 M3 - it's the first of my fun cars I've owned that I have kept for more than a couple years, because for me personally it's a ton of what I want, short of a 911. I went through quite a few cars before that looking for something I could hold on to and enjoy for a long period of time. Nowadays with the cost of where new cars are, you need to be extremely careful and precise about what you are looking for otherwise you are definitely more likely to get burned, and in a bad way. Again, the video captures this at the end talking about being into a car for 20, 30, or 40k on a loan or something. Mark I just wanted to check back in on this video and comment on how complete and telling the content in this video is.
This is why I say if you have a car that's already mechanically sound and cheap to maintain and you enjoy driving it, then keep it. I've had my 2000 TL in the family since new and it still runs like a clock and is so enjoyable to drive and unless gas prices become un-realistically expensive then i'll keep the car for as long as it can run.
Agreed! I have a 98 Honda Civic dx. So simple and easy to work on plus it has never broken down on me... Well except for the battery one winter but that was changed in a matter of minutes
We love our car salesman! Our family has purchased four cars from him. He doesn't try to up-sell us. He doesn't even talk all that much. We tell him what we want and he makes it happen. As long as he stays the same, we will keep buying from him and recommend him to others.

I've loved my 5000$ 2000 Toyota Solara SLE V6 in black. That thing was loaded with everything, unkillable, comfy, fun and it was a bargain when I bought it in 2010. Had to sell it for cash due to school and stuff. I regret that to this day.
I generally do a of research so I don't have a "bad" purchase. I did point and pick a 500 Abarth in the showroom once when the dealer came back with a trade in value $1000 less than I paid for the car I was trading in a few years ago. Driving the Abarth home I about had a heart attack looking for the A/C button - it had one. Worst car I ever bought was a used 2001 Civic 5-speed coupe, 1.7L. That thing was so slow and gutlass it wasn't even safe on the highway, and I had bought it as a commuter. Got rid of it pretty quick.
Best car purchase: Nissan 350Z. 10 years and over 175,000 miles of pure joy. It still ran amazing when I sold it. Worst Car Purchase: (Besides a Mustang GT that was a total lemon) Honda CR-Z. It felt zippy during the test drive but after the first year you notice how incredibly slow the car is. After intake, headers, exhaust and a tune, it still feels incredibly lethargic. Hoping to sell it early next year and finally get a Porsche.
The Mrs. has decided to buy a new car. What has been nice, she had taken her car in for service and since we have a good relationship with the service manager, she has been able to take a car home and drive it for a day or three. This way we both get to drive it and put it through some tests and experiences. She had gotten to drive five different types of vehicle and it's been fun. She will be buying a new car next month. As a side note, any car I would buy has to have real controls for the HVAC systems and a volume knob.
So much useless tech on cars. Worst part the companies don't ever update their computers so you'll end up with a huge screen and laggy interface down the road. Also not being able to change the a/c with a knob but instead use a screen
They have to add stuff to justify padding the price. With 600+ billion deficit annually, or missed payments, the US government needs to collect more in taxes from goods sold and from higher wages. To get this, they over-regulate production to make everything expensive. You also got to make rich men richer to keep them rabble rousing poor poorer. These wars costs money dude. China and Russia want us in these wars so we burn out and cannot afford to fight them when they begin to colonize the places we depend on for resources. The rich send production to China bc they have fun either way, since we are all poorer in the end, regardless of which countries are superpowers. Hence, Warrent Buffet, supposedly mr. cautious, is heavily invested in Chinese cars vs Tesla.
Oh lord my brothers girlfriends Honda Civic Hatch is a 2018 model with just about 70% of everything in the touch screen. Volume and fan speeds and such. I hate it so much. My 2016 4Runner has the massive knobs for literally everything so you know what your doing and can do it in a instant. Thankfully I do belive near the end of the last gen Civic and the current gen they brought back the knobs. I'm fine with cars changing things up but something just shouldn't be even considered.
Great advices. I ignored all of them when I bought my first car. Went to Opel dealership because I heard that Opel cars are reliable. Quick sales pitch, even quicker 10 minutes long test drive and that was it. Back then I had 0 knowledge about cars. Best car ever! Super comfortable for 4 people (not so much if there are 5-7 people), very practical. Not a single car I've driven in last decade could match it. Its 13 years old and still running fine, though there is rust in few places. I've been looking at new cars lately, all of them are inferior in every way to good old Opel Zafira B, even newer models of same car are not as good as old one.
I drove my friends Mazda for 5 days on a road trip, avoided 2 major collisions, 1 near miss also did 1 high speed chase. I was sold, after that road trip, I immediately went to a dealer to buy one for myself. No trick needed.
I find it easiest to inspect a car when I’m not buying it. Family always asks me to look at them and find info and what they should get. When it’s not mine I’m not emotionally attached so I can logically look at it and see and REMEMBER everything I’m supposed to inspect.

Great video. I couldn't imagine walking into a dealership with "an open mind". That seems like the worst possible thing to do. When i bought my 2015 Mazda6, i looked at the dealers inventory online first and narrowed down to a specific trim with maybe a few color options. I walked into the dealership knowimg exactly what i wanted and thats what i got. In all my years of car buying, ive never had a sales person tey to upselling me on trim or options.
I tell the dealer that I'm going to need at least half a day with your tester, alone with no sales guy with me. If they refuse, just walk out. Also, I tell them straight up that I'm going to test drive all comparables in my class so closing the deal today is not going to happen. Some dealers get irritated by that. You think I'm going to spend 40-50k and not test drive the competition. Lol
If I was the dealer, I would show you the door. Because you are the type of person who has no regard of other people. I would also notify other dealers about you so you won't get any service from them. Good luck buying your next car with this type of attitude.
DZ the dealer has no regard for their customers. Once you sign that lease/loan, you are screwed. Not sure if you noticed but a dealership will treat you differently before you made a purchase and after you made a purchase. Meaning once you bought, you can't back out and they no longer give a shit about you. Learn to think for yourself and don't be so concerned for everyone else that you leave yourself in last place.
This is why I love my 370z. Extremely basic, has what you need and nothing more. No DI, no electronic steering, damping, "info" / 'Distraction'tainment. Yes the rear diff could be better and so could the road noise, but it's interesting that on one hand it gets horrible reviews for being behind the times, yet on the other hand people and reviewers complain about how newer vehicles lack steering/road feel/dynamics/consistency and predictability.
So many good points. I test drove a new SUV and the initial throttle response was incredibly jumpy. Made it feel like there was a ton of power available. When I stepped further into the throttle, there was significantly less response. I've experienced this with several vehicles made in the last decade. Too true about this fancy new headlights being more complicated to repair/replace and costing a fortune compared to their simple halogen counterparts. Case in point, 2018 Mitsubishi Mirage. Standard halogen headlights have a typical bulb that can be easily replaced. The optional HID headlights cost several hundred dollars to replace when one burns out, and they eventually will. Not to mention if the headlight housing is damaged, it's 3x the cost of the halogen unit. We're talking close to 4-digit replacement cost FOR A HEADLIGHT. All the fancy gadgets they put in cars nowadays will break and when they do, they'll cost a fortune to fix. A stripped cars is always going to be more reliable in the long run than a fully loaded version of the same car. Something to keep in mind.
the thing is that all those parts that cost a fortune to buy now will get cheaper in the future if possible. fuel injection and power windows were much more costly to produce and at first were only on 6-7 figure cars and cost a fortune to repair, now their found on 10-15k cars and are much cheaper to repair.

You've made me realize that, even though it looks really good and has good power and my primary impulse would be to buy this car in a heartbeat, I don't need a $50000 CAD Kia Stinger with two different expensive tires sizes in front and back. I'll turn down the two invitations for a test drive sent to me by Kia dealers and keep my very fine 2016 Hyundai Elantra Limited that'll be paid for next year, and doesn't need premium gasoline, doesn't have expensive Brembo brakes, and is reliable and comfortable to drive every day. Too bad Kia, but I'll put my hard earned money on a house instead. Great video !
I agree with your suggestion about test driving a car for as long as you can. The only car that I haven’t regretted buying was one that I test drove for several hours. The dealership left me alone and I learned a lot about the car. The car is still in my stable.

After just a month of ownership I've discovered that my $63,000 2018 Audi A6 has the world's most uncomfortable driver's seat. Too late, I'm stuck with it now. Rented a Nissan generic-mobile on a business trip last week and it was 1,000% more comfortable at half the price. Hated getting back into my Audi when I got home. Ugh.
sacuW9ep just buy most comfortable sparco and take Your car to workshop. This will fix it. There are also workshops wich can reshape your seat and leave it in "original looks".
That really sucks. Seats are a pretty subjective thing. Modern seats aren’t as good for long trips as they used to be just 10 years ago. I’d look into getting a Volvo if you want comfy seats.
I want the base model at the cheapest possible price. I don't want turbo , I don't want GDI , I don't want info screen , I don't want CVT ... I hate most new cars . You save 10.00 in gas and spend 1000.00 on repair .
James Brassill Bingo. And almost everything has a turbo and GDI for fuel economy purposes. It’s just a fact of life that you can squeeze better fuel efficiency out of GDI and turbo engines than NA port injection engines. Unless we’re talking 90s Civics and Toyotas of course lol. Those things got great gas mileage and were way ahead of their time.
@@DanUtley A tiny, turbocharged engine is great for the manufacturer to meet fuel economy standards. It isn't so great for a long-term owner who has to pay maintenance and repair costs when components go bad (as with all the other wow-factor components mentioned in the video) - costs that surpass the money saved in lower fuel expenses. Oh, yeah: warranty? Good luck with that.

When I wanted to buy my Honda accord 2016 before I went to the dealer I actually went to a car rental (Interprice) I rented the car for a weekend they didn't have the same exact car but the body style was the same just a lower trim level so I got the car and drove it for 500 miles Friday to Monday morning and I was completely sure that the car was good for me so I went ahead I bought the car... I know you won't be able to rent every car but in my case it worked out well
Tricked myself into "upgrading" to a Fusion sport lease after my first fusion. Learned everything you talked about in this video the hard way. Thank God it's over in a year. more people need to see this video.
For when your lease is up, I think you'll find that the payments on a used electric car will be less than a lease on a new car, and the insurance won't be as much, either. A 2016 Nissan Leaf SV or SL (they have the heat pump) has 100 miles of range (more like 60 in the winter), and a lot of them will be coming off lease next year. Once you drive electric, you'll never want to go back (unless you like engine noise).
A lot of good info here! The "quick acceleration" one is a trick I've noticed in cars going back 20 years. GM was great for doing this with their more underpowered cars. My parents just inherited my grandfather's Pontiac Torrent. I believe it's got the 3.1L V6, which makes about 160hp. My dad was telling me how "quick" it is. I drove it finally, and yeah, the thing leaps off the line, because the throttle is so touchy. 1/4 throttle might as well be full throttle. The thing feels like it's quick till about 30, then you realize there's really nothing left. On the other hand, my '00 Firebird with the LS1 V8 and automatic feels almost slow off the line with a normal throttle application, but once you get past half throttle, hold on!
Michael Smith GM did this again with the G8 in 2008-09. Making quick cars seem quick. Doesnt make sense. Putting lipstick on a pig. Ruined the driving experience a bit. Made driving in snow more of a chore than necessary. Built like shit anyway, which ruined the ownership experience. End of warranty? Adios.
On the flip side, there are some relatively powerful cars that feel like shit off the line because of the amount of throttle tip-in needed to get moving. So it ain't all that bad of a thing.
My 2004 Corvette LS1 is the same! The pedal is not touchy at all. I think GM did it to prevent idiots from spinning out and help the driver maintain control in slippery conditions.
I have a '97 Trans Am WS6 with 275/40/17 wheels. It looks nice but I definitely wouldn't want the side profile to be any less. The second I saw the car and drove it, I knew it was for me. Not my only car though, daily is a Subaru. Having multiple cars has advantages
I always thought, if I had the time, I should rent as close a version of the car in which I’m interested for a week or so. It may cost a couple hundred bucks, but that’s better than $30K. But, usually, I just go back to the dealer a couple of times. Great video, and I appreciate you bringing this level of common sense to a longtime car driver. It’s always good to hear this to keep it in the forefront (the RAM) of my memory banks vs. the deep recesses (the hard drive). I’m new to your videos and just starting to go through them. Good job on this video. It's taken me over a decade and multiple car purchases to really figure out what is most important to me in a car and to actually buy one that I love and want to keep for a long time.
You speak the absolute truth, and just earned yourself a new subscriber. There is nothing worse than being the "car guy" in your family or group of friends (I have the double whammy of being car guy and computer/tech guy) and have them constantly ask for buying advice, then watch as most ignore everything you've told them, or worse take your advice yet conveniently forget all the caveats you mentioned beforehand. My advice on car buying is simple: narrow your choices down to 2-3 different makes/models/trim levels, then read every print/online review and watch every RUclips review of the same models. Every reviewer is a bit different, but you'll notice the same strengths and weaknesses being mentioned in many or all of them. Armed with this knowledge, go out and do test drives of your own...add your own experience to what you learned beforehand and you should find the perfect (or near enough) car for you.
I get real satisfaction helping someone who knows little about cars make a sensible choice. It is astonishing how little research some people will do before spending such as massive amount of money. Of course some people do the exact opposite of what you recommend but that is just human nature.
Right Lane Hog Same here, but the worst is when they ask for advice, mention a certain model they have their eye on...then you tell them it isn't a good choice, give them specific reasons why and offer good alternatives. What do they do? Go out and buy the car they wanted in the first place and find out for themselves it wasn't the best choice for the price paid..smh.
My dad bought a Subaru Impreza because it was cheap, but he was too emotional or something (I and my family couldn't talk him out of it) and just had to buy a $5000 sport package. He doesn't even know how to use the infotainment that got upgraded to a bigger screen.
First started following your channel about a year ago. Got hooked from the e92 M3 review! Great points in this video. More "honest" car sales folks should come out about the interesting practices used during sales. I've always been curious of the mechanical lifetime for those auto start-stop features. Love the channel man! Keep it coming.
One thing I'd like to hear your take on is bringing someone with you who is not invested in buying a car. If you are emotionally invested in a car that you've always wanted since you were a kid, like a VW GTI, bringing a person with you who knows cars but is not invested in buying said car could help you from making a rash or bonehead decision.
Excellent advice.........good luck changing my mind when it comes to cars. The good thing for me is I have to pick from what my Wife also likes. That eliminates 95% of the over the top cars I would like to own. That works both ways my wife loves 3 wheelers. I don't.
I got one last August. I've always wanted one since I was a teenager. I bought a 2017 GTI with the LSD+Performance pack. I avoided the emotional buy by having my girlfriend come with. She's really shrewd with her money and enjoys cars and was a great help keeping my head on straight.

You are perfectly within your rights, in fact you SHOULD demand that they give you the car for an extended drive prior to laying down tens of thousands of your hard earned dollars. You want to hear every creak, every noise, every crack or thump when you drive. On a used vehicle this can tell you lots about any issues it may be hiding, on a new vehicle this can be indicative of future problems.

Really great informative video. I bought a 2018 Honda LX back in March knowing that I wasn’t going to get Apple car play or bigger tires. A greater deal and more value beats out features for me. My dad even told me about how the 19’ tires would cost me more in the long run and wasn’t to have a smoother ride than the base 17’ when we were at the dealership. It might sound frugal to not spend the extra dough on features, but at the end of the the day the base model had everything I needed for a car that got me to where I needed to be. Edit: spelling
Great video, Mark. As more of an enthusiast, I understand these points that you're making. With this being a video about things to avoid or be careful of, I think it would also be helpful to create a Fine Print Series video on car features that truly add value, and aren't just gimmicky or a money pit. In other words, after sifting through all the specs, what should the average person be looking for? What is an ideal ride quality? What features give a more direct steering feel? Should I get a turbo 4, or just go to a V6 if I'm looking for more power (250-300 HP)? Should I consider the overall weight of the vehicle? I think something like this would make for an interesting lesson- both for the average consumer as well as intermediate & advanced drivers. Best regards.
Great video as always! I'm looking for a used car and I know what I am between a few models. It's amusing when people get sucked into buying what they don't need. At the same time I feel bad, but a lot just don't do their research!
Also, it's important to use a poker face at car dealerships, don't get visibly excited over a car if you're near the sales representative. You want to keep them guessing and you want to have the upper hand in the psychological game dealers use to trick people. Look out for other tricky tactics, like when you're negotiating a price for the vehicle and the rep. "has to go discuss it with the manager". They have that maneuver pre-planned to make you think they're giving you a better deal "because they like you". They're slick sales people, never test drive a car and then buy it right then and there either, make them wait a few days.
And this is why you are the best car reviewer on the interwebs. You can look past all the BS fluff that manufactures add to wow us. Love your channel, keep doing what you do.

Average car buyer doesn't care enough about the car - they'd learn nothing from a longer test drive anyway. They consider cars to be like refrigerators. They don't really think about it at all until something breaks. Either that or they are emotional, so excited at the thought of a new car that all information is positive information .
I once met a car salesman, who didn't let me drive the car. He put me on the passenger seat and drove off to the mountains with a huge smile on his face. That road holding and speed was out of this world. He sold me the tuned "Ford Escort RS Cosworth" before I even had a chance to step behind the wheel. Later he told me, that he is a race driver. 20 years later, I still have the car and love it.
This video is a rare gem. So true. I need to get smaller rims and higher profile tires for my car. I have the top tier trim and it only comes with the ridiculous 21 inch rims and skinny rubber that doesn't even look organic on the car. Too big. And it's an SUV!!! I want little more rubber and cushion, it's not a track car! Guess what, I curbed them many times cause the rim is what hits the curb first. And I have a bulge on a side wall. Been thinking about this lately. All the tech that no one really wanted that we all have to pay too much for that makes the car heavier and more complicated and does t even work well. (I-sight, infotainment...) everything going turbo, we get sold that we want stuff instead of what we actually want being sold to us. There is little margin in dependability...
It's a vicious circle my friend! Customers are part of the problem. Manufacturers are spending a lot of money asking people what they want in their car (through survey).
Rent the car you want to buy! At least for 2 days. BMW and Audi will often let you drive one of their cars for the weekend. The 2001 Jeep I am driving now the dealer let us drive it for 1 week before we decided to buy it. Most normal high volume cars you can do this. Forget the long test drive on low volume or limited addition cars. Renting is still an option.
Darek M, Not me. I do not feel obligated at all. I buy the car that I like from the dealer that I like. Some dealers have liberal test drives but are horrible to work with. Other dealers have around the block test drives with the salesperson but are fantastic to work with. Usually the best dealers have the most liberal test drives. The Subaru dealer on Li Ny where I purchased my 2013 BRZ (Scion FRS twin) would not let my drive it until it was paid for. This was mid 2012 when the cars where all but unattainable. They were wonderful people to work with. I test drove the FRS at an Toyota dealer then purchased the BRZ with NO test drive. Three miles on the car when I took delivery.
Herbert, The 2001 Jeep Cherokee Limited in my Photo. It has 305,000 miles on it. It is my daily driver. I would drive it cross country tomorrow. It has NEVER left me stranded. It has driven through two feet of fresh snow with open diffs at both ends. Easily the most reliable, durable and cheap to repair automobile I have ever owned. I have owned 7 Toyotas , 4 Hondas and three Subarus. My 2013 Brz had major problems at 49,000 miles. Yes I still bought it.
The most recent vehicle purchase I made was to replace my totaled vehicle, I ended up using the rental car to basically test drive the vehicle I was looking at buying for 2 weeks before I made my purchase. I learned a ton about the vehicle I liked both good and bad due to this and am very happy with the choice I made because of the ability to actually use the vehicle as my own for two weeks prior to purchasing. Granted the actual vehicle I own is not the one I rented but it has the options I wanted and non of the fluff because of the whole experience

I agree with this 100%. I ended up in a car I wasn't looking for, because of a time crunch. Luckily it is a good car, but it doesn't have the performance I want. So I'm stuck with the option of paying it down faster to get something different, or modding and voiding warranties. That desire of obtaining something new definitely is blinding.

That is why I bought a mint, low miles Lexus LS430 for $13k. No nav, no crazy electronics... just simple buttons, V8, quality materials and zillion mile reliability.
2005 "base" LS430, silver, 18" wheels. 65k miles when I bought it. Paid $12.5k + $1k for timing belt and water pump (regular maintenance item that was never changed).
Its the honesty and your sarcasm that gets me watching your videos. You take such an honest approach to car buying that 99% of the car buying public need to see when they look at cars. You are not afraid of pissing off manufacturers and thats refreshing.
Always enjoy watching your videos, someone who speaks the truth about cars and also has a great sense of humor. Great video about what to look for when purchasing a new vehicle spot on about seeing people upside down after purchasing one I see it all the time.
This is why I exhaustively research and test drive to the point of ridiculousness. I want my sales person to be annoyed with me that means I’m not getting bamboozled. And often base models or one trim up from base is the one to get, the best value proposition. The top trim can easily dazzle you and you’ll want to have all those things for “only $5000” more but I prefer to enjoy minimalism.
Great vid modern day cars are just throw away items like iphones best way to describe them. Wouldn't want to keep any of these tech infestations for longer than 3 years. The best test drives are the ones you can go on by yourself. I recently was given the Keys to a Kia Stinger GT2 because I had bought a car in the past from the same dealer and the sales manager remembered me. It was great - no pressure and no time limit. Gives you a chance to test out all the tech and to just be quiet and listen to how the car sounds without anybody talking or anything. I understand this may not be possible or cases but never hurts to ask.
After watching this video I'm even happier with my decision to buy my mazda 3 hatchback sport. Base trim has no fancy head lights, don't have to deal with huge wheels, no blind spot monitoring to worry about if someone breaks off my side mirror, no oversized brakes. You guys get the idea. The only things that do concern me is the direct injection, and the camera based crash prevention system

Yup me too. When I go check out a car I’ve already done a lot of research. I always know more than the salesperson and often correct them about the car they are trying to sell me.
Same here, I usually know everything I need to know and made my decision based on my knowledge of particular car. So going into dealership I know I want to buy it. Only thing left to take care of at the dealership is, test drive and what kind of deal I can make and the financial stuff. Buying a car is not same as buying candy in a candy shop. I have no problems walking into candy shop and not knowing what I want and rely on store people suggesting what candy to get. Dealerships are different and too many people walk in there, clueless as to what they really want.

I've been a sales person for Lexus for almost two months. I am as transparent as a clean window. I feel no urgency to sell anyone a car. I answer questions, inform, and relax. If they want the car, I can help them in the buying process. If they don't want the car, I thank them for their time and wish them well!

I will be honest with you, informed salesman will always sell less then these who know less. I thought the same and always gave honest answer to customers. Some will appreciate it, but most will not. Sad thing is everything comes down to ur paycheck vs honestly. Tough choice when you have bills to pay. Not saying you lie to sell the car but lot of times when you inform customers things get complicated. Good luck with sales I was in sales for 6years and made top sales in 2different dealerships.
I will often ask the salesman for their pitch when I'm on the fence about a car. Sell it to me. Tell me why its a good car to buy. This actually throws off more salespeople than it should. The good ones know their cars and bring up great points of how the car would compliment my driving needs.
If a sales guy stammers and says "Let me show you all the features on the infotainment." I reply "I hate touch screens while driving." If all the car's controls are in the touch screen menus, including HVAC, a good salesman should tell me "then this might not be the car for you". If instead they try to convince me how great touchscreens are, then I am likely walking.

That is why everyone should do their homework before even set foot at the dealership. Technology allows us to get that information easily! If you're prepared, you'll know what model you need, which trim is the best for you and if it's within your budget. The test drive should just be a formality to confirm your choice.
I really don't understand this at all, especially during today's times when the internet gives us all the information regarding vehicles we aim towards. When walking into the dealership you already should know everything about the vehicle inside out (better than any dealer), what most of the buttons do, all of its packages, and what you want exactly. Your only words should be is to tell the seller to be quiet and set you up a test drive. That's it. It's so simple. I view dealers as maggots that have mouths for one purpose, which is to fuck you over any way they can. As soon as you realize this you'd know that anything they recommend just reverse it 180 and you'll most likely be looking at a better deal.

2lazeblue I don’t own either, but I hear where you’re coming from. Although going by all the recent quality reports, both Hyundai & Kia have come a long way in terms of overall dependability. And both brands sell extremely well. I’ve been a Honda guy my entire life, and bought my first Subaru (Forester XT) last August, so I can’t make a fair long-term assessment yet. But so far no complaints.

True. Few are willing to tell buyers what they're getting into, after the purchase (because reviewers fear jeopardizing their access to a steady supply of new cars to review).
Case in point: My mother who drives slower than a turtle, just leased a 440i xdrive. Aside from being a BMW, she said she just liked the color.... I'm pretty sure she would have been just as happy with finding a similar specced 430i instead of being upsold 13k of an engine and performance packages she would never use to it's full potential.
That's depressing when there's folks who'd kill for that engine and have to make do with like a 1.8 diesel

It has been an incredible car, there hasn’t been a day where I said “wow I wish I had Xenon headlights and bigger brakes because of all of those track days that I totally take my car to all of the time! Agree with this strategy. In my case a Turo-mediated weekend with the car convinced me to make the purchase. But I got waaaay more time with it than I ever would have on a test drive.
Thats a good idea. Instead of being limited to 20 minutes of test driving from a dealership, why not spend a small amount to have it for a whole day?

You have no idea how much I HATE some of the new technology that unfortunately is trending in the automotive industry but also how “gimmicky” cars are becoming nowadays. I am 100% a car fanatic and most times I can and will find a lot of good things to say just about any car I’ve driven. Good point Gabriel. I'm amazed how upset people get if a vehicle doesn't have a push button start! My wife's 370Z had it but to me putting a key in is no big deal. Toyota trucks get bashed all the time for being dated? What the Hell is dated with a twin cammed V8? No direct injection complexities I guess. It seems a lot of Folks want a new platform every 2-3 years before all the bugs are worked out. These things are often financed for 6 years. Oh well........makes for good reading!

Unless you're purchasing a high performance vehicle, out of warranty, your maintenance/repair costs should be negligible. Most decent cars require little to no routine maintenance for the first year, and just routine care after that. Granted, if you drive like an ass you may end up spending a small fortune on tires for those fancy 20 inch wheels, but that's a personal choice.

Actually, this topic is so true! 5 months ago, I was about to get my first car. I would want to get 3-4 years old Mazda3 MT from the dealer(did not think to look for a private market at that time). I made an appointment in advance after I look at the inventory online. When I arrived at the dealership, as usual, he showed me what I want, and finally, take a test drive. We drove through highway for 15 minutes, 5 minutes city driving. I did not try to accelerate or turn hard. I did not know it feels so precise to drive. At that time, I was not yet able to drive a stick smoothly, so maybe it affects how I was not able to dig into the performance. Fast forward, after we returned to the dealership. the Sales ass. said "so, do you like the car?" I answer "yea, pretty good". He replied, " do u wanna talk number?" , I knot right away.
on the dealing table, we came back and forth... as you know, there is kinda sales game, the sales go to the manager office and made you wait lol. what a joke, they tried to wear you off. He is a nice person but sadly, this is how the car sales industry works. So, since I don't have experience in car buying, I am still very young to this (my family is out of town, so no one came together with me to the dealer), I was easily "hypnotized" to sign my signature on that piece of paper!
I drove the car off the lot with an instant happiness until the 3rd month, and realized I bought a car that is way too expensive+ loan with pretty high-interest rate + new. What a huge mistake in my financial life. I could've got a more affordable vehicle that I pay in cash, more performance, drive as good as this and no payment nor interest. Too bad, I can't turn the clock. Now, I am selling it at 15% lost. I tried to sell it privately, but it is too new in my city, thus makes it difficult to sell. I ended up selling it at the Auction with a slightly higher offer than dealers.
Takeaway:
1. Have your mind clear before planning any major purchase
2. DO NOT get emotional with the vehicle you test drive!
3. for first-time buyer, have someone or family member to guide you to the dealership.
4. Take your time and prioritize cash or at least finance with no interest
This is sadly what sellers are trained to do. My grandfather taugh me at an early age sellers and politicans should never be trusted at any capacity. Always check where your limit is financially before walking into the sharktank. In Sweden where i live you cant finans the full amount, you need to pay a minimum of 20% in cash. I have never experienced pushy sellers when ive been at dealerships. in Sweden you are alone on the test drive, the seller is never with you which helps a lot.
I think most of us have had an experience similer to this. Especially in our youth. Great advice! Let us not make the same mistake twice.
I like your rules and I would say not just for first time buyers have someone with you. Even if it's your 2nd, 3rd, or 4th car always bring someone because it distracts the salesman. they have to try to sell to two people rather than just one. and your friend and family member can play the straight man and talk down the features, keep things grounded. I like to bring my father with me even if I don't live at home anymore because he is a surly old man, and a energetic adrenaline junkie. So the salesman has to try to appease both of us.
* one last tip spend the majority of the test drive with the radio off. it'll let you listen to the car and it'll make awkward silence that the salesman will try to fill and that's when they slip. also ask a lot of rapid fire technical questions that you know the answer to.

This is why I like base models of most cars. Personally I think, there's everything I need in the base model of most cars out there.
In my opinion the more add on items just means more things that need to be maintained and repaired.
But for those who love the add on accessories that come as options on the base model and standard on the higher model range wait until that new model gets older as they depreciate in value and you can buy it at a lower price as I have found that those who can afford to order the optioned out model usually trade them in within a year or two while they are leasing them and whereas they initially drove it off the lot for $8,000 in a year or two they're down to $5,000 - $6,000 depending on milage and condition.

Underrated comment. Definitely a must have when buying new car. I've rented and test driven few cars with electronic brake, it left weird feeling when parking car on uneven ground. First gear + manual handbrake = car will stay where its supposed to be even if something goes wrong.

Actually, a big part of the reason I got my current car is the manual handbrake. Just the analog feel in general is a huge selling point for older cars, imo.
I don't think I generally have this problem when it comes to cars, but this is extremely good advice. I have always done way more research than necessary before even attempting to buy a car or even look into one. Granted I am a BMW guy so all the quirks w/ the previous E chassis, F chassis and now the G chassis I'm well aware of. Not many do.
Knowing your cars generally gives you an upper hand when it comes to visiting new dealerships. You would know extremely quickly when a salesman is pitching something that is generally overblown. I love to test this with dealerships or brands I don't generally visit. It's funny to see their reaction when they realize I know more about the car than they do.
With the internet and stuff today, it isn't hard to gauge cars way before you even start shopping. Make a list of what you want, especially price and start slimming that list down before you even visit any dealership. If you are nervous, bring a family member that have done this before and they would guide you. Obviously much easier if you come from a family that love cars and goes through their leases quick.
Then, also be aware of the dealership and what they are attempting to do when you come in. Some of them are... rather sketchy.
"It's not all that special" Truer words never spoken. Coming back to this video to watch again after 2 years, this originally came out 1 month after I had leased my 2018 Audi S4. I really thought the car would be more fun than it was - once I started to live with it, I got tired of it really fast and while it is certainly a nice, capable car, I basically just tossed it to my wife to drive. I then went out and got a 2019 Civic Type R for my daily which is way more of what I want and I had confidence paying the 36k for the car in cash because I had gone through the motions with several other cars including the Audi to eventually be confident in what I want in a long term car that I hold for 10+ years. That goes with another key point of the video - identifying what you want for that specific car. I discovered this 5 years ago when I got my E92 M3 - it's the first of my fun cars I've owned that I have kept for more than a couple years, because for me personally it's a ton of what I want, short of a 911. I went through quite a few cars before that looking for something I could hold on to and enjoy for a long period of time. Nowadays with the cost of where new cars are, you need to be extremely careful and precise about what you are looking for otherwise you are definitely more likely to get burned, and in a bad way. Again, the video captures this at the end talking about being into a car for 20, 30, or 40k on a loan or something.

This is why I say if you have a car that's already mechanically sound and cheap to maintain and you enjoy driving it, then keep it. I've had my 2000 TL in the family since new and it still runs like a clock and is so enjoyable to drive and unless gas prices become un-realistically expensive then i'll keep the car for as long as it can run.

Regarding LED lights: AFAIK, maybe I'm wrong, but the TUV will require a replacement if only one of the many LEDs in the assembly fails, because the assembly has been cleared with its light intensity property and if one LED fails, it doesn't fulfill that anymore.

I've loved my 5000$ 2000 Toyota Solara SLE V6 in black. That thing was loaded with everything, unkillable, comfy, fun and it was a bargain when I bought it in 2010.
Had to sell it for cash due to school and stuff. I regret that to this day.
I generally do a of research so I don't have a "bad" purchase. I did point and pick a 500 Abarth in the showroom once when the dealer came back with a trade in value $1000 less than I paid for the car I was trading in a few years ago. Driving the Abarth home I about had a heart attack looking for the A/C button - it had one. Worst car I ever bought was a used 2001 Civic 5-speed coupe, 1.7L. That thing was so slow and gutlass it wasn't even safe on the highway, and I had bought it as a commuter. Got rid of it pretty quick.
Best car purchase:
Nissan 350Z. 10 years and over 175,000 miles of pure joy. It still ran amazing when I sold it.
Worst Car Purchase:
(Besides a Mustang GT that was a total lemon)
Honda CR-Z. It felt zippy during the test drive but after the first year you notice how incredibly slow the car is. After intake, headers, exhaust and a tune, it still feels incredibly lethargic. Hoping to sell it early next year and finally get a Porsche.

The Mrs. has decided to buy a new car. What has been nice, she had taken her car in for service and since we have a good relationship with the service manager, she has been able to take a car home and drive it for a day or three. This way we both get to drive it and put it through some tests and experiences. She had gotten to drive five different types of vehicle and it's been fun. She will be buying a new car next month. As a side note, any car I would buy has to have real controls for the HVAC systems and a volume knob.
So much useless tech on cars. Worst part the companies don't ever update their computers so you'll end up with a huge screen and laggy interface down the road. Also not being able to change the a/c with a knob but instead use a screen
They have to add stuff to justify padding the price. With 600+ billion deficit annually, or missed payments, the US government needs to collect more in taxes from goods sold and from higher wages. To get this, they over-regulate production to make everything expensive. You also got to make rich men richer to keep them rabble rousing poor poorer. These wars costs money dude. China and Russia want us in these wars so we burn out and cannot afford to fight them when they begin to colonize the places we depend on for resources. The rich send production to China bc they have fun either way, since we are all poorer in the end, regardless of which countries are superpowers. Hence, Warrent Buffet, supposedly mr. cautious, is heavily invested in Chinese cars vs Tesla.
Oh lord my brothers girlfriends Honda Civic Hatch is a 2018 model with just about 70% of everything in the touch screen. Volume and fan speeds and such. I hate it so much. My 2016 4Runner has the massive knobs for literally everything so you know what your doing and can do it in a instant.
Thankfully I do belive near the end of the last gen Civic and the current gen they brought back the knobs.

Great advices. I ignored all of them when I bought my first car. Went to Opel dealership because I heard that Opel cars are reliable. Quick sales pitch, even quicker 10 minutes long test drive and that was it. Back then I had 0 knowledge about cars. Best car ever! Super comfortable for 4 people (not so much if there are 5-7 people), very practical. Not a single car I've driven in last decade could match it. Its 13 years old and still running fine, though there is rust in few places. I've been looking at new cars lately, all of them are inferior in every way to good old Opel Zafira B, even newer models of same car are not as good as old one.
I drove my friends Mazda for 5 days on a road trip, avoided 2 major collisions, 1 near miss also did 1 high speed chase.
I was sold, after that road trip, I immediately went to a dealer to buy one for myself.

I find it easiest to inspect a car when I’m not buying it. Family always asks me to look at them and find info and what they should get. When it’s not mine I’m not emotionally attached so I can logically look at it and see and REMEMBER everything I’m supposed to inspect.

Great video. I couldn't imagine walking into a dealership with "an open mind". That seems like the worst possible thing to do. When i bought my 2015 Mazda6, i looked at the dealers inventory online first and narrowed down to a specific trim with maybe a few color options. I walked into the dealership knowimg exactly what i wanted and thats what i got. In all my years of car buying, ive never had a sales person tey to upselling me on trim or options.
I tell the dealer that I'm going to need at least half a day with your tester, alone with no sales guy with me. If they refuse, just walk out. Also, I tell them straight up that I'm going to test drive all comparables in my class so closing the deal today is not going to happen. Some dealers get irritated by that. You think I'm going to spend 40-50k and not test drive the competition. Lol
If they get irritated because they can't trick you and have to compete, you know you don't want to deal with them. Good test.

DZ the dealer has no regard for their customers. Once you sign that lease/loan, you are screwed. Not sure if you noticed but a dealership will treat you differently before you made a purchase and after you made a purchase. Meaning once you bought, you can't back out and they no longer give a shit about you. Learn to think for yourself and don't be so concerned for everyone else that you leave yourself in last place.
This is why I love my 370z. Extremely basic, has what you need and nothing more. No DI, no electronic steering, damping, "info" / 'Distraction'tainment. Yes the rear diff could be better and so could the road noise, but it's interesting that on one hand it gets horrible reviews for being behind the times, yet on the other hand people and reviewers complain about how newer vehicles lack steering/road feel/dynamics/consistency and predictability.

So many good points. I test drove a new SUV and the initial throttle response was incredibly jumpy. Made it feel like there was a ton of power available. When I stepped further into the throttle, there was significantly less response. I've experienced this with several vehicles made in the last decade.
Too true about this fancy new headlights being more complicated to repair/replace and costing a fortune compared to their simple halogen counterparts. Case in point, 2018 Mitsubishi Mirage. Standard halogen headlights have a typical bulb that can be easily replaced. The optional HID headlights cost several hundred dollars to replace when one burns out, and they eventually will. Not to mention if the headlight housing is damaged, it's 3x the cost of the halogen unit. We're talking close to 4-digit replacement cost FOR A HEADLIGHT.
All the fancy gadgets they put in cars nowadays will break and when they do, they'll cost a fortune to fix. A stripped cars is always going to be more reliable in the long run than a fully loaded version of the same car. Something to keep in mind.
the thing is that all those parts that cost a fortune to buy now will get cheaper in the future if possible. fuel injection and power windows were much more costly to produce and at first were only on 6-7 figure cars and cost a fortune to repair, now their found on 10-15k cars and are much cheaper to repair.
Depends on how long you want to keep it. Also walk over to the service department at the dealer and ask what common issues are. Or even find a local garage specialist with the previous make & model of the car YOU’RE interested in buying.

You've made me realize that, even though it looks really good and has good power and my primary impulse would be to buy this car in a heartbeat, I don't need a $50000 CAD Kia Stinger with two different expensive tires sizes in front and back. I'll turn down the two invitations for a test drive sent to me by Kia dealers and keep my very fine 2016 Hyundai Elantra Limited that'll be paid for next year, and doesn't need premium gasoline, doesn't have expensive Brembo brakes, and is reliable and comfortable to drive every day. Too bad Kia, but I'll put my hard earned money on a house instead. Great video !

After just a month of ownership I've discovered that my $63,000 2018 Audi A6 has the world's most uncomfortable driver's seat. Too late, I'm stuck with it now. Rented a Nissan generic-mobile on a business trip last week and it was 1,000% more comfortable at half the price. Hated getting back into my Audi when I got home. Ugh.

James Brassill Bingo. And almost everything has a turbo and GDI for fuel economy purposes. It’s just a fact of life that you can squeeze better fuel efficiency out of GDI and turbo engines than NA port injection engines.
Unless we’re talking 90s Civics and Toyotas of course lol. Those things got great gas mileage and were way ahead of their time.

It isn't so great for a long-term owner who has to pay maintenance and repair costs when components go bad (as with all the other wow-factor components mentioned in the video) - costs that surpass the money saved in lower fuel expenses. Oh, yeah: warranty? Good luck with that.

When I wanted to buy my Honda accord 2016 before I went to the dealer I actually went to a car rental (Interprice) I rented the car for a weekend they didn't have the same exact car but the body style was the same just a lower trim level so I got the car and drove it for 500 miles Friday to Monday morning and I was completely sure that the car was good for me so I went ahead I bought the car... I know you won't be able to rent every car but in my case it worked out well
Tricked myself into "upgrading" to a Fusion sport lease after my first fusion. Learned everything you talked about in this video the hard way. Thank God it's over in a year. more people need to see this video.
For when your lease is up, I think you'll find that the payments on a used electric car will be less than a lease on a new car, and the insurance won't be as much, either. A 2016 Nissan Leaf SV or SL (they have the heat pump) has 100 miles of range (more like 60 in the winter), and a lot of them will be coming off lease next year. Once you drive electric, you'll never want to go back (unless you like engine noise).
A lot of good info here! The "quick acceleration" one is a trick I've noticed in cars going back 20 years. GM was great for doing this with their more underpowered cars. My parents just inherited my grandfather's Pontiac Torrent. I believe it's got the 3.1L V6, which makes about 160hp. My dad was telling me how "quick" it is. I drove it finally, and yeah, the thing leaps off the line, because the throttle is so touchy. 1/4 throttle might as well be full throttle. The thing feels like it's quick till about 30, then you realize there's really nothing left. On the other hand, my '00 Firebird with the LS1 V8 and automatic feels almost slow off the line with a normal throttle application, but once you get past half throttle, hold on!
Michael Smith GM did this again with the G8 in 2008-09. Making quick cars seem quick. Doesnt make sense. Putting lipstick on a pig. Ruined the driving experience a bit. Made driving in snow more of a chore than necessary. Built like shit anyway, which ruined the ownership experience. End of warranty? Adios.
On the flip side, there are some relatively powerful cars that feel like shit off the line because of the amount of throttle tip-in needed to get moving. So it ain't all that bad of a thing.
My 2004 Corvette LS1 is the same! The pedal is not touchy at all. I think GM did it to prevent idiots from spinning out and help the driver maintain control in slippery conditions.
I have a '97 Trans Am WS6 with 275/40/17 wheels. It looks nice but I definitely wouldn't want the side profile to be any less. The second I saw the car and drove it, I knew it was for me. Not my only car though, daily is a Subaru. Having multiple cars has advantages
I always thought, if I had the time, I should rent as close a version of the car in which I’m interested for a week or so. It may cost a couple hundred bucks, but that’s better than $30K. But, usually, I just go back to the dealer a couple of times. Great video, and I appreciate you bringing this level of common sense to a longtime car driver. It’s always good to hear this to keep it in the forefront (the RAM) of my memory banks vs. the deep recesses (the hard drive).

Good job on this video. It's taken me over a decade and multiple car purchases to really figure out what is most important to me in a car and to actually buy one that I love and want to keep for a long time.
You speak the absolute truth, and just earned yourself a new subscriber. There is nothing worse than being the "car guy" in your family or group of friends (I have the double whammy of being car guy and computer/tech guy) and have them constantly ask for buying advice, then watch as most ignore everything you've told them, or worse take your advice yet conveniently forget all the caveats you mentioned beforehand. My advice on car buying is simple: narrow your choices down to 2-3 different makes/models/trim levels, then read every print/online review and watch every RUclips review of the same models. Every reviewer is a bit different, but you'll notice the same strengths and weaknesses being mentioned in many or all of them. Armed with this knowledge, go out and do test drives of your own...add your own experience to what you learned beforehand and you should find the perfect (or near enough) car for you.
I get real satisfaction helping someone who knows little about cars make a sensible choice. It is astonishing how little research some people will do before spending such as massive amount of money. Of course some people do the exact opposite of what you recommend but that is just human nature.

What do they do? Go out and buy the car they wanted in the first place and find out for themselves it wasn't the best choice for the price paid..smh.

One thing I'd like to hear your take on is bringing someone with you who is not invested in buying a car. If you are emotionally invested in a car that you've always wanted since you were a kid, like a VW GTI, bringing a person with you who knows cars but is not invested in buying said car could help you from making a rash or bonehead decision.

I got one last August. I've always wanted one since I was a teenager. I bought a 2017 GTI with the LSD+Performance pack. I avoided the emotional buy by having my girlfriend come with. She's really shrewd with her money and enjoys cars and was a great help keeping my head on straight.

By the way, I forgot to add in my previous comment that this video should be mandatory for any inexperienced car buyer. Everything said in here is true. You are perfectly within your rights, in fact you SHOULD demand that they give you the car for an extended drive prior to laying down tens of thousands of your hard earned dollars. You want to hear every creak, every noise, every crack or thump when you drive. On a used vehicle this can tell you lots about any issues it may be hiding, on a new vehicle this can be indicative of future problems.

Really great informative video. I bought a 2018 Honda LX back in March knowing that I wasn’t going to get Apple car play or bigger tires. A greater deal and more value beats out features for me. My dad even told me about how the 19’ tires would cost me more in the long run and wasn’t to have a smoother ride than the base 17’ when we were at the dealership. It might sound frugal to not spend the extra dough on features, but at the end of the the day the base model had everything I needed for a car that got me to where I needed to be.

Great video, Mark. As more of an enthusiast, I understand these points that you're making. With this being a video about things to avoid or be careful of, I think it would also be helpful to create a Fine Print Series video on car features that truly add value, and aren't just gimmicky or a money pit. In other words, after sifting through all the specs, what should the average person be looking for? What is an ideal ride quality? What features give a more direct steering feel? Should I get a turbo 4, or just go to a V6 if I'm looking for more power (250-300 HP)? Should I consider the overall weight of the vehicle? I think something like this would make for an interesting lesson- both for the average consumer as well as intermediate & advanced drivers. Best regards.
Great video as always! I'm looking for a used car and I know what I am between a few models. It's amusing when people get sucked into buying what they don't need. At the same time I feel bad, but a lot just don't do their research!
Also, it's important to use a poker face at car dealerships, don't get visibly excited over a car if you're near the sales representative. You want to keep them guessing and you want to have the upper hand in the psychological game dealers use to trick people. Look out for other tricky tactics, like when you're negotiating a price for the vehicle and the rep. "has to go discuss it with the manager". They have that maneuver pre-planned to make you think they're giving you a better deal "because they like you". They're slick sales people, never test drive a car and then buy it right then and there either, make them wait a few days.
I think you may be the best car review channel, period. Honest, skeptical, and realistic opinions on vehicles are hard to come by these days.

Average car buyer doesn't care enough about the car - they'd learn nothing from a longer test drive anyway. They consider cars to be like refrigerators. They don't really think about it at all until something breaks.
Either that or they are emotional, so excited at the thought of a new car that all information is positive information .
I once met a car salesman, who didn't let me drive the car. He put me on the passenger seat and drove off to the mountains with a huge smile on his face. That road holding and speed was out of this world. He sold me the tuned "Ford Escort RS Cosworth" before I even had a chance to step behind the wheel. Later he told me, that he is a race driver. 20 years later, I still have the car and love it.
This video is a rare gem. So true. I need to get smaller rims and higher profile tires for my car. I have the top tier trim and it only comes with the ridiculous 21 inch rims and skinny rubber that doesn't even look organic on the car. Too big. And it's an SUV!!! I want little more rubber and cushion, it's not a track car! Guess what, I curbed them many times cause the rim is what hits the curb first. And I have a bulge on a side wall. We need more videos like this and more people to get educated about what they are buying. THANK YOU!!!
Been thinking about this lately. All the tech that no one really wanted that we all have to pay too much for that makes the car heavier and more complicated and does t even work well. (I-sight, infotainment...) everything going turbo, we get sold that we want stuff instead of what we actually want being sold to us. There is little margin in dependability...
It's a vicious circle my friend! Customers are part of the problem. Manufacturers are spending a lot of money asking people what they want in their car (through survey).
Rent the car you want to buy! At least for 2 days. BMW and Audi will often let you drive one of their cars for the weekend. The 2001 Jeep I am driving now the dealer let us drive it for 1 week before we decided to buy it. Most normal high volume cars you can do this. Forget the long test drive on low volume or limited addition cars. Renting is still an option.
Darek M, Not me. I do not feel obligated at all. I buy the car that I like from the dealer that I like. Some dealers have liberal test drives but are horrible to work with. Other dealers have around the block test drives with the salesperson but are fantastic to work with. Usually the best dealers have the most liberal test drives.
The Subaru dealer on Li Ny where I purchased my 2013 BRZ (Scion FRS twin) would not let my drive it until it was paid for. This was mid 2012 when the cars where all but unattainable. They were wonderful people to work with. I test drove the FRS at an Toyota dealer then purchased the BRZ with NO test drive. Three miles on the car when I took delivery.

Herbert, The 2001 Jeep Cherokee Limited in my Photo. It has 305,000 miles on it. It is my daily driver. I would drive it cross country tomorrow. It has NEVER left me stranded. It has driven through two feet of fresh snow with open diffs at both ends. Easily the most reliable, durable and cheap to repair automobile I have ever owned. I have owned 7 Toyotas , 4 Hondas and three Subarus. My 2013 Brz had major problems at 49,000 miles.

The most recent vehicle purchase I made was to replace my totaled vehicle, I ended up using the rental car to basically test drive the vehicle I was looking at buying for 2 weeks before I made my purchase. I learned a ton about the vehicle I liked both good and bad due to this and am very happy with the choice I made because of the ability to actually use the vehicle as my own for two weeks prior to purchasing. Granted the actual vehicle I own is not the one I rented but it has the options I wanted and non of the fluff because of the whole experience

At that time, I was naive and didn't 'get' your sarcasm and cynical approach (I was in my teens) but few years later, i've really grown to appreciate your transparency of addressing the harsh reality of owning/living with certain cars in the real world. I agree with this 100%. I ended up in a car I wasn't looking for, because of a time crunch. Luckily it is a good car, but it doesn't have the performance I want. So I'm stuck with the option of paying it down faster to get something different, or modding and voiding warranties. That desire of obtaining something new definitely is blinding.
You sir are a gentleman and a scholar. I've learned so much through your channel than anywhere else. I hope your channel gets more subscribers (fingers crossed). But the reality is that people aren't interested in the "Why" they just want to know "What". However, you will grow steadily and more organically as opposed to others which are quite rare these days. That why I bought the 2016 corolla base trim, manual transmission. Not many features, steel rims.

I rented one a while back and couldn't believe it had forward collision warning, lane departure assist, and adaptive cruise control.

That is why I bought a mint, low miles Lexus LS430 for $13k. No nav, no crazy electronics... just simple buttons, V8, quality materials and zillion mile reliability.
2005 "base" LS430, silver, 18" wheels. 65k miles when I bought it. Paid $12.5k + $1k for timing belt and water pump (regular maintenance item that was never changed).
Get a Dacia or Lada.

Always enjoy watching your videos, someone who speaks the truth about cars and also has a great sense of humor. Great video about what to look for when purchasing a new vehicle spot on about seeing people upside down after purchasing one I see it all the time.
This is why I exhaustively research and test drive to the point of ridiculousness. I want my sales person to be annoyed with me that means I’m not getting bamboozled. And often base models or one trim up from base is the one to get, the best value proposition. The top trim can easily dazzle you and you’ll want to have all those things for “only $5000” more but I prefer to enjoy minimalism.

Great vid modern day cars are just throw away items like iphones best way to describe them. Wouldn't want to keep any of these tech infestations for longer than 3 years. The best test drives are the ones you can go on by yourself. I recently was given the Keys to a Kia Stinger GT2 because I had bought a car in the past from the same dealer and the sales manager remembered me. It was great - no pressure and no time limit. Gives you a chance to test out all the tech and to just be quiet and listen to how the car sounds without anybody talking or anything. I understand this may not be possible or cases but never hurts to ask.
After watching this video I'm even happier with my decision to buy my mazda 3 hatchback sport. Base trim has no fancy head lights, don't have to deal with huge wheels, no blind spot monitoring to worry about if someone breaks off my side mirror, no oversized brakes. You guys get the idea. The only things that do concern me is the direct injection, and the camera based crash prevention system
