I can finally see the difference between the two speedbooster ! Great video mate.
Out of all the vids that I've watched on this subject, you have single handedly directed my decision. Thank you!!!
Awesome! I'm glad I could help!
I’m so glad I made the switch to the metabones . The viltrox is ok for a temp solution but that soft image with aberrations is not acceptable. Spend the extra money and get the metabones
This was fantastic.
There's an odd lack of good side-by-side comparisons of the various speed-boosters. When you go looking a lot of the examples are from years ago or done by someone with a professional interest in one of the companies. It would be amazing if you could do a similar comparison for the other brands out there.
it would also be great if you linked somewhere we could see uncompressed frames of the side-by-side shots at the end.
Thanks for making this!
Thank you! I appreciate the feedback and am glad you like it!
I was actually thinking the same thing about the uncompressed frames. I'm working on it now and will post a link in the description as soon as it ready.
The uncompressed frames are up!

this is the only video on youtube that properly shows the differences, thanks !
This is EXACTLY what I was looking for. Thank you!
Please note that the BMPCC 6K only has one 6K shooting mode. All other modes are 4K down, including all ProRes modes. The bmpcc6k's 4k sensor (2/3 of full super 35 frame) is smaller than the 4k sensor which is MFT. In 4k shots (which are the most used) we have a crop factor of 2.5 in the bmpcc 6k, against a crop factor of 1.9 in the bmpcc4k camera. I mean for those who only use BRAW, if you use ProRes 4k downscaled from super 35 then you're right.
Nice editing, great voice overs, overall superb production value. Interested to see what you have in stock next!
Really appreciate this video, I’m looking to buy the bmpcc4k and a sigma 18-35mm lens in the next few months (due to all the amazing stuff I hear about the two together) but I was unsure which speed adaptor to go for. Honestly feel like I should just save up for longer to get that metabones one now
Super helpful. Thank you!
Solid, informative and concise. Great video.
eh ... nice shots, editing, grade ... but, you're missing the fact that *almost every Viltrox EF-M2 adapter have to be calibrated after you unbox it* . It is a very simple procedure, all you need is a small phillips screwdriver, few minutes of time and open view to some object in the "infinity" range. After you finish, you lock optics with the screw and it is forever. I'm using the GH5s with the Sigma 18-35 - no problem with focusing (except for panasonic focus jumbo-mumbo), iris control and when you calibrate it perfectly, your zoom glass will keep focus during zooming. Btw. last weekend my friend ask me to calibrate his Viltrox and the BMPCC 4K, so I did it - calibration, Viltrox FW update, BMPCC FW update and quess what - everything works perfectly fine! Please calibrate and update your gear a then make a new video ;)
I feel your disappointment ... I have to admit that Viltrox (and many others China companies) are fluctuating in their production quality. I was maybe just a lucky winner of a slightly better unit :) On both optical and electronical sides.
(reposted as 24 Frames)
I did calibrate my Viltrox as soon as I got it and spent more than a few minutes trying to get it to be perfect. It seemed to me that with a calibrated infinity focus, shooting closer subjects wide open just wasn't as sharp as it should have been. The GH5s of course has a different sensor, but it's nice that your friend's Viltrox is working ok. At f1.8 and f1.4 I didn't get the sharpness I wanted, even after calibrating, so I decided to try a different adapter. The focus wasn't the only thing that pushed me away though, I didn't like the loss of iris control or the glitch that misrepresented the current aperture. In the end, I wasn't happy with the product and decided that it wasn't for me, but that doesn't mean that you can't be happy with it. Discussion is always good and I appreciate you taking the time to watch.
The Viltrox infinity focus often needs adjusted to dial it in perfectly. There are many RUclips videos on this. It's a simple one time adjustment of the inner ring. The fact that this wasn't mentioned in this video, leaves me concerned for the results. If infinity focus of the Viltrox was never touched or adjusted, and the author of this video wasn't aware of this, then this comparison is somewhat flawed, since a properly adjusted infinity focus, would most likely yield nearly identical results, as shown in other comparison videos on RUclips.
I did spend quite some time trying to dial in the infinity focus using multiple lenses and still wasn't happy with the results. You're not the first person to bring up the infinity focus adjustment so, in hindsight, maybe I should have mentioned it in the video, but every speedbooster has a focus adjustment. Most of them come pre-calibrated from the factory, or at the very least are usable enough, but it seems like this isn't the case for the Viltrox. From what I can tell everyone who has used one has had to do it on their own.
I did, however, make an attempt to calibrate it myself, even though I personally believe this isn't something the end user should have to do. Not everyone is equipped with the proper tools and setup to accurately calibrate infinity focus. Maybe that's one of the reasons why they're cheaper? Who knows?
Great review! I own both the pocket 4K and pocket 6K. The 6K has since gone down in price to $2000 (at least when I purchased it). They're both fantastic cameras with pros and cons to them both. If you need two cameras, and you have the budget, getting one of each would be my recommendation over two of just one. The one issue with the 6K (aside from the inability to shoot 4K in BRAW) is that because it has a standard EF mount, there's no way that I've found to eliminate the lens wiggle when using an electronic follow focus. If your lens is long enough, you can use a lens support to mitigate somewhat, but that doesn't help with a lot of smaller primes. I've been using a set of FD lenses adapted with EF mounts, and the wiggle on most of them renders the combination nearly unusable. I only have the standard metabones ultra atm for the 4K, but hoping when I upgrade to the cine lock version, that'll make the 4K and FD combination possible with my Nano Nucleus. If anyone has an idea how to lock the lenses on the 6K, I'd be thrilled.
Great comparison. Thank you!
This video was excellent. Great editing and content!
Great vid thanks
Wow, great information and wonderful presentation. I just picked up a G85 to up the game on my YT channel (was filming with SL2 / Sigma 18-35), but am very unhappy with the focusing issues. I never knew auto focus would be so awful on the Lumix. Love me some DPAF from Canon :)
The autofocus is a pretty big flaw with the G85. But fortunately for me, I never really used autofocus. On the rare occasion that I did, I would use a Canon 80D with an STM lens combo. But I wouldn't give up on the G85! It was my primary camera for several years before I upgraded to the BMPCC 4K. I used the standard Metabones Ultra and a Sigma 18-35, shot in 4K, 23.98 FPS, and was so impressed with the image quality for the price. I still often use it as my B Cam. I took it with me to Ireland and Iceland, and I'd often even use the kit lens when low light wasn't an issue; it's light weight and dual IBIS was fantastic. With the G85, I think you'd be safe getting the Viltrox and you'll still be pleased.
I shot this short film on the G85 with the Metabones Ultra and Sigma 18-35 & Rokinon 85mm T1.5: ruclips.net/video/gsAsDSnNZnw/видео.html
Great review and explanation, thanks.
Bro.. such quality in this review! Concise and straight to the points that matter! Whoever the people are that gave this video a thumbs down, clearly are idiots.
Thanks man! I appreciate that.
Absolutely my thought and hate those nasty competitors who forget one day, they were exactly here!
well explained! thank you !
Gerald Undone did make the same comparison between the new metabones and the viltrox and his conclusion was "nearly the same optical performance"..while this videos ...and my 6 viltrox adapters in the last 2 years..show a different result.
Wide open just horrible.. and who buys a speed booster to stop the aperture down to get a good performance?
But is this the viltrox m2 ii? Gerald said they updated it and the new one is much better
Thanks for the great content here. TU and Subscribed.
I use the viltrox and I don't have the problem with the softness you have, I sometimes get better results using the viltrox with ef lenses than some native micro four thirds lenses, special when using the sigma 18-35.
Same here...once I dialed in my infinity focus on the Viltrox, the results with the Sigma 18-35 are sometimes TOO sharp. Definitely not seeing the kind of softness shown in this video.
@@sharpasl307 infinity focus??
great video! One question I have is what the two differences are in metabones line up for canon RF mount, what's the difference in between the two other than the price difference?
Hi! this is a very in depth review so than you for your work. I would like to know what kind of work you do? Going into some detail on this would be very helpful in putting your comments in proper context. There is a point where diminishing returns make most points listed here useless to many creators. Spend money on people not gear and you will always have a better result in the long run......,
I totally understand your argument and agree that cultivating good relationships with people/clients is very important. To some people the Metabones may not be worth it. I, personally, shoot wide open often, and was not comfortable with the results I was getting, so I decided the Viltrox wasn't for me. That doesn't mean others can't benefit from it. Some people have gotten results they like with the Viltrox and that's great. I, unfortunately, did not have the same luck.
well... all this is nice and bananas, but since Viltrox EF-M2 II viltrox is clear winner. nice vid tho.
I have a Viltrox and it seems fine, although I don't have a Metabones to compare it to. Some other youtube reviewers have compared the two directly and found little appreciable difference between them (one guy said the Viltrox was actually sharper at some apertures! Although I'd take that with a pinch of salt). This hints to me that there is some quality variation going on with the Viltrox. Maybe you were unlucky.
EF-M2 II did improve from the previous EF-M2 used in this video.
Great video. I was wondering if you have ever encountered vignetting on the .71 cine metabones and if so with what lens combination/zoom/aperture setting if you remember. I want to get a bmpcc at s35 or close and I am too new to video to justify getting the 6k. I just want to steer clear of vignette if I can avoid it.
I mentioned this in an earlier comment.
I don't have any vignetting added when using my Sigma 12-24mm @ 12mm. That being said, that lens has some slight vignetting on full-frame cameras, so it's slightly visible when using the Metabones, but it's not caused by the adapter.
The "bloomy feel of the viltrox can be desirable". The differences between these adapters is negligible in a production. Choose the cheaper one.
22mm 2.4 >>>> 16mm 1.8
Cristal clear with Metabones x 0.71 on M4/3.
Does anyone know what ever happened to this creator/channel? Post a one hit wonder and vanished! The quality of this video was top knotch and your presentation skills are nice and clear! Hope you make a comeback or already made it in the film world!
🙏🏼 Thank you for your kind words! Definitely a needed pick me up! 😃
Honestly, I spread myself a bit thin and this channel got knocked down the priority list because of it. I've been wanting to carve out some time and talk about some vintage lenses as the topic for my next video.
To answer your question about work, my day job is in video marketing and I freelance as well. My most recent work has been selected for the Circus International Film Festival, which can be found at the link below if you're interested.

great video, thanks! please also mention that metabones for bmpcc and bmpcc4k are not the same, and not compatible with each other. Despite being m43 both
You're right. I figured it went without saying, since I mention the original BMPCC and Metabones made for it early on in the video.
But, what about a stabilisation?
Is this the Viltrox M2 mark i or the Mark ii version
It is the Viltrox EF-M2 mk I

Thanks for the review and tests. It seems that they both suffer from corner sharpness. Or is it from the lens itself?
Thanks for watching! I feel it's a little of both. The 50mm f/1.4, for example, isn't the sharpest, and adding another glass element into the mix doesn't help. That being said, it seems Metabones did a really good job at minimizing the adverse effects.
@@film24fps Thanks for your reply. Would be great if you could do a test without any sppedboosters so that we can compare. cheers
@@shamsheeds I could do that, but without a speedbooster you would have a different crop and would only see a more central part of the lens, x1.9 vs x1.349. That more central area compared to the edge of the lens would be different even without a speedbooster (the edge would just be cropped). If you add another glass element to the edge and compare that to the central area with no speedbooster, you would understandably yield drastically different results.
@@film24fps You are indeed right. Just sharing my experience; for me an advantage of using a speed booster on the Bmpcc 4k is that it helps to avoid dust on the sensor itself. Whereas if there is dust on the speed booster, is is less visible and easier to clean. I have had a speed booster on mine most of the time and never had any dust issue. The last time I used a mft native lens, and had the speed booster back on, I ended up with a dust on the sensor which was annoying.
please tell me whether the sony lens can be used for blackmagic 4k body, is there an adapter for sony e mount to mft?
oh you used MK1 Viltrox and uncalibrated from the box! hmm,....
I did use the mk1, but to my knowledge the mk 2 did not improve the optics. The advertised improvements were housing and better electronics. You are mistaken that I did not calibrate it. I spent quite some time trying to get it perfect, hoping that I could still use it. Ultimately, I gave up on tinkering with it, not only because of focus issues, but firmware as well.
Nice video. These results are very different from the ones Gerald undone had on his video when comparing these two speedboosters, why is that?
Thank you! I compare the Metabones EF-BMPCC4K to the Viltrox EF-M2 Mki.
In his video he used the Viltrox EF-M2 Mkii, and compares it to the Metabones EF-MFT and the EF-BMPCC4K.
What I took from his video is that the Viltrox EF-M2 Mkii is an improvement to the Mki, and that the EF-BMPCC4K is better than the EF-MFT at low apertures. I remember him saying that the improvement is not worth selling your EF-MFT to buy an EF-BMPCC4K version, which is understandable since you would lose some money, but the EF-BMPCC4K is still better. If you don't own either of the Metabones and are thinking of buying one, I'd suggest the BMPCC4K version.
PLS I've been looking everywhere but how do you change the aperture on the sigma art 18-35 as demonstrated in your video????
What do you think of the metabones m43 version compared to the bmpcc4k version, where would you notice a difference assuming both are the ultra version? Just really wide apurtures?
Yeah, I think the difference would be most visible when using wide apertures.
Convert several Zeiss Contax lenses to EF mount. Which Metabone speedbooster do you suggest? XL or Ultra?
Zeiss Contax lenses are for full-frame cameras, so you should be able to use the XL without any problems. Sorry for the late reply.
So I was on an out door shoot yesterday for the first time with my sigma 18-35 leans with viltrox ef-m2 ii speedbooster and It would only go to f11 this normal?
Perfect video! This is the exact video I'm looking for! Quick question though, when using the ultra wide angle lens like the tokina 11-20mm or the rokinon 10mm cine lens does it shows vignetting? Because when I use it with the original Metabones Ultra for Mft and the Viltrox it shows really strong vignetting at widest focal lengths, I'm curious about the newly release Metabones speedbooster.
Thank you! I'm glad you liked it.
I don't have any vignetting added when using my Sigma 12-24mm @ 12mm. That being said, that lens has some slight vignetting on full-frame cameras, so it's slightly visible when using the Metabones, but it's not caused by the adapter.
What options are there for Nikon F mount lenses?
There seem to be quite a few M4/3 to Nikon F mounts available, but the speedbooster is not BMPCC4K specific, so you might run into some of the issues I mentioned in the video.
Is the mark ii better or still get the metabone speedbooster
Does it make sense to buy expensive Metabones if I only plan to have a speedbooster just for my Canon 24-105 EF L lens paired with Lumix GH5? The rest of my lenses are MFTs. Any comments, guys?
I don't think so. The softness issues only happened at wide apertures. Your Canon lens is f/4, so you shouldn't have a problem. If you only need a speedbooster for that lens, I say go with the Viltrox.
24 Frames thanks a lot for your reply! Just bought Viltrox and it works fine with my 24-105, no issues so far
Can someone elaborate on what’s said at 0:56 with ‘full frame lenses’ I’ve only heard the term full frame when referring to sensor sizes.
Hello! What I meant by crop lenses was lenses that are intended for use with smaller sensors like APS-C. If you use them on a full-frame camera, the image will not fill the entire sensor. Sigma's DC line or Canon's EF-S line are examples of crop lenses.
That’s interesting, I film on a gh5 m4/3 and are always annoyed I can’t really have a nice wide lense w/out a speedbooster due to the 2x crop. Could I find similar cropped lenses for the Panasonic m 4/3 range?
@@halomaniackslashcraz These kinds of lenses wouldn't help you have a wider FOV.
Crop factor is a confusing thing. In an attempt to make it less confusing, manufacturers always reference 35mm sensors. The labeled FOV on crop lenses reference a full-frame sensor, so you still have to apply the crop.
If you see an EF-S 10-18mm, it means that when using it on an APS-C camera, it would actually be a 16-29mm. The only thing that changes is the projection onto the sensor, meaning a crop 10-18mm lens and a full-frame 10-18mm lens have the same FOV on a crop camera, but the crop lens can't be used on a full frame camera, since it was only designed with the smaller sensor in mind. Hope that helps!
i want boca!
Who doesn't want bokeh? =)
How do you add the firmware with for the speedbooster?
When you connect the Viltrox through USB it shows up as a drive on your computer. Download the firmware and drag and drop it onto the "drive" (speedbooster) and it will install automatically.
Great video!
My Metabones Bmpcc4k Speedbooster has strong vignetting when recording in 4k DCI using the Sigma 18-35 f/1.8. Is this a common issue and what can I do about it?
Which version are you using, the XL or the Ultra? I can't say that I've noticed strong vignetting on the Ultra. I can imagine the XL would vignette because the wider FOV. The BMPCC4K with an XL speedbooster will bring the crop down to x1.216, which is wider than what the Sigma 18-35mm was designed for.
@@film24fps I am using the Ultra
@@losingthings1021 I just did a quick check and didn't see anything close to "strong vignetting". I'd be happy to take a look at some of your results.

@@film24fps I hope everything is going well. I’m happy to hear that you are thinking of making a return to RUclips and subscribed with post notifications for when ever you get back.
Feel like this is misleading. Using an older outdated model of the viltrox. You'll get very similar results with the mark ii
It was not my intention. The older model is what I purchased and after some research it was my understanding that the optics did not change in the new model. I've read and heard accounts from others that stated they had similar results to mine with the newer model as well.
why the Viltrox mk 1 though? Doesnt make any sense. If you wish to win some subscribers, try to give us something useful. Everyone knew Metabones is better but have been hearing Viltrox closed the gap by a lot and given the 4x price difference, that would make an interesting video and purchasing decision. But you went the exact opposite way...here let me compare my iphone 11 pro max with a 2014 Motorola and tell you how much better the iphone is.
Is that what you heard? I read that the EF-M2II has a better coating and updated contacts, but that's it.
Can you show some graded footage instead of that chart in your analysis.. of all the reviews I’ve seen most of you seem to show a chart instead of some actual which in some cases can be cleaned up in post. It seems most folks are Pro metabones and lead into not giving an accurate comparison of the models... get the viltrox shoot something then put It out and say it’s the meta ones and folks will cheer it on....
THE most boring video EVER! had to watch it up to the end though...just to be sure :)
I can see why you think that. It's a very niche topic. Thanks for watching anyway!
